HOW DOES AN INSTITUTION ROOTED IN MORE THAN 200 YEARS OF HISTORY CELEBRATE ITS LEGACY AND NEVER STOP MOVING FORWARD?

G R O W AT T H E INTERSECTION OF OLD

AND NEW

Learning doesn’t always come from getting the best grade or scoring the winning goal. It’s about what you gain by being tested, being doubted, or even failing at times. Deerfield is a community of thinkers who collaborate, experiment, and explore remarkable ideas that have the power to change the world. In the pages that follow, seize the opportunity to go off the beaten path, challenge conventional thinking, and start something great. 3

AT DEERFIELD, LEARNING HAPPENS ANYWHERE YOU AND IDEAS INTERSECT. ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY + ART 4

THE QUEST TO LEARN

Deerfield promotes a broad, modern curriculum that sparks collaboration, curiosity, and creativity. During your time here, you’ll have the opportunity to explore a wide spectrum of topics. AND IF YOU’RE LIKE MANY STUDENTS, YOU’LL SOON DISCOVER TALENTS AND INTERESTS YOU DIDN’T KNOW YOU HAD.

You’ll also find yourself connecting the dots between classes. You might see how a particular piece of literature you studied in Jazz Age and the Lost Generation impacted the concepts you learned about in 20th Century World History. Or perhaps you’ll realize how the logic of computer science helps you decode Arabic. Or maybe Film Studies will inspire you to take Studio Production. The possibilities are great!

NEVER GETS OLD

6

“ Learning happens best in a community that reflects the diversity of this nation and the world.” DR. JOHN P.N. AUSTIN HEAD OF SCHOOL

7

THE DOOR

The door of John Williams House is the symbol of the Academy (and a frequent background for selfies). This wonder of architectural design represents our heritage and tradition.

8

“BE WORTHY OF YOUR HERITAGE”

Our motto carries extraordinary significance for students and alumni alike: “Be Worthy of Your Heritage.” It demonstrates that we honor our past, even as it commands us to carry our core values into the future. When you take your place at Deerfield, you take on the responsibility to shape your own legacy and to establish what an education means to you. Whether it’s your pursuit of deeper intellectual understanding, your service to the community, or your commitment to addressing the world’s most pressing problems, your actions define your character and your heritage— and in the process, you define Deerfield as well. THE MARK IS YOU RS TO MAKE .

9

THE MARK I S YO U R S TO MAKE .

THE MAIN SCHOOL BUILDING

Home to Admission, history classes, class deans, and traditions like Friday cookies and cocoa, the Main School Building is where most students start their Deerfield journey.

A L B A N Y R OA D

Albany Road takes you to class, to the playing fields, to the Dining Hall, and to your dorm. You’ll traverse this thoroughfare a thousand times, crossing paths with friends and faculty. Our community is “device-free” when walking campus, so you’re sure to encounter friendly faces.

13

TH E LOWE R LE VE L

With more than 90 acres of athletics fields, the Lower Level is where athletes turn it up on game day. Students, family, friends, and faculty gather to cheer on their favorite teams— “bleeding green” with Deerfield pride.

THE GREER

Where else can you meet up with friends to grab a fro-yo and fries? The Greer Store is where students regularly hang out and relax during free periods, after classes, and on weekends.

14

THE HESS CENTER

From the start of classes until curfew, the Hess Center’s art studios, photo labs, practice rooms, and performance spaces are alive with activity. Visiting artists connect with students and faculty—sharing their mastery of the arts and their passion for the work.

THE SMALL LOOP

Ideal for quiet contemplation or some fresh air with friends, the Small Loop is a two-mile, unpaved farm road that leads you past fields, barns, and the Deerfield River before connecting back to campus. Even if you set out alone, chances are you’ll bump into someone you know.

T H E KO C H C E N T E R

The Koch Center is the nexus of science, math, and technology at Deerfield. Designed to promote interdisciplinary collaboration, it houses extensive labs, workshops, classrooms—and even a planetarium!

15

TH E B OY D E N LI B R A RY

This research hub offers spaces for independent and group study. The Boyden Library is home to our Academic Dean, an innovation laboratory, global studies, and College Advising. (And yes, you’ll still find more than 50,000 books!)

16

THE COMMON ROOM

Daily life intersects in dormitory common rooms. Enjoy an evening snack, play pingpong, make weekend plans, or just hang out. You’ll form tight bonds with students from different backgrounds and cultures— and you’ll get to know the faculty members who live with you, too.

17

THE ROCK

Finding your way to the top of the Rock is a Deerfield rite of passage. On a clear day, the view extends to New York and Vermont. And part of the experience is how you get there: straight up, on a jeep road, or via a network of trails.

THE DINING HALL

It’s a Deerfield tradition: Students and faculty gather in the Dining Hall for family-style meals. On the menu: grass-fed beef, local produce, vegetarian fare, and lively conversations that continue long after the table has been cleared.

ASK G R E AT QUESTIONS Your generation faces incredible challenges: climate change, food and water security, social

the future. This responsibility shouldn’t be taken lightly—and it begins with asking great questions.

In Deerfield classrooms, we’ve got you covered: from English 200: Voice and Vision to Math 705: Linear Algebra, the depth and breadth of course offerings gives you the opportunity to enroll in classes that are appropriate

performances and exhibitions—is one of those Deerfield traditions that takes learning to the next level.

SEARCH FOR THE ANSWERS

Deerfield’s capstone courses and upper-level seminars provide the opportunity for students to examine questions of local or global significance. A capstone often involves a multipronged approach to interdisciplinary study, connecting subjects across the entire academic foundation. No matter the query or project, the goal is the same: to help you reach a higher level of critical thinking, analysis, and synthesis.

TAKE THE UNEXPECTED COURSE

Go beyond the core curriculum and explore a subject that’s off the beaten path. Deerfield offers extraordinary courses in STEM, humanities, and the arts—all designed to open your mind and help you dig deeper into a topic. For instance, try your hand at an examination of Political Philosophy, Experimental Neurology, or Global H2O.

“When students want to go beyond the curriculum, we support them.” WADE INTO BIO500: AP BIOLOGY AT THE RIVER

IVORY HILLS ACADEMIC DEAN, SCIENCE TEACHER

Year two finds you making connections outside of your class and your dorm. Hone your talents in clubs that hold special interest for you. Broaden your circle by exploring the larger idea of community, and examine your personal responsibility to give back. Opportunities for global travel help BETTER THAN THE COMFORT expand ZONE your horizons.

Caitlin Sugita ’18 admits that she is just about the last person you’d expect to eat a bug, but when she had to choose a topic she was passionate about for her Research in Sustainability seminar, Caitlin chose entomophagy: the eating of insects. Much like a master’s thesis, this seminar encourages independent research and interdisciplinary acuity.

DE E RFIE LD. E DU/ VIDEOS/E NGINE E RING

Mae Emerson has had a lot of opportunities at Deerfield: from being a part of the Advanced Dance Ensemble to playing varsity soccer, ice hockey, and lacrosse. She’s also been able to try a lot of new things, such as building an electric bike with her Physics II Electric Vehicle Engineering class partner, Connor Finemore ’18. It all starts with research...

23

THE PATH OF MOST PERSISTENCE

It’s so annoying: Machines don’t always seem to do what we ask of them. When Mae Emerson and Connor Finemore joined forces to build an electric bike to help with recycling work on campus, the project was riddled with episodes of failure— including a stubborn bicycle chain that just wouldn’t cooperate! But in the end, this pair of analytical thinkers mastered the communication, collaboration, and perseverance needed to produce an “EV” that really rolls.

In an effort to understand how the pursuit of the distinctive “American dream” helped to shape the culture and literature of the United States, Gerry Alexandre ’19 says that the piece of literature that spoke most to him was Thomas Paine’s “Common Sense.” And when it came time for Gerry to write and memorize his junior declamation, he focused on his own family’s distinctive American dream.

Students take part in Miles for Meals, an event to raise money for local food banks.

FIND YOUR INSPIRATION / PERFORMING ARTS AT DEERFIELD

PERFORM WITH A PA S S I O N

Do you play an instrument or enjoy drawing? Go en pointe? Long for the bright lights of the stage? Whether you’re a seasoned performer or your artistic endeavors are just beginning, Deerfield has a spot for you. With over 50 different classes in the performing and visual arts, you’re sure to nurture or find your artistic side. The arts contribute greatly to campus life, and whether it’s the Student Choreography Showcase or an opening in the von Auersperg Gallery, friends and classmates will be there to appreciate your talents.

CABARET

Deerfield’s production of Cabaret wasn’t without challenges. Set in 1931 Berlin and focusing on the raucous nightlife at the seedy yet seductive Kit Kat Klub, the musical included technical complexities, a large set that towered over the stage, and a student orchestra providing live accompaniment. The production also called for performers like Abby Lupi ’18, who could balance acting, singing, and dancing.

A chamber group has no conductor, so teamwork is essential: “The teachers get us started, and then we go off on our own. For an Elgar piece, for instance, we discussed how to translate the feeling of ‘sinister trees’ into the way we play the music, such as how the bow contacts the strings. We try things and work them up until they’re conveying what we want to express . . . There’s a big social aspect to this. Nobody’s the leader, everybody’s a co-leader, and that’s essential to our success.” NATE STEELE ’17

COCURRICS

31

Each term, students are required to participate in a COCURRICULAR ACTIVITY . What is a cocurricular, you ask?

They are organized programs that take place outside of the classroom. Cocurriculars support the pursuit of excellence in athletics, the arts, and the local community; they are often collaborative and inclusive experiences. Your “cocurric” might be varsity soccer in the fall, afternoon studio time in the winter, and community service at a local elementary school in the spring. No matter what, cocurriculars are an important part of everybody’s day; they foster teamwork, fun, growth, leadership, and an understanding of your role within a larger group with a common goal. DEERFIELD.EDU/COCURRICULAR

The Student Choreography Showcase provides both novice and experienced dancers a chance to develop complete dances— entirely on their own.

“There is a ton of opportunity to get involved in the performing arts,” says Mila Castleman ’18. From classes during the academic day to cocurriculars to clubs, Mila is a veteran of Deerfield’s dance and theater programs. She also says that after her years as a Deerfield student, she’s more willing to step out of her comfort zone and take that extra step— on the stage and in the classroom.

SERVICE

“ The test of worth of any school . . . is the record of service of her alumni.” FRANK L. BOYDEN HEADMASTER, 1902 – 1968

Deerfield students are committed to the local community, but they also travel abroad to make a difference in developing countries, such as the Dominican Republic and Tanzania.

39

It’s not part of any curriculum, and you can’t learn it from a book, but it is woven into the fabric of our school. Day in and day out, Deerfield students recognize the responsibility they have to care for their community—and the world around them. Whether it’s a random act of kindness or the concerted effort of many to help just a few, the experience of giving back drives us to see beyond our own worldview and appreciate our interconnectedness.

STRONGER THROUGH SERVICE

On and off campus, Deerfield students and employees come together to serve the community—whether it’s to curb hunger, alleviate inequality, or encourage the next generation to learn. You’ll find students volunteering at Second Helpings or at a local elementary school. Every term, each of our athletics teams performs a service project. And then there are times when the whole school moves to action—for a blood drive, the Relay For Life, or an impromptu fundraiser.

GROWING GREEN

When Deerfield’s original greenhouse was bursting at the seams a couple of years ago, an adjoining “hoop house” was added to support cocurricular and academic work among students interested in growing plants for food and study. Under the guidance of a horticulturist, students help to grow a wide variety of fresh herbs and veggies, such as arugula, kale, spinach, peppers, carrots, and even the occasional eggplant. Bounty from the greenhouses makes its way to the Dining Hall to supplement what’s purchased from outside vendors. It’s a nutritious and delicious experience for everyone!

RESPECTING DEERFIELD, RESPECTING EARTH

When you throw something away, where does it go? That’s the question Deerfield students pondered when they established Think 80/20, the environmental campaign that encourages everyone on campus to reuse, recycle, and compost. From the hydration stations around campus to our annual competition for greater energy efficiency, campus sustainability happens locally—but it’s a model with global ambition.

Think 80/20 encourages the recycling of everything from pizza boxes to old cell phone parts, with the goal of diverting 80% of campus waste away from the landfill.

Getting the first TEDxDeerfieldAcademy from concept to reality was no small task. Over the course of 18 months, three enterprising students organized the entire event. From recruiting volunteers and securing a venue to finding a worthy theme and promoting it, no detail was too small. Senior proctors bond with ninth- and tenth-grade students in the halls where they live— helping them adjust to dorm life and serving as role models and sounding boards. More than mentors, proctors set a positive tone for their halls and form meaningful connections with their proctees. Dorms also often have “feeds” that can feature everything from ice cream treats to tacos.

DAILY LIFE

DINING HALL

YOUR CLASS DAY

Have a seat! Seven times a week, students and faculty gather for family-style sit-down meals. Your table assignment changes every few weeks, so you get to meet a wide variety of students and teachers. Students take turns waiting on tables, and if it’s your birthday, prepare to be serenaded! On Wednesdays (game days!) and some special occasions, a “walk-through” lunch or dinner is served buffet-style.

Monday through Friday classes begin at 8:30 am with seven periods running to 3:05 pm. On Wednesdays, after School Meeting, cocurriculars begin at 1:30 pm. With an average class size of 12, you’ll have opportunities to actively participate in your classes, and your teachers will know you well. You’ll also have a faculty advisor who will help guide your academic experience.

Every Wednesday, the entire student body and employees meet for announcements and performances. School Meetings are a chance to open your mind, be heard, and contribute—but they are also an opportunity to hear guest speakers, watch performances, and address topics of local and global significance.

SCHOOL MEETING EVENINGS

You will experience moments of togetherness every day at Deerfield —whether it’s cheering in the stands on the Lower Level, hanging out in “The Greer,” or greeting friends and faculty on Albany Road. Our spirit is fueled by shared moments, curiosity, hard work, and—most of all—fun!

BOARDING SCHOOL

101

At boarding school, students gain access to an abundance of opportunities, people, and facilities. They embrace a wide range of challenges and experiences, including rigorous coursework, independence, influential role models, lifelong friendships, extraordinary resources, and exposure to peers from vastly different backgrounds. Boarding school offers an education that cannot be replicated elsewhere.

THE (EXCEPTIONAL) BASICS OF BOARDING While boarding schools offer many similar experiences and amenities— such as living in dorms, eating together in dining halls, and socializing in common rooms—no two schools are exactly alike. Here are some of the “exceptional basics” that you will find at most boarding schools.
