the poster he Decatur Arts Festival commissioned this year’s poster artwork from Micah Mullen, a painter based in Raleigh, NC. Micah’s paintings focus on landscapes both urban and wild, built and natural, each view energized with his signature patterns that dance through sky, treetops, waterfalls, and building facades. Micah’s booth at the Artists Market in 2015 generated some buzz within the local arts community. “We’re such big fans of Micah’s work, and we wanted to see what he could do with Decatur’s Community Lantern Parade as a subject,” says Angie Macon, executive director of the Decatur Arts Alliance. “We could not be more delighted with the outcome and the way he captured the energy and excitement of this magical event that means so much to our Decatur family.” Micah holds a bachelor’s degree from SUNY Brockport and a master’s degree from Duquesne University. The Micah Mullen son of a college art professor, Micah came into his own as an artist after working for an art supply company where he became the marketing director. “Between time spent in my father’s studio and my professional career I learned countless things about art theories, techniques, principles and practices,” says Micah. My never-ending passion is to put these ideas onto canvas.” Micah can be found at the festival this year at booth 38. Be sure to stop by and say hello. Visit micahmullen.com to find out more.

and storyteller, Brent Walker. Through stunning portraiture and intimate conversations, Brent takes the reader on a journey across the Southeast United States, uncovering stories of heartbreak, addiction, and hope. The book features more than 100 stories and portraits of people from all walks of life juxtaposed with photos of the Southern landscape that help paint a rich and complex picture of The Hidden South.

Mark Zwonitzer discusses his latest work: a dual biography covering the last ten years of the lives of friends and contemporaries, writer Mark Twain and statesman John Hay. The Statesman and The Storyteller provides not only an intimate look into the daily lives of these men, but also an elucidating portrait of the United States on the verge of emerging as a world power. With the compelling pace of a novel and epic sweep of historical writing, Zwonitzer captures the humanity and nuance of Hay and Twain in this masterful biography.

Parker Owen is an Atlanta native and self-taught artist who has been painting for more than 30 years. His paintings are usually acrylic and of figurative subject matter. He has also done illustrative work for zines such as Glitter Snipe out of New York. A former teacher and currently a librarian, he exercises his artistic side primarily on weekends and holidays. They’ve since shared the stage with the likes of the Allman Brothers, Gov’t Mule, and Robert Cray. A.J. and his high energy band blend the spirit of funk, gospel, and blues into a dynamic sound that is pure modern rock and roll. Don’t miss this show. ajghentband.com

InterPlay: Movement, Storytelling, Voice, and Community Connection! Sunday, May 29, 1-1:45 pm

Awareness Through Movement Saturday, May 28, 10-11 am A one-hour class in the Feldenkrais Method, with Louise Runyon. Ingenious, gentle movement sequences designed to bring mobility, ease, and efficiency to all forms of physical activity, through heightened awareness of how the body and mind can function together as an integrated whole. “The Feldenkrais Method is the most sophisticated and effective method I have seen for the prevention and reversal of deterioration of function,” says anthropologist Margaret Mead, Ph.D. Note: Participants will need to bring mats.

Belly Dance Basics: The Moves Everyone Should Know with Heidi Baila Saturday, May 28, 11:30 am-12:30 pm These fun and timeless moves require no previous dance training or targeted muscular control. They are the basics that bring a smile to dancers faces and make them feel a bit nostalgic. Following a relaxing warm up each move will be broken down, with variations and modifications provided for all levels. We’ll put them all together to create a fun combo and end with a cool down.

InterPlay is an art form that anyone can do! The simple forms of InterPlay invite participants of all ages and abilities to free the stories, movement, and voice within. InterPlay is taught in an incremental and affirming environment where the unique creative expression of each individual is honored and celebrated. InterPlay invites creativity and connection (with oneself and others) in a joyful and accessible atmosphere. Come play! interplay.org

Creative Movement with Nadya Zeitlin Sunday, May 29, 2-2:45 pm Creative Movement is a mix of dance improvisation and dance theater. The main topic of the class: How to make a dance phrase using common gestures? A warm-up period is designed to tune participants to the creative process and “break the ice.” We will work with types of dance moves and common gestures through a creative group process.

Life in Full Bloom, with The Dancing Flowers for Peace Saturday, May 28, 1-2 pm The Dancing Flowers for Peace invite you to “dig” into your creativity and discover your “full bloom” through improvisational play. We will create possibilities for our bodies to express and extend into fullness. What is our impact? What parts of our bodies will open?

Modern Lyrical Dance Class with Alex Spitzer Saturday, May 28, 2:30-3:30 pm This dance class is based on adaptation and evolution. Students will be encouraged to mimic the instructor’s movement, and to then develop additional movements as well, and to continue to build on them. By the end of the class, students will all be completing the same floor patterns, but

Travis Jones regularly performs stand-up at the Laughing Skull Lounge and the Improv in Atlanta, and has had the pleasure of working with Greg Proops, Dana Gould and other greats. He is in the sketch group Church Socks and recently performed in NYC Sketch Fest. Travis has also been a part of the Red Clay Comedy Festival, the Black Box Comedy Festival, and the SponCom Festival. He has been described as the Pixies of comedy, and his Mom thinks he is very funny.

Join us for a new take on an old classic “15 Minutes of Fame!”

Mo Arora | 3-3:15 pm

Saturday, May 28 The Improv Initiative 1-1:45 pm Decatur High School’s Improv Initiative aims to provide an opportunity to develop students’ interests in comedy and improv. All performances are completely improvised based on audience suggestions.

Zimu Yang 2-2:15 pm Zimu was born to a pair of monks, the fruit of an illegal love affair forbidden by the Khmer regime. At risk of execution

Mo’s conversational style of comedy manages to be both observational and personal, and comes from a unique perspective – that is, unless you know a lot of brown-skinned

Canadians living in the South. Mo Arora began performing standup comedy in Montreal and is now based in Atlanta. He is a regular at the Laughing Skull Lounge, was the house emcee at the Atlanta Improv, and now co-hosts the Schlitz and Giggles standup comedy showcase. He has performed at the Cape Fear, Orlando Indie, Scruffy City (Knoxville), and Memphis comedy festivals, and regularly tours the US and Canada on his own and with the #WorkingRemotelyTour.

Olivia Cathcart | 3:30-3:45 pm Olivia’s comedy has often been described as smart and clever, and she once was told, “I thought you’d be terrible, but that was funny” by one guy who doesn’t know how to give a compliment. He’s dead now (cholesterol). She has opened for the Professor Blastoff podcast with Tig Notaro, Kyle Dunnigan, and David Huntsberger. She has performed at the Crom Comedy Festival in Omaha, NE, Hell Yes Fest, Red Clay, Derby City, and the Memphis Comedy Festival. She also bats a respectable .345 in wiffleball.

Damon Sumner | 4-4:15 PM Since starting standup in Atlanta in 2010, Damon has shared the stage with numerous headliners, nationally and internationally, like Todd Glass, Iliza Shlesinger, Duncan Trussell, Jarrod Harris, Butch Bradley, Dez Bishop, and Wali Collins. Damon has performed overseas and even helped open the first

Plug Chapman | 4:30-4:45 pm A native of East Point, Georgia, Kareem Chapman, aka Plug Chapman is a natural born comedian, writer, and actor, with a knack for revealing the funny like a flashlight in the dark. In addition to opening up for headliners like Jon Lovitz, Jodi Miller, and Chris Delia, he

is a hit with audiences from east to west coasts, performing in venues such as the Comedy Store, the Laugh Factory, and John Lovitz Comedy Club just to name a few. Plug is also a touring comic and was selected to appear on Funny is Funny produced by Kevin Hart and scheduled to air this summer.

bike valet

Ride your bike to the festival!

Hop on your bike, ride it to the festival, and park it in the bike valet area at North McDonough Street at the square. It’s free! A valet attendant remains on duty throughout the event to park and monitor bikes. When you arrive, look for signs to direct you to the bike valet area. Then enjoy the festival knowing that your bike will remain secure. The bike valet service is sponsored by Bicycle South and the City of Decatur. The Decatur Arts Festival works with the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition to provide the service. We hope to reduce the event’s impact on traffic congestion and carbon emissions by supporting bicycle transportation.

id high, bid often at the two-day Silent Auction! Rarely does spending money freely, without guilt go hand-in-hand with a social conscience, but the Decatur Arts Festival Silent Auction provides the opportunity to do exactly that! You get to bid wildly, spend, and win while helping the arts to thrive. And you get to take home a fabulous piece of art, donated by a participating festival artist. So be sure to stop by the Old Courthouse lawn and check out this year’s incredible art items. All bidders must sign up for a bid number to bid. It’s easy! Just stop by the Silent Auction tent and we’ll sign you up. Bidders without numbers will have their bids canceled.

Winning bidders may pick up their items between 4 and 6 pm on Sunday, or at the Decatur Arts Alliance/Visitors Center at 113 Clairemont Ave. during the week of May 31-June 3. Any item not picked up by June 3 will go to the second highest bidder. Every year the Silent Auction raises thousands of dollars that help the Decatur Arts Alliance bring free arts events to the city of Decatur, making art accessible and fun for all. Your winning bid during the Silent Auction helps to keep the arts alive in Decatur and makes you a superhero in our eyes. Put your money where your heart is and bid high! dekalb history center exhibits Open Daily: Monday-Friday, 10 am-4pm Saturday, May 28, 10 am-5 pm | Sunday, May 29, Noon-4 pm Old Courthouse on the Square | Main Floor The DeKalb History Center has four exhibits on the main floor of the historic Old DeKalb County Courthouse.

Decorative Arts from the Permanent Collection This new exhibit features a sampling of pieces from the DeKalb History Center’s holdings, acquired over the nearly 70 years since the organization was established. The emphasis is on antique furniture, with some items previously owned by prominent DeKalb County citizens such as author Caroline McKinney Clarke, Judge Charles Whitefoord Smith, and Bishop Warren Akin Candler. Most objects date from the early 19th century to the early 20th century.

Tears and Curses: A Human Focus on the Civil War This exhibit presents an intimate opportunity to view a small portion of our Civil War collection and consider the impact of the war on a local scale. We present artifacts with personal meaning to help you feel the point of view of an individual. The title is from a letter in our collection written by Private Dewitt C. Morgan to a woman who may have been a sweetheart. Angry at the Union forces, he wrote, “They sow tears and curses – they shall reap infamy and overthrow.”

The Mid-Century Ranch House: Hip and Historic! The ranch house has reached the age (50 years or older) which makes it eligible for the National Register. Citizens of DeKalb

County see many examples of the ranch house around them. They are so common it is almost easy to disregard the patterns of history these houses illustrate. Visitors to this exhibit will learn why this house type was so popular and the reason DeKalb County was the epicenter of this mid-century construction boom. There are a number of variations found in the ranch house, but here you will learn their major characteristics. We have already heard reports from people who now “see them everywhere!” And if you think you already know everything about the ranch house because you grew up in one, we might have few surprises for you!

44 | Decatur Arts Alliance | decaturartsalliance.org

Highlights from the Guy Hayes Collection: Food, Fun & Fashion in the Modern Era This exhibit represents a small selection of black and white photographs from the Hayes collection and provides a unique view of food trends, clothing styles and recreational diversions of the 1950s and 1960s. He was a regular contributor to The Atlanta Journal, The Atlanta Constitution and The DeKalb News/Sun. Hayes’ work included current events or staged shoots to illustrate stories as requested by these newspapers. This resulted in a lack of diversity of the Georgians represented during these decades. As Georgia was segregated in its public arenas, so too were its newspapers and their readers.
