WILD TIMES

Don and Jonelle hit the trail

4

August 31, 1985 I meet my mountain lady — Jonelle was on the trail below Silver Peak, having a beer, in the company of Marlys and Dana. Paul McElroy and I were coming down from a climb of Silver Peak. Then it was off to

September 28, 1985

Marlys’ cabin for huckleberry pie. I asked for

Mount Sawyer. Our first summit! Then picnic on the

trail with Dana and friends. 6 miles RT/1100’ gain.

Paul and I, proud summiteers.

January 25, 1986 Amabalis Mountain (part way). Jonelle exults in another perfect winter day, on a ski trek with Don. 6 miles RT/1500’ gain.

January 26, 1986 Jonelle on a cross-country ski trip up Mount Catherine, by Snoqualmie Pass, with Don. Check out the two trekking poles. 6 miles RT/1500’ gain 7

June 8, 1986 Mount Dickerman Now here is a workout — to a snowy summit with huge mountain views. Here we are doing favorite thing: reaching a summit in the clouds, with no view. 8 miles RT/3800’ gain

8

August 10, 1986 North Twin Sister, west ridge An invigorating scramble up the red rocks of the mountain, some interesting hands-on moves. Wonderful sun at the top, with Mount Baker in our face.

However . . . . it was a tense descent via the steep north snowfield. No crampons or microspikes, no ice axes, hard snow because it was now in shade. I’m afraid I dragged Andy and Jonelle into a climb that I didn’t adequately prepare for. But it sure does make for a lasting memory. 6 miles RT/2500’ gain 9

September 20-21, 1986 Echo Rock Overnight in Spray Park, had it to ourselves. Bushmill’s Irish whiskey sitting at the edge of a grassy depression in the terrain. Next day up steep Echo Rock on the slopes of Mt. Rainier.

April 5, 1987 Silver Peak

1987

A good workout to get to a fine summit. We started much lower than usual because of snow on the road. 10/3000

July 4, 1987 Pinnacle Lake Rainy, but who cares? My dad built a fire —“better to light a fire than to curse the rain.” The hikers were Anita, Jonelle, Andy with his good old dad and me with my good old dad. 4/1000

11

September 26-27, 1987 Tomyhoi Peak (part way) A stone's throw from the summit (or was it the false summit?), but it looked a tad iffy for these two tired scramblers. Overnight just below Yellow Aster Butte, in a field of low-growing huckleberry. Tried to make liqueur out of huckleberries and Bushmills — terrible stuff. Next day hiked way up Tomyhoi Arm to a false summit, where we called it quits. I was chewing on some candy there (Rollos) and it pulled out my temporary crown. 14/4200

Jonelle walks through the autumn beauty of Tomyhoi Arm. In the distance is Mt. Shuksan.

12

December 26, 1987 Heather Lake Fun hike in deep snow, the day after Christmas. Jonelle soon learned to keep an eye on me whenever she walked under the boughs of a snow-covered tree — it was so satisfying to shake the branch as she walked under. 4/1500 13

June 3, 1988 Table Mountain

Jonelle’s 50th!!! Overnight at The Logs, cabins near Mt. Baker. Quite a crew: the guest of honor plus me, Andy, Dana, Marlys, Zita, Larry, Carol and Lanny. Then hike and ski the next day to Table Mountain, up to the top on a perfect sunny day. 4/1000

Happy on Table Mountain: Jonelle, Marlys, Dana and Andy.

The birthday girl on top of Table Mountain, with Mt. Shuksan behind.

15

August 6, 1988 White Chuck Mountain Good varied scramble, wildflowers galore, whiteout at the summit. A rewarding climb because of the variety of terrain, exposure, a bit of hands-on. But couldn’t see a thing from the top. We shall return! 7/2800 16

To Boston Basin. Heavy rain.

September 24, 1988

In Boston Basin. Heavy rain.

Finally, warm and dry. Campsite near Icicle Creek.

Boston Basin Never say die! We backpacked into Boston Basin despite heavy rain, following the old adage, “You’ll never hike in the Cascades if you only hike on sunny days.” We took one look at the cold, cloudy, wet basin and retreated to a motel to dry out. Next day to a campsite up Icicle Creek Road. A memorable foray. 6/3000 17

December 13, 1988 Red Mountain (part way)

Don’s 50th!!! Snowshoeing in the falling snow in Commonwealth Basin. We actually thought we might climb Red Mountain, what dreamers! We stopped at the base of the mountain, sat in the snow, lighted the stove and had some chili. 5/1800 18

Jonelle climbs Del Campo, Foggy Lake far below.

August 26, 1989 Del Campo Peak

1989

Oh boy, this is a tough but super rewarding scramble. Almost all the way to Gothic Basin, then a sharp right to scramble up toward the peak, then a series of ramps and landings that take you to the top. Thunderstorm hit as we neared the top, as a Mountaineers party hurried past us, heading down. We talked it over, decided to push on to the top. Reached it, then turned tail and got the hell out of there. 8/4300

September 2, 1989 Mt. Wow (part way) This is the mountain behind the cabin that I rented near the Nisqually entrance to Rainier National Park. Jonelle and I, Dana and Andy soon discovered that this was no walk in the woods. 5/2500

THE UPPER

Rune Lake

September 9-14, 1990 Upper Enchantments Little Annapurna and Enchantment Peak were climbs as part of a 5-day backpack into the Upper Enchantments, via Colchuck Lake and Aasgard Pass. Enchanting! And we had the entire wonderland to ourselves — amazing what you could do 30 years ago before the crowds arrived. Total trip: 26 miles, 8000' gain. 22

Colchuck Lake and a little nymphette.

June 29, 1991 Mt. Stickney (almost all the way) Almost to the summit — but not quite. An exposed gap to cross and I didn’t want to see my boy and my girl try it, even though Andy and Jonelle were game. 6/2500

1992

January 1, 1992

Mt. Si Ah, those were the days, when we got up early on New Year’s Day and headed out for a rigorous hike. A great team: Andy, Jonelle and Don. 8/3500

May 10, 1992 Vesper Peak (part way) Another wet-weather outing. We did our best — got all the way up and over Headlee Pass and up to the lake between Mt. Persis and Mt. Sperry. But the weather got the best of us — some hot drinks and then a sensible retreat. 7/2500

January 11, 1992 Lichtenwasser Lake Ski and snowshoe. Did Jonelle and I actually get to Lichtenwasser Lake on skis and snowshoes? Not really sure. It’s a steep, messy, rough route (not a trail) to the lake. 6/1500

1993 May 15-16, 1993 Mt. Pilchuck

March 24, 1993 Lake 22 Wet, bedraggled and happy after again hiking in the rain. The idea was to traverse from Lake 22 to Mt. Pilchuck, but we got just above Lake 22 and said to hell with it. Hiked in the rain for 5 hours. 6/1500 26

It was to be a day hike, a traverse via Lake 22 to Mt. Pilchuck. We made it from Lake 22 to the saddle above Hemple Lake, over the ridge to Pinnacle Lake, then toward Bathtub Lakes when we were caught by the coming night. Tiny fire, huddled beneath trees in a snowfield, no tent or sleeping bags. Next day to a saddle beneath Pilchuck, up sketchy steep hard snow to the summit. Scary and wonderful experience. 12/5000

Our accommodations for the night, a tiny bit of earth in the midst of an endless snowfield.

She can smile now, after getting to the top of this steep snowfield. A climber in front of us kicked steps in the hard snow. Thank God for ice axes. From here it was a 27 short hike to the Mt. Pilchuck fire lookout.

September 11-13, 1993

Off to climb Mt. Stuart with Andy and his friend Maynard. Check out Jonelle’s pack!

This is a good test for anyone, skiing up an endless snowfield. Spectacular trip because Mt. Rainier and its huge Nisqually Glacier are within arm’s reach. 10/5000 Jonelle on skis below Mt. Rainier.

Jonelle and I were not seeing each other (much), so no hikes in 1996.

May 1, 1997 Lake Serene For once we picked a sunny day. 7/2000

1997

July 26, 1997 Minotaur Lake 4/1750

August 8-10 1997 Stiletto Peak Don, Jonelle, Ron and Penny, overnight at Twisp Pass — endless views — and the next day an invigorating scramble up Stiletto Peak. Some hands-on climbing, satisfying and enjoyable. Below the peak was a small lake with chunks of ice floating in it, so Jonelle went in for a swim — for about 10 seconds. 15/4000 31

August 22-24, 1997 Thunder Lake Here’s the scene of mountain and meadow and lake beauty that greeted us as we topped the ridge above Thunder Lake. Pure heaven. We camped for two nights beside a tiny stream. As with so many of our outings, we had this wonderful place to ourselves, a blessing that now, in 2019, is a thing of the past. 14/2700 32

1998 May 31 - June 1, 1998 Mt. Persis Overnight at the summit of Persis and then an exploratory hike toward Mt. Index. 10/3000

Our camp on the summit of Mt. Persis.

33 Jonelle slowly disappears into the mist during our exploration of a portion of the route up Mt. Index.

June 6, 1998 Mt. Index A long, long day — 15 hours. We began at a creek far below Mt. Persis, walked up an abandoned road for a mile or so, then traversed for another mile upward across a jumble of boulders. Now we were at the entrance to the long ridge connecting Persis with Index. We kept hiking, with no specific goal in mind. We never, ever mentioned the summit of Index — it seemed too tough a climb for 3 days after Jonelle’s 60th birthday. But after climbing a short but steep snow face (with no runout), we looked at each other and knew we were going to reach the summit. Hooray! 10/3700

Jonelle on her way to Mt. Index, with Mt. Persis in the background.

Mt. Index from the east. No surprise that we climbed it from the west.

July 11, 1998 Whitechuck Mountain Another whiteout!l I wonder what the view is like from the summit of Whitechuck. We were up there twice but saw only a whiteout. 7/2800

On top of the huge rocks above Thunder Lake. I’m here with Dick, Paul and Lisa.

August 6-8, 1998 Thunder Lake Two nights of camping at our gorgeous secret lake. We just can’t stay away from this heavenly spot. Don, Jonelle, Lisa and Paul, and Dick McConaughy came in for a day. 14/2700 Lisa and Don on top of Whitechuck in a whiteout.

36

September 4-6, 1999 Hidden Lake Lookout We were going to camp near Hidden Lake Peak, but we discovered that the lookout hut was vacant — so we took it for two stormy nights. What a grand adventure. Two days and nights at the lookout perched on boulders atop a sharp prominence next door to the actual summit. 8/3500 Don struggles in from the cold and the snow. Jonelle takes it easy inside the hut.

The Dolomites, Italy Two nights at Refugio Lavaredo in the midst of these eerie, spectacular rock formations. We ventured onto parts of a couple of the via ferrata (the iron way, or the iron road), narrow trails cut out of the cliffs, with extreme dropoffs along the way. The routes are protected with metal cables to hold on to.

November 10, 2016 Silver Peak Jonelle and I met 31 years ago on the Pacific Crest Trail below Silver Peak, so we now planned a hike to the summit. Excellent trail the first half, then a grunt up a steep, muddy hillside to a ridge trail, then up a huge talus field, finally up a rock jumble to the summit. We were buffeted constantly on the upper areas by a wind of maybe 7 or 8 mph, with gusts of 20 or 25. So we grit our teeth and kept going. So did Satchi.

Frenchman Coulee What a place! A geologist’s wonderland of basalt cliffs and columns. And a favorite with rock climbers, though only a few were here today because of the heat. Jonelle and I love the out of doors. The freshness, the light, the challenge, the beauty, the majesty, the companionship. Since we met in 1985 we have hiked many trails, reached many passes and lakes, climbed many summits. And here they are, all the hikes we have taken together — and of course we were accompanied by others on many of these outings. We didn’t go all the way on some of these and that’s noted in the main book.
