The Salem witch trials took place in colonial Massachusetts between 1692 and 1693. More than 200 people were accused of practicing witchcraft-the Devil’s magic, and 20 were executed. Eventually, the colony admitted the trials were a mistake and compensated the families of those convicted. Since then, the story of the trials has become synonymous with paranoia and injustice, and it continues to beguile the popular imagination more than 300 years later. Come hear Betsey Means re-tell the story of the Salem trials in this theatrical dramatization.

ACES: Adult Caregiver Education & Support
Social Services At Your Service
Join our wonderful group of family caregivers! Studies show that caregivers reduce their stress, enjoy improved health, and provide better care when receiving support. ACES is a group of spouses and adult children of older adults who gather for valuable information on relevant topics, leads on resources, and to share concerns and tips with other caregivers. You do not have to live with your care recipient to be in a caregiver role. Whether you are seeking information on available resources and services, are feeling stress or sadness from caring for a loved one… ACES can help. Come meet others in our community who, like you, are caring for an older adult. We meet from 1:00-2:30 on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month in the PTC library. FREE. If your care obligations keep you from attending ACES, we have solutions! Through our treasured partnership with Faith in Action Volunteers, we offer two respite options! On-site supervision at PTC is available for your loved one while you attend our ACES meeting. Care recipients must be comfortable being apart from their loved one, have appropriate behavior, and be able to use the restroom on their own. Pre-screening and reservations are required. A trained Faith In Action respite volunteer can come to your home, if needed, while you attend the meeting. This is based on availability and pre-screening is required. Both respite options never have a fee. Please call Margie Fischer at PTC for details.
Our part-time staff member, Margie Fischer, M.A., offers a variety of helpful information for older adults and their families. Get information and referral on topics including in-home services, community resources, help with applying for benefits, Medicare information, caregiver support, and more. Margie is generally in the office on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Stop in or phone (847) 9404010.Service is friendly, free, and confidential. This program is a partnership between West Deerfield Township and the Deerfield Park District.

You can do it yourself at: http://www.illinois.gov/aging/BenefitsAccess/Pages/d efault.aspx or, you can make an appointment with Margie and she will do it for you! Just call for an appointment and to learn what documents are needed.

Caruso “GrandFriends” Fund Did you know there is a small fund available to assist lower income older adults to pay a portion of their membership and program fees at the Patty Turner Center? Margie can provide eligibility and program information. Participation is strictly confidential.

Not “Chicken Soup” for the Caregiver’s Soul
Increase Your Access to the World West Deerfield Township has a program for residents with various disabilities aimed at improving their access to the community. Grants of up to $1000 per household per year may be awarded to residents to help meet specific needs which often impede accessibility at home and in the community. Expenses which may qualify for this program include home remodeling/adaptation, mobility equipment, communication devices, etc. Older adults are encouraged to apply. The program is intended to assist WDT residents with the greatest financial need, but there is no stated income limit. Interested older adults may call Margie to ask questions about the program. Applications are made to WDT and kept strictly confidential. Forms are available at the Township office, the Patty Turner Center or online at westdeerfieldtownship.org. Grants are awarded on a quarterly basis. The next deadline is September 30, 2014. For more information call West Deerfield Township or Social Service at the Patty Turner Center.
Our annual ACES Appreciation Luncheon is changing things up a bit! This year our early celebration of National Family Caregivers Month will gather over cheesy, gooey pizza and crisp salad. Desserts, too, of course! Our caregivers are special heroes and it is our pleasure to treat them to a special afternoon. This free event is at 1 pm on October 8 and is open exclusively to ACES members and ACES “alumni,” those former members who inspired us in the past. RSVPs and questions to Margie 847-940-4010. The lunch is being provided in part by Home Instead Senior Care.
“Senior Rides Free Card” News Many of you recently received a letter from the RTA about your Senior Rides Free card. Here are two info items that may be of interest: It is likely you need to take NO ACTION. The letter reads as though pass holders must initiate a new Benefit Access Application (BAA). One needs only to make sure that their BAA is current. (Your original BAA confirmation states when your renewal is due. If you don’t know, Margie at PTC can look this up for you.) If your BAA is up-to-date, you don’t have to do anything: no BAA, no RTA application, no new photo--the RTA will automatically send you a new pass! The Chicago Tribune reports the RTA has temporarily extended the expiration dates on about 100,000 free-ride permits due to a surge of new applications and renewal requests. A three-month extension will cover free-ride permits set to expire June 30 and Sept. 30. Permits expiring June 30 will now be usable until Sept. 30; those expiring Sept. 30 will remain valid until Nov. 30. No action is necessary on the part of the permit-holder, RTA officials said.
Answers to your Medicare Questions PTC is a host site for the Illinois Department on Aging’s SHIP (Senior Health Insurance Program). How convenient is that!? SHIP is a national program that provides FREE counseling and information on Enrollment Prescription Drug Plans Supplemental Plans Subsidies to offset the cost of Medicare Claims and Appeals Trained volunteers are available to answer your questions. Appointments are required and can be made by calling the Front Desk or Margie in Social Services. Smart beneficiaries use SHIP because “The Best Choice is an Educated Choice!”
Local Transportation Options Our area is fortunate to have several ride programs available to folks 65+. Each fills a need and operates differently. The two most widely used are the Village of Deerfield Taxi Program (Village Hall 847-9455000) and the West Deerfield Township “Going Places” Senior Van (WDT Office 847-945-0614). For more info about these programs talk to Margie at PTC or call the programs directly. 15
