INTRO
WELCOME Dear Colleagues! I am pleased to present you the first newsletter of 2014. Since our last newsletter we have received many enthusiastic reactions and have been trying to further improve the contents and the lay-out of our newsletter to ensure this keeps inspiring you. Before telling you about a few highlights of this newsletter I wanted to let you know that we have just closed the 2013 books and it has been a breakthrough year for the Company. We have delivered strong financial results due to continued performance improvement in all our service lines resulting in a 13% growth of our consolidated revenues to $ 609 million and an impressive 55% growth of our gross profits to $ 106 million. This allowed us to re-invest all the cash our business generated into the company and enabled us to hire approximately 300 new colleagues. Due to all your hard work we have finished the year with a record high year-end backlog of $625 million. In this issue we will tell you a bit more about our ACT for Safety program and the HSEQ team behind this important initiative. This team has provided the Safety Training to over 450 people last year to ensure we keep focusing on an incident free working environment. Part of our capital investments will be in the Ultimate Trenching Spread on the newly chartered vessel, Havila Phoenix, and upgrading the Deep Endeavour in Brazil. Both are featuring in this issue of the newsletter. An overview of our current global Operations will inform you about the activities of our current 14 active vessels and the three new vessels which are expecting to join our fleet later this year.
A huge task for our commercial and operational teams to secure successful campaigns for our vessels and for our colleagues onshore and certainly offshore to maintain the solid levels of project execution. Within DeepOcean we foster our international culture and in this issue we have asked our team in Mexico to present themselves and their achievements in 2013 on page 12. Although already some time behind us we wanted to bring you a few impressions of the various year end and Christmas parties and we close this issue with interviews of two interesting colleagues. DeepOcean is back on track and ready to be fully recognized as the re-emerging IMR leader and global trenching and cable lay specialist. 2013 was an amazing year but I am very confident we can demonstrate this year that this is the new norm. Our Board of Directors and our Shareholders recognize all your efforts and have approved an ambitious capital investment program in 2014 to set the Company for future growth. Looking forward to working with all of you on a successful 2014!
Yours truly
Dennis de Vreede Chief Financial Officer DeepOcean

ACHIEVING SAFETY EXCELLENCE The ‘Act for Safety’ program is a major initiative in DeepOcean Group that shows that the Executive Management Team really takes safety seriously.
‘ACT for Safety’ was first launched in 2012 and during 2013 gained momentum across the organization. The roll out of such programs take time due to the number of personnel involved and to keep up the speed we have to constantly revitalize the focus on it. Training has taken place across the globe and a lot of enthusiasm and buy in has been displayed by the participants. The number of DeepOcean employees, both
project and marine personnel, being trained is increasing steadily. New employees are joining us and they also have to be involved in the program. Various approaches have been used to reach the workforce. In most cases members from the HSEQS departments have trained personnel. Groups have gathered on the various vessels and worksites and good discussions have rolled with an agreement of making a difference to the work environment.
In situations where the vessels have been difficult to reach, dedicated Offshore Managers, Medics and Supervisors have shown commitment to the ‘ACT for Safety’ program and taken responsibility for the training in their organization. These individuals taking personal ownership to the ‘ACT for Safety’ program show that they are true safety leaders!
HSE
OUR VISION Once fully embraced and implemented, the ‘ACT for Safety’ Program will give global consistency and alignment of approach regarding HSE. All elements of this program are based on best practice, research and most importantly, the feedback from our employees in the safety culture survey.
dedication. We do not ask for everyone to be perfect and change over-night. What we hope to achieve is a small improvement of awareness, attitude and behaviour with everyone, each time. A small 1-2% improvement with everyone may lead to a very good result for work environment and safety performance!
The ‘ACT for Safety’ Program is the starter for behavioral change and is supported by robust and effectively implemented HSE systems and strong safety leadership throughout the organization. A key element is the ‘Act for Safety’ dialogue, which is designed to enhance the dialogue between leaders and personnel with respect to safety. To improve we need to talk about the technical, organizational and personal challenges that could prevent us from working safely. We all have an obligation to improve our working environment and the leaders have an additional obligation to address the identified challenges. Our safety performance trend continues in a positive direction although we would like it to be even better. The reactive safety indicators are levelling out and to improve further we clearly need to do something different. Research has shown that the key element in closing the gap to zero is human behavior. Changing our personal behavior is a thorough task which takes time and
MANUEL VASQUEX COTERA HSEQS MANAGER (MEXICO)
My current position is HSEQS manager in DeepOcean’s México office. As part of this department I have the responsibility to ensure that our office and projects are complying with quality, health and safe and environmental standards, as well as local and international regulation and our client’s requirements. I am also DPA and CSO for Mexican flag vessel Atlantic Challenger. With this, I have the opportunity to work with both areas in México: ROV projects and SMD. Recently I had the chance to travel to Haugesund and to participate in a workshop with QHSE team from Den Helder, UK and Norway. This was such a great experience to meet so many professional personnel who were all really focused in safety. MANUEL VASQUEX COTERA

THE ULTIMATE TRENCHING SPREAD The Havila Phoenix is a dynamically positioned multi-role ice class construction vessel. The Phoenix is the leading construction, installation and trenching support vessel available for subsea operations and is equipped with 250te active heave compensated offshore crane, 1500m2 deck area, 140 berth accommodation and optional 2000te carousel. This combination of features means that this one vessel can perform combined construction and trenching requirements for our customers, even in remote locations.
In addition, the vessel is permanently mobilised with the ultimate trenching spread. At the heart of this spread is the T-3200 trencher, an advanced, 3200 horse power, track based machine, equipped with a high sea state handling system. Capable of working in a combination of mechanical cutting and jetting modes, this vehicle offers a step change in burial capability for all sectors of the subsea energy industry. As the world’s largest trencher, it offers unrivalled performance in terms of speed, soil conditions and trench depth. A 1000 HP jet trenching ROV and two high specification WROV’s provide additional on board capabilities.

ALEX BARR PROJECT MANAGER
How does working on a CAPEX project differ from a normal project? The main difference is that there is no client as such - my client is the DO board! The board have a high expectation though, in the same way as an external client, so I approach the project in the same way, with communication and reporting high on the agenda.
ALEX BARR
Project Manager
What does your role as project manager involve? I am responsible for the overall delivery of the project – “The Ultimate Trenching Spread” including the structural conversion from the DO aspect and integration of our equipment / sub-systems to the newly lengthened vessel. This includes full responsibility for all phases of the project life cycle including engineering and commercial activities. I am also responsible for the CAPEX budget and the day rate budget. As PM it’s my job to ensure that the delivery is executed in-line with our DO PM procedures – On time, Within Budget and to High Quality.
What do you think is special about the Phoenix and why will it be good for Deep Ocean? The Phoenix itself is already a ‘flagship’ vessel and is built to a very high standard. What we are doing will raise the stakes even higher in terms of marketability for both DO and Havila – we will produce a very versatile and capable asset which will provide us with a competitive edge in what is a very aggressive market. What do you do when you are not project managing? I spend the majority of my spare time especially at weekends with my son Joseph age 12 which is a pleasure! In between that I am also a community volunteer and was recently presented with an award for services to the community by my local council. I help run an ABAE amateur boxing club and I am a qualified senior boxing coach with 20 plus years’ experience.
What is it that you like about working at Deep Ocean? DeepOcean is a warm and friendly organisation with some good experienced people. It was a case of hitting the ground and running on the Phoenix project and more of ‘shear face’ rather than a learning curve but we have all achieved a lot over the last year. We have some challenges in the New Year in order to take the project over the line so Christmas was a good break to come back to the project refreshed. In 2014 post Phoenix I look to further embed myself into the organisation, catch my breath and gain some experience on other projects of a different context

DEEP ENDEAVOUR Deep Endeavour is a multi purpose DP2 construction, cable-lay and subsea support vessel, with more than 1,600m2 of deck space. This vessel has covered twin-tanks for cable storage, as well as a 6m x 6m moon-pool. She has a built-in accommodation for 115px. The vessel has a small size telescopic crane with SWL 17 ton. She has been being used for supporting ROV operations, saturation diving intervention, and subsea maintenance activities, as well as IMR projects especially topsides work on platforms. The vessel is equipped with a helideck approved for Superpuma sized helicopters.
JOSE PEDRO GARCIA OFFSHORE MANAGER
I am a mechanical engineer with over 28 years’ experience and most of these spent in offshore pipe laying, ROVs and subsea equipment installation vessels. I have been married for 23 years with Andrea, a wonderful wife and lawyer and I am father to Pedro Henrique, who is studying computer science at university with a great future. In addition to my work, I take my time off to travel with my wife and see new places and cultures, our next goal is to see Norway and other Scandinavian countries. I am proud to work on the Deep Endeavour and to highlight our work here in Brazil. It is great to be part of this DeepOcean family which lies around the world.
Today Deep Endeavour is on charter to Petrobras, performing retermination of flexible pipes in Brazil. In order to perform such repairs, Deep Endevour has a system of lifting and clamping pipelines, while maintaining a simple catenary system.
With this range of work the vessel is now considered one of the most productive working for Petrobras. This productivity is combined with the practice of safe work, not having in its first year of operation any accidents with our employees.
Equipped with a ROV installer 3000 and an offshore crane with heave compensator and capacity 60t at 2000m depth, allows the vessel to carry out installation and intervention of subsea equipment, connections and disconnections of pipelines on the seabed and pipeline inspections and equipment operations submarines, that is, a multitasking vessel carrying out work both as PLSV of RSV.
Project teams managed by Offshore Managers JosĂŠ Pedro Garcia and Roger Rousselet and vessel commanded by captains Johnny Aaram and Color Russcher and work together with the policy of cooperation, working towards a single goal, maintaining a standard MPOV Deep Endeavour vessel.
Our latest and most important work is demobilization of platform for renovations where we do the pull out of flexible pipelines and abandonment on the seabed, so that the return of the unit can be quickly and easily mobilized, returning production. We are operating with loads up to 115T in depths up to 2000m.
Unfortunately we are losing Captain Color, who is going for his deserved retirement after his years of service at sea. The Deep Endeavour team would like to thank our Captain for his great service and look forward to welcoming the future Captain.

DEEPOCEAN IN MEXICO
(ACT Implementation)
2013 - A GREAT YEAR FOR DEEPOCEAN MEXICO We received several visits from different parts of the world and also some of us visited our colleagues abroad to strengthen the communication across borders. It is always good to see the face in the other side of the phone line (or email). We hope this can continue. The ROV had a successful inspection campaign with our main client, and also several good projects. Last year we expanded our customer base with one new client and hope we can continue growing this year.
MEXICO
Both our vessels received a much needed “pampering” in a Curacao “SPA”. And returned to Mexico (AC will be back soon) ready to give more years of hard work and good results. Arbol Grande was even upgraded by our client with a saturation diving system that they hope (as we do) will be used for the next two years

THOMAS HOWARD
Business Development Executive
Business Development - it’s a strange old profession. Progress can be hard to quantify, you hit a lot of dead ends and you’re forever knocking on doors to discuss opportunity’s that won’t materialise for a number of years, but it is nonetheless an integral cog in the machine and is often the forerunner of the next big project. I’ve been part of DeepOcean since 2007 and am responsible for engaging with the market, telling them who we are, what we can do, identifying future opportunities and making sure we receive the all-important invitation to tender. DeepOcean is without doubt an exciting company to work for. The breadth of subsea services we offer to key offshore markets
ensures there is plenty of variety in the day job. The introduction of the Havila Phoenix this year and a new SURF vessel in 2016 presents exciting new challenges and provides me with the opportunity to meet new people, visit new places and further develop my understanding of the subsea industry. Remember, we are all responsible for developing DeepOcean. Next time you’re in a project meeting, busy on the back deck, flicking through an industry magazine or sharing a coffee with an old college, keep your eyes and ears open as an exciting opportunity for DeepOcean may present itself.
DANNY KELKAR SENIOR PROJECTS MANAGER, SINGAPORE
Recently, I have pursued hobby of water colour painting during my leisure time. I have realised that this hobby gives me lot of pleasure and creativity and also provides a source of relaxation during weekends. The subjects are normally selected from memory and photo’s of people and landscapes visited on holidays. The photograph shown is one of my painting from a scene of small boats in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta river canal. I do not have any formal training in water colour painting but have learned it by observing my late father who was a wellestablished water colour artist in India. Darlington’s Lounge Art Gallery had also hosted an exhibition of his paintings in April-May 2008. I feel that there is a lot of room for self-improvement to the watercolour painting technique because I have noticed that my next painting turns out slightly better than the previous one as I get used to the paper, brushes, water colour mixing technique and sequence of lighter and darker shades. The study of light and shadows plays an important part in giving a 3D effect to the subject.
