Scientists did not start looking at pain until the 1960s. Until then, pain relief was usually left to neurosurgeons, who often did little more than sever nerve bundles. This approach was discredited in 1959 by Amsterdam-based Professor Willem Noordenbos, who established that this only increases the pain. Of the 2.2 million Dutch people over the age of twenty who experience pain on a daily basis, between 600,000 and 800,000 suffer chronic pain without an immediate cause or for which the cause has not yet been established.
