TW51 WEEK 27.indb 3
There was a time when using your PC was pretty much a solo pursuit, but the latest technology is ushering in a brand new era in family computing with the latest amazing, vibrant touchscreens, some phenomenal software and fascinating new way to interact, the whole concept of the computer is changing. Take something like Lenovo’s IdeaPad Horizon Table PC that brings an entirely different experience, one that the entire family can enjoy. The huge 27inch touchscreen PC can operate, as an amazing All-in-one, giving you a traditional computing experience with all the bells and whistles that Windows 8 provides. That means it becomes a fantastic media centre for your home, brings the speed and efficiency of touch applications, just like you are used to dealing with on your phone or tablet, but also the convenience of a proper keyboard and mouse for those times when you need to get serious.
The Horizon Table PC really comes alive when you lay it flat by pushing down its specially constructed kickstand, giving you a table-top PC that will provide hours of fun for all the family. The modern world means that computers are not just omnipresent, but also beginning to be used in some fascinating and exciting ways. The IdeaCentre Horizon Table is a great example of this and what makes it even better is that this ushers in a new era of family computing, allowing groups to sit around together rather than limiting the PC to just one person. It couldn’t get more fun.

Huawei makes its debut in Oman’s retail markets
‘harman house’ opens two more stores in Oman ‘harman house,’ the retail chain in home, professional and car infotainment in the Middle East, has announced the opening of its new showroom in Muscat, Oman as part of its current bid to expand its presence across the Middle East region. The new retail outlet was opened in partnership with Genetco. The two new showrooms, of which one is located at the first floor of Muscat City Centre, Seeb and the second in Qurum AlAraimi complex, was inaugurated by Khalil Bin Abdullah Al Konji, President of the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI).
Huawei, a global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, has announced a new partnership with and ABT, a professional managed retail, wholesale, trading and distribution company in Oman, which will see Huawei’s full range of consumer handset devices now available to the public for the first time ever on the open market in Oman. While Huawei’s range of consumer electronics that include smartphones, tablets, and mobile WiFi devices had been available previously through telecom operators, the partnership with ABT will see Huawei aim to gain a larger market share in the Sultanate by offering its products directly and indirectly to consumers. As part of Huawei’s push into the Oman retail sector, the company also confirmed the local availability of its premium smartphone devices the Ascend P2 and the Ascend Mate, the world’s largest smartphone with a 6.1-inch screen. Huawei’s main ‘Ascend’ smartphone line spans four different product series including a Youth, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond class which each offer a unique technology package to consumers at a variety of different price points. Such devices are set to appear on retail shelves immediately and will include placement in popular outlets throughout the Sultanate.
Also present during the opening were M.A. Fadavi, Managing Director, Harman Middle East; Murtadha Hassan Ali Al Lawati, Chairman, Genetco; Dr Muthanna Al Durrah , CEO, Genetco and Amit Malani, President, Harman Middle East in the presence of top officials from ‘harman house’ and Genetco . BMI forecasts that Oman’s per capita consumer electronics spend will reach USD 309 by 2017. TV sets account for more than half of all AV revenue, with flat-screen TV sets being the main driver of AV category sales growth over the forecast period.

We are confident that the diverse range of products that ‘harman house’ offers will be able to address this demand,” concluded Dr Muthanna Al Durrah, CEO, Genetco.

Battle of the platforms T
We take a look at the mobile operating system that is predicted to make it big this year he battle for dominance of the smartphone world is one that has been raging for a few years. With the migration of consumers from feature phones to modern wonders such as the iPhone 5 and the HTC One, or even the more economical chips offerings like the Nokia Lumia 520 or
Huawei Ascend G330, it is clear where the money and the future lies.
We’ve seen some impressive hardware come and go, quad-cores grace most flagship devices (Sony Xperia Z or HTC One) and there is even the quad/octa core that sits inside the Samsung Galaxy S4,
dependent on your location. Needless to say, all the big guns in the tech industry have some level of input into the mobile OS world. Apple has iOS (just about to reach iOS 7), Google has Android, the most recent version being 4.2 Jelly Bean, Microsoft has Windows Phone 8, leaving BlackBerry with its hopes pinned on BB10.
iOS, Android, BB10 and Windows 8 home screens
Interface The iOS 7 interface is a radical new look compared with previous iterations. Although with a clean and modern new look, the formula based upon simplicity is one that has been stuck to. Icons have had an overhaul, and there is transparency through apps, giving iOS devices a more unified feel.
Android is currently sitting at version 4.2, which is another iteration of the popular Jelly Bean OS. Jelly Bean built upon the work done by 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, with everything being much smoother with ‘Project Butter’, and the introduction of Google Now. Microsoft’s offering bases itself around a system of ‘LiveTiles’. These are used in a similar way to widgets on Android, providing information at a quick glance. Users of Windows Phone 7, or Windows 8 on tablets or desktops will feel right at home. In terms of user customisation, much like iOS, Windows Phone 8 is relatively closed. Live Tiles can be resized, so that more important tiles can take up
more screen real estate, and the tile colour can be any of 20 variations. It is also possible to change the lock screen, to bring up photos, or widgets and notifications. BlackBerry is pinning all its hopes on the OS. In a similar way to Windows Phone 8, BB 10 allows 8 ‘Active Frames’, of which only 4 are visible at one time. Being a totally different OS to prior BlackBerry OS iterations, BB10 a little confusing to use at first. Closing apps by running your finger up from the bottom of the screen feeling a little unnatural. The BlackBerry 10 lock screen comes complete with notifications, calendar events and ability to quick launch the camera.
Notifications and Control Notifications are very important across devices, giving quick access to Calendar events, Emails and Text messages.
iOS notification centre
TW51 WEEK 27.indb 6
The Control Centre is where the real innovation lies, however. Previous iOS versions had a very basic centre, however now quick settings such as WiFi and Bluetooth can be enabled or disabled, as well as controlling screen brightness, music being played, and access to AirDrop
and AirPlay controls. Android has had its notifications bar longer than Apple, so it has come on in leaps and bounds. Jelly Bean also brings in expandable notifications, showing more information about the top event, as well as being able to swipe to dismiss. Notifications never made it to Windows Phone 8, however there are strong suggestions that there is a notifications
Android notification centre centre making it over in Windows Phone 8.1. With BB10, there is a dedicated Notifications hub, accessed by swiping from the left hand side of the screen, as well as notifications that can be seen for individual apps such as Email, Texts or social networks.

Camera
Multi-Tasking
With the Camera app being one of the most widely used features on the modern smartphone, it is only natural that every OS has given the camera a certain level of attention. One feature we are very fond of, that appears on iOS 7, pretty much every Android UI and BB10 is the ability to launch the app directly from the lock screen.
iOS7 brings more changes to the Multitasking window as well. No longer does a swipe from the bottom bring up recently used apps, but a newer interface that shows information from the app screen, as well as the app icons along the bottom.
iOS 7 brings in a raft of changes to the camera app. There isn’t a whole load of changes deep down, these being limited more to photo effects; varying lens shapes and live photo filters giving you the Instagram look, without having to use the app. Elsewhere, the interface has become more swipe-friendly.
Google’s multi-tasking has been handled for a long time through the long press of the home button, if the device has one, or through the dedicated button on total touch screen devices. This brings up a quick window of what was last on the app whilst you were using it, and can be swiped to dismiss. Windows Phone 8 has a similar method of bringing up its multitasking window.
Android’s camera app is one that’s the best. With the incredible variation in Android devices, each camera is different, the HTC One being most notable for camera tech with UltraPixel and HTC Zoe or there is Samsung with Burst Mode found on the Galaxy S3 or S4.
Blackberry has implemented a multitasking action that they call ‘Cascades’, accessed by swiping left to right. BB10 also uses the multi-tasking screen on the home page we mentioned earlier, that gives access to your eight most recently used apps, shown four at a time.
Blackberry, Android browsers
Browser The URL bar on iOS 7 safari is now resizable, you can swipe through the history, and the bookmarks and tabs have had an overhaul. Bookmarks now sit on the home screen, drawing in data from your Twitter feed. Tabbing is no longer limited to 8, and is synchronised across multiple Apple devices through iCloud.

Verdict
The iOS7 launch is arguably very important as Apple has been losing market shares. A number of previous devices will be getting the update, with the OS also being a major predecessor to the upcoming iPhone 5S or 6, iPad 5 and iPad Mini 2. Apple therefore has a very large existing customer base ready to upgrade, with those on earlier devices also potentially looking to the launches of the next line of products. iOS is also highly successful in the business market, as well as the personal market. It is therefore almost impossible to say that iOS7 will be a flop, after all the trouble that Apple maps gave iOS6, it is still very
Since Ice Cream Sandwich, Google has mobilised its Chrome browser, which now interestingly sits alongside the native Android Internet app. Google bookmarks can be synced across, and
popular. Android is Apple’s biggest worry, with Windows Phone 8 and BB10 making strides through the mobile market, yet still not as firmly established. Android handsets are still the most popular on a world wide scale, but only just over a third are actually running Jelly Bean, with the fragmentation the major negative point against what is a highly versatile platform.
incognito browsing is available too. Internet Explorer(IE) is available on Windows Phone 8 devices. IE is a very accomplished mobile browser overall and comes with the Do Not Track feature by default, as well as SmartScreen phishing protection. BB10’s browser is a minimalist design, with the URL at the bottom of the page, like the IE on Windows Phone 8. BB10 does pack in some useful features, such as a Reader mode that lifts text and images, making it more readable.
iOS7 might make it big, but it is only the first OS refresh launch. We still have to look forward to Windows Phone 8.1, Android 4.3 Jelly Bean and/or 5.0 Key Lime Pie likely to arrive later in 2013. If you think otherwise, please give us your opinion on facebook.com/ TECHOMAN

Google has been churning up its next version of Android Jelly Bean, iOS7 has all the reasons to watch out
TW51 WEEK 27.indb 7
The screenshots above, published by reliable Samsung gossip blog SamMobile, show Android 4.3 running on the Samsung GT-i9505G. That’s better known as the S4 Google Edition, the version of the S4 that runs pure Android, which the Big G has recently started selling in the US. The shots apparently come from a Samsung insider with access to an early build of the software while the Korean
company adapts it to run all the phone’s hardware. SamMobile’s source reckons the S4 Google Edition will be updated to 4.3 next month. The screenshots show that 4.3 is still called Jelly Bean, which other rumours have indicated too. That means it won’t be a drastic overhaul. What would you like to see from Android 4.3? Does it need more of an overhaul to compete with iOS7? Or do you think it’s way ahead of Apple’s effort already? Please share your thoughts with us on facebook.com/TECHOMAN

Game of Thrones: Season three
From top to bottom, opening sequence to end credits, season three of Game of Thrones has coaxed from 10 episodes, a story arc that successfully demonstrated how much the idea of ‘the realm’ means to the series’ overall narrative and how so many of show’s characters, whether they know it or not, are driven by similar concepts. While it lacked the devastating emotional impact of ‘The Rains of Castamere‘or’, the last ten minutes detailing the horrifically violent ‘Red Wedding’ it was the discussion between Varys and Littlefinger in ‘The Climb‘ that seems to have been the true turning point for the season, in terms of laying out precisely what it
is everyone is so up in arms about. To illustrate that while the land connecting these kingdoms may be vast, the realm is not so immeasurable that a single menace cannot threaten its very existence. For its part, ‘Mhysa’ doesn’t hesitate to get into the very notion that characters are oftentimes ruled by his or her devotion to an elusive thing or concept. Things like oaths, love, happiness, power, title and, most poignantly this season, a family name that means something and is, for the time being, sustainable. On one hand, there is Arya Stark‘s slaying of a soldier taking credit for mounting a dire wolf’s head on Robb

On the far side of the world, Game of Thrones cleverly and rather marvelously demonstrates a level of unity that’s largely unknown to the embattled kingdoms on the other side of the sea. But winter is still coming and with it comes unspeakable horror and almost certain death. As Davos argues, unless the kingdoms can rally together and unite against a common and mighty foe, there’ll soon be no realm for anyone to be fighting over.

Gorgeous storage Toshiba unveils its thinnest 1TB portable external hard drive, who knew storage could look so good
T
oshiba Gulf launches the STOR.ETM Slim at 1TB capacity, an extremely portable external hard drive that measures only 12.5mm thick, making it one of the thinnest and smallest in the market today. In addition, the STOR.ETM Slim also gives users the ability to access and share data with its 10GB of free cloud storage. It will be available in the market beginning July 2013.
Available in a special brushed aluminium black or silver, the STOR.ETM Slim is pre-formatted for Windows and comes with an NTFS driver for Mac, allowing users to store and access files from their PC and Mac without reformatting. A Mac version of STOR.ETM Slim is compatible with Apple’s Time Machine backup utility, and has a sophisticated design that complements Apple’ s style.
The innovative feature that sets the STOR.ETM Slim apart from competing products is the instant access it provides. Through Toshiba’s partnership with Pogoplug PC, users can conveniently access their important files by storing them in a 10GB cloud storage, which comes free with the product.
Backups
Users have the ability to access their files on the STOR.ETM Slim using their smartphone or tablet as long as the external hard drive is connected to a PC and WiFi environment. This feature is enabled when the PC is switched on or even when it is on a stand-by mode.
Design Winner of the red dot award for Product Design in 2013, the STOR.ETM Slim is a complete external backup and storage solution created especially for style-conscious consumers who demand highquality and fashionably sleek accessories to go with their UltrabooksTM or Macbooks.
The STOR.ETM Slim has a built-in USB 3.0 interface that significantly improves file transfer performance for large media files and minimises the waiting time for backups. It is also compatible with USB 2.0 devices. Easy to use, it comes with its own pre-loaded backup and sharing applications, eliminating the need to buy additional hardware or install extra software. The included NTI Backup Now EZ software scans the system and recommends the best backup solution. Users may choose between backing up files in the cloud, to the hard drive itself, to a chosen computer, or any of these. Customisation of file, folder and full system backups is also made possible on the STOR.ETM Slim. It can schedule automatic backups and is secured through password protection, guarding files against loss, theft and corruption.

Despicable Me 2 A new, powerful criminal has to be dealt with and Gru is recruited by the Anti-Villain League to bring him down

fter the success of Despicable Me, a popular 3D computer-animated adventure comedy film, it’s team decided to make it’s sequel. Produced by Illumination Entertainment and distributed by Universal Pictures, both films are directed by Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud and written by Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio. Steve Carell, Russell Brand and Miranda Cosgrove reprise their roles. Kristen Wiig, who played Miss Hattie in the first film, voices agent Lucy Wilde. New cast members include Benjamin Bratt
as Eduardo and Steve Coogan as Silas Ramsbottom, head of the Anti-Villain League. Gru, is now no longer a villain after having saved his three adopted daughters Margo, Edith and Agnes from rival super-villain Vector in the first film Despicable Me. Gru, while celebrating his youngest child’s birthday along with two of his minions are approached and kidnapped by Lucy Wilde, an Anti-Villain League agent, and taken to the underwater Anti-Villain League Headquarters, where they ask for Gru to become a ‘spy’ in order to track down a new super-villain who has stolen a research laboratory and a chemical compound that can transform lifeforms into invincible mutant killing machines.
admits she was impressed by his work as a villain, stating that stealing the Moon was amazing, before giving him her phone number and urging him to contact her if his mind changes. Upon his return, Dr. Nefario confesses to Gru that he misses being ‘evil’ and has been offered employment elsewhere. Nefario then leaves Gru and his minions. This prompts Gru to contact Lucy and take the job. He works undercover in a mall as a runner of a cupcake shop, as the chemical has been tracked to the mall. As the story unfolds, it only gets more hilarious and fun. This is one of the animation movies we are really looking forward to.

WEEK 27, juLY 4 - 10, 2013
As a real time strategy game, this game seems a lot better than the original 2006 version
Publisher: SEGA Genre: Strategy Developer: Relic Entertainment Platforms: PC ESRB Rating: Mature

R
elic Entertainment’s Company of Heroes 2 is said to feel much like the original 2006 title that added considerable depth to the real-time strategy genre, which was becoming bogged down by resource gathering titles. Company of Heroes emphasised the idea that objectives matter and incentivised
players to battle over key map positions instead massing forces and aiming for base destruction victories. There was a focus on unit-to-unit interaction and a heavy focus on location and position. Company of Heroes 2 does nothing to revolutionise or expand the genre as players move to the Eastern Front, but it does improve on many aspects of the original title.
RTS games live and die by their multiplayer implementation and Company of Heroes 2 succeeds admirably here. For competitive players, there is a matchmaking system that blows the rather ordinary multiplayer options found in the original title away, offering players games of 1v1 to 4v4 at the click of a button. Ideally, players looking for co-op and objective based
PVE experiences have a new feature entirely here with the Theatre of War. There are single player challenges, co-op battles, and other content that isn’t taking on other players. If you’re not familiar with what Company of Heroes is all about, there are lots of inspired troops shouting wartime witticisms, grenades, tanks and rockets. Games are won and lost by controlling points of interest scattered around the battlefield as things escalate from ground infantry combat to airstrikes and massive tank incursions. The improvements to multiplayer matchmaking and the addition of a coop mode make Company of Heroes 2 a clear winner for those that enjoyed the original title. It’s difficult to say just what kind of position the RTS genre is in right now as the PC environment becomes entrenched with free-to-play offerings and MOBAs filling space previously occupied by the genre that spawned them. Company of Heroes 2 is a “refreshing reboot” with many essential changes that call out crucial multiplayer components, but don’t expect any exciting new gameplay features.
