Aviation and Railway Art
of Keith Hill at The Racehorse From April 29th until May 3rd Rushden based artist, Keith Hill will be exhibiting his work at The Racehorse country inn and restaurant in Catworth. Keith’s work is internationally known with his work in many military establishments worldwide including the Pentagon. In 2002 he was commissioned by the Daily Mail to produce a painting of a ‘Spitfire’ in order to raise money for the Battle of Britain Memorial on the Thames Embankment. All 2000 copies of the Limited Edition print sold out within twenty hours raising thousands of pounds for the memorial. Many of Keith’s paintings involve the US 8th Air Force and particularly the 303rd Bomb Group who flew from RAF Molesworth during WWII and a number of these will be on display during the exhibition. He is also known for his ‘railway art’ and his latest painting ‘Home From The Seaside’ will be on display with the Limited Edition print on sale for the first time. The subject of the painting is the locomotive that carried the name ‘KIMBOLTON CASTLE’. From 10-30am until 3-30 pm Keith will be in attendance and pleased to talk about his work to visitors. The exhibition will be situated in the new ‘Coffee House’ at the Racehorse allowing visitors

IN MEMORY
OF SERVING PERSONNEL Royal Air Force (RAF) Wyton start work on a memorial garden to commemorate all Station personnel that have passed away both on operational duty and at home. The Commanding Officer, Wing Commander Mike Brown, was joined by One Complete Solution (OCS) to remove the first clod of earth from the rose bed of the memorial garden. OCS designed the garden alongside the project officer, Squadron Leader Padre Steve Radley, and will also be undertaking the manual labour. The garden is due to be finished by the end of March. The memorial garden was the brain child of Brigadier Nick Davies, Commander Joint Force Intelligence Group (JFIG), who wanted to honour the memory of JFIG personnel alongside the Pathfinder Force at RAF Wyton. He proposed the idea of a garden where personnel could remember their family or friends that had passed away. The garden will site both a memorial stone for JFIG and the current stone that commemorates the Pathfinder Force. The stones will be surrounded by a partially filled rose garden to allow personnel to plant their own flowers in memory of friends and family that worked at RAF Wyton. Commemorative benches have also been bought to allow personnel to sit and enjoy the
6
surroundings of the memorial garden. Funding for the project was donated by the Commanding Officer’s welfare fund and the Medmenham Collection. The site will also become a focus point for Remembrance services held on the Station. Padre Steve Radley said: “It’s been a privilege to work on this project, I think it is a great way to utilise the space at RAF Wyton and I hope it is widely used by Station personnel as a place to reflect and remember their loved ones.” Wing Commander Mike Brown said: “The garden reflects the change that the Station has gone through in recent months, allowing us to honour its history and pay our respects to those personnel who worked for RAF Wyton and JFIG that have passed away.”

Health Matters
Spotlight on…….Coaching Sessions Did you know that: • 70% of GP cases are stress related (ISMA) • Stress is a major cause of staff turnover • Boredom can be a bigger cause of stress than overwork • Psychological stress factors are the third biggest link to heart disease (Lancet, 2004) Stress may be work induced or due to external events such as divorce, family or financial problems. I work with clients to address these specific issues and develop coping strategies, tools and techniques that help the individual manage stress levels and ensure that the client has the support that is necessary to be effective in all aspects of their lives. So many of us go through life without any direction. Setting goals and targets helps to motivate us, gives our lives more purpose and reduces our susceptibility to stress related
illness. Sometimes you can be completely unaware of the areas that are holding you back. Even if you do appreciate where the problem lies, it’s another matter altogether asking how you address them, how you can change the situation and how you move forward. I am able to work with you over a series of coaching sessions to diagnose the issues and then help you to take actions to lift your personal performance levels to a whole new level. You will become more motivated, focussed and revitalised as a result of coaching. Carla Smalley, Certified Coach & Counsellor is available at the Holistic Hands Wellbeing Centre for appointments on Wednesday between 1-9pm Please contact the centre for further details 01480 869404 Or email info@holistic-hands-online.com

Retirement
Consider the Cost This month I am going to address the cost of past advice and also the cost of raising a child. Cost of Advice Do you have pensions and investments that were arranged years ago by an adviser that no longer keeps in touch with you? Or perhaps you have pensions and investments where you haven’t changed the funds you are invested in? When you took out these plans, the adviser probably promised both these things and you may have been left in With Profits or Property funds, and in the case of pensions – not increased the contribution levels as you should have. Did you know that on most of these plans there is a built in charge to provide for on-going advice? So, if you are not receiving this advice, someone is benefitting at your expense, so why not receive what you are already paying for? You could contact the original adviser or company, or ask another adviser who should be able to have the fee changed to them, to help pay for providing
Tony Larkins CFP APFS Managing Director / IFA Chartered and Certified Financial Planner
you with on-going advice. Cost of a Child The latest study by Legal and General shows that it costs ÂŁ154,440 to raise a child to 18, and yet families spend more on pocket money and treats than they do on insurance. With only 29% having critical illness cover and 14% income protection, many families would have serious financial problems if a serious or long term illness struck. Clearly, when families have young/ dependent children, money can be tight, but consideration should be given to covering these insurance needs, just as we insure holidays, cars, houses etc. or keep spare tyres, life jackets, etc. You hope you never need them, but just in case... You should always seek qualified advice from an IFA, preferably a Certified (CFP) or Chartered Financial PlannerCM (APFS). If you have a financial question, e-mail: tlarkins@beaconwealth.co.uk

ADOPTABOX
AT HOLT ISLAND NATURE RESERVE Friends of Holt Island Nature Reserve in St Ives have announced the start of this year’s Adoptabox fundraiser. Adoptabox offers you the opportunity to sponsor a bird box, and in return you will receive an Adoption Certificate, an island map and regular updates, with pictures, of your new family’s progress. Holt Island Nature Reserve is owned and managed by Huntingdonshire District Council, with huge support from the Friends group, and hundreds of hours a year of practical work undertaken by a regular group of volunteers. Chairman of the Friends Group, Ian Jackson, said: “Once again we have 26 bird boxes ready and waiting for new tenants — and sponsors. All you need to do is choose a box number, send us £10 and we will do the rest. You could get a blue tit, great tit, robin, treecreeper or tawny owl in your box. You may even get a duck in a basket!” Adoption forms, and all other details, are available
from Robin Waters on 01480 386644, or at robin. waters@rswgeomatics.com This fundraiser idea would make a great gift for Mother’s Day, or a child’s birthday. What a great way to welcome the spring!

BOOK BUG REVIEW In the Shadow of the Banyan by Vaddey Ratner Vaddey Ratner was 5 years old when the Khmer Rouge took over Cambodia. In this book she tells the story through the eyes of 7 year old Raami, but it is essentially her story and she has written it as a memorial to her father, who was disappeared in the early days of the regime. Raami is the daughter of a Cambodian prince, a poet who inspires his daughter with poems and stories and a prime target for the Khmer Rouge, with their aim to destroy the intellectual and educated members of society and return Cambodia to its rural past. The whole family are thrown out of their home in Phnom Penh and sent to work in the countryside, but it doesn’t take long for the upheaval to become an excuse for settling old scores and self-advancement. Raami and her family must try and hide their true identity as the regime becomes even more brutal and self serving. Vaddey Ratner weaves Cambodian folk tales and Buddhist imagery into Raami’s story, contrasting the beauty of the country before the Khmer Rouge with the suffering and devastation that followed their take-over. The story of her survival is as inspiring as it is terrifying. For more information about books and reading, visit the Virtual Library at www.bedford.gov.uk/ libraries. The Book Bug has worked for the library service in Bedfordshire for over 20 years. She lives in Brickhill with far too many books!
