Do your care obligations keep you from attending ACES? We have solutions! Through our treasured partnership with Faith in Action Volunteers, we now offer TWO respite services! Our NEW on-site Friendship Group will provide supervision at the Patty Turner Center while you attend our ACES meeting. Care recipients for this program must be comfortable being apart from their loved one, and be able to use the restroom on their own. Also, a trained Faith In Action respite volunteer can also come to your home, if needed, while you attend the meeting. Both respite services are FREE, based on availability and pre-screening is required. Please call Margie for details.

Social Services Patty Turner Center staff member Margie Fischer, M.A., offers members of our community a variety of helpful services for older adults and their families. Call or visit her in the Social Service Resource Center. Service is free and confidential. Margie is generally in the office on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Please call: (847) 940-4010.

ACES Adult Caregiver Education & Support Many people do not realize they are caregivers. Who is a family caregiver? Anyone assisting an older adult who can no longer manage all tasks on his or her own. If you are taking an older person to medical appointments or shopping… if you help with things like meal preparation or bill paying… even if that person is in a long-term care facility… then you are providing important caregiving services. Studies show that caregivers reduce stress, enjoy improved health, and provide better care when receiving support. Informed caregivers make better decisions. ACES is a group of spouses and adult children of older adults who gather for valuable information on relevant topics, leads on resources, and to share concerns and tips with other caregivers. Whether you’re seeking information on available resources and services, are feeling stress or sadness from caring for a loved one … ACES can help. Meetings are on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month from 1PM -2:15 in the PTC library. Questions? Call Margie 847-940-4010 FREE.

Benefit Access Application Illinois Form IL-1363, popularly known as the Circuit Breaker Program, is no more. Two of its valuable benefits, Illinois Cares Rx and the Circuit Breaker Property Tax Relief Grant, were eliminated due to lack of funding. What remains is the Seniors Free Transit Ride and the Secretary of State License Plate discount. The new name for these bundled benefits is the Benefit Access Application. To be eligible, one must be 65 or older -- or 16 years of age or older and totally disabled; AND have an annual income under $27,610 for singles or $36,635 for couples. The benefit is now good for two years once you've been approved. Paper applications are not available. ALL APPLICATIONS MUST BE SUBMITTED ONLINE. You can do it yourself by going to www.state.il.us/aging then click on Benefit Access Application tab on the right side of the screen. Or, you can contact Margie at the PTC for cheerful assistance. No rush... the deadline to apply is December 31, 2013.

Chicken Soup for the Caregiver’s Soul

Social Services Medicare Open Enrollment! Coming Soon!

On October 9th, ACES members are invited to “Chicken Soup for the Caregiver’s Soul.” In an early celebration of National Family Caregivers Month, ACES will gather for conversation over bowls of steaming chicken soup and other treats! This fun annual event includes those ACES members we consider “alumni”—their care recipient has passed away. Those caregivers inspired us and we always look forward to seeing them again! The luncheon, at 1pm, is free and open exclusively to current and former ACES members. RSVPs and questions to Margie. Please call: (847) 940-4010

October 15th - December 7th Even if you are happy with your current Medicare drug plan (Part D), it may not be your best deal! A study of 25,000 Medicare subscribers found that fewer than 7% had the Part D plan that met their needs with the lowest out-of-pocket cost. The good news is that it is easy to shop for the best plan by using the online Medicare Drug Plan Finder. You can do this on your own at: (www.medicare.gov/find-aplan/questions/home.aspx) without providing identifying information, just by typing in your zip code. Though the Plan Finder is an amazing tool that provides a wealth of information, it can still be daunting to navigate on your own. Trained SHIP (Senior Health Insurance Program) Counselors at the Patty Turner Center will do it for you for free! At PTC, the demand for Part D appointments has doubled over the past two years as consumers have become more savvy and learned that it’s smart to shop plans annually. Consultations are by appointment only. Please bring the name of your current insurance provider and the list of ALL your drugs, including dosages and frequency taken. The average amount of time a beneficiary spends with the SHIP counselor is 45 minutes. The time is well spent because it ensures you have enrolled in the plan that best meets your needs and offers the best price. Appointments begin October 15. (Those with an employer plan do NOT participate in the Part D Open Enrollment.)

Volunteers Needed Did you know that volunteers are oftentimes needed for a variety of different projects, programs and events. In addition to supporting the efforts of the center, come and enjoy the company of other members. Here are some of the areas in which we could use your help!     
