This month’s winner:
Geogy Dear Tech team, I was able to get a copy of your magazine through my friend. I was really amazed by the contents. It was an ocean of information. This is really great and I hope each of your forthcoming issues will have something interesting in store. My question is - How is it that some DVDs/VCDs play in particular players while not in others? Regards Geogy
Dear Geogy, Thank you for your kind words and we will definitely keep every successive magazine as interesting as possible. As for your question – whether the DVD or CD plays on a player depends on the type of disk you are using, the compatibility of the disk with the player and in some cases the region of the player. If you are planning on using writable disks, firstly take note of the type of disk you will be using and next see if the player can read them. All details for these will be available in the player’s manual. In the case of DVDs, most disks are region specific and will only work on players that can play that particular region. There are six regions in total and the number will almost always be available on both the case and box of the disk and player respectively. -Ed
First of all let me congratulate you on your magazine which is a real hit among electronics savvy people. It provides a one stop shop for all the necessary information required. The TECH directory in particular is very useful. Please continue the good work. I have a query – I have been seeing advancements in technology and am particularly impressed with the way TVs have advanced over the last few years. We went from normal TVs to flat screens, then to Slim TVs followed by LCDs and Plasmas and now we have LED Series from Samsung and other major players. While we have OLEDs too, they are proving to be a little costly. I would like to know the difference between the various TVs and what improvement can we expect in future. Thanks, K.R. Anand
Dear Anand, Thank you for your feedback, it is greatly appreciated. In regards to your query – if you have a look at the buyer’s guide of our September issue you will find most of your question answered. As far as OLEDs are concerned, they are the future of in-house entertainment. They, like plasmas, do not use backlights and offer the best colour reproduction, brightness and contrast of any TV. As you rightly mentioned they are currently extremely expensive but it is only a matter of time before they become more cost effective to produce. -Ed

Ironic accident Joining the ranks of other people killed by their own creations, Jimi Heselden, 62, the current owner of Segway, died this month after he rode a Segway off a cliff and into a river in England. Jimi Heselden was found at 11.40am on September 26 by the River Wharfe in North Yorkshire, with his X2 Adventure by his side. Police believe that it was just a freak accident, with nothing suspicious about the man worth USD262mn falling to his death. It appeared that he accidentally drove over a cliff into the river. Members of his family, many of whom paid an emotional visit to the scene of the accident this afternoon, described their grief at Mr Heselden’s death.
Oman gets the ASX The All-New 2011 Mitsubishi ASX Crossover has officially been launched in the Middle East by the Zubair Automotive Group and MMC Japan representatives at an exclusive press conference hosted at the Grand Hyatt Hotel. The new ASX (Active Sports Crossover) has all the features you would expect from Mitsubishi, but condensed into a more compact form. The ASX delivers superior interior comfort with luxury features such as USB and audio jack, allowing you to connect your MP3 player, iPod or Bluetooth hands-free kit with voice activated dialler. The ASX also has additional environmentally friendly improvements not seen on any other SUV, such as its greater use of recycled materials, highly efficient and clean MiVEC engine and class leading aerodynamic styling. The new car features plenty of interior room comfortably seating five adults while still providing a huge cargo space of 384l. The tailgate is wide enough to provide ample space for even the bulkiest items and the low floor height makes moving heavy cargo in and out far easier. The driving quality has been given a high priority, with its ergonomically designed cockpit, the easy to read liquid crystal multi information display, use of Mitsubishi’s Innovative Valve-timing Electronic Control (MiVEC) engine and the 12 / TECH
smoothness of a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) gearbox. Powered by an already proven two-litre MiVEC engine that develops 150hp and combined with a 6-speed gearbox, this sporty car offers maximum torque of 197nM at 4200rpm with a top speed of 190km/h. The ASX comes with a choice of either 2WD or 4WD, the latter coming with Mitsubishi’s renowned electronically controlled 4WD system using one centrally located dial to switch between three driving modes – either the fuel efficient 2WD, 4WD AUTO or 4WD LOCK. Therefore by simply moving one dial you can easily venture from the shopping malls out into Oman’s rugged interior.
Mr Heselden made his fortune when his Leeds-based firm Hesco Bastion developed the ‘blast wall’ basket, which protected soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq, as a replacement for traditional sandbags. Last year he led a British team which bought the US-based Segway firm, which makes and distributes the distinctive two-wheeled, self-balancing scooters. Mr Heselden was as well-known for his charity giving as he was for his massive fortune, and tributes poured in for him from various sectors. He made a GBP10mn donation to set up the Hesco Bastion Fund. He then went on to donate a further GBP13mn to the fund, which supports local projects in east and south Leeds, major health initiatives and Army-linked projects. Our condolences go out to his family and friends.
Fitting Tribute The C-X75’s 580kW propulsion system combines powerful 145kW (195bhp) electric motors at each wheel for outstanding performance. At the centre of the car sits state-of-the-art, mid-mounted micro gas-turbines. These can either generate 140kW (188bhp) to charge the batteries and extend the range of the car to a remarkable 900km (560 miles) – enough to drive from London to Berlin on a single tank – or when in Track mode provide supplementary power directly to the electric motors. The four electric motors provide torque-vectored, allwheel drive traction and grip, essential in a car that produces 580kW (778bhp) and 1600Nm (1180lb ft) of torque.
The C-X75 concept is both a celebration of 75 years of iconic Jaguar design and a look into the future of automotive technology. Designed as a range-extended electric two-seater supercar, it explores the outer limits of both performance and sustainability. With plug-in capability the car can achieve a zero tailpipe emissions range of 110km (68 miles) – three times round Paris’s Péripherique – when running under battery power alone, plus a potential top speed of 330km/h (205mph) and blistering acceleration. The car demonstrates that it is possible to retain Jaguar’s core values of performance, design and luxury using technology that will make environmentally responsible performance and electric vehicles a practical proposition.

Terabit-trunk power Brocade has unveiled the new Brocade MLXe Core Router as part of the Brocade MLX Series of high-density routers. The new MLXe routers provide superior 100GbE price/performance value to help generate greater revenue streams with a future-ready infrastructure. The breakthrough performance levels enable next-generation virtualised data centres to support rising application traffic demands and deliver cloud-based services using less hardware, improving operational efficiency. To protect existing network infrastructure investments, the new Brocade MLXe routers are fully interoperable with and support all existing Brocade MLX and Brocade NetIron XMR blades. Delivering four times the 100GbE wire-speed density and nine times the
system capacity of competing routers, the Brocade MLXe 15.36 Terabits per second (Tbps) fabric helps ensure greater simplicity with significantly less infrastructure and operational overhead. It can also transport dramatically more traffic on a single routing platform. When installed in the Brocade MLXe routers, the new 100GbE blades enable service providers to deploy the industry’s first Terabit-per-second trunk, which utilises multiple ports in a single logical link for greater bandwidth and reduced management. This technology supports the streaming of a half-million highdefinition video streams over a single managed connection.

Soundly Beautiful Maintaining the well-known outstanding sound performance and their stylish, elegant appearance, BeoLab 6000 and BeoLab 8000 are now available with ICEpower amplifiers of 2x125 watts, new, cutting-edge driver units and a reduced cooling grill thanks to the ICEpower amplification
Bang & Olufsen’s coveted and recently updated BeoLab 6000 and BeoLab 8000 line-ups, along with the new BeoLab 11, combine excellent bass performance and design while offering unorthodox placement possibilities
A manual position switch placed in the socket panel of both loudspeakers allows adjustment of the loudspeaker performance according to the placement in the room and enables users to easily switch between corner, wall or free-standing position
With this update the names of the two column speakers have changed to BeoLab 6002 and BeoLab 8002 respectively 28 / TECH
For BeoLab 6000, a design change has also been made on the surface of the foot, which is now sunpolished aluminium to match the Bang & Olufsen TV stands it is placed close to
Unlike most subwoofers BeoLab 11 has a variety of placement options designed to adorn your wall or sit discreetly on the floor
Due to the omni-directional properties of the bass, the performance is not dependent upon orientation; therefore the unit can be ‘rotated’ as desired when positioned on the floor
With a selection of beautiful colours and finishes it not only integrates into just about any interior, but will look great doing so
BeoLab 11 is a new small subwoofer from Bang & Olufsen that delivers amazing bass quality for its size
The subwoofer provides a significant addition to the bass experience in any small to medium loudspeaker setup, adding low frequencies from 125Hz and down Utilising the Acoustic Balance Principle for the first time in a Bang & Olufsen subwoofer, BeoLab 11 features uncompromising bass performance with minimal vibrations
With BeoLab 11 you get a richer sound not only in the bass area but also in the other frequency areas as it takes over smaller loudspeakers’ reproduction of the lower frequencies — this means that all capacity in the smaller speakers can be used to handle upper bass, midrange and treble
The BeoLab 11 is composed of two identical loudspeaker cabinets with baffles facing each other while the outer shells are made of aluminium
The concept is based on two 6.5-inch drivers with electronics, making BeoLab 11 fully active and suited for both Bang & Olufsen and third party applications Oct ‘10 / 29

In commemoration of the 25th Anniversary of BMW’s Forschung und Technik, here are seven of the craziest and most important concepts to come out of the illustrious design house
The BMW Group owes its status as the world’s most successful manufacturer of premium automobiles to an outstanding development team that operates within in all areas relevant to driving pleasure, sustainability and safety. This division, called BMW Forschung und Technik GmbH, operates as a subsidiary of BMW Group. To celebrate its 25th anniversary BMW has decided to unveil its best kept secrets; some of
Z1
One of the first projects to be launched by the fledgling subsidiary company was the prototype for a BMW Z1 Coupé developed in 1988. This vehicle project was intended to trial innovative materials, launch a revolutionary bodywork concept
40 / TECH
the most unusual concept vehicles ever created over the last quarter of a century. Established in 1985 as ‘BMW Technik’, the subsidiary went into business with a mission to develop innovative, future-oriented ‘concept’ vehicles. Researchers operated within the framework of this ‘think tank’ to develop concepts for individual mobility in tomorrow’s
and highlight opportunities for optimising development processes, and that it did. With its plastic body, vertical sliding doors and fascinating handling properties, the BMW Z1 was not simply the first milestone in the history of BMW Technik GmbH, it
world. As a result this division has been responsible for some of the most successful BMW vehicles ever produced. The company was rebranded in 2003 as BMW Forschung und Technik GmbH, to reflect both research and technology sides of the business. The focus was shifted to developing technologies as well as concepts that encompassed all types of BMW vehicles not just its concept vehicles.
also made its mark as an exceptional phenomenon on the road. Created within the framework of a concept, the BMW Z1 later paved the way for the BMW Z3, Z4 and Z8 sports cars that went into production.
E1
Recognising the importance of alternative fuel sources perhaps one of the most advanced and exciting concepts to come out of BMW Technik nearly 20 years ago was the BMW E1. The BMW E1 created in 1991 had an electric motor mounted in the rear. Today, the BMW E1 is regarded as the launch pad for holistic development of electro-mobility concepts in the BMW Group. The BMW E1 provided a range of up to 200kms and a top speed of
120km/h. The prototype generated universal acclaim among members of the public and independent testers
and was even named by respected motoring journal, ‘Auto Bilad’, as the most advanced car of the century.
Z18
The yearning to explore off-road terrain and the pleasure of mobility under the open skies was explored in 1995 for the first time on four wheels through the BMW Z18 concept. This was the first off-road roadster developed by BMW and had an eight-cylinder engine, four-wheel drive and elevated seating which characterised the innovative driving experience in the robust roadster.
Z21 or Just 4/2 Another prototype that offered the prospect of driving fun while having previously been confined to motorcycles captivated the driving public as early as 1995 at the Tokyo Motor Show in Japan. Called the BMW Z21 and later coined BMW Just 4/2 due to freestanding wheels, a body that abandoned roof and windscreen,
it had a rear-mounted four-cylinder engine packing 100hp. The two-seater accelerated from a standing start to 100km/h in around six seconds and notched up a top speed of 180km/h. Oct ‘10 / 41
Z22 The BMW Z22 was among the most sophisticated technology platforms that BMW Technik GmbH has ever created. Presented in 1999, it combined 70 innovations and 61 registered inventions in areas ranging across body concept, lightweight construction, power unit, safety, mechanical systems and controls. Power steering, an electromechanical braking system, cameras instead of wing and rear mirrors, and a cockpit design reduced to the bare essentials defined the mould-breaking, futureproof character of the BMW Z22. As early as 1999, Adaptive headlights, Head-up Display including a central control unit enabled this prototype to offer a futuristic view of technologies that would later become a standard in the ‘Series’ vehicles.
Z29 Two years after the Z22 the Z29, a prototype of a two-seater sports car, was completed by BMW Technik GmbH and represented the culmination of cooperation with another world-leading subsidiary of the BMW Group – BMW M GmbH.
42 / TECH
The passenger cell of the vehicle was manufactured from carbon-fibre reinforced plastic while the rear axle and front and rear module were designed in aluminium. Perhaps the most important result of this combination
was the weight-to-power ratio of 3.4kg/hp and an acceleration ratio of 4.4 seconds for the sprint from a standing start to 100km/h.
H2R By 2004 BMW Technick GmbH had added ‘Forschung’ to its name which gave birth to the awesome BMW H2R vehicle powered by a twelvecylinder engine. This concept vehicle added nine international records
for hydrogen-powered vehicles with a piston engine at the BMW test track in Miramas, France. The car achieved a top speed of more than 300km/h. This enabled BMW Forschung und Technik GmbH to
pave the way to make significant progress not just in vehicle concepts but also other areas of increasing importance for BMW Group - its Efficient Dynamics strategy.
The Team Cooperative research ensures that the departments responsible for subsequent series development can be integrated within the relevant project at an early stage.
Experts that work within BMW Forschung und Technik GmbH enjoy a high degree of creative freedom which allows them to take innovative approaches and look for unconventional solutions to solve the challenges of today and tomorrow. They make use of diverse sources of inspiration which can range from bionics to space engineering, and they develop perspectives on the future that extend far beyond the life cycle of a vehicle model.
This approach guarantees that operations for realisation are already being monitored during the research phase. The initiators of an innovation also support their project after it has been transferred to the pre-production and series development phase. BMW Forschung und Technik GmbH currently employees 200 people at the Munich office, and includes a team of experts in the areas of vehicle engineering, hydrogen technologies, alternative drive and energy management concepts, active safety and driver assistance systems, as well
as information and communication technologies. The division also operates two offices in the USA and enjoys a close relationship with universities such as Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. There is also a programme with extensive exchange of ideas with universities and research institutes in Germany and throughout Europe.

Ascending precision Experience aerospace-grade handset casings with Vertu’s new Ascent Vertu’s latest in luxury mobile phones, Ascent, has been inspired by icons of power, speed, performance and technologies such as stealth and uses designs
and features to complement your fast-paced lifestyle. In line with its design and inspiration, the illustrious company uses aerospace grade aluminium in the engineering of the
The casings of the aluminium model are heat-treated in a process known as precipitation hardening, producing microscopic changes in the aluminium which can double the strength of the alloy; and the parts are then anodised — a process which transforms the surface, creating a layer five times harder than the raw material
The engine in the Ascent offers quad-band 3G and GSM network coverage and comes equipped with Assisted GPS technology and preloaded worldwide maps covering more than 190 countries
Intelligent and precise time-keeping technology also ensures that the clock is adjusted to the local time of the phone’s location; wherever in the world the phone is connected to a network and when abroad, the clock always displays an origin location time
A nine-stage forging process is used to create the titanium casing, with the majority of these stages involving heating the metal to 860 degrees before applying 630 tonnes of pressure to mould the material
The Ascent features a high-quality, 5MP camera with sapphire crystal lens protection and forced auto-focus for optimum clarity
The Ascent aluminium model has 8GB internal memory, whereas the titanium has 32GB, providing more than enough storage for photographs and video footage

Space-age performance Unveiled just a few months ago, the Galaxy S is by far one of the most advanced phones that Samsung has launched. But how does it stack up against the stiff competition from other Android offerings
Look and feel There is no denying that the Galaxy S is a great looking phone. Its front is adorned by a large four-inch display, two touchsensitive buttons and a sole centre button. The rest of the phone is made of high quality plastic and the back is adorned with blue dots, which may not be to everyone’s liking. At 122.4x64.2mm the phone isn’t exactly small but will easily fit into your pocket and at just 9.9mm thickness and a weight of 118g it is light and easy to handle. Overall, the Galaxy S looks and feels quite sturdy and the general ergonomics are perfectly fine. While we have seen better finish on other Samsung phones and some users, especially those with smaller hands, might find it awkward to handle a screen this size, it will all be forgiven once you turn the phone on.
Hardware and functionality Underneath its suave exterior and slim body beats the heart of a 1GHz ARM Cortex A8 processor (aka Hummingbird). It has 8GB of internal memory and 512MB RAM. Should the internal space not suffice, you can expand it using MicroSD cards. While these are hot swappable you can access them once you peel off the back cover. Outside of the regular features such as an accelerometer and multi-touch you get a front facing camera for video calling and a 5MP rear camera for photography. While this camera may not be the best of the breed when it comes to photography it is right up there with the best when it comes to video recording, which is done in 720p at 30fps. But the lack of any sort of flash makes night-time snapping almost impossible. In terms of connectivity you get the entire package – GPRS, EDGE, 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and even DLNA. 48 / TECH
Ease of use The combination of Samsung’s Touchwiz overlay and Android 2.1 makes Galaxy S one of the most intuitive phones on the market today. On the home screen you have seven panes to swipe through and customise with widgets of your choice. Taking into account the widgets available from Samsung in addition to those available from the Android market you will have more than enough to customise the panes with. At the bottom of all screens sit four permanent shortcut buttons. The rightmost is the Applications/home button which alternates the main menu and the home screen, and the other three can be changed with whatever icon you desire. Performance is also top-notch since the Hummingbird processor used in the Galaxy S is one of the fastest mobile processors available on the market today and even has a slight edge over its Snapdragon competitor. As such, lags are very rare on the phone and will never prove to be a hindrance. Calling on the phone is also a breeze and the quality of the audio is excellent, be it for calling or using the music player. Messaging, connecting to a network, working the file browser or anything else for that matter is simple, intuitive and done with the minimal of effort. If there was anything to complain it would have to be that the loudspeaker is a bit weak, the FM is only mono and the phone is a fingerprint magnet, but to be honest this is just nitpicking and doesn’t really compromise the performance in any way.
Available at: SARCO, 24795503
Conclusion The Display To most, the display will be the deciding factor for this phone, and we have no reason to argue against that for the simple reason that it’s gorgeous. The primary reason for the phone’s slim waist is its new Super AMOLED screen which gets rid of the covering glass on other such screens, vastly improving its sunlight legibility and viewing angles while still retaining all the
colour and contrast of a regular AMOLED screen. The screen loses almost none of its quality even in broad daylight and its viewing angles are near perfect. And because the phone utilises a capacitive touch screen, even the lightest of taps is enough for the phone to respond. To put it simply, this is by far the best screen we have ever seen on a phone.
While the Galaxy S is a bit of a latecomer to the Android family of phones, it has made the wait well worth it. There are a few minor omissions in terms of design, and the build quality may not be the best Samsung has to offer but these do not affect the phone’s core performance in any way. It also doesn’t come cheap (OMR249.900) but considering what is on offer it is competitively priced and is by far the best Android packages we have seen and may even be the best smartphones you can get on the market today. Can five Spartans fill the boots of the almighty Master Chief? We spent hours on end playing Halo: Reach to find the answer
W
hen it was first launched, Halo redefined the FPS genre and online multiplayer forever and was the ‘Killer App’ of Microsoft’s Xbox. Over the course of the past nine years the game has spawned two direct sequels, one offshoot 50 / TECH
story that ran alongside Halo 3, a RTS and a number of novels, action figures, comics and more. The franchise has sold over 34mn game copies worldwide and grossed over USD1.7bn, easily placing it among the top-tier of successful videogame IPs. Now Bungie, the company behind the
trilogy and ODST (not the RTS – Halo Wars), has finally delivered its final game in the franchise before it goes multi-platform – Halo: Reach. Just prior to the launch of the first game in 2001, a novel written by Eric Nylund called ‘Halo: the fall of
Reach’ introduced players to the Halo universe and set up the back story that led to the introduction of Master Chief and the incidents that took place in the trilogy. In Halo: Reach you finally get to experience this story first hand as you take to the battlefield filling in the shoes of the mysterious Spartan, simply called Noble 6. As the latest addition to the Noble Team, you and your Spartan squad mates are assigned to counter the newly discovered Covenant threat and try to rescue Reach from its inevitable demise. A strong story and near-flawless pacing of the campaign has always been a hallmark of the franchise and the same is true for Reach, albeit with a slightly more depressing tone. There is a persistent sense of dread and despair throughout the course of the campaign. This stems from the fact that despite all your efforts you will be unable to prevent the destruction of Reach. It is the expected twists and turns and relentless pace of the story that will draw your interest. Also, your fellow Spartans are put forward to be far more human this time round, even removing their helmets on occasion, drawing you deeper into the tale. Boot the game for the first time and
you are taken to the character customisation screen to change the gender and look of your protagonist. Playing through the game, either the campaign or multiplayer, nets you points which you can use to purchase more parts. While these may just be cosmetic, they offer a sense of personality and immersion into the game especially since they affect the way your character looks even in the campaign. At the very least they work as trophies to showcase your dedication to the game. If you are familiar with any of the previous games in the franchise, you
will feel instantly at home in Halo Reach’s campaign. It follows a similar pattern of moving from skirmish to skirmish with occasional plot points in between with barely any down time at all. Unfortunately, this also works out to be one of
the largest flaws with the game. While the pacing is great and the story and characters are
intriguing, the enemy variations and mission variety are limited and there are barely any set-piece moments making the campaign’s combat seem a bit monotonous. It does have some redeeming factors in the form of extremely creative and vast level design, quite unlike the corridor gameplay of the previous games, barring ODST. This allows for good squad-based tactics and flanking opportunities. Just don’t expect your AI teammates to drop a lot of Covenants since they seem to be lacking in the AI department. On the other hand, the enemy Oct ‘10 / 51
magnum pistol has been returned to its former glory. Even the Firefight mode from ODST makes a return alongside an improved Forge mode, which actually feels like overkill given the amount of content and flexibility already at your disposal.
AI is brilliant and can be downright brutal on the higher difficulties. The former problem can be solved if you have a few friends to join you but if you are going at it alone use your squad as nothing more than a distraction to the enemy. Either way, whether you like the campaign or not, it’s more like a bonus feature to what you have truly brought this game for – its multiplayer. Aside from the bevy of multiplayer modes that were carried over from Halo 3, there is stockpile, a more frantic variation on capture the flag which handles multiple flags at once, and generator defence, where a team of Spartans defend a generator from a team of covenant. While this may not seem like much, you have to keep in mind that Halo 3’s list of modes was nothing to scoff at and the sheer number of customisable options in Reach’s multiplayer suite borders on endless. Games start off once the type of match is selected. Once in the lobby, players get a chance to vote on game type and map and once in the game you even get t to choose from a set of predefined starting loadouts which offers far more 52 / TECH
flexibility than the default loadouts from the previous games. To add to its already meaty content, you have a host of new weapons, vehicles and about nine maps to choose from. The new weapons are a case of hit-ormiss, with some being a bit too over powered in matches, everyone will be glad to know that the
In terms of gameplay not much has changed, but what has makes a significant impact on the way you approach battles. For starters, you no longer have to worry about collecting disposables. These have been replaced with armour abilities which can be infinitely reused so long as they are charged and ready. While these are of not much use in the campaign, unless played on the harder difficulties, they have a huge impact in multiplayer and depending on how
effectively they are used can be the deciding factor in matches. Dualwielding has also been dropped in favour of more tactical combat and melee damage has been greatly toned down. As if

not many improvements in enemy variety, lack of setpiece moments in campaign
to compensate for this you can now execute an assassination if you can effectively sneak up on an enemy. While this can guarantee a kill its animation takes too long and more often than not it will leave you for dead. Even the campaign has not been left untouched. In addition to all that we have mentioned in the multiplayer, there are also newer and tougher variations of the existing covenant enemies. Even regular enemy variants have been beefed up to take more punishment before they go down. This has been balanced out by the new health and shield system that Reach introduces. Alongside the
rechargeable shields that we are familiar with, the health metre also recharges partially and what’s lost can be replenished via health canisters strewn across the levels. Graphics were never a strong point for the franchise. In fact Halo 3 was borderline disappointing and ODST didn’t do much to fix this. This time round though, a lot more effort has gone into improving them. Textures are a lot more detailed as are the character models and environments. Weapons effects have been greatly enhanced and there are lots more enemies on screen making battles more frantic. Despite all these improvements there has been no hit to
date, with a decent campaign and an outstanding multiplayer suite. It is the best evolution of a franchise that we have seen so far and as it stands will be the last game in the franchise to be developed by Bungie. If so, it is definitely a fitting swan song as the company says farewell to the franchise.

Profane yet humane Kick-Ass is not all about putting on a mask and helping people
K
ick-Ass is a blend of comicbook violence, profanity and sweet emotion, which is becoming a popular culture in Hollywood these days. Directed by Matthew Vaughn and written by Jane Goldman and Vaughn, the movie was not just based on a comic by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr, but made at the same time the original was being created. As the series and script were written at the same time, the film was pitched to all the major studios but they passed on it. They thought the subject matter was too much of a risk, although a lot of comic-book-turnedmovies have been well received by the superhero-loving audience of Hollywood. Finally Vaughn and Millar decided to fund this movie themselves, giving them the advantage of working outside the studio system. Kick-Ass is the original vision of the director and writer, as they didn’t have anybody telling them what to change. But there have been subtle changes in the characters of Katie Deauxma (Lyndsy Fonseca), the girl our superhero falls for, and also Chris D’Amico aka Red Mist (played by Christopher MintzPlasse). There has been a lot more emphasis on the character’s emotions in the movie. But the most important change of all is the climax, which differs significantly from the comic. The movie is equal parts disturbing and alluring, especially with the presence of a 12-year-old prodigy of violence named Mindy Macready aka Hit Girl, played by Chloe Grace Moretz. Moretz’ role as Hit Girl eclipses every other actor on the set.
No one could have expected to see a girl like this in any comic-book movie or any other film for that matter. Her on-screen presence and acting will be remembered for quite a while, as will the interesting soundtrack that accompanies her onslaught. The movie revolves around Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson) who wonders why nobody wants to become a superhero. Dave understands that his only superpower “was being invisible to girls”. And all he wants to do is put on a mask and help people. To bring a story to life the actors need to become the character they are playing. And Aaron Johnson’s portrayal of KickAss will bring him to the attention of Hollywood. Although the movie starts off funny, with Dave trying on a green wetsuit and kicking his way through petty criminals, he ends up getting hurt, for lack of any fighting skills whatsoever. But then events conspire to make Kick-Ass an Internet phenomenon and Dave ends up fighting all kinds of bad guys who start to strike back. As most action movies go, it is all about revenge. The good-cop-
gone-bad can be ascribed to Damon Macready aka Big Daddy (played by Nicolas Cage), while at the other end of the spectrum sits D’Amico (Mark Strong) and his henchmen, the people responsible for the death of his wife. Although it is disturbing to see Damon school young Mindy in the way of the gun, he does so not out of cynicism but in a gesture of protection and empowerment. The director balances Damon and Mindy’s relationship with moments of captivating warmth. And although Nicolas Cage’s live action career has taken a plunge of late, with disasters like Next and Knowing, his role as Damon Macready aka Big Daddy is his best performance since Adaptation in 2002. When KickAss meets Hit Girl for the first time, swords are flying around. She goes through the entire room dispatching thugs with a butterfly knife and a pair of swords. F-bombs and butterfly knives notwithstanding, Hit Girl winds up being less a model of social corrosion than a reassuring image of young female self-reliance. Kick-Ass is worth watching as long as you are not too carried away with comic-book violence. And the movie has found a perfect balance of humour, profanity, violence and sentiment.
