The world has enjoyed a love affair with Carol Burnett for over fifty years. Her peerless, fearless character acting and delightful, self-effacing personality made her Lucille Ball’s rightful successor as the red-headed Queen of Television Comedy. Carol can do it all -sing, dance, act, and make you laugh. But it was the laughs that led her from hardship and poverty to becoming the shining star that audiences fell head over heels for. Take a stroll into that famous little circle of light as Hilary, and pianist Beckie Menzie, guides your tour of Carol Burnett’s life and laughs and brings back some of her most memorable characters.

Topics include in-home services, community resources, help with applying for benefits, Medicare information, caregiver support and more. Margie has compiled a handy resource booklet tailored to our local area. The 40-page Guide to Community Services for Older Adults and Their Families is available for free at the Patty Turner Center. It can be mailed out upon request. Margie is generally in the office on Tuesday and Wednesday. Stop in, call, leave a voicemail, or send an email to Margie@pattyturnercenter.org. PTC Social Services is a partnership between West Deerfield Township and the Deerfield Park District. Service is friendly, free, and confidential.

Expenses which may qualify for this program include things like home modifications, mobility equipment, adaptive communication devices, some therapies, etc…Older adults are encouraged to apply!! PTC is a host site for the Illinois Department on Aging’s SHIP (Senior Health Insurance Program). How convenient is that!? SHIP is a national program that provides FREE counseling and information on • Enrollment • Prescription Drug Plans • Supplemental Plans • Subsidies to offset the cost of Medicare • Claims and Appeals Trained volunteers are ready to answer your questions. Appointments are required and can be made by calling the Front Desk or Margie in Social Services. Smart beneficiaries use SHIP because “The Best Choice is an Educated Choice!”

MOON Informs of Observation Status Our Social Service office has had an upswing in callers shocked and upset because their nursing home/rehab center bill is not covered by Medicare. Many are aware of the "3 midnights" requirement, but don't realize they must be admitted as an in-patient (Part A), not under observation status. Of course, it's easy to confuse: After spending several nights in the hospital, it’s logical to assume one is admitted, but that is not the case. Beginning March 3rd, hospitals will be required present the Medicare Outpatient Observation Notice (MOON) verbally and in writing to all Medicare beneficiaries who receive at least 24 hours of observation. Observation is out-patient (Part B) and significantly impacts how Medicare pays for medical services. This will not change the determination process, but will at least inform the patient so they are aware of their status in a timely way.

ACES: Caregiver Support

Receiving these two benefits begin with filing one application, the Illinois Benefit Access Application. Are you eligible? One must be 65 or older--or over 16 and totally disabled; AND have an annual income form all sources under $27,610 for singles or $36,635 for couples. The application is good for two years. ALL applications/documentation must be submitted online. You can do it yourself or make an appointment with Margie and she will do if for you! If you are already on the program, allow enough time for your renewal. Renewal may be done three months before your current BAA expires. The State is currently running two months behind on processing... allow yourself enough time to get your benefit!

Are you caring for your spouse, parent, or other relative? If so, you may feel tired, overwhelmed, stressed, sad, or frustrated. Perhaps you need caregiving tips or leads on resources. Studies show that caregivers reduce stress, have improved health, and provide better care when part of a caregiver support group. The group is not disease specific, it focuses on the caregiver. Join our vital group to meet others in our community who, like you, are caring for an older adult loved one. We meet on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month at 1pm in the Patty Turner Center Library. Drop in. FREE. For more info call Margie at PTC 847-940-4010. Do care obligations keep you from attending our Support Groups? Here’s a solution! Through our treasured partnership with Faith In Action Volunteers, we are able to offer some respite options. On-site supervision of your loved one in our front lobby may be available during the Alzheimer and ACES meetings. Care recipients must be comfortable being apart from their loved one, have appropriate behavior, and be able to use the restroom on their own. Also, on a more limited basis, a trained Faith in Action volunteer may come to your home, if needed, while you attend the ACES meeting. For both services, prescreening and reservations are required. There is never a fee. Please call Margie at PTC for eligibility requirements and more information.

Dementia Support Group Peggy Rubenstein of the Alzheimer’s Association hosts a monthly group at the PTC. It is for family caregivers of individuals in the middle to later stages of dementia. Meetings offer emotional and educational support as well as camaraderie. Join us on the 1st Monday of each month at 2 pm. Just drop in! It’s FREE and open to all family members. For more info contact the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Illinois 800-272-3900 or go to alz.org/Illinois and click on Support Groups.

It is suggested you renew at the first opportunity, which is three months prior to expiration. For those of you unfamiliar with the BAP: One must be 65 or older--or over 16 and totally disabled; AND have an annual income from all sources under $27,610 for singles or $36,635 for couples. The application is good for two years. ALL applications and documentation must be submitted online; no paper forms exist. You can do it yourself at the Illinois Department on Aging’s website. Deerfield residents and PTC members can make an appointment with Margie and she will do it for you!

Thank You, SHIP Volunteers! Our intrepid SHIP volunteers--Phil Dlouhy, Mike Hill, and Jane Smith--assisted over a hundred people with selecting and enrolling in Medicare Part D (drug plans) during Open Enrollment. Each of them found it very rewarding to help people choose the best plan AND save lots of money. Our new "Do-It-Yourself Part D" Class was filled to capacity and each "student" said they had a great experience, learned tips, and gained confidence how to do the process on their own. None of this could have been accomplished with our three SHIP volunteers!! THANK YOU!
