“YES IS MORE

Summary A minimalist designer with an ability to apply creativity in order to design , visualize and fabricate; appealing yet functional design in projects that engage emotions and connect with users. Architecture is a field that is extremely fascinating to me. I have this innate desire to explore how it is possible for science and technology to enhance the overall performance of buildings in both social and environmental architecture, and how it is introduced me to dichotomy of my own personality, enabling me to engage in both creative and scientific aspects, as well as its aesthetic and functional designs.

I have personally experienced art and architecture from the diversity of culture through the exploration and travel, emphasizing the limitless technology and infinite possibilities that are found in architecture, art and design. I believe architecture is not only a skill but a style of living; a combination of creativity and imagination. I read quite extensively, understood the architectural history and significance of different cultures, learnt from works of modern and contemporary architects. I possess a wide range of abilities and combine innovative art and design principles. I believe I can make valuable contributions to the design team.

REDEVELOPMENT ALONG THE LAKEFRONT

ARCHITECTURAL THESIS (Ongoing) , VIIITH SEMESTER ACADEMIC WORK BHOJ LAKE, BHOPAL, MADHYA PRADESH

REMEMBERING OUR PAST “ARCHITECTURE + URBAN DESIGN” Different cities have different identities. Some cities have tragic identities which are needed to be preserved for upcoming generations. But to enliven

the history, one should know about the context of history and present scenarios. A deep study is needed to be done so as one can get the idea the people of city have suffered in the past and survived it.

City of Bhopal famous for it’s beautiful lakes is most commonly known as the city that saw the worst industrial man mad disaster ever ‘The Bhopal Gas tragedy”

This thesis shall be an attempt to commemorate the past, cure the present and caution the future through an architectural intervention ‘A Memorial’

Along with the memorial the project also aims at designing a recreational

area by using the concepts of place-making to make a space where the city can act as place to come together.

9

Locating The Site Bhojtal is situated on the west central part of Bhopal city and is surrounded by Van Vihar National Park on the south, human settlements on the east and north, and agriculture fields on the west. It has an area of 31 km2, and drains a catchment or watershed of 361 km2. The watershed of the Upper Lake is mostly rural, with some urbanized areas around its eastern end.

Understanding the Culture

Since the construction of the lake in the 11th century, Bhopal city has grown around it. The people are religiously and culturally attached to the lakes. The lakes meet their needs of water supply and they wash clothes in them (very harmful for the lake ecosystem), cultivate water chestnut in Bhojtal.

M OVE ME N T P ATT E RN

The lake is shrinking and being polluted due to human activities in recent times. The waste and drainage generated by nearby city of Bhopal is dumped in lake affecting its ecology.

10

STRENGTH Availability of vacant land along the soft edge of Bhoj lake offering beautiful views and great landscaping opportunities. Natural contours allowing to design different levels and landscape to flow into the built.

WEAKNESS Poor ecological value. Site covered with scrub vegetation. Visual contrast in economic and cultural practices on adjacent side of the site.

ANALY SING T HE EXI STIN G

OPPORTUNITIES Numerous hospitality services, presence of major roads and lake edge makes the site an ideal space for place-making. A pedestrian friendly promenade would enhance the accessibility and user experience

THREAT Fear of lake flooding the surrounding areas during monsoon is an inevitable threat. Site is located in old part of the city whereas major new developments are happening in new part of the city decreases the footfall near the site.

VISITOR’S CENTRE The Visitor Centre is a simple building, carefully located at the entrance of the Bhoj lake welcoming visitors for the various activities proposed on the lakefront: it offers basic amenities such as an information centre, orientation room and a cafeĚ as well as a generously shaded courtyard and a viewing deck outside. The few, precisely located windows create various focal points up and down the lake and increase the contrast between the domestic and the unlimited: an expression of our scale and our relationship with nature.

LOCAL CRAFTS BAZAAR AND TRADE CENTRE

A Facility that Re-imagines the Relationship Between the State and its People. Local crafts bazaar is a facility developed for people of Bhopal and the local tribes of Madhya Pradesh; the integrated trade centre has been designed as an office for a people who want to expand their small buisness all over nation. In addition to accommodating spaces for community engagement and learning, the crafts bazaar also encourages the local people to learn the local crafts from tribal craftsmen.

BHOPAL GAS TRAGEDY MEMORIAL Prayer For Peace Aim a blowtorch at my eyes Pour acid down my throat Strip the tissue of my lungs Drown me in my own blood Choke my baby to death in front of me Force me to watch as she dies in front of me. Cripple my children Let pain be their daily and only playmate Spare me nothing. Ruin my health so that I can no longer work Or feed my family Watch us starve. See my children drinking water at night To fill their hungry bellies, and then Poison our drinking water Never warn us of the danger Cause monsters to be born among us. Make us curse god Stunt our living children’s growth Say it has nothing to do with you. Don’t ever say sorry for 18 years long Ignore my cries and teach me My rage is as useless as my tears. Prove to me beyond all doubt There’s no justice in this world You are an American corporation I am a woman of Bhopal. - Survivor of Bhopal Gas Tragedy

18

BHOPAL GAS TRAGEDY MEMORIAL What happened on the night of O2 December 1984 was an unfortunate, unspeakable tragedy. The suffering of those who died, were diseased for lifetime, physicaly injured or mentally traumatised cannot be exaggerated. Therefore A memorial is a tribute to the victims of disaster and the sign of contribution for the surviving community . The memorial is a repository of history facts and stories that need to be told.

MONUMENT OF HOPE Look up to the future Monument of Hope is an architectural concept of a tower located in the middle of a lake in total silence, creating opposition with the horizontality of the lake. The heart of the project is a vertical tower which illuminates in 360 degrees, drifting the gaze upwards, which gives us a feeling of freedom. The concrete structure is 40 metre tall model, which reflects the contrast between the building and the surrounding natural environment. It is also the contrast between lightness and heaviness. The tower is made with two materials concrete with its brutalist side and the metal jali with its light aspect. This space is dedicated to people who survived the disaster and the ones who were lost in the world’s biggest man made industrial disaster.

REDEFINING TOWN HALL AND ITS PRECINCTS

URBAN DESIGN, VIITH SEMESTER ACADEMIC WORK CHANDINI CHOWK, DELHI

THE NEW LIFE OF A HISTORIC SPACE “ARCHITECTURE + URBAN DESIGN” The project aims at recreating a harmonious visual and physical urban form with a mix of uses and diversified activities along with augmenting

the infrastructure as per the present day needs. The main objective was to improve the physical and built environment of the neighborhood through its functional and aesthetic re-fabrication. The main challenge was to preserve the area’s traditional character and promoting its architectural and cultural heritage. Another aim kept in mind while designing was to

improve the area’s legibility based on historic origins by redesigning open public spaces.

“We are not makers of history, We are made by history.”

23

UNDERSTANDING THE SITE Chandini Chowk used to served as the trader’s street. It housed caravan’s sarais, shops and residences where traders came to buy in wholesale. To till this day Chandi Chowk serves as the biggest wholesale markets. It in-evidently had many eateries to suffice the caravan’s requirements and have grown to become very famous.

The built environment that has been altered according to the recommendations can create a huge difference in the character of precincts around important landmarks, as shown below, on the altered panoramic view of the series of façades of buildings on the Matia Mahal Road, around Jama Masjid

Historical Layers of Roads Present day Phawara Chowk became a prominent square in 1870s as it saw the visible architectural contrast between major colonial and mughal streets As the density of Shahjahanabad increased, the requirements of roads increased, thus fabric developed in different time periods. While newer connectors have been made, pathways from Mughal Times are active and thriving.

Evolution Of Shajahanabad

In 1650 Nawab Fatehpuri Begum, one of Shah Jahan’s wives, commissioned the construction of Fatehpuri Masjid, as a mosque for the poor.Hauz Qasi was built as a reservoir for the city.

Chandni Chowk was a treelined avenue with shops, residences and public amenities such as a kotwali, mosques and caravan sarais, located along it. A central water canal flowed through the center.

Connections to the fort, masjid and the gates became commercial streets, such as Dariba Kalan , Kinari Bazaar, Khari Baoli, Katra Neel etc.

The railway was introduced in 1864–65 which ran through Salimgarh Fort and cut across the northern areas of the city. The Old Delhi Railway station and Queen’s Way was constructed to welcome visitors.

25

IDENTIFICATION OF CONFLICTS

SP Mukherjee Marg

The road holds entry and exit to the Railway Station and major bus stops. Buses here take a hault of about 30 minutes before beginning their route. Its a heavy traffic road and pedestrians may have to cross the road to access bus stops on the other end.

High varied movement patterns along with informal activities have caused multiple conflicts at the junction. Old Delhi Railway station rear entrance along with BR Ambedkar University entrances also situated here creating much more haywire movements. Varied Road Widths create bottleneck jams on all roads.

Fawara Chowk

Pedestrian movement to Gurudwara and Market along with vehicular movement keep the junction chocked at all times. Rituals at the circle commemorating Mati Das along with Rickshaws awaiting customers block a majority of the road.

St.Stephen’s Junction

Burkhandi Mandir Junction

Kashmiri Gate

Sarai Junction

Telegraph Memorial Junction

Informal Eateries, defined pedestrian path different from actual movement path, high density traffic and movement to railway station exit.

Once a peaceful street induced heavy traffic due to the ISBT which was further worsen due to the Kashmiri Gate Metro Station. The historic fabric of the area lies subdued in its current circumstances as its serves as a transport hub between metro, railway and ISBT.

The road width towards the Kashmiri Gate and towards Old Delhi Railway created the bottleneck. `Lothian road in front of Bada Bazaar stays jammed

Railway station exit, bus depot has vendors on foot path, buses block road, pedestrian walk on leftover road space

Bus Stops not planned causes congestions

No connection to 6 platforms, have to go through other platforms

Lack of Planning and improper parking Heritage subdued

Lack of Retail spaces,

Used as Two wheeler Parking. Open street with green space and metro station being unaesthetically used

Lack of use of Historical structure at Loci.

Wrought Iron Foot Over Bridges, Poor Condition

Underlined Arrival/ Departure

Lack of Retail spaces,

26

Heritage Food and Commercial Route

Current issues at the Old Delhi Railway Station

Chandini Chowk has multiple high end markets. The retail shops enclose wholesale and godowns on the internal kuchas. There is a need for increase in retail shops to these wholesale markets for improving the standards and aesthetics of the region.

Rear Entrance not developed. Majority traffic thus us at the front entrance. Lack of Modern Facilities for travelers in the historic building.

TEMPLE OF PEACE AND HARMONY

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN, VTH SEMESTER ACADEMIC WORK SECTOR-106, GURUGRAM, HARYANA ARCHITECTURE AND NATURE “ARCHITECTURE + DESIGN” Today , the world in general and our country India in particular is passing through a critical phase. There is lot of strife and conflict. A large number of these conflicts arise out of religious intolerance. All religions have a basic principle of “ Sarve Bhavantu Sukhnah” i.e peace and prosperity for all. The search for the translation of this feeling through the design has also led to understand the opposite side of peace, the war. Two words, so different but at the same time so connected, in the same way life and death , happiness and sadness - words that only make sense when you understand both. That’s how the temple of peace and harmony “Afterlife” was born., A project to inspire , create memories, and feed the soul in the midst of a fine line of life and death.

“Architecture is the Meditation between Light and Volume.”

53

Site Planning

The afterlife complex is a great public destination . From daily uses to special events to a tourist spot. The complex accommodates variety of activities like congregation hall, museum, library, food court and interpretation center. While public speeches, seminars, monumental events and exhibitions can be held in built spaces ; open spaces, amphitheater and plazas are designed to promote public interactions and establish a connection with nature.

‘Tree of Knowledge’ Library The ‘tree of knowledge library’ proposes to merge special qualities of a tree and its height with its architectural built. The vision of the library is to provide inspiring and informal reading environment for its users. The library consists of playful spaces for reading and other activities. The library is constructed mainly using mushroom rcc columns with wooden covering and flat slab plates with glass facade allowing diffused natural light to flow through the structure all day.. The free standing columns around the library with green terraces provide shade to the floors and the green terraces reduce the heat gain of the structure and provide an ambient micro climate.

The Congregation Hall And Museum This is the nerve centre of the complex. Religious practices and ways of worship in different religions may be different but one thing is common i.E, meditation is some form or other. Therefore it is conceived in a manner that an environment of peace & bliss is created without any display of religious symbols, facilitating meditation and contemplation and energising the human soul. Architecture form, space and sunlight plays a large part in achieving this objective.

Lower Ground Floor Plan

First Floor Plan

The symmetric layout of the plaza and elevated pyramid created a cold and unfriendly atmosphere. To create spaces more affinity to public, instead of rigid lines on site circulation is defined by gentle fluid pathways. The berms with naturalized planting will weaken the condescending feeling associated with the elevated pyramid. With the landscape flowing into the pyramid, the tough structure will be soften and properly fit into the surroundings.

ARCHITECTURE AS A CATALYST FOR A NEW PERSPECTIVE OF WAY OF EDUCATION

“ARCHITECTURE + DESIGN” The design aims at designing a Modern Day Gurukul that could educate children for not just the theoretical life problems but also the practical ones. Vision of the project was to design a school just like a gurukul , focusing on all aspects of knowledge and not one: • Develop an atmosphere of reading. • Encourage open and sincere communication. • Focus on child’s interest. • Make learning fun through fun learning activities. • Recognize and celebrate achievements. • Make every day a learning day.
