The program will feature a Cuban Overture, written after Gershwin’s visit to Havana in 1932; Lullaby for Strings, highlighting the spectacular strings of the ESO; and 2nd Rhapsody, which may be the most experimental of his works. The concert will also hold Rhapsody in Blue, described by Gershwin as a “musical kaleidoscope of America, of our vast melting pot.” The program concludes with his iconic tone poem American in Paris, which depicts busy Parisian streets traversed by an American tourist in the 1920s.

How the Illinois Budget Crisis Affects Some Programs!

ACES: Caregiver Support Are you caring for your spouse, parent, or other relative? If so, you may feel tired, overwhelmed, stressed, sad, or frustrated. Perhaps you need caregiving tips or leads on resources. Studies show that caregivers reduce stress, have improved health, and provide better care when part of a caregiver support group. The group is not disease specific, it focuses on the caregiver. Join our vital group to meet others in our community who, like you, are caring for an older adult loved one. We meet on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month at 1pm in the Patty Turner Center Library. Drop in. FREE. For more info call Margie at PTC 847-940-4010. Do care obligations keep you from attending our Support Groups? Here’s a solution! Through our treasured partnership with Faith In Action Volunteers, we are able to offer some respite options. On-site supervision of your loved one in our front lobby may be available during the Alzheimer and ACES meetings. Care recipients must be comfortable being apart from their loved one, have appropriate behavior, and be able to use the restroom on their own. Also, on a more limited basis, a trained Faith in Action volunteer may come to your home, if needed, while you attend the ACES meeting. For both services, prescreening and reservations are required. There is never a fee. Please call Margie at PTC for eligibility requirements and more information.

Dementia Support Group Peggy Rubenstein of the Alzheimer’s Association hosts a monthly group at the PTC. It is for family caregivers of individuals in the middle to later stages of dementia. Meetings offer emotional and educational support as well as camaraderie. Join us on the 1st Monday of each month at 2 pm. Just drop in! It’s FREE and open to all family members. For more info contact the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Illinois 800-272-3900 or go to alz.org/Illinois and click on Support Groups.

In case you haven’t heard, the state is no longer mailing reminders about license plate registration. But, if you’re delinquent, you still get a ticket!! Check your sticker’s expiration date! You can request the Secretary of State to send you email reminders. Just Google “Secretary of State Illinois Green” and you’ll find the website, then enter your vehicle registration and PIN#. The Benefit Access Program (License Plate Discount & Senior Rides Free Card) is also affected. The state is currently running TWO months behind with processing. Allow yourself enough time to get your benefit!! Many folks, through no fault of their own, have lost the benefit or have had to pay late fees. Check when your BAP eligibility expires, or have Margie at PTC look it up for you. It is suggested you renew at the first opportunity, which is three months prior to expiration. For those of you unfamiliar with the BAP: One must be 65 or older--or over 16 and totally disabled; AND have an annual income from all sources under $27,610 for singles or $36,635 for couples. The application is good for two years. ALL applications and documentation must be submitted online; no paper forms exist. You can do it yourself at the Illinois Department on Aging’s website. Deerfield residents and PTC members can make an appointment with Margie and she will do it for you!

NEW! Low Vision Group Forming! A new member with low vision has offered to facilitate this new group. She has experience leading a very successful group in the Del Webb Community and is excited to bring her knowledge and experience to the PTC. This group will share meaningful information through enlightening and interactive "learn, listen, and laugh" programs. It will reflect the common and unique lifestyles of those with low vision to give people the tools to live independent, productive, happy lives. If you can read this without magnification, tell your friends who can't! The group will meet every other month, has no cost, is open to non-member, and is expected to begin in early 2017! Call Margie in Social Services if you are interested.

The Patty Turner Center was built in honor and in memory of Patty Turner, wife of Fred Turner. Both Fred and Patty were longtime residents of Deerfield. Warm, compassionate and funny, Patty was a great friend to everyone she met. Patty’s interest in seniors began when she founded a ukulele band at the Deerfield Park District’s Jewett Park Field House in 1990. Taking the name, the Hummers & Strummers, the group became an instant success; all because of Patty’s extraordinary enthusiasm, joy for life and love of music. Patty was always passionate about seniors, and, along with many others, advocated for a senior center to be built in the community. All would come to fruition when the Patty Turner Center would open its doors in 2003; becoming an integral part of the community and Deerfield Park District. Since her passing, Patty’s legacy with the Patty Turner Center continues to live on; not only in spirit, but in smiles, laughter and music.
