FOREWORD
Sustainability is an on-going process Contributing to a sustainable environment is part of our mission. We do this by developing advanced, innovative and energy-saving concepts for our clients. Furthermore, we like to show that our business has taken steps forward. We are pleased to present the achievements Deerns has made to this date in terms of sustainability. This is no reason to be complacent, it’s an incentive to keep on doing better. Sustainability is an on-going process. Our focus is primarily on large measures that make an immediate and substantial contribution to reducing CO2. While this is logical and certainly necessary, it should not cause us to forget the little things like turning off the light when the office is empty, arranging to travel together to a meeting, travelling more economically and considering whether it is really necessary to travel at all. These are just a small number of contributions towards a sustainable environment. The most important thing is to change behavior, specifically individual behavior. While each small Âinitiative will not resolve the problem in itself, every little bit helps and together this will result in significant savings. This is our biggest challenge! ABOUT DEERNS
Profile Deerns is the largest independent consultancy firm in the Netherlands working in the field of installation engineering, energy and building physics. With local offices in the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, France, the United Kingdom, Dubai and the United States, Deerns is a leading international player. The headquarters of Deerns is located in Rijswijk in the province of South Holland, the Netherlands. Deerns develops and designs technical facilities in the built-up environment. We excel in combining sustainable and innovative concepts with reliable and practical implementation to help our clients build comfortable, safe and sustainable working and living environments.
Our measures Our offices When it comes to our offices, the emphasis is on energy-saving measures within our buildings and ensuring that the energy consumed is sustainable as far as possible. In addition, we limit the use of raw materials where possible, in our case primarily paper. The paper that we use is manufactured sustainably.
Our travel kilometers By far the largest part of our CO2 footprint is determined by our travel kilometers. The measures we have taken in this context are focused on limiting the number of travel kilometers and reducing our CO2 emissions per kilometer by stimulating the use of public transport and energy-efficient company cars.
Our work Since 1928, we have developed sustainable solutions for a wide-range of clients. Our energy concepts remain by far our most important leverage in our objective to realize a substantial CO2 reduction. This is why we have set ourselves the task of ensuring that at least 20% of the relevant projects that we handle each year are sustainable to such an extent that they are eligible for an accreditation certificate.
‘Viewing sustainability as a popular trend does not create lasting change. It must be continuously integrated into the business’ Jan Karel Mak, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Deerns

Compared to 2009 we achieved the most important rÂesults in terms of mobility: 88,000 fewer car kilometers and 20,000 fewer aircraft kilometers, while doubling the number of public transport kilometers. By being more aware of how we travel, we have reduced our CO2 emissions by 13%.
Deerns Multiplier
CO2 emissions savings
We achieve the greatest reduction in CO2 emissions with our sustainable energy concepts, which are elaborated in our projects. To reflect this positive impact, we have introduced the Deerns Multiplier. This factor represents the extent to which annually we are able to save CO2 emissions for our clients in our top 10 projects that can be set off against the statutory performance requirements relative to our footprint.
In Deerns’ projects in comparison to the Deerns CO2 footprint for 2010.
In 2010, the savings in CO2 emissions over the entire technical lifespan was 577 times our annual output. The savings of 600,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions realized by our projects corresponds to the annual emissions of 200,000 Dutch automobiles.
Deerns CO2 emissions in 2010 Deerns Multiplier In total, the sustainable solutions in 2010 resulted in a reduction in CO2 emissions of 600,000 tonnes, nearly 600 times the annual emissions of Deerns.

COLLABORATION
Collaboration in the field of sustainability De Groene Zaak De Groene Zaak (The Green Business Association) aims to accelerate the implementation of sustainability into the Dutch economy and business climate. It is the only cross-sector representative body for sustainable entrepreneurs in the Netherlands. Deerns is a founding partner of De Groene Zaak.
Dutch Green Building Council
F O U N D I N G PA R T N E R
Building Brains The challenge set by the project Building Brains is how to make the built-up environment energy-neutral. Companies across the entire construction supply chain work together towards achieving the governmental objective of halving the total energy consumption in 2030 compared to 1990. Deerns is an active participant in this program.
Duurzaamgebouwd.nl Everyone in the Netherlands is in favor of sustainable building, but how do you distinguish the sense from the nonsense? In order to help all parties make a start, OVG Projectontwikkeling has taken the initiative and, together with a group of Dutch experts, has set up a digital knowledge platform on this subject, www.duurzaamgebouwd.nl. Deerns is a partner in this digital platform.
Samen Elektrisch The platform Samen Elektrisch was founded by and for organizations that buy and use electrical vehicles. Together these organizations have increased negotiation and lobbying power and they want to use this to accelerate and improve the introduction of electrical mobility. The organizations share their knowledge and gain competitive prices and fast delivery. Deerns has ordered its first electric vehicles.
