he party season is officially upon us and much has to be arranged in preparation and who knows how to party better than house lovers huh? Its been a year and than some, but perhaps more so for lovers of house. We’ve been spoiled for choice, but why choose, there’s been much to go around, with every major artist releasing in 2013 to bigger and better festivals and some yet to come, it has officially begun and for any loyalist, this is the time to catch up on the lost partying and the time to make new friends and new discoveries. he festive season is upon us once again and we are all gearing into party mode, we want to kick back more often and have fun. It’s Clubs, Pubs, Cocktail Lounge’s or one of the many coming big events, whatever your scene. On this journey back in time we take a look at the first few big hot spots for House heads, where did house heads go to enjoy good house with fellow heads. Let’s take it back a little and go back into time on a House Musical Journey. The Winter Music Conference is one of the oldest Electronic/ Dance Music Conference held every March since the mid1980s in Miami Beach, Florida, United States. It’s aimed at artists, DJ’s, producers, Record Labels representatives, etc. Founded in 1985 by then DJs and Record Pool Directors Louis Possenti and Bill Kelly, as followers of Electronic Dance Music call it the,”WMC”. The event has been a great success as it hosts around 100 000 guests and started the growing trends of today’s SAMC’s. As time evolved so did the types of events. The WMC has helped many artists establish their careers and some to boost they careers as it offers a platform for networking amongst artists, producers and record labels making it easier for unsigned artists to get the right info on getting into the industry bridging the gap and all the red tape. House music is an everyday feeling and sharing it with people that share common views when it comes to the music just makes the moment better, that’s the value house events add to the house nation. It’s about the DJ’s, Producers, Clubs and environment, get all that right and expect a kick ass festive. The parties/events may change every now and then, but one thing that will remain the same is the love house heads share for this awesome genre, so let the festive festivities begin and let us enjoy them responsibly.

DJ OSKIDO

A man that needs no introduction and is living proof that persistence and dedication pays off, from selling Boerewors Rolls outside a Night Club in Hillbrow to his success story being told to millions today.

scar or better known as DJ Oskido is the son of a Zimbabwean politician born in Oukasi, a township near Brits, received his formal education in his motherland and later returned to South Africa to pursue a career in music. The ending isn’t always an accurate reflection of the beginning. DJ Oskido’s dream began behind a Boerewors Roll stand outside a famous night club in Hillbrow in the early 90’s where he would sneak into the club to get himself a slot for the closing set, where he would play his unique style of American House tracks which were slowed down to a tempo which African’s could dance to. His career really took off when opportunity was met by preparation, one night

when the resident DJ was no show and Oskido was more than willing to take advantage of the situation… the rest as they say is history. Working his way up he moved from the club DJ scene into the radio DJ field, he worked as a DJ for the than very popular YFM at the time. Armed with the power of radio at his disposal he fully utilized the opportunity he was given as he managed to set fire to his career which made him wellestablished. Commandment after commandment he kept us partying through the festive seasons and has helped us see the New Year in the Oskido way. Not only is he huge in the house scene, but also in the alternative genre of Kwaito. He is also Co-Owner of Kalawa Jazzmee records, he is a man that is in it for the love of music.

UNDERGROUND SESSIONS: T he attention span of a House head can be smaller than a bubble fish’s memory, so before you get distracted by the pretty pictures or the next best House track lemme share a lil’ something with you. There are big artists, there are bedroom DJ’s and then there are the underground DJ’s in-between. These are the guys that play at all the gigs you never hear about, they don’t get photo shoots and they don’t get the spotlight or groupies (ok, maybe some groupies). These are the guys that focus on playing and playing good- whether you’re listening or not.

out with the organizers for a weekend and had one of the most intimate experiences with House Music I’ve ever had. The Cherry groove hostes loves house, Cherry Groove lives house and Cherry Groove gets house. And that’s the first thing you notice at a Cherry Groove gig; you either get Cherry Groove or you don’t.

Every member in their crew has their own style and technique of playing and there’s a signature that encompasses their philosophy, Play good music, real music and that has meaning. If you want to experience House music at a level of musicianship and artistry, if you want a set that moves more than just your body but your consciousness, if you want to dance all night and not get tired because the music is just that ef’ing

CHERRY GROOVE good then I recommend a Cherry Groove Gig. Not just restricting themselves to Hosting gigs they’ve moved into production with tracks featured on the YFM Hot 99Dance charts and the Urban Beat on Metro FM, impressed yet? Those same tracks were included as features with Zeedan on the House Afrika Sessions. Founded in 2007 by Viwe “The Don” Mnyaluza, Kopano “Bunz” Koahela and Zola “Zo Deepest” Tshabalala. They’ve added two more DJ’s to their crew in Sibusiso “Xclusiv” Buthelezi and Lehlohonolo “Hlonifyd DJ” Seabi. Cherry Groove has been around for a mere 6 years and they are only getting started with the House Game take over. The crew have hosted their gigs at, amongst

others: Zasha Lounge, Ko Kae ko teng in Leondale and Endoweni in Vosloorus. They attract a young hip crowd of 20-somethings with the odd appearance of a sugar daddy acting cool and the random gogo acting brand new, but an appreciation for music is the common thread that binds them all together. Very good marketing and an honest hustle will see these guys reach new heights, give them time and your ears. Hosting gigs all over the East-rand this is a crew to watch, they know what they are doing on the decks, they get House and adapt their music to their various crowd while keeping their philosophy of playing good, authentic music and not just what’s hot right now. We need more crews like this and more gigs like this. As for me, you won’t find me anywhere else this festive season other than at a Cherry Groove gig. For the love of true house, played well. FUTTURE TO LOOK OUT FOR

ape Town born and bred identical twins Darren and Ryan Rigney have affirmed themselves as a formidable duo on the house scene known as Twins on Deck. Their insatiable taste for good music from an early age has proven to be the source of their continuous growth in a highly competitive industry. Having relocated to the West Rand in Johannesburg, the duo managed to catch the eye of the big guns by being noticed by the likes of DJ Warras who molded their talent by teaching them how to master the decks. As time went, the twins went from watching Warras play at gigs to actually hosting major gigs of their own. The twinsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; musical maturity lead them to establish Triple Threat which comprises of the twins and DJ Warras on YFM thus placing them on the proverbial map. The 23-year-old dynamic duo is marked by the good rapport that is easily seen between them, which ensures that their jams are blended with infallible patience. PARTY CAPITALS MAFIKENG The party scene in Maftown is not as big as the ones in the other cities. Mafikeng is a small place and most of the year it is a very chilled. People from here usually reside in other provinces and return home around this time of year. Everybody returning home has been hustling so all they want to do when they get to Mafikeng is let loose and get on their dancing shoes. Although the party scene is not as big, it is big enough to hold its own. The clubs are not far from each other so this makes club hopping and the night life easy. A great experience would be going to one of Mafikengs themed parties, like the 60s. This is what draws the rest of the country to Mafikeng at this time.

CAPE TOWN Like Durban, Cape Town also has that one street notorious for the best parties one can hope for. In Cape Town, it is Long Street. It is known for hosting the best New Yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Eve parties, to welcome the New Year in style! In the past few years, we have seen Gautengers and even Durbanites relocate to Cape Town for the New Yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Eve bash, so this year it cannot be missed. Long Street has many places in particular that are situated on rooftops for the definitive Cape Town experience. They open early, close late and can fit in a large number of people. They are great for fun in the sun, to enjoy the sun as it sets on Table Mountain and then in the night time, party up a storm.

JOHANNESBURG Johannesburg, Jozi Maboneng, home to some of the best DJs, as well as kwaito music, you are guaranteed to find your kind of vibe here. For an uninterrupted night out on the town, Rosebank is one place you ought to visit. By taking a walk down the main road, you will have a number of trendy spots to choose from and choosing to club hop might just be the smartest decision for a great experience. For the ultimate wild and party animal experience, you have to go to Soweto. The entire township is vibrant and it is definitely the city that does not sleep around this time of year.

DURBAN

In Durban, during the festive season, the weekend starts on a Wednesday. The best place to party and the number one place suggested by Durbanites is Florida Road. Here, people can both wine and dine or they can get down on the dance floor. Anyone can find their type of scene on Florida Road without feeling like they are intruding. Gateway Shopping Centre is where more of the club scene is at. The best place to spend your Saturday and Sunday is in Emlazi, at a shisa nyama where there is good food, drinks and all sorts of music sessions with Durbanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s finest DJs. What’s a party if you can’t talk about it months later? But YOLO right? Wrong! YOLO is an excuse for bad decions you have no business making. YOLO is what that crazy chick about to sex that random guy in the dark coner and end up HIV positive said. YOLO is the reason you drink a bit much end up driving and end up dead. And that’s when it became real.

Fun is fun, partying is awesome. It’s great to live young, wild and free. But nothing fun or cool about funerals or ARV’s or STD’s or even blacking out. Doesn’t play with your life, you only get one? Go out, enjoy yourself, dance, and laugh but do it with a sense of consciousness. Loss of life from irresponsible party is a total waste.

nbelievable how the year has flown by. It’s that time of the year when we all want to be outdoors having a good time with friends and family. Who wants to be cooped up indoors when the sun is bright and the malls and dance floors are calling. Partying is a good way of having fun and enjoying ourselves, I mean were young damnit! So can you go too far when partying? I think NO. I mean really who doesn’t want to have a good time, especially when it is this time of the year. The festive season is upon us and good music is being churned out feverishly by the hottest DJ’s all over the country. And suddenly you want to try something new, move with the beat, move with the moment and live for the night, after a long year of being careful and prudent because you had to be in the office or in class the following morning, I’m sure we can all agree, a release is well overdue. So let’s get WILD! As with most young people, I’m sure we’ve all tried going hard every day for a week or two and come on, let’s be honest it’s not easy, if even possible, so basically going all out all year is not something many of us mature ones know can be done and even if you do, you might not survive the year.

So when we ask “can you take it too far” we must put it in context, it’s the party season and I’m not sure about you, but I’m trying to make up for a long and boring year while killing the rare off time I’m about to get,

so please don’t be telling me what I can and cannot do, because where there is loud music, lovely beverages and no office or class to get to come morning, memories will be made, best believe. If there’s one thing about this time of the year that is very true is it brings people of different backgrounds and vibratos together. It revives and feeds our soul especially after a long year and so possibilities become endless and barriers seem breachable and provided you’ve prepared yourself (maybe have a conversation with yourself first of cause, that this, what your about to do might not end well), than hey, you’re A to go and regrets do not exist and there’s always the fact that your aim is not to cause trouble, but rather to live without the “what if I had” regrets. We live and learn and nothing has ever been learnt without asking the question, right? The idea is always about having clean fun, partying has never been about hurting people and should never be, because when you plan to have a good time, you take the necessary precautionary steps like getting a designated driver duh, always caring spare cash, just in case that prick drops you and you find yourself stranded, but the ultimate aim, no worries, no stress and let’s see how far I can push it. MonoTone The Superstar Producer with an Impeccable Ear.

e is the man responsible for the title music on some of the most watched shows on mainstream television as well as having had a helping hand in the production of the 2012 smash hit album Train of Love by Donald, but Pontsho Moolo AKA Monotone, born and bred in the North West, Lehurutshe, has had a career spanning almost 10 years and has established himself as a house producer and artist

in his own right. Having released his debut album in 2012, Heavy on Yo Soul which brought us the smash hits “invitation to dance” and “who do you love” his work has been featured on a number of compilations of big names like DJ Franky and DJ Euphonik and according to the man, this is only the beginning. We caught up with him for an update on what he got up to in 2013 and what to expect for the upcoming year.

DM: You’ve been out of the spotlight for quite some time now, the last we heard of you was with ‘invitation to dance’ , what have you been up to since releasing your album ‘Heavy On Yo Soul? MT: I actually never left after “Invitation to Dance” , a few singles dropped i.e “Who do you love”, “Panja”, “Flashlights” from the album “Heavy on yo Soul”....And I’ve been focusing a lot on doing music for TV (mood music and theme tracks)...e.g The soap Rhythm City, SABC Sport shows i.e (SoccerZone, Laduma, Soccer 411) etc. DM: Apparently you worked on Donald’s smash hit album ‘Train of Love’, how did that collaboration come about and did you expect the success it got? MT: Yeah, we’ve been friends since varsity days, that’s how we met, and during the prime time of “Invitation to Dance” I used to tour with him to help him get his music out there and occasionally we were in studio...He is a very talented artist it was expected. DM: Would you consider yourself a producer or a DJ first? MT: Definitely a Producer, I’ve been doing music all my life, from playing instruments at church, to formally studying music and Sound Engineering post matric, but I enjoy both.

DM: What do you think of the current house landscape and what would you like to bring to it? MT: I wouldn’t wanna take anything from it, because I feel it’s awesome, there is a lot of innovation happening, new elements are being introduced, like the current heavy drums on a lot of tracks and still maintaining soulful elements, I just wanna maintain the “Monotone feel” that I introduced . DM: You work a lot with television productions, why is that and what do you do exactly for many of those productions? Would you say it enhances your Career as a musician? MT: I am an Audio Final Mixer for the public broadcaster(SABC), I do post production for a lot of shows on TV, I get involved in mixing the audio for these shows, clean the audio to maintain broadcast standards, record voice overs etc. Sometimes they approach me to do theme tracks for their shows... DM: Lastly, can we expect anything from you anytime soon? can’t play commercial and compromise my set. But at the same time I can’t play too DEEP because I’m watching the crowd and you don’t know how they might take it”. I spent 24 Hours with this guy and that’s the only sentence I remember. And no, I wasn’t drunk, it’s the only thing he said that got me wondering, what the hell does the crowd want? And the answer I got from his set is, they themselves don’t even know. He played no trash house during the set. No Dr Malinga vocals, no Durban maybe-house maybe-kwaito, no via Orlando or whatever is hot right now, but the crowd kept dancing, the heads kept moving, the feet kept tapping and on a few occasions’ gents came over to the DJ booth to give a salute and a simple “Hayi, ntwana- uyadlala! Unama simba”. If you read that like a snob, its ok we’ll forgive you, but what we won’t forgive is people who don’t understand music, House music. There are DJ’s and then there are glorified track selectors. This guy is a DJ! His track transitions are not cheap trick plays with volume levels and track tempo alterations, no, that’s not skill, that’s not talent. What this guy does is

totally different, moulding, blending, mixing and marrying tracks into something with a smooth flow. His set wasn’t stop start; it was more of a continuous carefully curated essay piece. He starts off with heavy deep tracks that don’t hold back on base and keep a steady tempo, and then he ups the ante with tracks with more keys and vocals. Listening to Sbusiso’s set, every track played feels like an introduction to the next track. And the next track feels like an intro to the next one, and the next one. You keep waiting for the next thing, it feels like something’s coming but it never does and that’s his technique. A prolonged high-tempo deep set played with high intensity minimal effects. Voted as Kasi FM DJ of the week in November and on his way to the RED Square DJ competition with 5 other contestants, I have one piece of advice: Go to Hurricanes on the 8th of December to watch a massacre, this DJ isn’t playing for second. He won’t be ignored, His skills won’t go unnoticed, it’s only a matter of time before you hear the name “ DJ Xclusiv” in the big leagues… just remember DEEP told you first. DEEP HOUSE: THE NEW DANCE MUSIC

DEEP HOUSE, THE HOUSE GENRE YOU SHOULD BE PARTYING TO We always, myself included, go on and on about how deep house is a ‘feeling’ or an experience and many more expressions, yes all these descriptions are true without a doubt, but the bottom line is, Deep House is MUSIC. It’s a blend of rhythm, different instruments and melodies and in the end you get a song and songs, essentially are what we party to. What I am trying to say is certain individuals create the impression to many that deep house cannot be enjoyed by the masses because it was created for the selected few who have been blessed by the deep ‘calling’. A lot of DJ’s say that if they stick to purely deep centred mixes, chances are they won’t get as many gigs as the next DJ who plays commercial tunes in a lot of popular clubs. And I just think those club managers have got it all wrong. Deep house has seen tremendous growth

in the last 10 years and it continues to get bigger and bigger. I say they should give deep a chance, for any or all occasions whether it be at a braai, in the club or the old fashion house party. There’s deep for everyone, any musical taste can be catered for. Clubs such as 115 couldn’t have been wrong all those years ago with their 100 percent strictly deep policy. Deep house needs to progress from just being played in the underground clubs downtown, it has to spread to the rest of the city as well. A mellow and chilled atmosphere is just as exciting and sometimes even more so compared to the rowdy catastrophic vibe. If you are planning anything this festive season, as long as we have deep on the menu, then count me in. After all who can ignore the deep sound? I say again, let’s give deep a chance. SWEET MELODY-NORA EN PURE

s the title suggests, Sweet Melody, is one of those indie dance tracks you just cannot ignore. This is not a genre I particularly or often take note of, but Nora en Pure does not disappoint with their banger beats. Nora en Pure is currently based in Zurich, but hails from Mzansi and draws much inspiration from the motherland. This is evident in the track; it’s a fusion of the best of both worlds. The baseline is too exciting ,the type that keeps you on your toes, laced with the sweetest, laid back and sultry vocals, which for me, just sealed the deal. The blend between soulful vocals and a banger baseline gave birth to a ‘Melody’ of note. Take a listen

ZAKES BANTWINI Zakes Bantwini’s rise to fame is the direct reflection of pure persistence and belief in dreams and is the result of making the necessary choices in the climb to success in order to build that very success on a strong foundation. He first dreamt of becoming a dancer, but stumbled on music and bug the bit, after which he helped develop the career of L’vovo Derango and was always the smartly dressed, cheeky dancer right hand man alongside L’vovo in all his videos, but what was hidden underneath the suave of the man was an incredible musical talent and love for learning. The combination of the two led him to cross paths with the likes of Black Coffee and Shota, one became his collaborator on some of his biggest hits e.g Clap your hands ,the other a mentor and friend who inspired him to study music further, propelling him to one of the most musically gifted and appreciative musicians in the country. Now, three years after an explosive, game changing debut album, Love, Light and Music and a music Diploma from UKZN, Zakes returns with his much anticipated 2nd album, The Real Book, The Fake Book, My Music Bible, a title inspired by his Jazz studies and an album inspired by all things loved by Zakes Bantwini. He tells us the story behind the scenes.

DM: The real book and the fake book, My music bible...an album in the making for three years, highly anticipated, why did it take so long to put together and release? ZB: I didn’t feel ready until now to release an album. For me, it’s not about creating hits, but rather music that I feel proud of and that I think my fans will enjoy. I’ve always seen my music as a career so when I’m not focusing on recording, I’m performing or collaborating with other artists…but no matter what, it’s always about the music. DM: One of the things I appreciate about your music is the attention to detail and the extensive use of musical instruments complimented by impeccable arrangements, can we expect to see that same take on this album as with the previous? ZB: I really pushed myself musically and melodically with this album, but without a doubt, when I wrote and created every track, my first thought was always how will I perform this and how will this track be performed on a stage with my band? My band play such a huge role in my live performances that I wanted every track to be a real experience for the audience and you don’t often get to experience so many instruments on stage at one time.

QA DM: Unlike a lot of house albums being released, where almost every track has a feature, you worked with very few people on this album, was it a selfish decision or did the album inspire the decision?

ZB: I wanted this album to do itself and it was a spiritual experience for me. I approached a couple different artists in the industry – people I’ve worked with before and people I hadn’t, but only three people responded, which means the album only wanted three people. It was such a privilege to work with Ziyon from Liquideep, the legendary Themba Mkhize and J Martins from Nigeria to give the album some African sound. DM: Your sound is undoubtedly inspired by your musical education background, having finally completed your degree, did you find yourself exploring and experimenting with sound with more confidence than before for this album?

ZB: Definitely, house music is doing very well at the moment and musicians, including myself, are now starting to enjoy bookings from across the content and overseas which is a clear representation that the popularity of the genre is growing beyond our borders. DM: This album has been released in partnership with Sony Music, we haven't heard much from Mayonie records, your label, how are things going with the label and can we expect any new names being released under the label anytime soon?

ZB: Yes, this is a collaboration between Sony Music and Mayonie Productions. Next year, Mayonie Productions will be celebrating a decade in the music industry so we are planning to release new music as part of the celebrations and re-release a collaborative album from former and current Mayonie Production artists. Lastly, we will be releasing a hip hop artist, Shon G, so 2014 is going to be an exciting year for Mayonie Productions.

ZB: I encourage every aspiring artist I meet to further their education and rather see music as a career, instead of a hobby. Education broadened my perceptions and thoughts on so many levels. It made me think in ways I would never have considered before, and I’m sure through that, it allowed me to experiment so much more with music.

DM: You are an intricate musician, what category do you place yourself in the current landscape of house in the country and internationally for that matter? ZB: I see myself as a musician and contributor to every genre.

DM: The most unexpected collaboration on this album had to be 'ifunaya' with J Martins, how did that come about?

DM: Besides your education, where do you draw your inspiration when compiling your music?

ZB: J Martins and I have always been close friends and as a Nigerian muso – I definitely wanted him on my latest album. I also think fans will appreciate the sound I developed when I brought together Nigerian sound and South African house music. DM: House is beyond big in SA, how is the genre doing in other parts of the continent,

ZB: I’ve always been inspired by the words ‘legend’ and ‘icon’ as they continuously push me to achieve my absolute best because I want to look back in 20 years’ time and be remembered for the contribution I’ve made to the music industry. I also view every day as an opportunity to take one step closer to what I want to achieve.

DM: Your one of the pioneers of the Durban house sound that's more of a crossover of kwaito and house, yet your own musical sound is far from it, can Elvovo's music for example be considered house music? ZB: It would depend from which perspective you would look at it. From an instrumental point of view, I would say yes, but from a lyrics point, its kwaito. Then if both worlds, instrumental and lyrical, are put together… then Durban Kwaito music is born. DM: So we know Zakes is a lover of fine and beautiful things, are you perhaps loving a beautiful lady, who happens to have a beautiful voice, named Nandi at present as reports suggest? ZB: At the moment, I’m all about my music. I’ve worked hard for this moment and so proud of my new album that I want the focus to be on that. We pay a lot of attention to things that don’t matter, but my focus is music and always will be music and building this nation. DM: In your opinion, with all the brilliant house musicians out there, who would you say is killing it? ZB: Everyone is making their own unique contribution which is building the genre for all of us; I don’t want to see myself as saying one artist is better than another. DM: Lastly what else can we expect from Zakes in the near future, musically and business wise? ZB: I’m going to be releasing my new single Ghetto shortly and along with that, I want to give South African fans the opportunity to share with me their success story. he Breathe Sunshine Africa Music Conference is making its way to Cape Town on the 14th to 15th February at Cape Town’s City Hall. The conference aims at networking and knowledge sharing between all members involved in the African music community. The two day event seeks to attract a diverse audience

from the local community as well as Africa and their respective territories. The conference will include workshops, panel discussions, presentations, exhibition stands and a showcase of African talent. More details to follow soon. Q: Who is AJ? A: AJ better known as DJ Arthur Junior, is a simple guy passionate about producing urban house music as well as a club DJ. I'm currently embarking on a TV career with my first show being Miss Soweto on Soweto TV. Q: What inspired you to be a DJ? A: Growing up we stayed with an uncle of mine who was a big fan of DJ Fresh and he always played the DJ Fresh House Flava CD's and it was the only music I ever heard. So from a young age I was a big house head. My Father himself was also mad about house music and was a DJ by the name of Vuvuzela. They inspired the passion of house music and DJ in me. Q: How would you describe your sound and style of music? A: When it comes to my music it's very urban

styled, with a pinch of old school. I enjoy producing music that speaks about matters of the heart. Q: What influences the style of music that you have chosen to associate your brand with? A: I'm mostly influenced by my relationship status (when in a relationship) or situations I hear of or encounter from other people. There's nothing I understand more than reflecting the chemistry of two beings onto house music. Q: Your father is arguably one of the greatest kwaito stars to have ever lived, so what made you choose a different path for yourself in terms of music, where others would have followed in their fatherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s footsteps? A: Hahaha, I guess we grew up differently.

My father voiced out his feelings as he was influenced by the politics of his time hence the sons, Daai Deng is nie Reg, Don't Call Me Kaffir and more. With me I was influenced by the trendy house music that was big then and now. Q: How has your father influenced your career? A: My father opened doors for me and helps shape my journey and craft. He is my mentor as well as the biggest influencing factor behind me choosing a career in music. His passion for the art made me want to get into the music industry. Q: What would be the ideal Xmas present for AJ this Christmas? A: The Pioneer XDJR-1, this is as good as it gets! Q: what gigs would say you are looking forward to this festive season? A: The Johannesburg New Yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Party and The Lesotho Festival hosted by Vodacom in Maseru. The place gets packed with thousands of people who all came for nothing but a good time. They really appreciate our craft. Q: Will we ever hear anything on the production side for AJ? A: Yes, I have released 3 singles already, This Day, Ndimele Wena & Girl of My Dreams. They have helped break me into the industry and I will carry on releasing music. Q: What are your future plans in terms of Music? There are a lot of great records out there, records that we hold close to our hearts, a record that you may even classify as your favourite House jam ever. But there’s this specific make and texture of House song that’s universally labeled a “Club Banger”. This song has the “YHOOOOO” effect on people - when this song comes on in any South African club or event we all harmoniously yell “YHOOOO”. This song, completely annihilates the pre-party plan of aiming not to sweat.

Let’s take a brief look at what makes a great party track. KICK - It all starts in the composition of the song and nothing beats a thumping kick, which is ultimately the spine of the song. At a later stage this element of the song will be left out creating a subconscious crave for it only to come back with… well… a BANG. MELODY – A personal rule of thumb is a catchy uncomplicated melody that will linger in our

minds 48hours after the song has played. Case in point: Knee Deep’s All About Love

powerful instrument, vocals offer a party track its life, its breath. The vocal comes with the emotion and frankly on this one, anything goes! Dennis Ferrere’s Hey Hey with simple but unorthodox approach, to powerful messages like Gregor Salto’s I’m Your Friend.

INSTRUMENTS – Most party tracks aren’t mellow or chilled for that matter. They are less musical & more creative & daring (which is another echelon of musicality). That said, the producer might want to play around with synthesis to give it its ‘raw’ element.

ARRANGEMENT – Perhaps what will make or break a party track. It’s simple really: start slow, establish a good build and combination of sounds. Mid-song bring the break in, then build to the climax of the track.

Once you make it in, you are greeted by beautiful girls in long heels and those sexy body hugging dresses. So it is a necessity to dress to kill when you go to hush. Indeed, if you put some effort in you’ll find Hush to be a very fun, exciting and welcoming atmosphere for those who love to mingle, meet new people and dance the night away.

Title: Exodus Record label: Soulistic Music Artist: Culoe De Song His most iconic work is what he calls this album and has been one of the most highly anticipated albums of 2013 from this Soulistic signee legend in the making. Culoe’s renowned tribal beat thumping sound is what we’ve come to know him for and what he has made his signature sound. In “Exodus” he continues to experiment further with the sound while never losing the root core of good arrangement and excellent meeting of vocals specifically designed for the sound. The features are nothing short of the best South Africa has to offer in vocals with the likes of (one of my favourites) Thandiswa Mazwai, Shota, Kabome, “it” girl of the moment, Monea and international vocalist Glen Lewis amongst others making appearances on different tracks. The extensive features is not really surprising, Culoe seems to love having the vocals of artists that tend to emulate his own love for the African sound on his biggest tracks and it also carries through with the current house trend of serious vocal features. The album already features tracks that are on high rotation on many radio stations around the country such as “loving marvin”. What makes this album stand out for me though, is its commercial friendly tone, something that I think Culoe has never really done, one gets a sense this was a deliberate move from him as compared to his previous work. I listed this album as one of the most anticipated of the year and all its promise and hope has delivered. Rating: 70/

Title: Three Second Memory Record label: Sony Music Artist: Goldfish The duo that brought jazzy and funky pop house to the stages of the world launching them into the one of the biggest names in house the world over. The duo that is Goldfish stays with you long after you’ve stopped listen to them and what’s even shocking is how young this duo is. Their mix of funky, jazzy pop house all showcased on a live platform is an out of this world experience that takes the listener on a virtual trip. Three second memory, truly speaking feels like a nostalgic trip, they continue with their funky jazzy pop house sound that perfectly selected vocals to accompany the sometimes deep base sound sometimes funk jazz sound. The title track “Three second memory” has been on high rotation and has already got the masses going crazy, it features Sakhile Moleshe. This album is one any loyalist will enjoy, it is Goldfish at their best, mixing the sounds we know and have come to expect from them and does not really go outside of the realm we’ve come to expect from the fellows, however it in no way disappoints and will have many dancing endlessly. ALBUM REVIEW

Title: For the love of house Vol. 5 Record label: Soul Candi Artist: DJ Euphonik Euphonik is a busy man and has been very busy in 2013. “For the love of house Vol.5” follows on the footsteps of “house essentials” and “Total Blackout” released late 2012. The latest volume follows “total blackout” and features various artists, from Uhuru to Chommee (just as surprised as you), very much like its predecessor it’s loud and has a high thumping electro sound, but is also balanced by more deep sounds with the Uhuru remix of “Jack Knife” ft Chommee. We hear Shota in “bad boy” giving us a taste of his best vocals while trying to keep up with the high tempo electro beat of the song. The combination has proven to be a successful one with the audience reacting quite positively to the tune. This marks the second collaboration of the two and evidently, they enjoy pushing each other to the edge, with Euphonik doing most of the pushing. The vocals of Kelly are also added to another “bad boy” sound alike in “break free”, this is also another unexpected collaboration that features the trade mark electro thumps that Euphonik has enjoyed using so much in his beats. This is a solid album offering from Euphonik and features some memorable tunes, with even more collaborations.

ften people think one needs to have money to get beautiful clothes, I tell you now, it is a myth. I’m that person who shops anywhere, from downtown shops to your designer boutiques, because the reality is those expensive boutiques don’t always have clothes that are up to scratch. One needs to have basic items in their wardrobe, i.e. a black pencil skirt, white shirt, a pair of blue jeans, and t-shits in different colours i.e. pink, yellow, green etc. Once you’ve collected such items, mix and match them. Yep it is that simple,

adies you should know this, your shoes can make or break your whole look. Shoes should be a girl’s best friend, in your collection include a pair of stilettos, flat pumps, sandals and sneakers. These would work with the items of clothing we spoke about earlier i.e. your flat pumps go well with your jeans. One thing that always works for me though, is buying shoes at a shoe shop, this is cause they specialise in the field of shoe making. Remember ladies you can never have enough pairs of shoes, collect, collect and collect, otherwise you’ll find yourself wearing a pencil skirt with a pair of trainers, not glam.

And remember ladies make up is not to make you beautiful, but to enhance what you already have. There are plenty of shops in malls, in which you can walk in and get advice on what will work on you.

t is vital to have a sling bag, clash bag, formal work bag and a nice purse you can be confident to take out when with other people. Branded bags? Although they are awesome, they are also overrated. There’s plenty of nice ones out there, always ask for your girlfriend’s opinion to help with the purchase.

Hair

astly and certainly not least, like they say “save the best for last” I say “save the important for last”, Hair ladies, hair. We all have bad hair days, no one is an exception. This can be minimized; one doesn’t have to put on a weave costing a grand and have it for 3months, no. Getting a nice hair cut cost less than 20bucks, then braid your hair, do cornrows, keep a natural look with an afro or dreads, change into a weave they go from as little as 100bucks to put on, and they are done to perfection.

ost men would like to believe that it is only women who should go through trouble to make sure they look good. But truth is if I step out of the house looking good, why would I wanna be seen with a scruffy brother? Not glam. Brothers, in as much you feel big and bold walking around with a ‘fine’ girl, we also see you as

our accessories too. Nothing gives a lady a ‘Cherrie on top’ feeling like being with a cleaned up brother at a mall, club or even at a chesa nyama. So brothers here are some tips for you to complement all my ladies putting an effort to make sure they always look good.

Clothes

t’s an unfortunate thing that most guys are so brand obsessed, such that they end up with no style and without variety of clothing items. Brothers it is ok to mix and match your non branded and branded items. Truth is; there is no need for you to buy one t-shirt costing R500, and have nothing else to wear, ending up in a situation where that’s all people identify you by. Also it looks hideous seeing one with Adidas pants, UZI t-shirt and a CAVELA on, just because they are all branded, it doesn’t mean they all work together. When putting together your look, always have balance at the back of your mind, coordinate i.e. with your Levi’s jeans, you can wear a plain white t-shirt from Woolworths, your loafer shoes and a cardigan.

Cologne and lip balm

hen I asked a couple of ladies to choose one thing that gets them turned on about a guy, the majority said “his smell”, yep your cologne brothers. This is because we love being in your arms. Who on earth would wanna be in the arms of a man with smelly armpits? I hope you get it. Invest in good cologne and it should last you about 3months, and body sprays which start from as little as R20, such as axe, well known and been around for generations. SIDE NOTE: Also your lips shouldn’t be dry, put some moisturiser on them, dry lips are associated with hunger, so you don’t wanna always be looking like a hungry brother.

ust as I said in the ladies section, shoes can make or break your entire outfit; my uncle always said shoes are very important because they carry you around all day. Therefore, it is very important that you invest in good pairs when you are buying shoes. I should acknowledge this, most guys do invest in good pairs, I see this in clubs, malls, at work etc keep it up. In your collection, include sneakers, loafers, formal shoes and boots to have a variety so to give each look a nice finishing touch.

A Watch I

personally don’t advise any man to carry “man bags” NO, just because something is trending it doesn’t mean it is good. I’ve seen men in suits with men bags, now men carry more stuff with them than women? STOP this! It is not fine at all. Rather than wasting money on this, invest in a good watch. Watches have a way of completing a look to perfection. Most girls look at a man’s shoe and watch to determine the kind of guy he is, we are not interested in what sort of bag you are carrying.

Your hair

ust like women, it is important to have your hair done. A hair cut, and removing some of the facial hair, very important, it looks clean and fresh. There are plenty of styles you can try, like the Kendrick Lamar cut, mohock and my all-time favourite, the brush cut, or keep it simple by going bald. MY EXPERIENCE WITH REGINE STEENBOK

reative. Innovative. Effective. I’m talking about the spectacular German designer and filmmaker Regine steenbok. This is not just any ordinary designer, she’s not about the ramp and limelight, she is about incorporating clothing with art. She makes clothes according to the body movement and creates a film from that. She shares this dope concept with different countries from South Africa to Japan. She’s patient and passionate, which is what made this experience more pleasing. Steenbok has made a name for herself worldwide. In 2009 she was selected to join the Paris creative fashion show and has stated that was her shining moment and she is still very humble. She owns a store in Germany which is a nucleus of a small laboratory. The New patterns and samples are created in the adjoining studio and orders are processed whilst customers try out the current collection. I’d like to share my experience with her whilst she paid SA a visit. I got the opportunity of attending a three-day workshop with Regine. The workshop was about incorporating different types of fabrics and making a pattern from just taking measurements. We started by forming the patterns and cutting the fabric. The main idea was to form a replica of garments that you own using different methods of construction. The theme for this production was black and white and the production/ film was labelled ‘White Fence’. When all the garments were done, they were followed by a performance which was the short film-white fence. It was about show casing the garments and painting the fence white. The concept of the fence was about purity amongst school girls. Apart from the hard work that went in this 15minute production, I loved every moment of the experience. I learnt a few tricks when it comes to constructing garments. I was grateful to have her visit our country.
