Selfportrait by C. Aymonino, 1983-84
“ [...] l’architettura moderna è difficile, si nota e non si nota, non ha decorazioni, non è molto evidente e non ha aggiunte e quindi è anche difficile scoprirla... ancor prima di capirla” C. Aymonino, 2002
“ [...] modern Architecture is tough, it shows and it doesn’t, it has no ornament, it is hardly noticeable and it has no additions and so it is tough to identify... longer before to understand it”

Quoting Walter Benjamin, architecture has always been perceived in a state of distraction. This condition is somehow amplified with modern architecture due to its austere manifestation. What emerge from the work of C. Aymonino is the intent to overcome this common distraction by showing his architectures and make the visitor aware of the space he is living in and experiencing; what he uses for this purpose is the pathway. Despite the common attitude toward these servant spaces C. Aymonino designs them with a key role in the architectural composition. In his lifetime production the pathway emerges as a space itself with its own dignity and autonomy. This is achieved through a precise composition of basic and recognizable elements that in a subtle ensemble convey in vibrant public spaces. In analogy with the effort showed by the author to avoid distraction, the itinerary of the exhibition will be an abstract manifestation of these pathways with the aim to engage the visitor in a sort of comprehension of the space through experience. The travelling exhibition, constituted by a series of adaptable models fitted to the different exhibition spaces will give the possibility to the visitor to embrace the concepts of the author through the direct comprehension of the space. By its organization the exhibition will recall the explored theme, the different fragments of pathways resembling a selection of both built and not built projects, will gene-
rate a pathway of stationary spaces. Altogether they will manifest as a fluent way rich of variations, one by one will represent a place to stay. In his project, Carlo Aymonino always declines the concept of pathway in different ways: sometimes it is an element in itself that rises from the global composition for its shape and its colours as in the residential building of Monte Amiata in Milan; at times it is composed of different autonomous elements that contribute to create a homogeneous space as in the Liceo Scientifico in Pesaro; at other times, on the other hand, it is an element that, seamlessly, connects the project of the new with the pre-existing context and allows you to discover the different levels, as in Casa Parcheggio in Pesaro. These are just examples of the variety with which the architect has dealt with the theme and how the exhibition will deal with it through a deep investigation of his built projects and those never risen.

New dimension Between 1963 and ‘66, together with Aldo Rossi and a group of younger collaborators, he elaborated the load-bearing structure of his theory in the course of building distribution characteristics, working on the relationship between urban morphology and building typology, or on the nexus between architecture and urban form, in its historical formation and de-formation in «urban phenomenon», facing in innovative terms the theme of urban growth and, with reference to the debate on the directional centers, of the new dimension. At the same time, Aymonino takes an in-depth look at the typology of the residence, to resume the Engelsian reflection on the «housing question» on the disciplinary level. Two projects of these years can be considered experimental and paradigmatic: the competition project for the reconstruction of the Paganini Theater in Parma (1966) and the realization of the Monte Amiata complex at Gallaratese, in Milan (1967-74).
Teaching Architecture The link between theoretical and design practice is constant and informs the educational and professional activity of Carlo Aymonino, merging into a coherent, problematic and experimental whole. In the development of his activity at the IUAV, of which he will be rector between ‘74 and ‘79, the intensity of this attitude will emerge clearly, well described by Nino Dardi in tracing the story of the Architecture Group, founded by Aymonino together with the same Dardi, Semerani, Polesello, Canella and other younger ones: Carlo Aymonino proposed elementary rules of behavior: prepare a written lesson, where their theses were exposed, read it to class to colleagues and students, and open a discussion on this topic : thinking, writing, typing, mimeographing, spreading, 22
reading, debating. Rereading the texts of those years, an unequivocal vocation and a priority option immediately strikes: in favor of a tight logic construction, a very wide methodological discipline, a vocation to build laws, to seek norms, to affirm principles.
Urban science The link between architecture and the city is experienced in a patient research that emerges from his works: civil architecture in which the objective of building fragments of the public city is clear, with the projects of the Seventies for the universities of Florence and the Calabrie, competitions which constitute an important test for the most significant positions expressed by the Italian architectural culture of those years, then public buildings: the courthouses of Brindisi (1961) and Ferrara (1977), the projects and the works realized in Pesaro, in particular the 1971 school campus and the Benelli headquarters in 1981.
The idea of Piazza The square, for Carlo Aymonino, is the «place» of the city par excellence; it is the connecting element between the architecture and the built city, and each new project intervention carried out establishes a relationship with what is still preserved in the historical city. He has in fact conducted numerous studies and research on the nature of these areas rich in historical sedimentation, often trying to go to propose architectural solutions attentive to the specificity of local problems. With Aymonino the square returns to be a place of relationship between the urban structure and the architectural solution.

This exhibition wants to show you the architectural setting of Carlo Aymonino, one of the most important Italian figure during the second half of ‘900, period of strong tendencies that shaped the current idea of Architecture. What you are going to find during the visit will not be just the display of his life or his works; each of the devices placed around the room is the synthesis of one of the elements used by Carlo Aymonino in his architecture. Inside the projects he uses pure forms in order to make the visitor aware of the space he is living, combining this ‘functional objects’ inside the overall architectural projects. Today you will observe and live this objects, in their shape and colors. Each of them will be a different way of visiting, observing and staying in a place, that you can freely decide how to experience according to your favor. The aim of the exhibition is to give you awareness of where you are, in opposition to the current tendency of being more interested in virtual reality rather than the physical one. Living this places you will find the right way to stay inside the architecture, according to the idea of Carlo Aymonino.

Way to stay is an travelling exhibition project by Alessia Annunziata, Octavio Blanco and Marco De Donno, a group of Master students in Architecture at Politecnico di Milano, experimenting in the wild wide field of architecture. - A. Annunziata is also working for Castelli Folci Associati, an Architecture Studio in the centre of Milan. - O. Blanco is member of the collective Cose, a small group that investigate space through construction; he collaborated in 2015 and 2017 with the design practice ifDesign. - M. De Donno, after the studies brought him to live some periods in Lisbon and Paris, is still looking for his way.
