LEADERSHIP REMARKS t is an exciting time at Emerald Youth Foundation, where more than Iurban 1,400 young people are now engaged in our missional work. Many more children, teens and young adults have caring people who walk with them and help them in the key areas of Christian faith, learning, relationships and health. New, community-wide plans will reach even more children. I am thankful for Emerald Youth’s vision for the city and its holistic programs that touch the entire substance of a child’s life. Our increasing awareness of the challenges facing our urban children tells us life in the inner city is too much for a young person to handle alone. Our hearts break at the thought of Knoxville’s youngest citizens wrestling with isolation, hopelessness, poor health practices and poverty. Steve Diggs and his staff work at the center of these challenges, finding solutions. Working alongside them is a privilege and a source of deep satisfaction. It was a special joy in 2013 to see my daughter, Kristin, serve at Emerald Youth as an AmeriCorps member. The experience and the wisdom she gained from the children and staff were life-changing for her. Board of Trustees Chair Doug Kennedy with daughter Kristin. Kristin served as an AmeriCorps member in 2013 working with high school students in Emerald Youth’s JustLead program.

Thank you,

Doug Kennedy Chair, Emerald Youth Foundation Board of Trustees he year 2013 set the course for another season of growth and Tannouncement expansion for Emerald Youth Foundation. A highlight was the Nov. 4 of the Sansom Sports Complex, which will expand sports opportunities for our inner city kids, especially urban soccer. What a blessing it is to see all of the amazing growth the Lord is allowing in our programs: JustLead, which through our network of urban churches reaches children in the neighborhoods where they live, Emerald Youth Sports, now serving more than 450 youth with coached sports year-round, and Emerald Youth Fellows, now providing mentoring and leadership training to its third class of high school seniors. Today, as we stand together seeking the health and well-being of Knoxville’s inner city youth, our work is cut out for us. As a community, we’ve got to provide kids the right opportunities so they can flourish. We must work to close the achievement gap between our urban students and urban schools and their peers in Knoxville’s suburbs. We must consciously raise up the next generation of leaders in our urban neighborhoods. Thank you for caring and being a friend of this ministry. Sincerely, Emerald Youth Foundation Executive Director Steve Diggs and (front, from left) EY soccer players Julio Rico, Hector Purulla, Abby Diggs and Lena Foster.

ore than 1,100 urban Knoxville young people aged 5-25 grew in character, life skills and leadership ability through JustLead in 2013. JustLead, Emerald Youth’s longtime, neighborhood-based program implemented through city churches and faithbased organizations, played an important role in 2013 in response to inner city needs. JustLead provides youth with key services that focus on the total person – spiritual, academic, caring relationships and good health. Following Emerald Youth’s year-long Urban Youth Study begun in 2012, JustLead ministries were able to draw a sharper focus on the needs of urban children based on the “gaps” revealed by the study. (See more on page 12.) Outcomes in 2013 included: l More than 800 youth engaged in faith programming,

which included weekly Bible studies, Wednesday night dinner and worship, and a faith-based small group time. EYF based its entire faith ministry on a curriculum custom written for urban kids by author Chris Graves. Kids resonated to the big-picture themes of the curriculum and embraced the invitation in small groups to share their own life events. “It is hard to find people like that who really care,” said one teen. l 800+ youth benefitted from learning programming. A total of 363 elementary and middle school students participated in the on-site Learning Labs, which are equipped with computers and software to help students remedy their academic weaknesses. In 2013, two JustLead ministries – Emerald Avenue United Methodist and Virginia Avenue Ministry – received on-site labs, for a total of five Learning Labs now in operation. Many students also

received homework help and tutoring, often followed by dramatically improved grades. On the high school level, many of the 18 students who took an ACT Prep course at Austin-East High School gained admission to colleges. And an in-classroom, Algebra I tutoring program piloted at Fulton High School in 2013 helped more than 150 students. l More than 900 youth benefitted from relationship-building opportunities. They received mentoring from ministry staff, camp counselors, Bible study and small group leaders, tutors, and foster grandparents. Youth of every age enjoyed out of town trips: more than 75 high school students attended Resurrection, an annual conference in Gatlinburg, 78 middle school youth attended camp at Doe River Gorge, and 102 elementary kids had fun at camp at Coker Creek Village. Kids attended regular outings through the

year, such as middle school fun day, Emerald Youth Camp Week for more than 200 children in June, trips to pools and mountains throughout the summer, a visit to Oakes Farm Corn Maze in October, and in December, the Variety Holiday Party to view “Frozen, courtesy of Regal Entertainment Group and Variety of Eastern Tennessee. l Over 650 youth were involved in health programming in 2013. This included instruction in nutrition and healthy lifestyles, camps on cooking, biking, and gardening, and frequent opportunities to enjoy fun outdoor activities. More than 370 children received meals weekly on Wednesday nights. Through a program offered jointly with the City of Knoxville, nearly 250 children in JustLead took swim lessons. Overall, young people experienced a joyful 2013 in JustLead! ANNUAL REPORT 2012 ANNUAL REPORT 2013

013 was a year of joyous growth for Emerald Youth Sports, in both the number of youth served and the depth and range of athletic programs. More than 450 youth aged 5-18 participated in sports that included volleyball, basketball, soccer, and baseball teams, and a summer swim team. A key feature of Emerald Youth is its collaboration with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. The two organizations team up to get as many urban youth involved in sports as possible, while methodically building their skill levels and supporting them spiritually with prayer and regular devotionals. Emerald Youth Sports made several strategic moves in 2013. One was to expand the recreational league teams through improved communications and a concerted schools outreach. The inclusive, low-cost rec teams offer life-changing opportunities for city kids. Volleyball grew to 105 players, soccer to 135, and basketball to more than 150; and nearly 50 kids participated on the swim team, swimming in four meets and two regional tournaments. EY Sports also built competitive club teams alongside its more relaxed, recreational league teams. The building of players’ skills in middle school makes them eligible to play in high school. EYF-sponsored club teams in 2013 included five AAU basketball teams (one a championship-winning girls’ team) and a girls’ volleyball team. A third EY Sports initiative in 2013 was to launch more athletic teams at urban middle schools where team sports are limited. These included a new volleyball team at Vine Middle School, a second year of volleyball at Whittle Springs Middle School, and a baseball team at Whittle Springs. It is difficult to overstate the value of athletics to urban kids, for whom obesity, inactivity and isolation are ongoing problems. Through Emerald Youth, kids can: l Learn athletic skills young enough to be competitive on middle school or high school athletic team l Benefit from Christian ministry and mentoring by caring adults l Grow in the community of teammates l Gain skills that literally save lives: through EY, kids learn to swim each year, stemming horribly high drowning rates among low-income youth.

high school seniors chosen for the ’13 Class of EY Fellows.

he 11 members of the 2013 class of Emerald Youth Fellows finished a highly successful year, graduating from high school and completing their first term in college. They are the second class of the Fellows, the program of EYF that provides graduating high school seniors with mentoring and support through college and into the launch of their careers. The 2013 EY Fellows and their colleges are: Preston Abbott and Maicaiela Ash Thompson – University of Tennessee at Knoxville; Bellansira Horusenga – Tennessee Wesleyan College; Jeamika Burton and Anitrea Harris – University of Tennessee at Chattanooga; Brianna Gallmann – East Tennessee State University; CharMya Cason – Pellissippi State Community College; Delandra Carter and Jordan Carter – Maryville College; Christian Kirk – Bethel University; and Jazmine Smith – Clark Atlanta University. The members of the 2013 class were chosen in February of their senior year of high school for their leadership abilities and commitment to community. Each went on to receive training through workshops such as “Culture, Race and Privilege” and “Community Leadership.” They studied Christian community development as an approach to rebuild poor neighborhoods and took classes in time and money management. “Our goal is to work with these students through their post-secondary education—whether it is college or technical training—and help them move into their professional lives, the faith community, and in a servant leadership role in the city,” said Cedric Jackson, EY Fellows director. What a year they spent! Caring community leaders pitched in with mentoring, planning, and leading seminars. In 2013 they included Chrisi Bollinger, Cole Piper, Jonathan Mayfield, Nancy Gregg and Dwaine Setzer. During the summer after high school graduation, the members of the 2013 class visited Chicago’s Lawndale neighborhood, a notoriously poor and crime-ridden area that has undergone nationally recognized transformation. They met with neighborhood residents and administrators of the respected Lawndale Community Church and the Lawndale Christian Development Corporation. “We want the Fellows to grow to be servant leaders in their own homes and in their communities. Lawndale has been this model of community transformation for 30 years. It takes that long to bear fruit. That’s why you need young people,” said Jackson.

EMERALD YOUTH BUZZ A VARIETY OF FUN

Emerald Youth Camp Week, an annual highlight of summer, delivered a jam-packed good time for more than 200 children June 17-21. Thanks to our friends at Variety of Eastern Tennessee, children enjoyed these camping experiences: biking, cooking, drama, art, science, business, outdoor adventures, team building, gardening and sports. The kids also enjoyed a fantastic day at the Knoxville Zoo. Thanks, Variety of Eastern Tennessee!

EY BREAKFAST

More than 1,000 guests filled the Knoxville Expo Center for the 20th annual EYF Breakfast on May 3, raising key support for the ministries and celebrating more than two decades of growth. The joyful event featured warm fellowship, a radiant performance by the 70-member youth choir led by John Jackson, and a new video by RIVR Media. A highlight of the event was a presentation to the Sisters of Mercy by Steve Diggs, EY executive director, and Doug Kennedy, chairman of the EY Board of Trustees, in honor of the order’s faithful service to Emerald since its inception in 1991. Today Emerald’s programs serve more than 1,400 urban youth.

THANKS, TA!

Sam Smith, franchisee of the Knoxville West TA TravelCenter, presented a gift of $3,726 - donated by his customers - to Emerald Youth Foundation. The money will be used to benefit EY’s faith, education and sports programs.

THANKS, PILOT!

Pilot presented Emerald Youth Foundation with a check for $8,376 following its fifth annual “Give a Buck for Emerald Youth” program. The customer donation campaign took place during the summer at Pilot’s 40 East Tennessee Pilot Food Marts. Dan Fleming, Pilot vice president of operations, presented the check at the Western Avenue Pilot.

A LEGACY TO REMEMBER

Upwards of 900 guests attended the fifth annual Emerald Youth Foundation Legacy Dinner Nov. 4, honoring Knoxville civic leader and philanthropist Bill Sansom with Emerald’s Legacy Award. Stories by Emerald young people and worship with the Emerald Youth choir directed by John Jackson set a joyful tone. The dinner was the apex of a day of celebration. Earlier, in a press conference held jointly with Emerald and Mayor Madeline Rogero, Sansom announced the coming construction of an 14-acre, downtown sports complex for inner city youth. A gift of The H.T. Hackney Company employees and the Sansom Family, the complex will include playing fields, a field house, and strength training facility.

GOLF TOURNAMENT

Nearly 120 golfers had a great time Oct. 1 at the Emerald Youth Golf Classic, presented by Regal Entertainment Group, at Willow Creek Golf Club. Players enjoyed lunch by Flat Creek BBQ and then hit the course for a beautiful afternoon of golf. The day concluded with the awards reception and dinner by Popeyes. The tournament proceeds benefit Emerald Youth Sports.

URBAN D YOUTH STUDY

uring 2012-2013, Emerald Youth conducted a study to identify the gaps in services with Knoxville’s most economically disadvantaged youth and communities. There were pronounced issues the study uncovered, such as: l Eighty-seven percent of the 12,000 economically disadvantaged students at the 29 elementary, middle, and high schools included in the study are not known to engage in faith development. Students are less engaged in faith development than in learning, relationships, or health. l Urban middle and high school youth are less engaged in learning activities than younger students, and these teens lag substantially behind their suburban peers in regard to academic outcomes. l Several thousand urban youth – from elementary school to high school – are not engaged in relationship-building activities. l More than half of the students at each of the six high schools included in the study are not engaged in health activities. About 40 percent of the students at these schools are overweight and obese,

which exceeds the Knox County average. Emerald Youth is committed to closing the gaps. Our responses to the study’s findings include: l Mobilizing more churches and Christians across the inner-city to disciple children, youth, and young adults. l Working with community residents to remove barriers in the community that are making it hard for children to grow up. l Getting more kids physically active with non-traditional sports, such as our growing volleyball program for teenage girls and the urban soccer expansion plans with the new Sansom Sports Complex. While we are at great risk of losing this generation, Emerald Youth is determined not to let that happen, and as such, we are accelerating the pace of our youth and community work in the city.

O

“We are overjoyed. This will greatly increase the opportunities for urban youth to participate in physical activities. Urban kids are often left out of sports because they don’t have a place to play or resources to pay expensive fees,” said Steve Diggs, EY executive director. Emerald Youth will use the state of the art facility for soccer, lacrosse, flag football, and performance training. This comes in addition to EY’s basketball, baseball, volleyball and swim teams.

SANSOM SPORTS COMPLEX

n Nov. 4, H.T. Hackney CEO Bill Sansom announced plans to build a cutting-edge sports complex for urban kids near World’s Fair Park. H.T. Hackney Co., the Sansom family and the Emerald Youth Foundation have begun construction on the complex at the 14-acre Dale Avenue site that once housed Hackney warehouses. When complete, the complex will include three playing fields with synthetic turf, a covered pavilion, and a 5,000 square foot field house with a training center.

A LEGACY OF GIVING S

ince the founding of Emerald Youth, Patsy Routh was dedicated to our ministry with young people. A resident of North Knoxville and longtime member of Emerald Avenue United Methodist Church, Patsy engaged with us in many ways. She was a member of Emerald Youth’s board of directors, yet was most affected by her interaction with countless boys and girls. She passionately gave her time, energy and resources to Emerald Youth, and in recent years, decided to leave a portion of her estate to us. Patsy chose to make a legacy gift to Emerald Youth because of her deep care for Knoxville’s urban children, and she also wanted to encourage others who may consider estate planning. Emerald Youth has a wealth of people and resources available to assist with estate planning, including our friends at National Christian Foundation of East Tennessee and Holston Conference Foundation, among others. If you would like to learn more, we would be honored to speak with you, as together, we serve the children of our city Patsy so dearly loved.
