HONORING Diana Hart LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD John Lee ENTERTAINMENT Michael Feinstein
Congratulations Diana!
Your family is so proud to call you our daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, auntie, friend, counselor, nurturer, superhero! We love you.
TRY TO REMEMBER THE KIND OF SEPTEMBER…OR IS IT NOVEMBER?
The past months have brought me some consternation as I try to check in with how much time has gone by since Covid locked us down. Seems like a lot of time has gone by since “normal,” but weirdly I can’t remember much of it. Was that 2020? 2021? Who knows? Does it matter? The usual triggers that help us remember, like holidays, family celebrations and yes, concerts, were pulled away like someone moving my chair just as I was about to sit down. So, forgive me if I am a little dazed. What I do remember, strongly, is how our community came together to help us remain in business and keep functioning as we faced an uncertain future. Generosity flowed as we asked for, and received, support from individuals, foundations, and the government. We banded together with our colleagues around the state and indeed, the nation, to lobby for governmental funding to help tide us over. The sharing of resources from all corners of New Jersey allowed us to access grants and emergency funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, the New Jersey Economic Development Authority and more. NJ Cares raised funds and then gave them to organizations in need. There’s so much more to this story but the overriding message is that our community at large worked together to keep us all afloat. What bonds us together, and jogs our memories (!), are experiences that resonate deeply with our common humanity. Arts experiences of all kinds allow us to understand our commonality as human beings. World cultures from the beginning of time have recorded the human experience in myriad forms, from cave paintings to multi-media immersive experiences. They all touch something deep in our DNA that brings us an exultation of yes! This is what it means to be human! The guitar virtuoso, a great jazz singer, a sublime dance, a visual immersion into a painting or sculpture all bring us together to share a deep experience. This is at the core of our mission at SOPAC – to bring arts to our community that make life richer, more meaningful, and ultimately transformative. As we look forward to 2022, we are excited to return to in-person arts experiences, both inside and outside SOPAC, that give us all strength and inspiration.
Putting the pieces of the theatre and lobby back together is still very much a work in progress. We promise that it will be a grand celebration when we can once again open our doors and welcome you back to SOPAC. I assure you I won’t have any problem remembering this glorious evening as we celebrate John Lee and Diana Hart, and revel in the music of Michael Feinstein. I know you won’t either.
Best,
Dee Billia Executive Director
POWERFULLY APPLAUDING THE ARTS American Express® is committed to supporting experiences that move us, whether it’s virtually or center stage at the South Orange Performing Arts Center.
DEAR PATRONS
Yes, it has been an exceedingly difficult time. SOPAC and our community have been reeling. COVID shut us down for 18 months and then, just 8 days before we were to re-open our theater doors, Hurricane Ida slammed downtown South Orange flooding many businesses and homes. In the wake of the storm, SOPAC’s mainstage will be dark until the new year. Together we will emerge from this darkness stronger than ever. The South Orange community has united behind the strong leadership of Village President Sheena Collum and our remarkable Board of Trustees. SOPAC will weather this storm because of our generous patrons and our talented and committed staff behind the leadership of Executive Director Dee Billia. We are grateful. And that is what tonight is all about – celebrating our community, our patrons, and our staff. We also celebrate tonight’s honorees, Diana Hart and John Lee. Tonight’s celebration is about showing all that has made SOPAC the best small performing arts center in New Jersey 6 years running! Tonight, we need your help to come out of this pandemic strong. We need your financial support to get us to 7 years in a row. So, when it comes to the silent auction and the paddle raise, we ask that you dig deep. We are deeply grateful for your generous support.
Enjoy the show and we look forward to welcoming you back to SOPAC when we finally can open our doors once again. Onward,
Paul Bartick
SOPAC Chair and the Board of Governors

HONORING DIANA HART My inspiration to connect with SOPAC came from witnessing my intrepid, creative mother who founded and ran, for 30 years, a music & arts organization for differently abled youth. As a blind woman, she understood there was great need to connect people of all abilities, cultures and economic situations to the arts, music and each other. Before I joined SOPAC, I read an article in the local newspaper about the teens in our sister towns being kicked off the public library property. I saw a need. I reached out to the community and was connected to YouthNet. With their help, we created a “Teen Coffee House” that met monthly. The kids were able to meet, perform music, dance, poetry, display their art and “hang out.” Not be kicked out! When I was asked to join the SOPAC Board, I did not think it was for me. I had no “Board” experience, and besides, my plate was already full. I was a busy mother of three and running a catering business. However, after meeting with some of the wonderful people on the SOPAC Board and staff, I realized this was an opportunity to expand and grow. My plate just got bigger as did my experience. Food, like music, art, poetry and dance, is a great equalizer. It connects us all. At SOPAC, with the help of fellow Board members, Donna Coallier and Summer Jones, we created “Savor the Arts,” connecting chefs from surrounding communities through food, music & dance. It was so much fun!
If we can contribute to the community we live in, we receive in return the gift of giving, learning and growing together. Please find your passion and say “Yes.” Feed the heart and soul, the mind and body of humanity, and we have a beautiful world to live in together.
LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD JOHN LEE Bassist, producer, composer, and audio engineer, John Lee was born June 28th, 1952 in Boston, Massachusetts. The son of an A.M.E. minister, and a social worker, John’s earliest musical impressions were formed in church, and at home listening to his parents extensive Jazz and Gospel record collection. In 1970, after graduating from Overbrook High School in Philadelphia, John enrolled at the Philadelphia Musical Academy to study string bass and composition. John also began performing with the bands of Carlos Garnett, Joe Henderson, Pharoah Sanders, and Max Roach. In June of 1972, Herbie Hancock introduced John to his friend, and kindred musical spirit, Chris Hinze, the great Dutch flautist. In August of 1972, John moved to Holland to join the Chris Hinze Combination. During this time abroad, he also worked and recorded with Gary Bartz, Philip Catherine, Joe Henderson, Jasper Van’T Hof, Joachim Kühn, Charlie Mariano, James Moody, Sahib Shihab, Jeremy Steig and Toots Thielemans. After returning to the United States in the fall of 1974, John moved to New York and began working in the bands of Norman Connors, Joe Henderson, and Lonnie Liston Smith. In 1975, John joined Larry Coryell’s Eleventh House Band, and he also began to form his own bands with drummer Gerry Brown. In 1977, John left the Eleventh House to concentrate on the John Lee/ Gerry Brown Band. In 1982, he joined the McCoy Tyner Quintet, where he worked until joining the legendary Dizzy Gillespie in 1984. The long personal and professional association that ensued was to be a turning point in Lee’s career. From 1984 until Dizzy transitioned in 1993, John was the bassist in the trumpet master’s various bands including the Dizzy Gillespie Quintet, Dizzy Gillespie 70th Anniversary Big Band, Dizzy’s Grammy Award-winning United Nation Orchestra, and Dizzy Gillespie & Miriam Makeba’s “Back to the Future Band.”
After Dizzy’s passing, his family asked John to create an ongoing tribute to the great man and his music…and the concept for the Dizzy Gillespie All-Stars was born. John also began working in the bands of Jon Faddis, Aretha Franklin, Roy Hargrove, Jimmy Heath, Gregory Hines, James Moody, Claudio Roditi, and Sonny Rollins. At present, John is the executive and musical director of the Dizzy Gillespie All-Stars, the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band, and the Dizzy Gillespie Afro-Latin Experience. John is also a Grammy winning record producer and a seasoned recording engineer. To date he has engineered over 100 CDs and he has produced over 70 CDs. The Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Bands have performed in major concert halls and Jazz festivals throughout the world including; Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Curaçao, Denmark, England, Finland, France, Germany, Holland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lebanon, Luxembourg, Monaco, Norway, Portugal, Russia, Scotland, Singapore, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, Uruguay and Wales.
ENTERTAINMENT MICHAEL FEINSTEIN Michael Feinstein has built a dazzling career over the last three decades bringing the music of the Great American Songbook to the world. From recordings that have earned him five Grammy Award nominations to his Emmy nominated PBSTV specials, his acclaimed NPR series and concerts spanning the globe – in addition to his appearances at iconic venues such as The White House, Buckingham Palace, Hollywood Bowl, Carnegie Hall and Sydney Opera House – his work as an educator and archivist defines Feinstein as one of the most important musical forces of our time. In 2007, he founded the Great American Songbook Foundation, dedicated to celebrating the art form and preserving it through educational programs, Master Classes, and the annual High School Songbook Academy. This summer intensive open to students from across the country has produced graduates who have gone on to record acclaimed albums and appear on television programs such as NBC’s “America’s Got Talent.” Michael serves on the Library of Congress’ National Recording Preservation Board, an organization dedicated to ensuring the survival, conservation and increased public availability of America’s sound recording heritage. Michael was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio, where he started playing piano by ear as a 5-year-old. After graduating from high school, he moved to Los Angeles when he was 20. The widow of legendary concert pianist-actor Oscar Levant introduced him to Ira Gershwin in July 1977. Feinstein became Gershwin’s assistant for six years, which earned him access to numerous unpublished Gershwin songs, many of which he has since performed and recorded.
Gershwin’s influence provided a solid base upon which Feinstein evolved into a captivating performer, composer and arranger of his own original music. He also has become an unparalleled interpreter of music legends such as Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Johnny Mercer, Duke Ellington and Harry Warren. Feinstein has received three honorary doctorates. Through his live performances, recordings, film and television appearances, and his songwriting (in collaboration with Alan and Marilyn Bergman, Lindy Robbins, Bob Merrill and Marshall Barer), Feinstein is an all-star force in American music.
Thank you to the Staff of SOPAC
who have continued to work through a difficult time, between Covid and Ida, in order to keep SOPAC alive so that it can thrive once again Susan & Steven Pozner
HOSTED BY
AUCTIONEER
JOE LARSON
CHARLES ANTIN
Joe is a comedian, husband and father – the former makes the latter well….interesting.
Charles is delighted to be back at SOPAC once again.
When Joe met his now wife she loved how much he made her laugh. He warned her that while she finds it cute now, she may feel differently when he is unable to do anything but joke during the heat of an argument. As his wife eventually found out “You’re funny all the time!” can quickly turn into “Does everything have to be a joke?”
Charles has auctioneered hundreds of benefits over the last decade, raising tens of millions for charities including the Clinton Foundation, Seth Rogen’s Hilarity for Charity, Family House (San Francisco), Teach for China (Hong Kong), the Brady Center for the Prevention of Gun Violence, the Friends of Acadia auction, Pairings Nashville and auctions benefiting the Boston Symphony and the Nantucket Wine Festival. He was also a NY State licensed commercial auctioneer at Christie’s, at the time of licensing the youngest at the firm, bringing down the gavel on thousands of lots and tens of millions of dollars of wine, watches, post-war & contemporary art, Asian art and single-owner collections, such as the collections of Robert H. Ellsworth and Huguette Clark. He holds an MFA in fiction from NYU, a commercial pilot’s license and his essays and fiction have appeared in Food & Wine, The New York Times, the VQR and elsewhere.
Perhaps it’s not his fault, Joe is after all a second generation comedian. Much to his parent’s dismay at the age of twenty, Joe went into the family business. Straight away he was chosen College Comedian of the Year at the Las Vegas Comedy Festival and shortly after he made the move to New York City where he paid his dues at any club that would give him the mic. Joe has been on stage at some of the best rooms in the city including the famed Caroline’s On Broadway and Gotham Comedy Club. He was nominated “Best Up-AndComing Comedian” at the NYC MAC Awards, was a finalist in both the prestigious Johnny Carson Great American Comedy Festival and Boston Comedy Festival and was part of the feature film Stand Up 360. Joe has also been seen on Gotham Comedy Live, NBC’s “America’s Got Talent,” “Laughs” on FOX, the Tonight Show’s Laugh Squad and the Speed Channel. On radio he is a repeat guest on Bob and Tom and the Bennington Show.

JOHN LEE! YES! YES! YES!
June 6, 1998: I remember standing in the wings that first night and feeling it, the audience felt it, there was electricity in the air. We were sharing in an extraordinary event: Jon Faddis, Jackie McLean, Mulgrew, Slide, Phil, and others on one stage for one night. Giants of Jazz had taken on a life of its own…and it was flying!
John is a compassionate visionary for whom Jazz is a pathway to community. He deeply understands that great music needs to be nurtured and made accessible for everyone. His reach embraces musicians at all levels of career, and audiences of all kinds. John, please accept the biggest and brightest thank you for sharing your extraordinary talents with all of us.
