The Slot

San Francisco at foot of Market Stree circa 1916

SoMa originated from the nickname “South of the Slot”, which referred to wrong side of Market Street, during the time where many Gold Rush immigrants migrated to the industrial area for work. The physical “slot” is referring to the opening on the cable car tracks where the cable lies and provides power to the cable cars from the power house on Mason Street. 7
