PUTTING YOUR BEST FOOT FORWARD BY TRACEY DE KOCK

Interestingly, the average height of the high-heel measured 3 to 3.5 inches in the past, but today we are seeing anything up to 7 inches! So, not only are we having to master the art of walking in towering heels, but have the added discomfort of even the most beautiful shoes being (mostly) made from synthetic fabric.

Chunky Heeled Boots A chunky block heel is the way to go! Ankle boots remain a popular choice, but knee high styles are still on trend. Any shape works - pointed, rounded or in between.

I personally believe that you will be better served by investing in a few pairs of good quality leather shoes, versus masses that are of bad quality. A perfectly balanced shoe is a mastered art which has been compromised since machines took over for mass production. Purchasing a handmade pair of shoes is a sheer luxury nowadays, due to availability as well as the cost, however, one of the best investments you could make for your wardrobe (and your health).

WHAT’S HOT FOR WINTER? “Shoes transform your body language and attitude. They lift you physically and emotionally!” Christian Louboutin

From extremely opulent to very casual, metallic sneakers to couture glam, there's a winter shoe trend to suit all occasions. Texture and embellishments, as well as interesting finishes play a huge role.

Ah... The delight at being born a woman! The world is truly our oyster with regards to the range of styles, colours, patterns and heights from which to choose, and with 15% of women owning one pair of shoes for every day of the month, I would say we are making good use of these options.

Shoe trends often take their cue from the newest clothing lines, and right now anything metallic (toe cap, heel or finish) will give an outfit an instant lift.

One of the most important factors in choosing shoes is price, even though there are many amongst us who will clear out the bank account to get their hands on a designer pair. Comfort seemingly doesn’t have much influence over style, it is so often the higher heels that we see featured on the catwalks. On a recent visit to the UK, I noticed that many women actually swop their heels for trainers (or “takkies”) when commuting to and from work. This allows them to walk at a good pace and with ease to and from public transport, whilst then being able to wear “killer heels” at the office. Doctors do warn that walking in heels could cause long-term back, knee and ankle damage, however, it must be said that trainers are an instant outfit killer!

Flatforms Not everyone's choice (as they are tricky to walk in), but definitely an 'alternative’ style of shoe which is gaining popularity.

Metallics

Capped Toes A pair of pumps in a dual-tone (metallic capped heal or toe) will add a touch of classic elegance to your ensemble (think Chanel).

The pointed heel is enjoying a renewed popularity, either as a kitten heel or stiletto. Choose a rounded front for a feminine look, but if you want to ramp-up-your-vamp go for a sharp point.

At the South African Image Company KZN, we do understand that there may be times where finding the balance between comfort and style (on a tight budget) could be discouraging and may force you to choose one over the other. Our “FIX IT” guide has been designed to help you should you be faced with this dilemma.

FIX IT! Dilemma: You have bought an “OMG” pair of shoes to wear to a special event and you can’t wait!

Luxe Slippers Add a quirky edge to your outfit and take the plain slipper shoe to the next level by selecting one in a gorgeous design. Animal prints seem to be at the top of the list, with studs and embroidery not far behind.

Tracey says: Don’t wait! Get used to a new pair of shoes before you debut them. You want to be one of the ladies who wear their entire outfit throughout the event and not one of those standing with shoes dangling in-hand! Dilemma: A new pair of leather shoes is proving to be a little tight. Tracey says:

Wear them with a thick pair of socks (at home) or stuff them with rolled-up socks and leave overnight.

Dilemma: Your shoes fitted snuggly

when you bought them, but now that you have worn them in a bit your feet slide as you walk and the friction is causing blisters.

Prints With prints in clothing being big at the moment, shoes have not been forgotten! Whether it be stripes, animal print, or even houndstooth, it will give your outfit an interesting edge.

Tracey says: A full cushion in-sole which fits the entire length of your shoe will help absorb shock and prevent your feed from sliding forward.

TIPS

FOR

Pointed Heels

BUYING

SHOES

• Always try and shop for shoes at the beginning of the day before your feet may have had a chance to swell. • Know what you are buying shoes for (Stilettos are not an option if you are chasing children all day!) For daily-use heels, consider a thicker heel which offers good support. Even better, opt for a wedge, as the heel is evenly distributed over the entire sole of the shoe. • Choose quality over quantity, especially if you are on a budget. • Black is NOT always best. Neutrals and nudes have just as much versatility, and create the illusion of height (and longer legs!)

Tracey says:

• Know your size. Your feet continue to change throughout your life, so it's advisable to check this every 2 years. There should be at least one finger space between the longest toe and the front of the shoe.

Dilemma:

• Try BOTH shoes on. We all have one foot that is slightly bigger than the other.

Dilemma: You have fallen for those 7 inch heels, and love wearing them, but you can’t spend too much time wearing them. Wearing high heels places a great deal of pressure on the ball of your foot so I suggest using a gel or cushion insert that sits under the ball of your foot.

You love wearing flats but you have heard that they don’t provide enough arch support.

Tracey says: When buying flat shoes,

check to see whether they have padded soles. If not, you can insert arch supports or in-soles.

In the words of Iris Apfel: “If your hair is done properly and you’re wearing a good pair of shoes, you can get away with anything”

• Walk around them. They may look gorgeous on your foot but there movement must be checked too. Pay attention to gaping and pinching (some of it could be rectified), as well as how your foot sits in the shoe.

TOOLS OF THE TRADE Have you ever wondered why, when you go into a cosmetics shop the makeup artists manage to make you look spectacular.? You buy the products and when you get home you battle to recreate the same look. Other than their talent, it is because they are using the correct tools to do so.

Using the correct tools for the job is imperitive! Here are a few tips to make sure you get it right everytime! HOW DO I REMEMBER WHICH BRUSHES ARE FOR WHAT?

213 FLUFF BRUSH TO APPLY EYESHADDOW

WHAT ABOUT SPONGES?

Sponges are great for blending liquid foundation, but bear in mind that they do absorb a lot of your product so there is an element of wastage. I like to use sponges to blend after I have applied my foundation with a flat foundation brush.

BRUSH CLEANER

HOW DO I CLEAN MY BRUSHES?

Invest in a good quality brush cleaner. This will disinfect and condition the hairs of your brushes. Remember baby shampoo is great and mild, however it will not disinfect which you need to do to prevent breakouts. Wash your brushes gently in the liquid, rinse and lay on a towel with the hairs laying off the surface so that the air can circulate around them. Always try not to get the metal ferule wet as this is where the glue is.

TOP TOP TIP NEVER use use aa hairhairNEVER dryer or dishwasher dryer or dishwasher on your your brushes brushes or on or stand them upright stand them upright when wet. wet. when
