RAMADA MUSCAT

AL NASEEM camp

Arabian Oryx at Jiddat al Harasis

Al Wusta region, meaning the Central Area, is predominantly rock desert consisting of four wilayats (provinces). This region is the largest, yet the least populated, with the majority of the area taken up by Jiddat al Harasis - the Arabian Oryx Sanctuary. A part of UNESCO until 2009, the sanctuary was eventually reduced to ensure proper breeding of the Oryx, (which were hunted to near extinction before 1974), ran more efficiently and effectively. Al Buraimi is the sultanates newest governorate. Its history can be traced back to the strategic position it held at the intersection of various caravan routes to and from Oman. This small governorate is an oasis town and is therefore pleasantly green with a multitude of date palm plantations; there is also an extensive falaj system that keeps the region fertile. Buraimi also benefits from a cooler, less humid climate than the other regions, making it a popular destination during the summer months. Similar to the rest of the country, this governorate features many historic forts in varying condition. GENERAL INFORMATION For visas most nationalities can acquire a visit visa upon arrival, check the www.omantourism.gov.om website for more details. Climate December - March are the coolest months to visit the sultanate with the weather ranging from 16-30ºC during the day and 11-22ºC in the evenings. The sweltering summer months, June-September, can be relentless with the temperatures ranging from 25-50+ºC during the day and 19-35ºC at night. Currency The currency of Oman is the Omani Rial (OMR). Foreign currency and traveller’s cheques can be exchanged at banks, foreign exchange booths, hotels and at the airport. There are many ATM’s dotted around the city and all the main credit cards are readily accepted in the large shops, hotels and even by the souk traders. OMR1 = US$2.6 or EUR1.9 at the current exchange rate of the date of publishing. Time GMT +4 hours

Dialing code +968 Language Arabic is the official language. English is also widely spoken. Opening hours Friday is the Muslim holy day. The private sector tends to take Friday and Saturday off and the government departments and public sectors take Thursday and Friday off. Shopping hours are usually from 10am – 1pm, 4pm – 9pm for independent stores and from 10am – 10pm for shops in malls, except on Fridays when most do not open until 2pm or 4pm. Banking hours are typically from 8am – 2pm, Sunday – Wednesday. Post Offices are typically open from 8am – 2pm, Saturday – Wednesday and from 8am – noon on Thursdays.
