Sleeping Positions to Improve Health Sleep is essential in keeping a healthy mind and body. On average, a person needs eight hours of sleep to be able to function properly. Insufficient sleep and other sleeping problems worsen illnesses and lead to mental weakening. Problems in sleeping usually arise from health issues, but may be improved through certain sleeping positions. Here are a few examples:

Supine Position

Lying on back with arms at side is one of the best sleeping positions, especially with a few pillows. This helps improve spine and neck due to the support of the mattress. Its variation, the starfish or sleeping with outstretched arms, has the same benefits. It also helps prevent break-outs and wrinkles.

Prone Position

For some people, sleeping facedown or on their stomach can be an uncomfortable position. On the other hand, it facilitates digestion and reduces acid reflux. It also decreases cases of snoring. For people with herniated disk and degenerative disk disease, sleeping in this position may alleviate the pain.

Fetal Position

Medical practitioners generally do not suggest sleeping curled up in a ball, but it is particularly beneficial for pregnant women. By sleeping on their left side, this position can help regulate blood flow and the circulation of the fetus. This position controls deep breathing, and therefore help people with snoring problems. Apart from this, sleeping in a fetal position relieves osteoarthritis and spinal stenosis.

Log Position

Characterized by lying on the side with limbs parallel to the body, the log position is another position that reduces neck and back pain. This position also helps people with sleep apnea, bursitis, acid reflux, and snoring. A variation of this position, the yearner or sleeping with arms out, has the same benefits. The downside of this position though, is the additional stress on the shoulders and hips. All sleeping positions can put pressure on body parts that support the weight of the body. Using the right pillows and mattresses, especially memory foam types, can reduce these problems. The body needs sleep to rest and repair its systems. Sleep facilitates the regeneration and recovery of cells and organs from daily stress and tension. With the help of the right sleeping positions, the body can also recuperate from illnesses and other health conditions.
