Dementia Education Series Continues

At Your Service

You can still join us for the final two workshops in our popular Dementia Education Series. The remaining sessions teach productive approaches to challenging behaviors, such as refusing to eat or shower. Participants will explore activities that encourage loved ones to be active and engaged both physically and emotionally from early to late stages of the illness. Classes meet from 1-2:30 pm on the 3rd Wednesday of the month. FREE. Each is unique and valuable:

Our part-time staff member, Margie Fischer, M.A., offers a variety of helpful information for older adults and their families. Get information and referral on topics including in-home services, community resources, help with applying for benefits, Medicare information, caregiver support, and more. Margie is generally in the office on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Stop in or phone (847) 940-4010.Service is friendly, free, and confidential. This program is a partnership between West Deerfield Township and the Deerfield Park District.

ACES: Adult Caregiver Education & Support Join our wonderful group of family caregivers! Studies show that caregivers reduce their stress, enjoy improved health, and provide better care when receiving support. ACES is a group of spouses and adult children of older adults who gather for valuable information on relevant topics, leads on resources, and to share concerns and tips with other caregivers. You do not have to live with your care recipient to be in a caregiver role. Whether you are seeking information on available resources and services, are feeling stress or sadness from caring for a loved one… ACES can help. Come meet others in our community who, like you, are caring for an older adult. We meet from 1:00-2:30 on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month in the PTC library. FREE. If your care obligations keep you from attending ACES, we have solutions! Through our treasured partnership with Faith in Action Volunteers, we offer two respite options! On-site supervision at PTC is available for your loved one while you attend our ACES meeting. Care recipients must be comfortable being apart from their loved one, have appropriate behavior, and be able to use the restroom on their own. Pre-screening and reservations are required. A trained Faith In Action respite volunteer can come to your home, if needed, while you attend the meeting. This is based on availability and prescreening is required. Both respite options never have a fee. Please call Margie Fischer at PTC for details. 16

Participants receive a workbook and supplemental materials so please RSVP to Margie to reserve your place. Space is limited to ensure a small group experience. The series is facilitated by Ryan Krueger, LCSW. Presented by Home Instead Senior Care.

PTC SHIP has record enrollment season! Our SHIP staff completed over 90 Medicare Part D evaluations during the 7 weeks of the annual Medicare Open Enrollment Period!! That’s almost triple what we did in 2011. All told, the team saved beneficiaries hundreds (even thousands) of dollars!! Despite having four hardworking volunteer counselors, we were unable to meet the demand for appointments…That’s why it is so important to remember to schedule your appointment early in the season. We’d like to recognize our SHIP Counselors Phil Dlouhy, John Baran, Jane Smith, and Esther Craven for their dedication, professionalism, and cheerfulness. Even when the internet-based Plan Finder was moving slowly, they got the job done! THANK YOU!!

TWO Scams in our Area!

Social Services Increase Your Access to the World West Deerfield Township has a program for residents with various disabilities aimed at improving their access to the community. Grants of up to $1000 per household per year may be awarded to residents to help meet specific needs which often impede accessibility at home and in the community. Expenses which may qualify for this program include home remodeling/adaptation, mobility equipment, communication devices, etc. Older adults are encouraged to apply. The program is intended to assist WDT residents with the greatest financial need, but there is no stated income limit. Interested older adults may call Margie to ask questions about the program. Applications are made to WDT and kept strictly confidential. Forms are available at the Township office, the Patty Turner Center or online at westdeerfieldtownship.org. Grants are awarded on a quarterly basis. The next deadline is March 31, 2015. For more information call West Deerfield Township or Social Service at the PTC

Answers to your Medicare Questions The PTC is a host site for the Illinois Department on Aging’s SHIP (Senior Health Insurance Program). How convenient is that!? SHIP is a national program that provides FREE counseling and information on: • Enrollment • Prescription Drug Plans • Supplemental Plans • Subsidies to offset the cost of Medicare • Claims and Appeals • Trained volunteers are available to answer your questions. Appointments are required and can be made by calling the Front Desk or Margie in Social Services. Smart beneficiaries use SHIP because “The Best Choice is an Educated Choice!”

The Lake County Treasurer’s Office is alerting homeowners to beware of a letter claiming that the County will take their home if payment is not immediately made on delinquent taxes. In each of the cases reported, the homeowner was not delinquent. If you receive this letter, do not take any action. If you want to check on the status of your real estate taxes, call the Treasurer’s Office at 847-377-2323 or check online at www.lakecountyil.gov/treasurer. Do NOT contact the person listed in the letter. An active phone scam is targeting Deerfield residents, including several PTC members! Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with driver’s license revocation. The scammers use elaborate methods to deceive, like reciting the last four digits of a victim’s Social Security Number, using an IRS toll-free number on caller ID, and sending bogus emails seemingly from the IRS. If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be the IRS, HANG UP. The Federal government never calls; they only use the postal service. If you already fell for it, here’s what you should do: •

Contact the Federal Trade Commission at www.ftc.org and click the blue box labeled Consumer Complaints. Add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.

Call to report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 800-366-4484.

Additionally, if you have mistakenly provided confidential information to one of these callers, contact the Deerfield Police Department to make a report to protect your assets, at 847945-8636
