£1.4m 3G multi-sport facility for Melvin progressing well

Work on the new £1.4m multi-sport 3G facility at Melvin in Strabane is progressing well with works expected to be completed by early 2018, Derry City and Strabane District Council has revealed this week. Council has committed £1.4m towards replacing the existing sand synthetic pitch and grass football pitch with a new multisport surface that will primarily cater for football, rugby and Gaelic sport in the Strabane area. While some minor operational issues have caused some minor delays to the works programme and it is expected to be completed early this year.

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Cllr Maolíosa McHugh explained that the project has been in the planning for a number of years and marks another significant investment by Council on sports and recreational facilities in the city and district.

4

He explained: “This was historically a legacy Strabane Council project, however is now being developed by Derry City and Strabane District at a cost of approximately £1,413,200.00 made up of £590,200 of external funding secured from the Department for Communities’ Neighbourhood Renewal Investment Fund and £823,000 from Council. Community groups representing the residents of the Strabane Neighbourhood Renewal area have welcomed the progression of this project and are already planning a programme of activities to be run at the new facilities which will result in increased participation and health for all. The project represents a further commitment by the Council to provide state of the art sports and recreational facilities for local clubs and the

wider community and we are confident that when completed, the new 3G pitch provision will promote Melvin Sports Complex as a hub for sporting activities, encouraging healthier and more active lifestyles for users. “This is a hugely important project for Strabane, that will not only address the issue of pitch provision in the area, but also allows to achieve our objectives to encourage increased participation in sports and allow us to develop a facility that can be used all year round for training and competitive games. It can also be used to promote and develop social and partnership engagement between the various sports clubs and cross community interaction.” Karen McFarland, Director for Health and Communities at Derry City and Strabane District Council added: “This project follows on from £2.2 million of investment in 2014 of major refurbishment works at Melvin Sports Complex and this additional investment will complement the current facilities that include a Sports Hall, Studios, Conference Rooms, Cryospa, Soft Play Park, MUGA, tennis court, and Running track. The investment is also in addition to over £60,000 to upgrade the Arena Grass Pitch and Changing provision at Melvin Sports Complex that now meets the criteria for intermediate standard football.” Kevin Doherty, Irish Football Association, Grassroots Development Officer says the new developments at Melvin will be an excellent resource for soccer clubs. “All clubs in the region are reporting an increase in membership especially amongst their youth ranks and facilities such as the development of the Multi Sports 3G at Melvin Sports Complex are essential to meet the increased training and match day needs. The

IFA have been aware of the potential for this project since 2014 and congratulate those involved in bringing it to fruition. It will be an excellent addition and in line with the IFA’s ‘let them play’ strategy it will provided an opportunity for more people to be more active more often.” While Michael Cooke from Sports NI said that the addition of 3G facilities at Melvin was great news for local soccer, rugby and Gaelic sports clubs and will go some way to addressing the shortfall identified in Sport Northern Ireland’s Bridging the Gap report. He says: “This investment will provide a great venue for a multi-sport hub and the provision of new diverse multi-sport facilities for young people to get a better all-round sport experience.” From a GAA perspective, Stephen McGeehan from the UIster Council said that Ulster GAA are delighted such a facility will be available in North Tyrone. The new pitch will be used by the Province, County and local clubs as well as schools and colleges across the nine counties while the Ulster GAA will use it for its inter county and inter club matches in football and hurling while it will be utilised for coach development, referee education courses and fitness testing. “The specifications of the pitch make it accessible for all our competitive games up to senior inter-county level. Our clubs in North Tyrone and in the neighbouring counties of Donegal and Derry will see the development as an important additional resource for their weekly coaching and games development programmes which involves participants from under 6 to senior level and whenever their own facilities are unavailable.”

Work commences on £1.7m Play Provision at Ballymagroarty and Kilfennan Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor Maolíosa McHugh, has expressed his delight that contractor Quinn Automatic Limited is now on site and beginning work on the play park projects in Ballymagroarty and Kilfennan. The exciting developments for the local community are jointly funded by the Social Investment Fund under the NI Executive’s Delivering Social Change framework, and the Council through its Parks Development Programme. The projects, which are worth a combined total of £1.7m, are the result of a collaborative working relationship between Council, the Executive Office, the Caw / Nelson Drive Action Group and Ballymagroarty Community Association. Mayor McHugh welcomed this latest development in the process: “I am delighted and excited for the residents of Ballymagroarty, Kilfennan and the surrounding areas who can now look forward to state of the art play provision on their door step,” he said. “These projects are further evidence of Council’s commitment to provide a high level of accessible play provision for children across the City and District through the Invest in Play programme.

COMMUNITY NEWS

“When completed they will help promote social interaction and physical activity among our young people and offer a hub for families to come together and have fun in the outdoors.”

8

A spokesperson for the Executive Office added: “The Executive Office welcomes this latest progress on the Ballymagroarty and Kilfennan projects which will make a tangible difference to young people’s lives and help build a better, brighter and more prosperous future for them. “This builds on the progress of the Ballyarnett and Brandywell projects which have contractors on site and which together form the Invest in Play project. This project is a good example of the positive changes that are possible when we work closely with

local government and the local community to pool our ideas and resources. “These projects empower local people and provide the entire community with a renewed sense of hope and purpose.” Linda Watson, co-ordinator of the Caw/Nelson Drive Action Group said: “The group are delighted that their years of hard work and close relationship with Council and the Executive Office are now coming to fruition with the commencement of work at Kilfennan. “Children can benefit significantly from playing together, it develops their social skills and helps keep them healthy and now the children in our local area can look forward to those benefits in the near future.” Christy Daniels from the Ballymagroarty Community Association echoed those comments: “There is significant excitement in the Ballmagroarty area to see the start of work on this much anticipated project. “We are an area of high deprivation and lack adequate community facilities so the play park will help fill that void for local families. “The Community Association and other community ground have campaigned for years for this project so it is particularly pleasing for them to see their hopes for the area begin to become a reality.” Noel Mc Cartney, Chair of the local SIF Steering Group, also welcomed the news: “I am delighted that work has formally commenced on the Ballymagroarty and Kilfennan Play Parks. With the Brandywell and Ballyarnett Play Parks nearly finished we are well on our way to completing the Play Element of the local SIF Action Plan. “The Social Investment Fund will bring a total of £9.5m of investment to the most deprived areas of our city and I would like to acknowledge the role the late Martin Mc Guinness played in making this happen.”

but it wasn’t until my family grew up and left home that I decided to give it a serious try. A group of us ladies decided to start up a comedy group. We named ourselves, Stretch Marks Unlimited, and for a number of years we performed our own sketches in theatres and pubs in Derry, Dublin and Donegal. After the group broke up I wrote my first play entitled, Me DA’s Suit. It was an instant hit receiving critical acclaim and broke box office records in the Playhouse, Derry. This was followed by my second play, The Dumped Divorcee Support Group, also a critical and commercial hit. I have been a lecture in drama and great I’ve writing working with adult student.

Influences and inspirations. I remember as a child seeing, The Wizard Of Oz. I thought it was the most wonderful story and to this day, when I have an opportunity to watch it, the magic is still there. Italian actress and Academy Award winner, Anna Magnani is the single most inspirational influence in my life. Watching her performance in, The Rose Tattoo made me want to write.

My career high point and low point. Without a doubt the highpoint of my life was the success of my first play. I knew I could tell a story and one that would make people of all ages laugh. My low point was the failure of my third play. I was very disappointed with myself. But, I learned from that mistake and went on to write a number of successful plays since.

Productions To date I have written, acted in, and directed seven, two act stage play. I have also been commissioned to write many community based plays covering issues such as, mental health, cross community themes, alcohol abuse and bullying among others

COMMUNITY NEWS

My most memorable work.

10

Me DA’s Suit has to be the most memorable for me for a number of reasons. It signalled my arrival in the theatre world. It was based on a true story about my father who was a Taylor. He was a very learned man who loved literature. He would have loved seeing me successful, but unfortunately he died the year before my play was staged.

My new play The Dumped Divorcee Support Group Rides Again, is the second play in a trilogy. Part one was, The Dumped Divorcee Support Group and told the story of life after divorcee for people of a

certain age. It was a great success and people often ask me if I would write a follow up because they so enjoyed the characters on stage. At the end of that play, Maura, Eileen and Rosie Eugene rode off into the sunset with new partners. However, the fairy tail didn’t last and they are back together again, more desperate than ever to find love at any cost. I really enjoyed writing this play. There are new characters in the group plus the usual suspects. Its a very funny story with unforgettable characters.

Future plans I am presently writing part three of, The Dumped Divorcee Support Group, to be staged sometime in the not too far in the future. I have also written three, one act plays as yet unstaged. And a very dark, dramatic play entitled, The Daisy Field, my first piece of straight dramatic writing.

‘PEACE’ On Earth - PEACE IV European funding benefits local communities

COMMUNITY NEWS

The December snow has brought with it a flurry of PEACE IV project launches to local communities. With over £2 million worth of contracts recently awarded to local community groups for crosscommunity reconciliation work, the funding from the Special EU Programmes Body under Derry City and Strabane District Council’s PEACE IV Programme is already beginning to make a positive impact on the ground.

12

“The PEACE IV Board have worked hard to get this key funding distributed locally since we launched the programme in June,” said Board Chair Gearoid Ó hEára. “Most of our 22 headline projects are up and running over the last six months and we’re delighted that across the projects there have already been 14 new jobs created.” Co-Chair, Alderman Drew Thompson, highlighted some of the wide range of projects that have been launched in recent weeks.

“Projects that launched in December include the Beacon Project, managed by Youth Action NI to benefit marginalised young adults; CultureFuse, managed by An Gaelaras in partnership with the NW Cultural Partnership, which links Irish, Ulster Scots and marching band traditions and our Peace Tourism initiative which will unite community and mainstream tourist providers in promoting the City and District around history, heritage and diversity,” he noted. Other projects proving popular are Connecting Communities Through Sport, which offers boxing, soccer, gaelic, hockey, cricket and rugby to interface areas, the ‘Connecting Communities’ Fountain/Bogside project, managed by BBI and the ‘Waterside Shared Village’ activity programme between Top of the Hill and Irish Street and managed by the Waterside Neighbourhood Partnership.

The Nerve Centre managed ‘Decades of Centenaries’ project is also thriving. PEACE IV funded projects already delivering active work on the ground include the ‘Just Us’ train the trainers project for teachers, youth and community workers, managed by Gaslight Media Trust; ‘Liberation From Patriarchy for Gender Justice’ - a community programme linking racism and sectarianism to patriarchy and managed by the Junction and the ‘Valued Voices’ project managed by Towards Understanding and Healing which aims to allow those most impacted by the ‘Troubles’ and those who feel the Peace Process has not yet benefitted them to have their voices heard. To find out more about opportunities to participate in and benefit from these and other PEACE IV projects launching in the new year, sign up for the PEACE IV monthly e-newsletter on www.derrystrabane.com/Peace-IV or contact peace@derrystrabane.com.

The 3G synthetic pitch at Brooke Park will officially reopen to the public this Monday January 15th following the installation of a net roofing solution to prevent balls leaving the play area. The pitch was closed last June on health and safety grounds and speaking this week, Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor Maolíosa McHugh, welcomed the reopening of the facility. “I am pleased to see the conclusion of the upgrade works on the Brooke Park 3G pitch which, given its size, was a significant engineering task,” he said.

“The project is a key part of Council’s sports pitch development programme which includes the extensive refurbishment of Brandywell Stadium and the Melvin Sports Area and can play a key role in promoting healthier choices and encouraging higher levels of participation and proficiency in sport and recreational

activities.” The 3G pitch at Brooke Park can be used for junior games and training sessions and can be partitioned off with netting for smaller groups to use one or two thirds of the play area. For further information on bookings and prices contact Brooke Park Leisure and Sports Centre on 028 71 262637 or by e mailing brookepark@derrystrabane.com. “The pitch has proven popular with the public since it reopened in 2016 with private groups as well as a range of under-age and senior teams from various sports availing of it so it is hugely positive news that they again have access to it and can use it safely.

Final applicants sought for fast track course in hospitality, retail and tourism

Derry City and Strabane District Council are seeking applications for the final intake of their popular preemployment programme that helps prepare local people who are out of work for a career in the hospitality, retail and tourism sectors in just five weeks. The Hospitality and Retail, Tourism Training for Employment course (HARTE) begins on Monday January 29th and is part of Council’s Kickstart to Work programme which will come to an end in March of this year.

COMMUNITY NEWS

The innovative fast track course aims to provide candidates with the qualifications, skills and confidence to successfully apply for jobs in those sectors.

14

The course aims to break down the barriers that unemployed people often face in applying for positions in the local job market by offering them pre-employment training to equip them with the necessary skills to make a successful job application. During the course Kickstart will also offer financial support for expenses such as childcare, travel, subsistence

and uniforms.

future employment.

The course is split into three sections: a vocational training programme at the North West Regional College, an award in employability and a two week work placement before offering candidates a guaranteed interview with local employers.

“Some candidates may not have been part of a training programme for some time and they will find the one to one mentoring that is provided as part of the course particularly helpful. “We aim to breakdown all the barriers that are holding people back from returning to training and employment. “As this is the final intake of the HARTE course before the Kickstart to Work programme finishes at the end of March I would urge anyone who has considered the course in the past to avail of their final opportunity to complete it.”

Mena Kearney, Job Brokerage Officer with Derry City and Strabane District Council, said the course will provide applicants with the necessary qualifications and skills to take up a career in either hospitality, retail or tourism. “This course has proven particularly effective in helping unemployed or economically inactive people in the Council area who are more than capable of pursuing a career in these sectors but who may need some guidance and support to make their aspirations a reality,” she said. “As well as providing industry led accredited training and work experience, help and support candidates will also be offered assistance with job searching, CV preparation and interview skills to enhance their chances of securing

North West Brides Bridal Fair

Photos from the ‘Something Old, Something New Bridal Weekend’ at the Alley Theatre in Strabane – from Sunday 14th January 2018. Following Saturday’s afternoon tea and ‘Living Vintage’ show, the bridal extravaganza continued on Sunday at the North West Brides Bridal Fair. The event had everything under the one roof that brides-to-be would need to plan their big day – including stalls and a fabulous catwalk show. ‘Living Vintage’ displayed their private collection of authentic wedding dresses and mother of the bride outfits with accessories in a fashion show extravaganza as a fundraiser in aid of Queen’s University Cancer Medical Research. The unique bridal show was a fantastic insight into fashion in the 194050’s and included some wedding dresses from the Strabane area from as far back as the 1930’s. Passionately curated by sisters Bridget and Marian, Living Vintage is a notfor-profit organisation which raises monies for good causes. Further images / photos available on request.

Healthy Skin Healthy-looking skin starts from the inside out, and it has so much to do with the food and nutrients you put into your body. A good skin care routine is important for women. Regularly cleansing, ex-foliating and moisturising helps you maintain healthy skin. However, no matter how many skin care products you apply to the outside of your skin, if you aren’t eating healthy food and drinking water to nourish your skin from within, your skin will look dull.

Lemon Start each morning with warm water and lemon on an empty stomach. Not only does it kick start the metabolism it may reduce free radical damage removing them from the body. It is a wonderful source of vitamin C repairing damaged skin cells. Warm water and lemon is a good anti-ageing solution. The sun can be tough on your skin. Vitamin C can help protect you. It also helps undo sun damage to collagen and elastin, which firm up your skin.

Pomegranate The entire fruit is rich in nutrients, including the peel, the white membrane, the fleshy part, and the seeds. Pomegranates are packed with antioxidants which reverse free-radical damage and promote supple, youthful skin. Pomegranates are often hailed as the king of antioxidant-rich fruits, as they contain more antioxidants than most. This gorgeous juicy fruit is delicious sprinkled in salads, porridge, granola or mixed with yoghurt. They also promote supple skin. It possesses anti aging compounds that aid cellular regeneration.

Avocados Packed with nutrients it contains healthy fats, and vitamin B7, biotin and vitamin E. The fatty acids provide the skin with lubrications, giving you that gorgeous glow. Avocados are a great source of antioxidant carotenoids like alpha-carotene, beta carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin, zeaxanthin and lutein. These free radical quenching compounds provide significant protection for your skin from the environmental damage that leads to fine lines, wrinkles and other visible signs of aging. Enjoy a breakfast of wholegrain toast with smashed avocado and a poached egg.

Oily fish Evidence shows that omega 3 helps reduce inflammation and signs of aging in the body. It may help protect and repair the skin from damage from the sun and maintains hydration of cell membranes, benefiting skin keeping it soft and supple. Omega-3s and omega-6s are good fats that help make your skin’s natural oil barrier, keeping away dryness and blemishes. Essential fatty acids like these help leave your skin smooth and supple. You can get them from olive and canola oils, flaxseeds, walnuts, and cold-water fish like salmon, sardines, and mackerel. Eat 2 portions of oily fish a week. Wild salmon is a wonderful source of omega 3. If you don’t eat fish, supplement with a good quality fish oil.

Omega 3 can also be obtained from plants, sprinkle flaxseed, hemp seeds or chia seeds in porridge or salads. Butternut squash and leafy greens are packed with Vitamin A- great for skin as it protects it against UV sun damage and slows the ageing process. Beta carotene and pro-vitamin A carotenoids which are antioxidants. By promoting cell production, vitamin A helps strengthen this barrier, protecting your complexion from harmful irritants that attempt to attack the surface.

Skin Healthy Smoothie Ingredients: 1 cup of milk of your choice ¼ an Avocado 1/2 cup Frozen or fresh Blueberries Handful of Organic Spinach Leaves 1-2 tablespoons of Hemp seeds/ or chia seeds 1/2 teaspoon Spirulina Powder Squeeze of lemon. Blend all of these nutrient-packed ingredients together and enjoy! Your skin will thank you for it!

Skin Healthy Lunch Ingredients 1 grilled fillet of salmon or mackerel Handful of spinach leaves dressed in lemon juice, 1 tbsp of olive, walnut or avocado oil Roasted chopped butternut squash and sweet potato wedges Pumpkin seeds toasted I can be contacted by email at nutrilifeo8@gmail.com or by my business’s Facebook page under ‘Nutrilife Ireland’.

2018 is here!!!!

What an exciting time especially for any beautiful brides getting married this year. We have already welcomed our first bridal party into the salon. And what a great morning we had. There’s nothing more exciting than the morning of a wedding. The anticipation, the nervous excitement. Surprises from husbands/wife’s. Sweet messages from friends. Here our brilliant bridal team take charge and make sure that your wedding hair and makeup are perfect. We welcome you with a champagne breakfast and hopefully help relax and take the stress away. We make sure that our brides leave the salon on time. Making sure they enjoy precious time at home getting ready before they walk up the aisle.

Brides top tips 1. Book a course of facials prior to the big day. This will get your skin in brilliant condition. 2. Build a relationship with your hairdresser/ makeup artist. 3. Book a proper bridal hair and makeup trial about 8 weeks before. 4. Book your colour and cut about two weeks before. Ask your hairdresser for a good treatment to get your hair in amazing shape. 5. JANUARY 2018 | HIGHLIGHT MAGAZINE food that looks close to ‘real’. Get used o reading labels. How many ingredients can you not pronounce? How far up the ingredient list does sugar come? Check where the food has come from? And if you’re stuck - get a group together and book in with me for a friendly Health Talk!

Nutrition has become a culture in today’s society, why do you think it has taken until now to become so widely recognised and appreciated?

Can you tell us a little about your career to date? I have a long history of working with the business community – both in the public sector with Derry City Council, followed by a fabulous 10 years with the Derry Chamber of Commerce, the last few years as their Chief Executive. After losing weight myself, I became interested in food, and the choices we make, and was given the opportunity to join Slimming World as a Consultant and Team Manager. This was my first foray into running my own business and I built it up, over 8 years, to run 4 successful groups, helping 1000’s of members to achieve their weight loss goals. I can honestly say that was an incredibly inspiring experience. To lose weight, either 1 stone or 10 stone, means you are taking your life back into your own hands and understanding YOU have complete control. I’ll never forget the day I gave a member her 15-stone award. It was a privilege to be a part of their journeys.

Where did your influences and inspirations come from which lead to towards this field? The inspiration came from those members, but also from the growing realisation that there was more to this food choice malarkey than good carbs/bad carbs and low fat/no fat. I started to read up on the physiological reaction we have to some nutrients, and came to see that a ‘one size fits all approach’ might

I think we’re all taking less for granted and asking more questions. There’s been explosion of lifestyle Illnesses in recent years rather than the older style communicable diseases that you can ‘catch’ and it has left everyone wondering. For example, why are so many people now living with a type 2 diabetes diagnosis. It’s got to be something we are doing, living with, breathing, eating – or something we are not doing.

The problem may not be our fault but the solution is our responsibility. It has maybe taken till now because of the busy lifestyles we lead, but health problems have sneaked up on us. We are now starting by to realise that the fast, convenient and longer lasting food that we have become accustomed to is stealing our health - but real food has the power to heal. Any advice or tips for a novice who wants to explore the world of nutrition and better their Health and Well being? First and foremost, try focusing on the quality of the food. That might mean you buy less of a good quality meat but bulk out with vegetables. I buy organic mince from grass fed cattle, but it is more expensive – so I buy less of it and bulk out my bolognese with lentils. Practice making things from scratch. Yes it takes a bit more time but the benefits are worth it. A bit of planning and a couple of hours on a Sunday can sort out your home made meals for the week and why not try a meat free day a week! When shopping, I’d suggest you try to buy

What can we expect from you for 2018? You can expect to see and hear a lot more from me as a Nutrition and Lifestyle Coach in 2018. I’ll be looking at different ways of reaching more people. I’m currently looking at working in partnership with some local wellbeing hub’s. The power of Nutrition and Lifestyle Coaching is in working on an individual basis, co-creating a health plan that supports the client to achieve their goals. That might be weight loss, balancing blood sugars, sleeping better, getting rid of cravings, becoming more active, reducing dependency on one food or food group – there are so many elements to health and wellness and it’s very personal. As well as the One 2 One clients, I’ll be working with small groups, for example of family and friends, who have similar goals. That suits many people – helps with a bit of extra support but also helps spread the cost for people.

Where do you see yourself in business in the next five years? The pace in this field is faster than I’ve ever seen in any other industry (apart from computing). Wellness is multi-dimensional and holistic. It changes over time and along a continuum, and is most importantly individual, but also influenced by the environment and community. There is so much research going on and so many new findings coming out every day, but one thing is for sure – the trend is upward. The Health & Wellness market space is predicted by economists to be the next trillion dollar industry with healthy eating, nutrition and weight loss trending to take a good quarter of that. Not the reason I entered this marketplace, but I’m excited that the thing I’m passionate about is on the upward trajectory. In five years’ time, I expect my business to be thriving, with a good portfolio of clients. I’d like to specialise in the Immune System and supporting people with autoimmune conditions – often the hardest to understand the how and the why. I hope in 5 years’ time the government guidelines and recommendations will have caught up with the science. I hope that good quality food will be more affordable and that the food industry will be brought into line – but I think 5 years for that may be wishful thinking. For each of us, all we can is our best – as in all aspects of life, make the best choices we can with the resources we have available.

LIFE & STYLE

not actually fit all. I enrolled on a Nutritional Therapy course with the Institute of Health Sciences in Dublin and the more I studied and progressed through the course the more my mind opened to the possibility that in most cases, a higher stage of wellness can be achieved through nutrition and lifestyle choices. I’ve been inspired by people like Dr Rangan Chatterjee (BBC’s Dr in the House). Last year I completed the first stage of my studies and am now a qualified Nutrition and Lifestyle Coach.
