TREND HIGHLIGHT: Mardi Gras Origins
Mardi Gras, widely recognized today for its parties and parades, orginally began as a religoius Christian holiday with roots in medieval Europe. It was first celebrated in the United States
on March 2, 1699. The French Explorer Jean Baptiste Le Moyne Sieur de Bienville introduced the holiday when he established a colony at the mouth of the Mississippi.

FLEUR DE LIS
Represents faith
Represents power or money
The fleur-de-lis is a symbol with many meanings often seen at Mardi Gras in New Orleans. The fleur-de-lis is a stylized depiction of a lily flower with three petals that are bound together in the center. The word “fleur” means flower and “lis” means lily in French. The fleur-de-lis symbolizes many things, including French royalty and culture, purity, light, and virtue.
KING CAKE
A sugary dessert featuring a hidden plastic baby, the king cake is said to represent liturgical living during Mardi Gras season. The baby inside the sugary pastry is said to represent Jesus. According to tradition, whoever finds the piece of cake with the baby inside will have good luck and success.

Masks were originally worn at Mardi Gras so that people could mingle regardless of class, and the tradition continues today. It allowed attendees of all class distinctions to mingle freely with each other — allowing comradery and everyone the ability to participate. In fact, people on floats are required by law to wear masks that hide their identities.
