EDITOR’S LETTER
Longing for spring
B
By the time this issue hits the streets we’ll have less than a month of winter remaining, and I hope the weeks pass quickly. It’s been a pretty mild winter, even by Georgia standards, yet still I’m eager for it to move on. I long for longer days, warmer temperatures, sunnier skies and, more than anything, the pastelcolored landscape that only spring can bring us. This longing only increased when, just days into the new year, a dear friend sent one of the most gorgeous floral arrangements I’ve ever received. The greenery was lovely to begin with, but each day a new flower blossomed. One day a daffodil, another day a tulip, another day a hyacinth. My co-workers and I enjoyed seeing what new wonder had unfolded each morning when we arrived at the office. So it’s not like my winter was completely flower-less. And thanks to the new sewing hobby, and with more than a little help from the new quilt shop downtown, I’ve been stitching up a fabric garden with a magnificent array of roses. Taking my first vacation day of the year on a sunny Wednesday in January, I hauled rose-print fabrics, sewing machine, ruler, rotary cutter and self-healing mat to the Court Square for a day of quilting lessons. The other ladies in the class were all
experienced sewers, and their fancy machines whirred quietly, perfectly along. Zuh zuh zuh zuh zuh. Zuh-zuh-zuh-zuh-zuh. From my work station, things sounded a little differently. Zuh zuh zuh zuh ker BLONK ker BLONK ker BLONK. It’s really difficult to keep secret the fact you don’t know how to install your bobbin when the sound effects are so apparent to the rest of the class. But God bless our instructor and my classmates, they endured my newbie mistakes so graciously I ended the day mighty encouraged — and with the first of several machine-stitched quilt blocks I would sew over the next few weeks. Then I took a few days and went to Savannah and Charleston where a sewing friend and I made a tour of all the local needlework and sewing shops. Now I need to schedule the rest of my vacation days for the year just so I can work with all the great fabrics and patterns I’ve collected. In studying the old quilt patterns that inspire so many of the ones available today, I can’t help observing that flowers seem always to have been a love of quilters and appear in many of
their designs. Were they, too, wintertime stitchers longing for the arrival of spring? As the season approaches, there’s just one challenge I haven’t yet solved: how to get the sewing machine table out on the front porch. See you in the springtime! Fondly,
Angela

Never one to collect merely for the sake of collecting, interior designer Stan Topol actually uses all of his quilts and rugs as part of his home’s decor.
Paris. New York. Los Angeles. Newnan. While Newnan may be a fabulous place to live and work, it is not normally a town mentioned in the same breath with the world powerhouses. But more and more world travelers are calling Newnan “home.” In 1992, Stan Topol was ready for a change. The internationallyrecognized, Atlanta-based interior designer was looking for a new hometown. He decided to keep his office, Stan Topol & Associates, in Midtown Atlanta, where it had been since the company’s founding in the 1970s. He became very discouraged by his efforts until a chance meeting with a woman in an antiques shop in Alpharetta. “She advised me to move to an old town, a place with roots. Some place like Newnan,” Topol said. He recalled the story as if it were a couple 14

of weeks back, rather than over a decade ago. “I looked at so many houses and nothing was working. Then I saw this log cabin. It was the very last house I was supposed to look at. Before I even rounded the bend in the drive, I knew it was mine.” His voice is soft and gentle; it’s one of gentility and refinement. Raised in Greenville, Miss., Topol’s Southern manners and charm must have served him well when, early in his career, he was associated with the inestimable Billy Baldwin, known to many as “the dean of American interior design.” Through this connection, Topol met some of New York society’s most famous personalities such as Babe Paley, Slim Keith and Gloria Guinness. His memories and experiences from this exciting period were just the beginning of what has become his
He’s an internationally-known interior designer with offices in Midtown Atlanta, but Stan Topol says he has no regrets about moving to Newnan. Cabingate Farm, shown in scenes opposite, also is home to Topol’s two English Cocker Spaniels and 11 Thoroughbred and Warmblood horses.

“I learned something from Billy that has been my motto from the beginning and it has worked pretty well: ‘We’re going to do it my way – the right way!’” Topol laughed softly, but his eyes are steel – no mess-ups. “I always wanted a log cabin, ever since I was a little boy,” said the designer. “And I use all of my collections at home. I don’t believe in ‘collecting’ just to say ‘it’s valuable.’ I use my quilts, my rugs. I love them all.” Cabingate Farm is extremely comfortable and comforting. There are stories behind every piece in the house. The master bedroom, which Topol added after purchasing the home from its previous owners, is awash with morning light, and horses and pastures are visible out of all three walls of windows. The bed is dressed in traditional Irish linens that are secured with one-of-akind “buttons” made from Irish coins. The living area is highlighted with Amish and Americana quilts, pillows and two chairs upholstered with old Amish quilts. The pattern was so difficult to piece, the upholsterer said ‘Never come back!’ upon completing the job.

A highlight in the television room is a wall mounted piece cut from an old Opera House backdrop and some handmade puppets and baskets from the Island of Crete in Greece. It is said that nothing can be handmade in remote Crete because materials are unavailable, yet where others are unable to make things happen, Topol seems to find a way. so busy, full-time caretakers live on the property to care for all the animals and keep up the property when he’s traveling. Because Topol travels to clients all over the country and his office is in Atlanta, he doesn’t get to socialize in Newnan as much as he’d like. Most of his socializing revolves around his horses and fox hunts, organized by Hal and Linda Berry. But even when it comes to the hunt, he really enjoys the social aspect of it — the food, the gathering, the time spent with nice people who love animals. In fact, it was through these hunts that he met Joan and René Latiolais, a Newnan couple whose home he recently renovated. “I absolutely adore Joan and René,” Topol said. “She has such a decorator’s eye. It is rare to work with such a client. When she came to my office for our preliminary meeting, I finished my presentation and she said to me, ‘Can’t you do better?’ I knew this was going to be a great relationship. And it is.” “I hope to have many more clients in Newnan,” Topol said. “I think there is a misconception that folks think that they can’t afford our services. But our company handles all sizes of projects and I would welcome the opportunity to talk to people.” Topol has several exciting projects 18

But he’s most excited about personally being asked by Mrs. Alana Shepherd of The Shepherd Center to oversee and coordinate a team of talented Atlanta designers to make the center a much more visually stimulating and exciting space for patients and visitors alike. “I have absolutely no regrets about moving to Newnan,” Topol said. “I love it here. When Dale Sizemore first noticed Nancy Miller, he may have seen her as the “brainiac” of his college Renaissance to Modern Art class. In turn, she noted that the name “Sizemore” emblazoned on the back of his shirt might just be a good conversation starter. After a brief chat, the two discovered they had things in common, just enough that they began enjoying lunch dates, and eventually Nancy tested him with some Middle Eastern cooking. “I wanted to make sure he was bold enough to try any foods. I didn’t want to get serious about him otherwise!” she quipped. The couple was married on Dec. 29, 1976 at Moreland United Methodist Church. After living in Texas for a few years, the young Sizemores returned to Moreland, where Nancy’s family had a long heritage. “I wanted (our future children) to have roots,” Nancy said. Roots weren’t all the Sizemore children would enjoy in Moreland. Nancy and Dale nurtured their children’s artistic abilities in many ways, encouraging them to express themselves with a variety of

He held his first one-man show in December at the Centre for Performing and Visual Arts in Newnan. While the rest of his family leans toward the three-dimensional, James prefers the two-dimensional world of oil painting and etching. His favorite artists are Ernst Fuchs, Marc Chagall, and Georgia artist Eddie Owens Martin, a.k.a. St. EOM. His biggest inspiration is his girlfriend Jeri Lee, and she can be seen as a figure in many of his works. James said he wants his art to entertain. “I want people to find my images interesting, and it would be nice if they used their imagination to understand a narrative,” he said. filmmaking and is a music enthusiast. The youngest of the clan is Daniel. At 18 years old, he is a freshman at UGA, majoring in Sculpture. That choice isn’t very surprising to his parents. Daniel began sculpting in his early years, scooping up clay and creating objects while his mother threw pottery in her studio. “I like to make sculptures that lead the viewer’s eye in a direction,” he said. “As the viewer walks around my sculptures, I try to make (the piece) change gradually so that it looks like it is moving instead of the viewer.” Daniel gleans his inspiration from nature, and enjoys both organic and geometric forms as well as Asian art. Daniel looks forward to his artistic development. “I really want to experiment in many different mediums while in college so I can have an idea of what I want to do when I leave,” he said. Daniel attended Governor’s Honors in the summer of 2004, and one of his pieces was exhibited in the art show there. He also exhibited in the 2003 and 2004 All-State Festival of Art and Design. Five of his pieces were accepted for the Georgia High School Ceramic Arts Awards and Symposium, where he received first place in sculpture, second in vessels, and was awarded one of the top three portfolio awards. Members of the Sizemore family have enjoyed traveling to Italy, England, Ireland and Wales. “(We) always come back rejuvenated and excited about working and teaching in the arts,” Dale said. Though his art may take him elsewhere, James said Coweta County was a great place to grow up. “I love Moreland,” he said. “I love the days, whether they’re sunny or gray. I love the nights, always dark. My friend and I go out riding our bicycles and it’s especially exciting at 2 o’clock in the morning when the moon is bright.” Spoken like a true artist. NCM

imagine what Newnan was like before all of the construction. I would like if it were a smaller-town feel and people all knew each other. For example, I recently ran out of my asthma prescription, and a chain pharmacy gave me a real runaround about it when it was after hours. In LaGrange, the pharmacist knew me and my doctor and it would have been no problem. However, I called my pharmacist in LaGrange and he recommended a local independent pharmacist up here that gives that kind of service. Those are the kind of things you lose and sacrifice when you get too big. On the other hand, my wife is from Tampa and she likes all the new things. It reminds her of how she grew up, and there is something for being able to hop in the car and having lots of choices for dinner.

As a boy, young Orazio La Manna knew his destiny was to create wonders at the piano. But his “piano” is not the musical instrument. Rather, this piano is what professional chefs sometimes call the stovetop, and Chef La Manna plays it very, very well. His culinary talents play out not in a fine dining restaurant but in Atlanta’s own Turner Field. At age 15, he began fulfilling his gastronomic destiny with a rigorous, classical European-style chef ’s apprenticeship. La Manna has enjoyed a long and rewarding career and has worked with many stellar organizations including the illustrious Four Seasons Hotels and the Corel Center (home of the Ottawa Senators Hockey Team). He was also a member of the Team Canada Culinary Olympic Team several times. Five months ago Canada’s loss became Georgia’s gain when La Manna was hired as executive chef for Turner Field Sports & Entertainment, in charge of supervising the entire food service operations at Turner Field. La Manna, his wife Valerie and son Nicholas just completed construction of their home on the lake in the SummerGrove development in Newnan. “I was in charge of the kitchen, and Valerie got everything else,” the chef said with a laugh. “We are so excited about moving into the new house. We love it here in Newnan. We enjoy going to downtown Newnan and taking advantage of locally-owned shops.” He mused, “Two things I really look forward to are getting to know some local chefs and ‘talk shop’ with them. I like it simple, elegant and uncomplicated, so the flavors match.” His classic perfectionism carries over in his duties running the topof-the-line 755 Club, a gorgeous, contemporary, airy space that features views of both Turner Field and the downtown skyline. The large private club is available for weddings, receptions and business events and catered by La Manna and his staff. He is also in charge of the My South Cooks Suite where the chef performs live cooking demonstrations in the baseballthemed kitchen suite. Other duties on his roster include creating menus for the Chop House and Luxury Suites, and supervising and preparing menus for the Owners’ Boxes for both the Braves and visiting teams. Next time someone moves in to your neighborhood, be extra special nice; it may be a celebrity chef, and you might be able to garner a dinner invitation for some wonderful food that is “classic with a twist.”

The only game that counts By Alex McRae, Photos by Alex McRae and the Cash family

rom the time he could lift a baseball, all Tim Cash wanted to do was throw it. As he starred on the pitcher’s mound at Newnan High, DeKalb Community College and Troy University, Cash dreamed his arm would carry him all the way to baseball’s Major Leagues. When he was drafted by the Houston Astros in 1984, Cash didn’t think twice about leaving college. “It was the pros,” he says. “That was the ultimate. I knew I was on the way.” Then an ankle injury in 1985 knocked him to his knees. Literally. “It really made me think twice,” Cash says. “My life wasn’t focused on anything else. I started asking myself if I couldn’t play baseball, what would I do? Then I asked myself why I was on this planet. I knew the answer to that question would determine what I should do. So in November 1985, I got down on my knees and accepted Christ. That answered all my questions.” His fastball didn’t get any better, but his personal life did. “I realized the dream I once had wasn’t as great as the dream I started living,” he says. “It was a life-changing experience.” Tim Cash, son of Earl and Glenda Cash of Newnan, was interested in baseball as a Little Leaguer, below left, as a young boy meeting legendary ballplayer Phil Niekro, center, and at the beginning of a pro baseball career, at right. Today Cash serves as national director of a baseball ministry and works with players such as friend John Smoltz of the Atlanta Braves, opposite.

Drafted by the Houston Astros in 1984 and traded to the L.A. Dodgers in 1988, Tim Cash of Newnan joined the baseball ministry UPI in 1989.
When he reported to spring training in 1986, Cash teamed with other players who shared his faith, including the Astros’ power-hitting third baseman Glenn Davis and pitcher Jeff Calhoun.
Cash’s minor league salary was meager but in late 1986, Calhoun and his wife paid for Cash to attend a Christian leadership conference in Cocoa Beach, Fla. He met Tom Roy, who in 1981 had founded Unlimited Potential, Inc. (UPI) to spread the word of God through personal witness and evangelistic baseball clinics. Cash and Roy became friends, and Roy was there to provide support and encouragement as Cash worked his way through the minor leagues and some troubling injuries. Cash came back from the 1985 ankle surgery and a 1987 elbow injury suffered when he was with the Astros’ AA farm team in Columbus. In 1988 Cash was traded to the L.A. Dodgers and assigned to the club’s AAA farm team. He was still recovering from the last injury, but he was just one step below the Major Leagues. Once again, Cash’s hopes soared. But not for long. In August 1988, a shoulder injury ended his playing career. Instead of feeling sorry for himself, Cash told Roy he felt led to work in UPI’s baseball ministry. In January 1989, he joined Roy and UPI in Warsaw, Ind. In 1993, Cash moved to the Atlanta area, where he now lives with his wife, Barb, and five children, Rachel, Benji, Jesse, Hannah and Caleb.

Cash now serves as UPI’s National Director. His job description is simple: stay active in the professional baseball community and be available to anyone who wants to talk about Christ. “You never know what’s in a person’s heart,” he says. “Lots of players know they need something, but don’t know what. I’ve got an option for them that a lot of them find right.” Those players now help Cash spread his message to an even larger audience. On a recent winter night, more than 1,200 men and boys packed the

huge dining hall at First Baptist Church in Snellville. The program featured three of baseball’s biggest names: Milwaukee Brewers manager and former Braves coach Ned Yost, all-star catcher Jason Varitek of the Boston Red Sox and the Atlanta Braves’ all-world pitcher John Smoltz. The three shared the stage with Cash, a close friend and spiritual coach who had a role in bringing them all to Christ. After some humorous baseball stories, the Major Leaguers and Cash shared their personal testimony and explained how serving God has made them better ballplayers and better people. At the end, the crowd cheered like the Braves had just won the World Series. The boys and their fathers came to rub elbows with some personal heroes. THE THOUGHTFUL GARDENER
Azaleas:
Jewels of the South
Story, photos and artwork by Katherine McCall
“In the South, perhaps more than any other region, we go back to our home in dreams and memories, hoping it remains what it was on a lazy, still summer’s day twenty years ago.”
t
his quote by Willie Morris is one of my favorites and, for me, the memory is not of a summer’s day but a South Georgia afternoon in the spring filled with my grandfather’s precious azaleas. We are slowly walking down the long, sandy drive that leads to the house, myself barefoot and he in his shiny black wingtips. On either side enormous azaleas wrap us in a secret world of flamboyant hot pink blooms topped by an azure Georgia sky peeking through the towering pines. There are at least 200 azaleas, all rooted by him and all lovingly raised in his homemade cold frame. When the plants were knee-high, my Mother remembers, metal buckets in the floorboards of his Bonneville splashed well water as he drove down the drive to water each one himself. Enjoying those azaleas is one of my most intense and treasured memories of childhood. Their exuberance and loveliness 38

were, and are, the essence of Easter and a hallmark of the South. Don Hastings in “Gardening in the South” calls them the “jewels of the garden which make the landscape of the South unique.” He goes on to point out, “Our jewels, as a group, are better here than perhaps anywhere else, and we should make the most of them.” My grandfather did just that, and he planted a loving memory in my heart that has endured. In contrast to the physical beauty of the azalea, its history is somewhat unremarkable. The original native azaleas, Azalea nudiflora, were found thriving in the woodlands of North America. Their description from Stephen Elliot in A Sketch of the Botany of South Carolina and Georgia, 1821, still describes them: “A shrub 2-8 feet high, producing many stems from the root. ... This is one of the most beautiful plants which adorn the forests of North America. Some of the varieties are considered by many persons as the most ornamental of our shrubs … Grows in rich, dry soils and along the margins of swamps and creeks. Flowers March-May.”
“It is a flower of unsurpassed beauty in its season … — Robert Nelson (The Southern Cultivator, 1857)

But it was the introduction of the Japanese and Chinese azaleas in the mid-1800s that began the widespread plantings of azaleas. Following the example of Rev. Drayton at Magnolia Gardens near Charleston, people began planting Azalea indica all over the South. Fruitland Nurseries in Augusta was the first nursery to offer
azaleas to gardening enthusiasts in this area. (This nursery would later become the site of the Augusta National, home to the Masters Golf Tournament.) Robert Nelson of Fruitland Nurseries offered the following description of Azalea indica in The Southern Cultivator, 1857: “This beautiful shrub, so well known as a greenhouse plant, is perfectly hardy in this latitude … It is a flower of unsurpassed beauty in its season, March and April; and those only who have seen it in its perfection can form an idea of its richness and grandeur. The azaleas are near kin to the far-famed Rhododendron, almost as beautiful, and much easier of cultivation. The colors are very different, as crimson, purple, white, red, salmon, scarlet and variegated … New varieties are raised from seed which should be saved as soon as ripe.”
DENTISTRY FOR YOUR ENTIRE FAMILY
As in life, making the most of the jewels we are blessed with can be a challenge and must begin with a well thought out plan. Fred Galle’s Azaleas thoroughly examines the relationship of the azalea to the elements of the garden: design, composition, scale and texture. For example, when selecting the color, or colors, take into account the color of your home and what will be blooming at the time of the azalea’s bloom. In addition, consider the summer, fall, and winter landscape and how your azalea will relate to plantings and structures in the garden. It is also important to plan for growth and place the shrubs where they have room to expand. There are many factors, which Galle examines, that contribute to flourishing plants and an esthetically pleasing landscape. Galle appropriately notes, “Growing

plants well is a challenge, but an even greater challenge is to assemble them into a pleasing garden.... Fortunately, with the large number of species and hybrids from which to choose, one can usually find an azalea to fit the needs and requirements of the site. It is doubtful if any other group of woody plants is so versatile.” Not only are azaleas versatile but also they can prove to be somewhat hardy if given the right start, most importantly good soil and some shade. Don Hastings recommends preparing a deep bed with hummus and perlite, then planting shallow (leave the root ball about an inch above surrounding soil). Azaleas are acid lovers and will do better in soils with a pH above 6.2. Do not let mulch accumulate around the lower stems as it can cause crown rotting. As always, purchase your plants from a nursery that can provide advice and recommendations for selection and planting. NCM
SELECTING AZALEAS Mike Cunningham of Country Gardens Farm in Newnan shares his top 10 picks for azaleas. 1. Encore Azaleas. Reblooming varieties. Several colors to choose from. 2. Hilda Niblett. Low growing, late season blooms. Soft pink bloom with deeper rose pink throat. 3. Gumpo Azaleas. Low growing variety. Late season blooms. Pink or white. 4. Watchet. Repeat blooming variety. Pink flowers. 5. Red Ruffles. Larger growing variety. Red hose in hose ruffled blooms.
(Hose in hose means each trumpet-shaped flower has another trumpet-shaped flower inside it.) 6. George Tabor. Very large growing plant with large lavender blooms. 7. Amagasa. Compact grower with very rich, deep pink blooms. 8. Hinodigiri. Small to medium size plant with early season red blooms. 9. G.G. Gerbing. Very large growing plant with large white blooms. 10. Macrantha. Medium growing variety with a late season rich pink bloom.

Melanie Rose Thompson of Newnan and Jamal Booker of Annapolis, Md. were married on Oct. 15, 2005 at 4 p.m. at Mt. Olive United Methodist Church in Newnan. The couple met while students at different colleges in Atlanta.
Mt. Olive United Methodist Church in Newnan was the setting for Melanie Thompson’s wedding to Jamal Booker on Oct. 15, 2005. Like many couples today, they chose a number of contemporary touches to make the ceremony uniquely their own.
Jamal’s best friend and Melanie’s ex-boyfriend, who both attended school with Jamal, ended up as roommates for one week because of a mix-up of room assignments. Jamal and Melanie met briefly through them but only spoke that one time. Months later, one of Melanie’s best friends, who attended another institution, had a friend who needed to get in touch with his cousin. She asked Melanie to contact his cousin, and it turns out that he was Jamal’s roommate. Melanie and Jamal became friends and the rest is history. Jamal proposed to Melanie on Dec. 1, 2002. He was visiting for Thanksgiving and told Melanie he had missed his flight. He took Melanie to Centennial Park where a singer serenaded her. When he proposed, Melanie happily said yes. Melanie selected her dress because it was unique. “It was actually the first dress that I tried on,” she said. She chose Mt. Olive as her location because it is her family church. But that’s where tradition ended in the planning.

“After the ceremony we had people telling us it was one of the most unique wedding experiences they had ever been to,” says Jamal. “They actually made an announcement before the ceremony to have open minds because it was going to be like something they have never seen before,” says Melanie. The bridesmaids entered carrying candles in their bouquets. The groomsmen entered from the back carrying bamboo sticks, which had a biblical meaning. They met the Poplar Grove in Newnan was the site of Melanie and Jamal Booker’s October wedding reception.

girls and did a four step and took them to their seats. Instead of having the bridesmaids on one side and the groomsmen on the other, the girls sat in front and the guys stood behind them on both sides. Tropical trees and plants gave the church the look of the Garden of Eden. The couple arranged for a Praise Team to usher in the spirit before the ceremony, which many guests had never seen at a wedding before. Melanie and Jamal were married by her brother, who is a minister. The couple wrote their own vows. Their reception was held at Poplar Grove in Newnan where a six-piece band performed. Melanie and Jamal enjoyed a seven-day honeymoon in Spain and Morocco. The Bookers now reside in Newnan. NCM

Christy Williamson of Newnan and Benjamin Bass of Bremen were married on July 16, 2005 at 5:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Newnan. The couple met through Ben’s cousins during college and dated for six and a half years. Their wedding date is sentimental to them because it falls during the week of their seven-year anniversary. Benjamin and Christy took up hiking as an extracurricular activity to spend time together. The activity was special to both of them, so on Christmas Eve 2004, Ben asked for Christy’s hand in marriage after a hike at Raven Cliff Falls in Helen. Christy happily said yes. One of Christy’s fondest memories was the night before her wedding. She, her mother Nancy, Whitney, and their
older sister Brooke had “girl time.” It was the first time all three sisters had been at home together since Brooke left for college. Christy’s wedding day began
Christy & Benjamin with her bridal brunch. After getting their hair and nails done, she and her bridesmaids dressed in the bridal room of First Baptist, her family church. Christy’s gown was a Maggie Sottero design. The ceremony was performed by Scooter Thompson, Christy’s youth director during high school, who wrote personalized vows for the couple. About 200 people were in attendance. The reception was held at White Oak Golf and Country Club. The couple arrived in style in a ’64 red Mustang convertible. Christy and Ben honeymooned in St. Lucia. They now reside in Carrollton.

at the Ritz Carlton’s Atlantic Grill on Dec. 23 of 2004 in downtown Atlanta. His friend “cancelled” on them, and they were left alone to dine in a private booth with rose petals and candles. The waiter brought Whitney a platter and, to her surprise, she found her ring amongst a bed of rose petals. Christy’s proposal was planned for the next day, so Adam and Ben made sure the sisters didn’t talk to
One day Adam and his friends were outside Whitney’s apartment building playing football. The ball sailed into her neighbor’s back windshield and shattered it. It turns out the windshield was already broken and the guys had only made it worse, but a spark was definitely lit between Whitney and Adam. Adam masterminded a plan to make Whitney’s proposal a surprise. He arranged for an elegant dinner
each other for 24 hours. They were ecstatic to learn they were both going to be brides. Like Christy, Whitney also wore a Maggie Sottero design. “When I put the dress on, I just knew I had the perfect dress,” she said. “It made me look like I was a princess.” Whitney wanted to get married in Newnan and heard about Something Special from her sister. The date is set, location secured, dream dress ordered and being made. The next critical step during the busy wedding season may well be the selection of the wedding cake, and the Coweta County area is home of two of the South’s most talented cake designers. Like so many great Southern cooks, Angie Mosier of the Blue-Eyed Daisy Bakeshop in Palmetto learned the art of cake decorating from her mother. Literally beginning by her mother’s side as a little girl, Mosier turned out cakes with her Easy Bake Oven. She graduated to full-size cakes and eventually began offering her beautifully decorated cakes for weddings and other occasions to friends and associates. Mosier was trapped in a corporate job and working her wedding cake business on the side when fate came calling in the form of her good friend and nationally-known garden designer Ryan Gainey. He asked her to design a cake for a magazine photo shoot, replicating a marble garden statue filled with marble fruits, flowers and leaves. Her success with that cake led to a full-time business. She eventually branched out into food styling and has had cakes and other pastry appear in such magazines as Town and Country and Veranda. Eventually Mosier and her husband Johnny met Steve and Marie Nygren, who proposed they open a bakeshop at the Serenbe Community, with the result being the architecturally delightful Blue-Eyed Daisy Bakeshop. Soothing exposed brick interiors, hardwood floors, and beautiful farm tables combine the warm, cozy feeling of a local “in” spot with an old time bakeshop that invites lingering over a cup of coffee and house confectionary. The Blue-Eyed Daisy features Southern style sweets and savories made using the freshest local This colorful cake was created by Sharon Alexander of Sweet Sensations bakery in Newnan. MARCH/APRIL

ingredients. It has become a local hangout of sorts, in addition to serving as wedding cake central. “I can make any kind of cake, and do all of the fondant frostings, the basket weaves, everything,” Mosier said. “But in my heart I love the old-fashioned cakes that look like something a loving relative would make. I like that you can see the brush strokes of the knife in the frostings. I think that my cakes look really tasty and they are!” Mosier often uses her grandmother’s recipe for butter cake or “plain” cake, as she called it. “I want guests to eat the cake with little left over,” Mosier said, smiling. “I love using fresh flowers on a cake when it’s appropriate. It’s especially
nice if they are from the bride’s garden because personal touches are important.” “I tell brides that everything doesn’t need to match, and don’t expect your wedding cake designer to

ribbons, leaves. It’s all so classy looking. I can make buttercream look smooth but I would prefer that everything that leaves here is the fondant frosting.” Alexander echoes much of Mosier’s advice to brides when it comes to selecting a wedding cake. “I am creating a custom cake for them and don’t want to recreate someone else’s design for them; it’s not fair to the bride, it’ll never turn out right for them,” Alexander said. She also says a bride should bring a photo of her gown and know where the wedding will be held. Alexander will help with cake and filling flavors because she offers 14 cake flavors and 15 fillings. However, most local brides stick with the Vanilla with Buttercream frosting, while Atlanta brides are often a bit more adventuresome in their choices. Sweet Sensations recently increased its menu to include sandwiches as well as the cakes, cookies and other goodies made in the shop. “People kept asking us for a few lunch items and so we added yummy homemade sandwiches on Kaiser rolls,” Alexander said. With such fabulous designers in our area, whatever cake decision local brides make will surely take the cake. NCM

ou never know where love will lead you. Or when. Sunrise was still hours off when I parked in the puddle of light in front of the all-night convenience store a few miles outside Pine Mountain. The platinum blonde behind the counter almost choked on her chew when I raced in and hollered, “This is an emergency! I need some red wigglers!” She stepped back, eyed me cautiously and said, “Huh?” “My son’s getting married in 10 hours,” I bleated. “I need red wigglers. Worms. You know … fish bait.”
My expression stopped her in mid-chew. She took another step back. “And they got ’em at the hardware store in town,” she squeaked. As I dashed out the door, she added, “But they ain’t open yet, neither.” I drove off, found the hardware store, sat on my hands to stop the shaking and settled in for a long wait. Since the day my son announced he was getting hitched I’d wondered what my role would be. As his best man I knew I had to make it through the ceremony without fainting or losing the
hit high gear. I gulped nervously each time his bride and her family sailed flawlessly through another of the thousand chores required to pull off a picture-perfect event. As I watched my son book honeymoon hotel rooms, attend dozens of pre-nuptial parties and master the art of saying “Yes, dear” to everything his sweetie suggested, my blood pressure crept up. When his mom planned and pulled off a fabulous rehearsal dinner to which my only contribution was a dash of cash, I shuddered.
“My son’s getting married in 10 hours,” I bleated. “I need red wigglers. Worms. You know … fish bait.” The last two words seemed to register. She exhaled slowly, then waved her hand toward the dark expanse beyond the parking lot and said, “They sell ’em over at West Point Lake. But they ain’t open yet.”

Weddings are a $50 billion business in the U.S.A., but there’s precious little information out there about how to be the father of the groom. I showed up prepared for any emergency that could be handled with duct tape and jumper cables but soon realized my main chore would be keeping my boy and his groomsmen occupied with relatively harmless, non-fatal activities until the midafternoon wedding commenced. When the guys decided to kill the time killing fish I said “Great” and sought some bait. It worked like a charm. No fish were harmed, but hooking tree limbs and each other kept the guys occupied and left me free to tend to other chores. Bridesmaids and brides get familiar with their getups long before wedding day. Grooms and groomsmen usually pick up their rented gear on the way to the wedding and don’t try it on until minutes before the ceremony starts. Missing cufflinks, shirt studs or suspenders can be a problem, and I was determined my baby boy was going to be looking his best. I checked his outfit from tie to shoelaces and did the same for mine. No problems. When I had taken care of fishing and formalwear I turned my attention to sins of the flesh, which I planned to counter with the dozen handkerchiefs I bought on sale at the hardware store. The wedding was taking place on the lawn of a charming historic farmhouse. The house also served as the pre-ceremony holding area for the boys and dressing room for the girls. That left plenty of opportunities for some unplanned “show and tell.” I stood guard at the door to the

room where the guys were sequestered, ready to use one of the handkerchiefs to blindfold my boy to prevent an accidental sighting of his bride before she walked down the aisle. I was ready to use the others on the groomsmen to keep “accidental” bridesmaid sightings from setting off inappropriate outbreaks of lust. But everyone behaved, the ceremony went off without a hitch

The day was over all too soon. Shortly before sundown the happy couple made their escape. Mattie and William Conner of Newnan were wed on March 5, 1965 and have now celebrated 40 years of marriage. This relationship was a second marriage for both and is a testament that things can definitely work the second time around. “OK, I’ll tell you a little short story,” says William. “Back when I was a teenager, I had a wisdom tooth and it had to be cut out. I went to the dentist. In the short time that I was under that gas, I had a dream. I dreamt I married a blond-haired woman and she ran away with another man. And it came true.” To his disbelief, this dream would play itself out to be his first marriage,

which lasted about five or six years. Mattie experienced a similar disappointment with her first marriage. She found herself a single mother with four young children. Understandably, her pain caused her to avoid men altogether. William asked Mattie out on a date several times, and each time she stood him up. After about three or four tries, he finally got a date with her. His persistence paid off. The couple dated for three months and decided they wanted to marry. They exchanged their vows in a small ceremony with family at Mattie’s apartment in East Point. “When we got married, they said it wouldn’t last a month,” says Mattie. “(But) it’s not how long you go with someone, it’s how well you know them.” Mattie was very cautious about bringing a new man into her children’s lives. She was very happy to find that William loved children and her children loved him.
T he couple’s advice:
1 2 3 4
If you feel a big argument starting, turn and walk away. There are two sides to every story, and each person should be allowed to tell his side. But if you have to tell your side, never argue. Never argue in front of the children. Don’t argue with your kids about money. Whatever you can afford, that should be all right with them. Mind your own business and leave other people’s business alone. In other words, everybody’s business is nobody’s business.
When they got married, William and Mattie Conner were told it wouldn’t last a month. After more than 40 years of marriage, they are now in a position to share with others the secrets of a long and happy wedded life.

James and Katie Gay James and Katie share their advice:
1 2 3 4
Put God first, and when you do, everything else will just fall in place. When you go to God with all your problems, He’ll take them and He’ll work them out for you. Stay together. There are going to be ups and downs, but if you stay together there’ll be more good times than bad. “When it gets too thick, don’t thin out,” says James. Talk things over. Don’t just hold it within yourselves. Talk about things before you get married, so when you do get married, things won’t be so difficult. In raising your children, don’t ever say ‘Oh, when your dad comes home,’ or vice versa. You should each raise and teach your children and support each other’s decisions.

When you’re in Turin, it’s hard to tell which decade of the modern age you are passing through — and just maybe that’s part of its charm. “It’s a small town where everybody helps look after everybody else,” says Mayor Allen Smith. Turin, which began as the town of Preston in 1827, is rich in history. Slow down while passing through and you’ll find that Turin is on the move. The town is growing, and its leaders are making positive changes to lay the foundation for the future. Turin is one of two cities in Coweta County that supplies its own water. The town — which in 2000 had a population of 230, now believed to be approximately 270 — supplies water to Sharpsburg, says former mayor Harry P. Van Gorden. That income keeps the town running while Turin’s cut of the county’s Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax keeps the water system running.

The town hall will soon move from the Turin Community Center into the Walter B. Hill School next door to China Grove Baptist Church. This “Rosenwald School” was built in 1920 as part of the Rosenwald rural school building program, an effort to improve the quality of public education for African-Americans in the early 20th-century South. This school served the black community in East Coweta until Eastside was built in 1952 and the county took over management of local schools. From 1957 to 1969 the building served as the volunteer fire station, and one wall was removed to make room for the fire engine, according to Smith. When the county fire department opened station 3, the building fell into disrepair. The restoration project began in 2004 and is still going strong. When the renovation began, “The only thing keeping the school building up then was the termites were holding hands,” says Van Gorden. Once completed, an area inside the school will serve as a black history museum, and Van Gorden anticipates visitors will be able to read accounts of those who attended the school. Former students have been asked for pictures and to document their experiences, and the museum hopes to offer video interviews of students for visitors to watch and check out on DVD.

The contractor kept what could be saved of the original structure so two sides have original siding, and the traditional paint scheme will be used. There will be computers for Internet and museum research available to the public. “This is something that will really be of historic value to Turin,” said Van Gorden.
The railroad is the reason Turin is where it is. Preston was located approximately one mile south of Turin’s present location, and when progress came their way the residents moved the town to accommodate it. In 1889 the residents submitted the name “Preston” in seeking approval from the state legislature to incorporate, but the town of Preston,
near Plains, submitted its application a month ahead. Undeterred, community leaders asked school children what the name of the town should be. A lot of the laborers were of Italian descent and had heard a presentation on the shroud of Turin (the cape that covered Christ’s body), or so Smith’s version of the legend goes.

In 1890 the name was approved. In the 1920s and teens, Turin was a center for cotton. When the banks went bust Senoia took off and grew because their bank didn’t close. For outsiders Turin’s main draw may be the annual tractor parade, but the beauty of the town, according to Van Gorden, is that the town’s representatives are not governing by agenda. “They are actually looking at what is best for the town and the residents,” Van Gorden said. “That’s the most important thing that a lot of politicians seem to forget. They don’t know most of the people. In Turin, that’s not a problem.” Someday, says Van Gorden, the city might be forced to collect property taxes, which is not something that is done now. “With expansion comes responsibility,” he says. History is not something that happens only to famous people in faraway places. Historic events — the ones we study in school — impact places like Turin and people like Nathan Young Hunter. The war in Iraq has been much on my mind. Coweta County has already lost two young men to the current war. The
Nathan Hunter, above at left, survived the Civil War but remained tormented by it. His first wife, Cecelia, married him while still a teenager. Joshua Skinner, at left, reads the simple inscription on the tomb of Hunter, his great-great-greatgrandfather, at Tranquil Cemetery.

soldier of today is the parent of tomorrow, later a grandparent and, eventually, a great-great-grandparent a yellowed photograph, a name neatly written in a Bible, a character in stories passed down. Nathan Hunter was my greatgreat-grandfather. He was one of seven men in my family tree to serve in the Confederate Army. As far as I can tell, the others returned and picked up the pieces of their lives. For Nathan Hunter, however, life after the war was never the same. The hell of it, the death, the hunger, something changed him. The Hunters are inveterate storytellers. My grandmother, Carney Hunter Trammell, and her sisters, Ophelia and Hettie Hunter, talked family history when they got together. I was very close to my grandmother and was often along on those trips - the proverbial “fly on the wall” as stories about lives past unfolded. There were lots of stories about Nathan Hunter. He was bad to drink, they said. He could be mean sometimes. It all went back somehow to the war. Nathan Hunter’s parents, John and Abigail Johnson Hunter, came to Coweta from South Carolina. Although I can’t document it, I suspect they were members at Tranquil Methodist Church near the town of Preston, which later became Turin. They are buried in Tranquil Cemetery just outside town. The church changed with the times, moved to town and continues as Turin United Methodist Church Nathan Hunter married Cecelia Carolyn Benton before he became a soldier. She, too, came from a pioneer Coweta family. They had several children, including my greatgrandfather, R. T. “Dick” Hunter Sr. Cecelia died young. There was a
stepmother, Lula Kelly from Columbus, but she also died. She was always remembered in my aunts’ stories for protecting Nathan Hunter’s children from him when things got out of hand. Lula also died, and Nathan Hunter married a third time to Adelaide Thurmond Uquhart, a doctor’s widow. Their marriage was stormy and brief, ending in divorce. Aunt Hettie never blamed “Miss Adelaide,” feeling the woman had taken more than anyone should have. Cousin Luesta Dunn was not as charitable, painting Adelaide as a cold, high-toned prude. At one point, Nathan’s younger children lived in “a little house in the yard” of his older son, John, in Turin. I can remember Granny pointing out the spot. After his marrying days were over, Nathan Hunter’s life seems to have calmed a bit. He doted on his daughter-in-law, Jennie, who saw a strange man ride up on a horse in her yard one day, only to learn that her tipsy father-in-law had gotten his hair and beard died jet black. There also was a story about the Hunter men enjoying a little nip while seining for fish. Nathan castigated his sons for their behavior, but one of them replied, “Pa, this is just like you used to do.” He bowed his head and said, “You should’a shot me.” These stories were told lightly, always with a playful touch of Hunter humor. There also, however, was some pathos mixed in stories of children living in their brother’s yard, their mother dead, their father loved and loving but tortured by experiences he could not forget. There was no major Civil War battle at Turin. Still, “the war” was much more than a chapter in a book, because lives there for years to come were shaped by it. NCM

Hills&Dales A L AGRANGE LOVE STORYEstate By Jackie Kennedy, Photos by W. Winston Skinner
“You know how I have ever loved beautiful plants and flowers. ...

T
The story of Hills & Dales Estate in LaGrange is a love story – the true tale of four women and the love they shared for one grand garden. The estate, which remained a private homeplace for 166 years, is now open to the public. Located at 1916 Hills and Dales Dr. near downtown LaGrange, its 35 acres feature formal boxwood gardens and a grand Italian villa atop the property’s highest point. sweet fragrance of magnolias, wisteria and roses. Feel the warm breeze as it caresses the ancient boxwood. See the deep faith displayed by the gardener who paid tribute to her Lord in her plantings. Get a taste of homegrown history as you learn of the ladies’ love of plants and dedication to their garden. And hear the chirps of robins and their feathered friends who make this mix of sunny hills and shady dales their home. Thus the name: Hills & Dales. Ida Cason Callaway named the estate
almost a century ago. “If anyone asks us why we named it Hills & Dales, we take them on an automobile ride through the farm, over sunny hills and shady dales.” Prior to that, the boxwood garden was known as Ferrell Gardens. The story begins in 1832, when Nancy Ferrell first planted her formal garden amidst cotton fields. In 1841, her daughter, Sarah, took over the garden and cultivated her mother’s creation for the next 62 years. She converted former cotton MARCH/APRIL

fields into six terraces with stone walkways and brick retaining walls and planted numerous boxwood, several shaped to form words, such as “GOD” and “GOD IS LOVE,” to symbolize her deep faith. “You know how I have ever loved beautiful plants and flowers,” Sarah Ferrell is quoted. “I do not say they were parts of my life – they were life itself.” After Sarah’s death in 1903, the gardens slowly declined, until 1911 when LaGrange textile magnate Fuller E. Callaway Sr. purchased the estate. “He had grown up playing in the boxwood gardens,” says Bill Black, special projects assistant for Hills & Dales. “He walked with Sarah Ferrell through these gardens and they talked about the plantings. She reportedly even suggested that he one day buy the property.” Spring is a beautiful time of year to visit the gardens at historic Hills and Dales Estate in LaGrange.

Fuller’s wife, Ida, an avid gardener, welcomed the opportunity to care for the pristine estate. Here in the garden that Fuller Sr. admired as a child, the couple built their home, on the same spot where the home of Sarah and Judge Blount Ferrell originally stood. Renowned architects Neel Reid and Hal Hentz designed the Italian-style villa to complement the historic gardens. In 1916, Fuller and Ida moved into their new home in celebration of their 25th wedding anniversary. The housewarming/anniversary gala was the event of the season

The 13,000-square-foot abode features classical architectural elements such as ionic engaged columns and a Roman temple-style portico and has been heralded as one of Neel Reid’s greatest lifetime achievements. Yet it was the surrounding gardens the women of this estate considered their great achievement. Just as Sarah Ferrell took her role as garden keeper seriously, so did Ida Callaway. “My heart is so full of the love of flowers, ‘God’s smile on the earth,’ and of interest in everything that grows,” she said in 1920. Ida passed her love for gardening down to both her sons and their wives. Older son Cason eventually opened nearby Callaway Gardens with his wife, Virginia, while Fuller Jr. oversaw operations of the LaGrange mills his father had founded. Upon Ida’s death in 1936, Fuller Jr.’s wife, Alice, became the garden’s caretaker. For the next 62 years — the same number of years Sarah Ferrell tended the garden — Alice Callaway lovingly cared for the local treasure. While Sarah Ferrell and Ida Callaway were both gardeners when they arrived here, Alice “became a

Initially overwhelmed at the task of tending to Hills & Dales, she eventually became comfortable with her calling. “I was a novice,” she once said. “But to me, it was never work.” Alice Callaway was in her garden just two days before her death in 1998. To honor the wishes of Alice and Fuller Callaway Jr., the family home opened to the public in October 2004. ANTIQUES & COLLECTING
A Striking Collection
Martha Bridges of Newnan recently shared with us this unusual collection of vintage matchbooks from local businesses. The matchbooks actually belonged to a relative of her husband Robert and were found well-preserved in a trunk. “We just got them last summer,” Mrs. Bridges said. If you’re like us, you’ll enjoy seeing how many of these businesses you remember — and which ones are still with us today.

The Bookshelf “Done Gone Wrong” By Cathy Pickens St. Martin’s, $23.95 Reviewed by Holly Jones Literary detectives are often too good to be true: Miss Marple, Hercule Poirot, Nancy Drew, the Hardy Boys, even television detectives like Jessica Fletcher, Matlock or Remington Steele. They have perfect hair (or mustaches), perfect jobs, perfect homes, perfect cars, even perfect accents. And they have the genius to solve the perfect crime. Disgusting, isn’t it? Makes you want to dislike detectives, or at least crime solvers. But not anymore. With Avery Andrews, Cathy Pickens has created a sleuth with her feet on the ground — or stuck in the mud. Avery is a lawyer from the small, South Carolina town of Dacus. She has a meddling mother, an indulgent father, and an entire town that wants to tell her how and where to live her life. She is prone to migraines and hypoglycemia, and you don’t want to mess with her if she hasn’t had coffee, food or sleep. In “Done Gone Wrong,” Pickens’ latest book, Avery has returned to Charleston, where she once worked, to help a friend with a case. The case involves a pharmaceutical company and their supposed “miracle drug” to cure depression. A man taking the drug went on a shooting spree in the factory where he worked before killing himself. The victims’ families want their lawyer Jake Baker and Avery to help prove that the drug caused the man’s violence and his suicide. Avery’s primary job in the case is to observe — to sit, watch and give her opinion of how things are going. The giv90

ing-her-opinion part of the plan is working, but the sitting and watching, well, not so much. Before Avery knows it, the guy she thought had stood her up for a dinner meeting is dead in a car crash that was supposed to look like an accident. A single mother who could be a potential witness against the pharmaceutical company is missing. And Avery has been drugged, run off the road herself, left for dead by two men who were supposed to kill her, and held at gunpoint. “Done Gone Wrong” isn’t a terrifying thriller, but it is a fun, quirky mystery with book and street smarts. Its main character has quite a few problems, which make her less than perfect. But in this case, and this book, that is definitely a good thing.
“If You Want Me to Stay: A Novel” By Michael Parker Algonquin Books, $19.95 Reviewed by Holly Jones A coming-of-age story is defined as “a type of novel where the protagonist is initiated into adulthood through knowledge, experience, or both, often by a process of disillusionment.” A better definition may be found in Michael Parker’s heartwrenching novel “If You Want Me to Stay.” Joel Dunn Jr. is a 14-year-old boy trapped by love and music, because poor Joel believes that love means leaving. Joel’s mother and older sister both abandon Joel and his younger brothers, Carter and Tank. The boys live with their father, who leaves in a different way while following the songs in his head. Teddy Pendergrass, Stevie Wonder, Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye - music fuels Joel Sr.’s life as well as his madness. Joel loves his father and his brothers, he even loves his father’s music. But deep down he believes himself a failure at love, because he has never been able to leave his family like his mother and sister have. He does, however, think of himself as a mature adult, feeding and clothing his brothers and trying to keep his father safe, sane and with a positive song in his head. But Joel misses his mother, and frequently holds conversations with her in his own mind — conversations where his
mother invites him to come and stay with her. Joel’s ability to love and leave are tested when Joel’s dad takes a pair of scissors to Carter and starts shoving unpeeled bananas down his throat. So with his dad’s truck, which he can barely drive, and his baby brother Tank in tow, Joel goes in search of his mother. There are heartbreaking moments in this book that let the reader know Joel is only 14, and not as mature as he thinks he is. Moments like when he convinces himself that his mother has died in a house fire, so he doesn’t have to face the fact that she doesn’t care about her sons. Then you see him trying to protect Tank from not only their father’s sickness but also their mother’s rejection, and Joel seems older than his 14 years. By the end of his two-day journey, Joel is disillusioned and goes through a painful initiation, but he does experience love and learns that he is not the failure he thinks he is. And perhaps unfortunately for Joel, though fortunate for Michael Parker’s readers, this sad boy-hero does come of age.
“The Osceola Community Club” By Darlene Eaton Cumberland House, $20.95 Reviewed by Angela Webster It’s easy to imagine the scene: Cassandra Burquette joins a tour group of middle-aged ladies and finds herself whiling away a few hours in Osceola, Fla., the small town where she spent her girlhood summers. Browsing in a used-book store, she comes across a 1958 fundraising cookbook published by the local women’s club. Purchasing it, she heads to a nearby “snobbish Yankee-owned tearoom” where she orders a cup of tea and settles in with the cookbook. In the book’s names, recipes and advertisements, Cassandra traces memories of the summer of 1958 and of the small town that has changed dramatically since she was a regular visitor

back in the fifties. “The Osceola Community Club” is the name of both the women’s group and of the novel, written by Darlene H. Eaton of Jacksonville, Fla. The book is designed so that pages of the cookbook appear in their original, typewriter-generated format. Christmas Ham in a Blanket is the first dish, but the real “dish” can be found in the author’s descriptions of the various recipes’ contributors. Ham in a Blanket contributor is women’s club president Jerrianna Bransford Markham. Eaton writes, “A haughty woman of thirty-six years whose chicken-plucked eyebrows were frozen in a perpetual scowl, Jerrianna was the wife of John Crawford Markham, owner of Osceola’s only industry — a sawmill located near Lake Larson. Puny as a drawingher-last-breath consumptive, yet on the move every second, Jerrianna was a jittery self-important woman whose place in Lemmon County society — second place, lagging far behind Caroline Delamere — brought her continual frustration.” Fund-raising cookbooks themselves can speak volumes about a community, and Osceola’s is no different. Frances Mosley’s Garden Club Cake recipe tells you about the civic life of this woman, but Rebecca Dunn’s Squirrel Pilau recipe conveys quite another message. And while the Squirrel Pilau may not be a hit with modern-day readers, fans of oldfashioned desserts are likely to enjoy at least reading the recipes for Stained Glass Cake, Scripture Cake and Tomato Soup Cake. The recipes are cleverly woven into the book’s plot, which centers around those long-ago summers Cassandra spent at the home of her Nanny Ellie. The young girl’s innocence displayed alongside the grown-up woman’s recollections will make these stories resonate with those who grew up in small southern towns and appreciate the nostalgic look back.

Around the world with the
“Lee Boys” By Bob Lee
T
he “Lee Boys,” the sons of Dock and Bloise Lee, lived at 1090 Posey Rd. but moved there before the road had a name or electricity. Dock Lee Sr. came from Lavonia, Ga. and Bloise Stamps Lee grew up on Happy Valley Circle. Bloise’s parents and grandparents lived on Happy Valley Circle also. Her grandparents James Stamps (1795-1873) and Elizabeth Freeman (1815-1922) are buried in the George Smith Family Cemetery on Happy Valley Circle. Dock and Bloise were married in Newnan but lived the first six years of their marriage in Lavonia. In 1918 they decided to move to Newnan. They rented a freight car and put the animals and farm equipment in one end of the car and three children and themselves in the other end. When they arrived in Newnan they removed the wagon and the mules from the freight car and transported their household and farm equipment to Posey Road. The third son, Robert Elgin, was born shortly thereafter on Posey Road Sept. 15, 1918. In 1928 the family built a home from the trees harvested on their farm. The house still stands today. The family operated a dairy farm from this location for many years. All the Lee children went to a three-room grammar school in Madras. The “Lee Boys” drove the first school bus in Coweta County.
Dock, Jim and Bob Lee on Posey Road
Dock Lee Sr. made an agreement with Marvin Starr, school superintendent, to drive a covered wagon with side seats from their home on Posey Road to McCollum and back to the Madras School. The Lees furnished the wagon, mule and driver and received one dollar a day for the service. Dock Lee Jr. went to Newnan High School and two years at Bowden State College. He joined the Marines and remained there for eight years. James “Jim” Lee went to Starr High School in Turin and later went to work for the government. Robert “Bob” Lee also went to Starr High School. After graduation he and Jim drove a 10-cent taxi in Newnan. They would pick up and drop off customers anywhere in the city limits of Newnan for 10 cents. One day, Bob had a fare to Columbus, Ga. The gentleman wanted to be dropped off at the post office in Columbus. When Bob and his passenger arrived at the post office there was a large sign that read, “Join the Navy and See the World.” Bob parked the cab and went in and signed up for the Navy. That
January of 1937 he went to Norfolk, Va. for basic training. After Dock left the Marines he joined Pan American Airways. Shortly after that Bob left the Navy and joined Pam Am as well. Middle brother Jim joined Dock and Bob in 1943 at Pan Am. All three brothers flew with Pan Am as flight engineers on the Boeing B314 Flying Boats, Navy PB2Y3R Flying Boat, L-49 Constellation, Douglas DC 4 and the Boeing 377 Strata Cruiser. When the jet age began Pan Am trained the brothers as pilots. They flew on the DC8, Boeing 707 and Boeing 747. Dock was on the first commercial flight that flew into Russia. Bob says, “After four years in the Navy and 39 years with Pan Am, there was not much of the world that I did not see.” Dock retired after 33 years with Pan Am and now lives in Tacoma, Wash. He is 92 years young. Jim retired after 33 years and now lives in Tavares, Fla. He is 89 years young. Bob retired after 39 years and has lived on the Lee Family farm on Posey Road for 35 years. He is 87 years young. NCM
