01 Abstract

4

South of the Slot Craft Studios (SSCS), is located South of Market; in an area where opportunity for work, education and a sense of community is needed. The Hugo Hotel at one time was a thriving single room occupancy hotel. Now, it is best known for its art installation of anthropomorphic furniture attached to the exterior of the building. Created and installed by local artist Brian Goggin with the assistance of community volunteers and artists. SSCS features four traditional and three cutting edge classes. The classes are wood trade, printmaking/ lithography, the art of leather working, fiber arts/ sewing, welding, laser cutting, digital arts. These

classes are taught by local artists and tradespeople who volunteer their time working with the community in exchange for use of the facilities. The objective of this project is to create a synergistic environment of learning and professional growth for the students and teachers in the mentioned trades. The average class size is 8 students Students are not the only ones who will benefit from the SSCS, patrons in the community are able to visit the bike shop to purchase accessories or patch a bike tire. The smell of the bakery permeates throughout the block, bringing many locals in to try pastries baked by employees who are part of the co-op. The building is intended to be a beacon for personal growth by enriching the citizens of

the community with added skillsets to take into a professional environment or just as a hobby. After the art installation “defenestration, SSCS is one of the best things to happen to the community. It provides a second chance for those who were recently laid off, and creates opportunities to develop new ways for locals to support themselves. The skills learned at SSCS can be used for jobs in the future which in turn, will help the community thrive and prosper.

02 Concept

6

Statement The concept focuses on the inner workings of the machine, which stays true to the nature of SoMa,being the working side of Market. It also focuses on the dynamics of the machine and how they function and operate

7

The Slot SoMa originated from the nickname “South of the Slot”, which referred to wrong side of Market Street, during the time where many Gold Rush immigrants migrated to the industrial area for work. The physical “slot” is referring to the opening on the cable car tracks where the cable lies and provides power to the cable cars from the power house on Mason Street. People who lived in the Southern part of the slot were considered poor or working class. Many of them were immigrants who held tradesman jobssuch as working in coal refineries and manufacturing plants. People on the Northern side of Market Street, were well off and held jobs such as bankers and businessmen. It was rare to have people cross the slot both physically and economically. Many of the tradesmen were responsible for supporting the inner workings of the city, as well as, performing many of the day-to-day tasks for the buildings north of the slot. The concept for this projects was achieved from the contradiction that the social, economic, and psychological line that was physically represented by the slot. The contradiction that I observed was that the community was divided by the very machinery and infrastructure that integrally joined it. The machinery and infrastructure that the people south of the slot worked on was woven into every street, purchased and placed into every home, used in every building throughout the city. 8

Left to right: inspecting the track, underneath the turn table, active cable car

I further used the slot and the machinery I observed from the cable cars muesuem to develop a building that is capable of breathing life back in to the struggling South of Market economy. The dynamics of a machine starts with an energy source and is dependent on the parts to direct the energy into

useful work. This building is meant to act as that energy source or catalyst to stimulate community and increase professional growth. The SSCS will also provide an environment to encourage mentorship and give direction to the community. The SSCS will impart useful skills to the community

and, much like, a machine the community needs all of its citizens contributing to the overall success of the economy and the city at large.

Inspiration Louise Nevelson is one of America’s foremost women artists. She brilliantly used wooden objects which she gathered from urban debris to create monumental installations. Many of her sculptures were reflections of personal feelings about an uprooted childhood, clashing cultures, and nature’s divinity. Her pieces are puzzle-like with delicate intricately cut pieces placed into wall structures or independently standing pieces.

Neighborhood South of Market (SoMa) is a large district which covers the area from the Embarcadero to Eleventh Street, between Market and Townsend. The district is home to a patchwork of warehouses, night clubs, art spaces, loft apartments and start-up companies. Eating and drinking establishments contribute to the street’s mixed-use activity and a number of professional and business offices are located in converted residential units. The South of Market turned what used to be a sign of poverty into a thriving area. An increase number of companies have moved into this area including internationally recognized Adobe, The Design Center and Zyanga. Although SoMa is up and coming, 6th street between Market and Folsom is slowly changing. The neighborhood has its share of single room hotels and liquor stores. The area attracts homeless and other unsavory characters. Within the neighborhood, there is a small group of people who are making efforts to bring change to the area. Among the bad, there is good: art studios a sprinkled throughout the area. One in particular is First Amendment (1AM). 1AM represents the freedom of speech through street art exhibitions, walls, and classes. 1AM strives to progress the street art culture and create a community of artists, fans, and like-minded organizations. 14

Demographics Companies like Twitter, One Kings Lane, and Spofity have partnered with the City to help stimulate the neighborhood’s economy and promote safety. The City developed very specific goals that centered on community, diversity, economic growth, and the vitality of the district. A few of the primary goals of the South of Market Area Plan: • Protect and facilitate the expansion of industrial, artisan, home and business service, neighborhood-serving retail, and community service activities.

• Protect existing economic, social and cultural diversity. • Preserve existing amenities and improve neighborhood livability for South of Market residents, workers and visitors. South of the Slot Craft Studios encompasses the City of San Francisco’s primary goals for the SoMa district by focusing on providing space for design professionals and small business start-ups and by providing classes that will be beneficial to the local community. Public use of the space generates employment for the low income area.

Vicinity Map Although SoMa is extremely close to many of the pleasant and thriving areas of downtown San Francisco, the neighborhood has fallen into a great state of dilapidation. The area has been riddled with crime and lack of formal solutions to this growing culture of passive neglect. Drug clinics, and liquors stores blanket the streets, making the area unsafe to walk. The high percentage of high school drop-outs is prevalent, as well as, high unemployment rate. The City is well aware of the situation and is attempting to implement new forms of aid in combination of development opportunities to help stimulate growth in SoMa.

Original Plans The Hugo Hotel was designed by a San Jose native, Theodore W. Lezen, in 1909. The hotel was purchased and managed by the Patel family since 1964, but sadly, the 144 single room occupancy, was forced to shut down after a devastating fire in 1988. The hotel was left abandoned for many years until 1997 when an artist by the name of Brian Goggin, and with the help of 100 volunteers, installed one of the most popular art pieces in the city, “Defenestration”, which means to throw out the window. The concept of the art piece was derived from the economic challenges many members of the community felt and endured. Many felt like cast-offs and unappreciated, similar to the anthropomorphic (to give inanimate objects human-like attributes) furniture in Brian’s installation. The installation that was only meant to be up for one year has lasted until present day and has brought members of the community together. It has also, brought attention to a neighborhood in need of revitalization.

These organizations believe in SSCS and find it beneficial to the neighborhood as well as The City. In exchange for providing funding, SFMade and The Hub, will lease the fourth floor for three years rent free. The space will allow them to expand to focus on expanding their organizations

Funders Two well established organizations will provide funding to the South of the Slot Craft Studios, SFMade and The Hub. SFMade is a one of a kind non-profit organization that focuses on building San Francisco’s economic profile by concentrating on developing the local manufacturing sector. It works closely with growing small, local SF based companies by offering them industry-specific education, networking opportunities, and connecting them to local resources. In doing this, SFMade has aided in sustaining and creating job opportunities for the City’s low-income individuals. In the old San Francisco Chronicle building, on the Corner of 5th and Mission Street, in the quickly changing SoMa district, lives The Hub. It is a place where purpose-driven people connect and participate in programs to build solutions. At the Hub, members attend networking events, run businesses, work with clients, find social networks, and launch companies. Staff and members provide support and advice through the process. What makes the hub unique is having the opportunity or flexibility to work as a group in communal areas or retreat into a private area. They may also reserve a conference room for important meetings or take a seat in the café to enjoy a cup of coffee with a new friend. The Hub provides a multitude of working spaces designed to foster collaboration, innovation, and a fun work experience. 27

Based on the demographics of the area it was important to make sure that the SSCS programs are structured for a variety of people. The teaching format is to have the students create success through experience and readiness. It is important to have our students get, hands on, simulated experience without restricting the creative process. Below are some of the profiles of students

John Dunbar

is a retired pilot whose hobbies include weekend small plane flying, air plane construction, spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren. John has a strong interest in the welding course that can support and broaden his abilities for plane construction and other hobbies. He is looking forward to the introductory guided course to learn about the general principles of welding. He believes that learning is a continuous process and is an important part of enriching his life.

Anthony Tave

is an engineer by trade and has an interest in carpentry. He and his wife recently purchased a starter home, which needs some repair. Anthony is eager to fix the house and claims he knows how, but his wife doesn’t believe him. He feels that attending the carpentry class twice a week will give him the capability to master a few of the projects around the house and give his wife the confidence that he will be able to do a good job.

Lisa Tang is a new resident to San Francisco and has

been living here for 1 year. She is looking to make a career change due to being laid off from her barista job. Lisa has expressed an interest in artisanship, but has not committed to a career path. She is looking for exposure to the artisan crafts and will be taking the Intro to artisan-ship course that will allow a 1 year training and exposure to 4 artisan trades of her choice.

Gerald and Josephine

are a father and daughter duo who are San Francisco natives with an interest in starting a family business. Gerald grew up near 6th and Howard; he is determined not to give his daughter the similar upbringing in he had. Both he and his daughter are currently working at St. Vincent De Paul’s kitchen. Neither of them have formal culinary training, but look forward to applying and working at SoMa Bakes Co-op. Their primary goal is to generate capital through the coop program. 29

Autobiography

66

I am the first born child of Haitian immigrants. My mother arrived to the states at a young age and my father arrived in his early 30’s. My parents were loving parents, but they didn’t know much about American life and culture; they focused on the practicalities and the necessities of life. Like many Haitian little girls, I was given a sewing machine. I began to design and make clothing for my dolls, then moved to creating doll houses from shoeboxes. I spent many hours cutting scraps of fabric and cardboard to create curtains, bedding and furniture. When I entered my teenage years, the thought of building doll houses and sewing was quickly swapped for boys, clothing, and make-up. I went through high school never once thinking about my childhood hobbies. My junior year of high school was consumed of getting into college. My parents made it clear to me that this was the path and that I was setting the precedent for my two younger brothers. I chose a few colleges and was accepted to Cal Poly Pomona. Not knowing much about the wide array of majors, I declared Accounting as my major. By the second quarter, I knew it was not for me. I changed my major to international business with a minor in political science. I landed a job in non-profit as a project coordinator and was able to travel internationally. The best thing that happened in my career was to get laid off. Being laid off forced me to revisit my career goals and re-evaluate my career aspirations. I returned to my childhood hobbies and I realized that in my next career I wanted something creative and hands on. I look forward to the next chapters of my life, raising my family and working with designers, gaining real world experience, perhaps beginning a small firm of my own.
