From Port Eynon to St. Neots

to fight Kaiser Wilhelm by peter ibbett If you walked the streets of St. Neots in the spring of 1913 what sounds, smells and sights would stimulate your senses? Perhaps the clatter of hooves, the smell of fresh horse manure, the occasional sound of a motor car engine, the heavy soot laden air and the aroma of Paines Brewery might accompany you from the Market Square down South Street towards the open sewer of the Hen Brook. Where three modern town houses now stand opposite the infamous toilet block, the sound of hammer on anvil might have drawn a glance through an old wooden archway into Ibbett’s Yard, where my young grandfather might have been spotted heading towards his lathe and another task of producing a part to help keep a piece of Victorian farming equipment fieldworthy. His world was about to change in a way that he could not have predicted. The start of the Great War in 1914 saw local changes and the passing through of military units which used horses as their motive power. Hence Jones the Farrier was billeted with my grandfather’s family, as he would clearly be at home in a blacksmith’s yard. A friendship ensued with my grandfather, which endured into their old age. In the mid 1970’s I was requisitioned to drive my elderly grandparents in my MkII Ford Cortina (‘probably the last time, my boy, that I’ll be able to see Jones the Farrier’) over to Port Eynon in the Gower peninsula, west of Swansea. A small ripple of history’s consequences left me to explore the quiet beauties of the Welsh coastline, far away from the world of 1914 that Cyril the Machinist and Jones the Farrier were talking of in the little Welsh cottage down the coast. YOUR MUSEUM NEEDS YOUR 1st WW STORIES St. Neots Museum plans a series of events next year to show how life in our area changed as a result of the start of the First World War. Please pass on photographs, stories and information of how you or your families lives were changed or influenced by the events of the Great War. Contact museum curator Liz Davies (curators@stneotsmuseum.org.uk or Peter Ibbett (pjibbett@aol. com) if you can help.

WILDLIFE WANDERINGS

WILDLIFE TRAVEL

During the next couple of months, spring will transform our landscape, with the warmer weather encouraging us to spend a bit more time walking in the countryside giving us the chance to see, and hear, more wildlife. Our resident birds, such as chaffinches, dunnocks and wrens, have already started to sing their characteristic songs but they will be joined by many species that only visit us in summer. They choose to spend our winter in areas where more food is available – usually around the Mediterranean or in the tropics. Two familiar birds that can be difficult to tell apart when seen flying, are the house martin and barn swallow. These two species travel to Africa, with swallows reaching the very far south so, when you see them arrive this month, think of the amazing journey they have just had, covering thousands of miles. Lakes, rivers and streams are good places to look in April for various ducks – as well as the very common mallard you may see a gadwall (that looks a bit similar but has a black ‘backside’) or a shoveler, which has a wide, flat bill. A duck that is now breeding locally is the ‘tufty’ - easy to spot as the males are black and white and have a tuft of feathers on their head and a pale blue bill when in full breeding colours. Amongst the waterside vegetation look out for marsh marigolds which have large, golden flowers, very similar to those of their close relations, the buttercups. Good places to visit are Paxton Pits, Grafham Water and the lakes around Cambourne.

Shoveler The flower highlight of the month for many is the bluebell which carpets the ground in many of our local woodlands. The UK has a high percentage of the word population of this plant and the conservation of ‘bluebell woods’ is very important. The Wildlife Trust has bluebell walks at several woods including Brampton Wood and Hayley Wood.

6

The bluebell, our wild hyacinth Many people travel to southern Europe in April to see the many spring flowers and migratory birds, particularly around the coasts or in the hillsides. One of the best places to visit worldwide, if you are lucky enough, is the Galapagos Islands, where April is the start of the breeding season for the rare waved albatross.

Waved albatross, Galapagos For information on local nature reserves, wildlife walks, talks and events contact The Wildlife Trust on 01954 713500 or visit www.wildlifebcn.org. ANYONE FOR TENNIS?

COME AND PLAY IN BUCKDEN!

Buckden Tennis Club has just launched its full coaching programme for 2013, providing a whole range of opportunities for both children and adults; individual lessons and group sessions at various skill levels. Our team of fully qualified coaches will be happy to help you decide which is appropriate for you. Buckden is a friendly village club, with four floodlit hard courts and a comfortable club house, which, over this winter, has invested in new perimeter fencing to ensure its facilities are always maintained to high standards. The club is also linked with Buckden Village Hall Trust with separate bar facilities next door. The club runs four, weekly informal sessions for members to ‘turn up and join in’ on; Friday, Saturday and Sunday mornings and also Wednesday evenings. All standards of player are welcome to join, including beginners and those who may be rusty after some time away from the game. We’ll make sure you’re not left out! As a member, you have access to the courts 7 days a week. During the summer months the club runs various tournaments ranging from monthly social ‘tea’

10

tournaments on Sunday afternoons, to the club’s annual singles and doubles competitions played with silverware for the winners. For the more accomplished players we run a number of teams throughout the year (summer and winter) in the Cambridgeshire leagues and the Hunts & Peterborough leagues, so there is the opportunity to play competitive tennis representing Buckden in matches against other tennis clubs in the area. The overriding emphasis of the club is for members to enjoy their tennis and the company of others in relaxed surroundings; to have fun! Social events are held at regular intervals during the year, including the ever popular annual quiz and the barbecue after the tournament for the Chairman’s Cup. Contact and membership details can be found on the club website at www.buckdentennis.org.uk Book your coaching sessions at Buckden at www.overandin.com

Neighbours from Hell!

YOU AND YOUR RIGHTS There is nothing worse than having a dispute with your neighbour. Any such dispute must therefore be handled carefully and effectively, to stop it spiralling out of control. If you experience a dispute with your neighbour you should consider the following: 1. Try to speak to your neighbour first You must at least try and reason with your neighbour first. Explain clearly what you are unhappy about and why your complaint is reasonable. There is a good chance that this will resolve the matter. If the dispute continues, despite speaking to your neighbour: 2. Speak to your neighbour’s landlord (if they rent the property) If the dispute continues: 3. Contact your local council If your attempts to reduce the nuisance fails, contact your local Public or Environmental Health Department, or Environmental Protection Division. They are ‘obliged’ to take ‘all reasonable steps’ to deal with your complaint. The Environmental Officer will: • Visit the property to assess the nuisance • Write to your neighbour

14

• If your neighbour ignores the Environmental Officer - a notice will be issued requiring your neighbour to stop causing the nuisance Important Notes • It is an offence not to comply with a notice. • Some local authorities may impose restrictions on night-time noise under the Noise Act 1996. • Under the Crime and Disorder Act 1988 local authorities can apply to a magistrates court for an antisocial behaviour order (ASBO). This will prohibit your neighbour from continuing the nuisance. If this still does not resolve problem - Take action yourself You will have the following options: • Ask your neighbour if they are prepared to attend mediation • Apply direct to your local magistrates court to complain about the nuisance. However, before you do this you should write a formal letter to your neighbour setting out your complaints and giving them 14 days to remedy the situation. Celebrity Julie Fernandez (The Office)

Opens Mixed Craft Centre in Cambs An exciting craft shop and training centre has been opened in the pretty village of Ellington in Cambridgeshire by the well-known actress and disability rights campaigner Julie Fernandez (better known as Brenda in the BBC show The Office) and award-winning jewellery designer Sarah Payne (finalist for the prestigious Fire Mountain Gems and Beads 2009 – beading category). As avid crafters themselves Julie and Sarah decided to open up a mixed craft centre in Ellington after having met some years ago on a patchwork and quilting class. Realising the potential of opening a shop that offers products and classes in various different crafts they decided to bite the bullet in this difficult economic climate and opened Bee Crafty in August 2011. Bee Crafty offers a wide range of patchwork quilting products as well as knitting and beading and runs popular workshops every Friday and Saturday. They also have what is known in the crafting world as ‘Stitch & Bitch’ and ‘Knit & Natter’ sessions in the shop every Tuesday and Wednesday where crafters can come together for a cuppa or a coffee and spend time working on their projects with other like minded people. Jill Adamson; their resident quilting teacher, offers one to one sessions every Thursday helping and advising with projects that people need help on and want to complete. They are also able to rent out sewing machines to customers who haven’t got one of their own or might find it too difficult to bring theirs to the shop. It is also home to the Granary Quilters a quilting group that meet the first and third Tuesday of the month from 7pm to 9pm and the middle Saturday 10am to 4pm. Bee Crafty is hoping to set up a knitting group and is looking for people who would like to join. As business women Julie and Sarah also realised the potential of making themselves accessible to disabled people as customers. Government statistics suggest that there are over 10 million disabled people in the UK with a disposable income of £70 billion. The simple fact is that if disabled people can’t get in then they can’t spend their money with you and in this difficult economic climate customers are king.

20

Customer service is extremely important to Julie and Sarah and they have built a fabulous reputation for this by offering a friendly and helpful service to all of their customers, even offering them a tea or coffee when they arrive at Bee Crafty whether they are browsing for goods or booked on a workshop. Bee Crafty stocks a wide range of fabrics from Makower to Fabric Freedom and Timeless Treasures to Moda as well as a wide range of notions. They have a fabulous range of Delica, Mill Hill and Rocailles as well as an excellent range of findings. Their beautiful wool comes from the well respected company King Cole which makes this an extremely affordable hobby. Julie and Sarah are extremely keen to help children realise their crafting potential, especially as it is rarely taught in school in this day and age. Bee Crafty offers a range of two hour classes for children ranging from 5 to 17 in all school holidays. These classes have included sock animals for younger children to all sorts of jewellery making for older kids. They are currently working on a range of sewing machine based classes for older children in the summer holidays. For further information please contact: info@beeingcrafty.co.uk or call 01480 891746 www.beeingcraftyl.co.uk Open Tuesdays to Saturdays from 10am to 5pm Parking for customers available.

Are You Getting Enough Sleep?

Centre for Complementary Health Sleep is an opportunity for our bodies to repair themselves, both physically and psychologically, but a recent survey by the Sleep Council suggests that as Britons we are not getting enough. The majority of Britons now sleep for seven hours or less per night, with more than a quarter (27%) experiencing poor quality sleep on a regular basis. And the number of Britons getting just five-six hours per night has risen dramatically in the past three years: more than a third of us get by on that amount of sleep, compared to 27% in 2010. Throughout March the Sleep Council are promoting National Bed Month, which is their longest standing awareness campaign, started in 1990. It is the time of year to remind everyone of the importance of getting a better night’s sleep and the role a good bed plays in achieving that. “We fully Support National Bed Month at the Centre as there are so many of us unable to get a good night’s sleep” said Jane, owner of Centre

for Complementary Health. “There are many ways you can improve sleep ranging from how you deal with stress and worry to relaxation and other therapies”. Jane added. But despite this, taking medication and drinking alcohol are some of the most popular methods that people use to help them drop off. So, given that more than four in ten Britons feel positive after a good night’s sleep, a third feel happy and almost a quarter feel productive, it’s well worth making the effort to improve our sleeping habits. Common law what?

FIONA MCLEMAN FAMILY LAW Filling out a motor insurance proposal form, I noted that one of the options as to ‘status’ after the usual “single”, “married” “divorced” and “widowed” read “common law”. It’s alarming that many unmarried couples who live together under the same roof are under the mistaken assumption that they have rights if they separate. In short, there is no such thing as the common law husband or wife. An unmarried couple who live together do not have the same rights if the relationship ends as they might do if they were married and got divorced. An unmarried couple have no rights to ask for a share of pension assets. Married couples have the right to ask for pension sharing orders as well as other arrangements with pensions. Unmarried couples have no right to ask to be financially maintained. Married couples have the right to ask for spousal maintenance. Unmarried couples have no rights to ask for a financial settlement on separation. Married couples have such rights, which can also include an arrangement for a sum of money to be paid on divorce. If an unmarried couple own property together, they will each have rights in respect of that property. There may be an argument as to whether the equity should be divided equally or in other shares. If the property is in one of the couple’s sole name, the other party may have no rights at all even if they have been paying towards the household expenses. It gets more complicated if the couple have children. It is

28

possible to bring a financial claim against the other party on behalf of the children. The claim might be for child maintenance, either through the Child Support Agency and possibly the Court. It is also possible to apply to the Court for money to help meet children’s costs, such as school fees or child care expenses. At worse, the court could order that a property is provided to the parent with care of the children, which will probably be returned to the other parent when the children are grown up. If you are thinking of moving in with someone, why not take advice to find out what rights you do or don’t have and to see if it would be a good idea to draw up an agreement about who is going to pay for what and what will happen if the relationship ends. If you are already living with someone it’s not too late to find out where you stand and whether there are things you might want to do to protect your position. And if you are already separated, it may be a legal minefield but sensible legal advice can help you get out of the mess amicably with your ex-partner.

Retirement

Consider the Cost This month I am going to address the cost of past advice and also the cost of raising a child. Cost of Advice Do you have pensions and investments that were arranged years ago by an adviser that no longer keeps in touch with you? Or perhaps you have pensions and investments where you haven’t changed the funds you are invested in? When you took out these plans, the adviser probably promised both these things and you may have been left in With Profits or Property funds, and in the case of pensions – not increased the contribution levels as you should have. Did you know that on most of these plans there is a built in charge to provide for on-going advice? So, if you are not receiving this advice, someone is benefitting at your expense, so why not receive what you are already paying for? You could contact the original adviser or company, or ask another adviser who should be able to have the fee changed to them, to help pay for providing

Tony Larkins CFP APFS Managing Director / IFA Chartered and Certified Financial Planner

you with on-going advice. Cost of a Child The latest study by Legal and General shows that it costs ÂŁ154,440 to raise a child to 18, and yet families spend more on pocket money and treats than they do on insurance. With only 29% having critical illness cover and 14% income protection, many families would have serious financial problems if a serious or long term illness struck. Clearly, when families have young/ dependent children, money can be tight, but consideration should be given to covering these insurance needs, just as we insure holidays, cars, houses etc. or keep spare tyres, life jackets, etc. You hope you never need them, but just in case... You should always seek qualified advice from an IFA, preferably a Certified (CFP) or Chartered Financial PlannerCM (APFS). If you have a financial question, e-mail: tlarkins@beaconwealth.co.uk

Gallery 1066

is bringing ROCK TO BALDOCK

Calling all Rock fans... legendary guitarist Ronnie Wood will be showcasing his spectacular collection ‘Iconic figures of Rock’ at the Gallery on the 20th and 21st of April, with a VIP preview on the 19th. Although he is best known as the guitarist for the Rolling Stones, he has also pursued a lifelong passion for art that has won him international recognition and critical acclaim. Wood describes his ‘awakening to art’ when as a

32

child he won a competition and had his drawings featured on the BBC TV program Sketch Club. His interest and obvious talent took him to the Ealing Art College, where coincidentally Freddie Mercury of Queen and Pete Townshend of The Who were also students. Wood’s artwork has been successfully exhibited in Europe, America and the Far East. Inextricably linked with his musical career, it features his fellow band members and other iconic figures from the world of rock music. He has also been acknowledged at home by the British artistic establishment - Brian Sewell describes him as “accomplished” and devoted an entire program to his artwork. Hayley Norman, Gallery Owner commented ‘We are absolutely delighted to be presenting Ronnie Wood’s remarkable collection at the gallery this year, it is a very exciting time in the art world and people are opening their eyes not only to the investment opportunities available but also to the transformation quality art can make in the home and workplace. This event is open to the public and we look forward to welcoming people to enjoy a fine art experience’. To find out more and to reserve your place at the VIP preview event please contact the gallery on 01462 622233 or email info@gallery1066fineart.com

Young Tree Pruning? Pruning goals for young trees focus primarily on plant health and structure. Remove dead, dying, diseased, crossing and conflicting limbs to maintain plant vitality. Structural pruning of young trees provides a strong framework for future growth. Pruning young trees can prevent structural problems that could require cabling and bracing later in life or could contribute to premature decline or failure. Emphasis should be placed on the following when pruning young trees: • Remove co-dominant or multiple leaders • Maintain a strong central leader especially in trees with excurrent habits • Maintain at least one-half the foliage on branches arising from the lower two-thirds of the tree. • Provide adequate spacing for primary scaffold limbs. • Maintain crown shape typical of the species. Remove branches, which protrude from the canopy and those, which grow inwardly or unnaturally downward. Dead, dying, diseased, broken, rubbing limbs, root suckers and water sprouts should be removed as necessary. Light thinning should be done as necessary to reduce weight of branches and shape the crown.

LAWN CARE

FOR April

Mowing Mow at least once a week now. Make sure mower has been serviced and blade replaced or sharpened. Fertiliser This is the time to feed and weed (preferably in that order). The fertiliser is predominately Nitrogen in a slow release form, but it may also need Phosphate and Potassium as well as vital trace elements to promote a vibrant lawn. Weed Control Once the weeds and grass are actively growing a selective herbicide to kill broad leaved weeds such as dandelions, daisies and clover within the grass can be applied. Patio/Driveway Weed Control Weeds can look unsightly at this time of year in patios and driveways. We can spray a total weed killer to kill them and keep weed free for up to 6 months.

Actions required in April • Mow Lawn At Least Once Per Week • Apply Spring Fertiliser To Produce Vibrant Green Lawn • Spray Weeds In Lawn With Selective Herbicide • Spray Drive/Path/Patios With Total Herbicide To Keep Weed Free For Summer Call Deborah, Simon or Richard on 01480 812393 e-mail - info@prolawncare.co.uk http://twitter.com/ProLawnCareUK http://www.facebook.com/ProLawnCareUK Got a Question? AWD XJ

PORSCHE CAYENNE You want a 911, but need more space and would rather have the commanding view of the road a 4x4 offers. Is the Porsche Cayenne the answer? We find out… What is it? It’s a Cayenne – Porsche’s roughty toughty offroader – but one that’s had a dose of steroids and some glitter liberally applied to its bodywork. Slotting into the range between the V8 S and the Turbo, the GTS comes with more focus and power and some distinctive styling options. What’s under the bonnet? A rather raucous 4.8-litre V8 that’s been uprated from 394bhp to 414bhp and boasts 515Nm of torque. Performance is far from the Turbo’s though; the GTS will hit 60mph in 5.7s and go on to 162mph. It sounds pretty special getting there though! Everything else has been on the sharpening block – the steering is crisper, the eightspeed gearbox shifts quicker, and the lowered ride height gives it an added edge on the road. What’s the kit like? Pretty impressive, but like all Porsches you’ll soon rack up Ford Fiesta-sized bills on the options. A communications pack costs £2,157, 21-inch black alloys are £1,513 and even the red paint will set you back £1,619. Our test car had a total of £13,760 worth of goodies…ouch. Any rivals? The ageing Range Rover Sport puts up a pretty good fight, but we’ve never tried a Rangie that

42

sounds as good as this GTS. Audi will soon be at the party with its SQ models, but that’s yet to be applied to its Q7. For a left field there’s always the Infiniti Vettel Edition, but that’s very expensive in comparison. So, not much choice out there at the moment. Is it any good? Although it’s incredibly quick and sounds tremendous, it can feel a little bit stressed out at times. By that we mean it feels on edge, twitchy even – perhaps the added sharpness has given it a little too much bite. However, there’s no doubting it has real presence on the road – it’s just the styling might not suit all tastes. The verdict We like the GTS treatment given to most Porsches. The 997 911 really benefitted from the work over, and the Panamera GTS we tried after this Cayenne worked fantastically well too. However, the offroader doesn’t feel quite right in this guise. It’s quick and sounds incredible, but feels like it’s pretending to be something that it’s not. The knowledge Model: Porsche Cayenne GTS Price: From £67,147 Engine: 4.8-litre, petrol Power: 414bhp, 515Nm Max speed: 162mph 0-60mph: 5.7s MPG (comb’d): 26.4 Emissions: 251g/km
