Medicare Open Enrollment October 15-December 7

At Your Service!

It’s important to investigate which Drug Plan will provide you the best coverage for the best price in the coming year. Open Enrollment is the one time each year that all beneficiaries can shop for Drug Plans. The new plan becomes effective January 1. “Don’t feel program loyalty,” advises Sandy Leith, Director of the Illinois Department on Aging’s SHIP Program. With the sharp price increases seen in the pharmaceutical industry, checking the formulary and cost is more important than ever. You can do it on your own by using Medicare’s Drug Plan Finder -- we are offering a DIY class (see below) -- or call for an appointment with one of our SHIP counselors. Don’t delay, as slots always fill up! Last year we assisted about 100 people! When coming to your appointment, please bring your Medicare card, name of your current plan, and a list of your current medications, including dose and frequency. “The Best Choice in an Educated Choice!”

Our part-time staff member, Margie Fischer, M.A., offers a variety of helpful information to members of our community. Topics include in-home services, community resources, help with applying for benefits, Medicare information, caregiver support and more. Margie has compiled a handy resource booklet tailored to our local area. The 40-page Guide to Community Services for Older Adults and Their Families is available for free at the Patty Turner Center. It can be mailed out upon request. Margie is generally in the office on Tuesday and Wednesday. Stop in, call, leave a voicemail, or send an email to Margie@pattyturnercenter.org. PTC Social Services is a partnership between West Deerfield Township and the Deerfield Park District. Service is friendly, free, and confidential.

Grant Money Available! The West Deerfield Township Accessibility Grant for disabled residents is aimed at improving quality of life through increased access to the community. Grants up to $1000 per household per year may be awarded. Expenses which may qualify for this program include things like home modifications, mobility equipment, adaptive communication devices, some therapies, etc… Older adults are encouraged to apply!! The program is intended to assist those WDT residents with the greatest financial need, but there is no stated income limit. Application forms are available at PTC, the township office, and online. Grants are awarded quarterly; the next application deadline is September 30th. For more info, call the Township at 847-9450614 or PTC Social Services.

DIY (Do-It-Yourself) Part D Class! Smart Medicare beneficiaries know they should reevaluate and--if indicated--change their Part D prescription plans every year. But how? For the first time, we are offering a free, hands-on class about using the Medicare Drug Plan Finder. Participants will be guided how to find it, enter their drugs, save their work for later reference, interpret the results, and select and sign up for a plan! After the info session, registered participants will have the opportunity to sit down at the computers in our library and try it out with the guidance of our SHIP staff. Pre-requisite: All class participants MUST know how to use a computer and the internet.

Caruso “GrandFriends” Fund There is a small fund available to assist lower income older adults to pay a portion of their membership and program fees at the PTC. The GrandFriends Fund was originated and is supported by the fundraising efforts of the students at Caruso Middle School. Margie can provide eligibility and program information. Participation is strictly confidential.

ACES: Caregiver Support

Peggy Rubenstein of the Alzheimer’s Association hosts a monthly group at the PTC. It is for family caregivers of individuals in the middle to later stages of dementia. Meetings offer emotional and educational support as well as camaraderie. Join us on the 1st Monday of each month at 2 pm. Just drop in! It’s FREE and open to all family members. For more info contact the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Illinois 800-272-3900 or go to alz.org/Illinois and click on Support Groups.

How the Illinois Budget Crisis Affects Some Programs!

Are you caring for your spouse, parent, or other relative? If so, you may feel tired, overwhelmed, stressed, sad, or frustrated. Perhaps you need caregiving tips or leads on resources. Studies show that caregivers reduce stress, have improved health, and provide better care when part of a caregiver support group. The group is not disease specific, it focuses on the caregiver. Join our vital group to meet others in our community who, like you, are caring for an older adult loved one. We meet on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month at 1pm in the Patty Turner Center Library. Drop in. FREE. For more info call Margie at PTC 847-940-4010 Please note that ACES will not be meeting on Yom Kippur (10/12) or Thanksgiving Eve (11/23)

Do care obligations keep you from attending our Support Groups? Here’s a solution! Through our treasured partnership with Faith In Action Volunteers, we are able to offer some respite options. On-site supervision of your loved one in our front lobby may be available during the Alzheimer and ACES meetings. Care recipients must be comfortable being apart from their loved one, have appropriate behavior, and be able to use the restroom on their own. Also, on a more limited basis, a trained Faith in Action volunteer may come to your home, if needed, while you attend the ACES meeting. For both services, pre-

The Benefit Access Program (License Plate Discount & Senior Rides Free Card) is also affected. The state is currently running TWO months behind with processing. Allow yourself enough time to get your benefit!! Many folks, through no fault of their own, have lost the benefit or have had to pay late fees. Check when your BAP eligibility expires, or have Margie at PTC look it up for you. It is suggested you renew at the first opportunity, which is three months prior to expiration. For those of you unfamiliar with the BAP: One must be 65 or older--or over 16 and totally disabled; AND have an annual income from all sources under $27,610 for singles or $36,635 for couples. The application is good for two years. ALL applications and documentation must be submitted online; no paper forms exist. You can do it yourself at the Illinois Department on Aging’s website. Deerfield residents and PTC members can make an appointment with Margie and she will do it for you!
