A Fort Bend ISD teen is being honored for trying to “keep the peace” among her peers while subsequently being disciplined by her school. Travis Scott has stepped up for his hometown of Houston in a major way.

The “Sicko Mode” rapper recently donated $100,000 to an after-school nonprofit called Workshop Houston in Third Ward. The organization was one of the groups that helped Scott produce a local festival last year called “Astroworld,” named after his current album.

After working with Workshop Houston, Scott learned of their overall mission and liked what he saw, leading him to make the huge donation.

The organization is described as a “wellestablished youth development agency,” which offers classes in dance, music production, fashion and graphic design.

The organization stresses entrepreneurship, as well as independence and some of the children in the program have reportedly started their own businesses already.

Jaime Herrero, who works with Workshop Houston, spoke of Scott’s sizable gift and said it came at a real time of need.

“It really couldn’t have come at a better time for us and so, it wasn’t quite a Christmas miracle, but it was a really great gift,” said Herrero.

The organization is now in its 15th year and just moved into a new $1.9 million facility. Scott has remained quiet about the donation.

Congressman Elijah Cummings said President Trump is reaping financial benefits.

Trump accused of making money in White House Defender News Services

U.S. Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.), the chairman of the House Oversight Committee, is accusing President Donald Trump of reaping substantial financial benefits from his White House job.

In a recent “60 Minutes” interview, Cummings asserted that Trump was making “a lot of money” from the position, implying he was doing so against the law.

“It’s not okay,” he said. “I still believe that people – the average citizen, the guys on my block, they ought to know if the president is making a deal, whether he’s making it – making it in his self-interest or that of the country.”

Responding to Cummings’ claims, the White House told “60 Minutes” they “are completely baseless,” adding that it “cannot comment further about ongoing litigation.”

The matter in question is whether Trump is seeing an increase in revenue from his business ventures, including golf courses and luxury hotels.

Cummings has made clear his mission to serve as a check on the Trump administration and his staff has sent a total of 51 letters to the White House. The Trump Organization and government officials are in search of documents concerning potential investigations that may be launched by his committee.

Among the issues being examined are cabinet members’ private use of government aircraft and foreign money within the president’s businesses.

Trump has already run into trouble on the latter item, being sued by the attorneys general of Maryland and the District of Columbia who’ve accused him of violating the constitution by taking payments from domestic and foreign governments via his namesake hotel in Washington.

While certain Democrats believe that Cummings should advocate for Trump’s impeachment, he contends the move would be premature and has also taken an interest in spearheading other initiatives including skyrocketing prescription drug prices.

THE CONGRESSIONAL BLACK CAUCUS CALLED on fellow lawmakers to do more than admonish U.S. Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) for his recent racist remarks. Karen Bass (D-Calif.), the chair of the CBC, released a statement calling for House Republicans to remove King from further committee assignments after he defended white supremacy to the New York Times.

“White nationalist, white supremacist, Western civilization – how did that language become offensive?” King said. “Why did I sit in classes teaching me about the merits of our history and our civilization?” Some Republicans also denounced King and House Republican leaders later removed him from two committees.……..

THE NUMBER OF AIRPORT SECURITY SCREENERS FAILING to show up for work around the country is soaring as the partial government shutdown goes into its fourth week.

The Transportation Security Administration reported a national absence rate of 7.6 percent compared with 3.2 percent on a comparable day a year ago. The agency is working with airports and airlines nationwide to consolidate operations and get the most out of resources……..CHARGES HAVE BEEN DROPPED AGAINST TWO PEOPLE at the center of the Memphis mall “hoodie arrest,” thanks to a groundswell of support from Roc Nation. Twenty-two-year-old Montavious Smith was at Wolfchase Galleria Mall in Memphis with friends when they were reportedly stopped and told to remove their hooded sweatshirts and jackets based on a vague and non-existent policy that considers neither “appropriate attire” for the mall. Smith and an African-American journalist who recorded the confrontation with police were both arrested and charged. After widespread backlash, prosecutors dismissed criminal charges against Smith and retired journalist Kevin McKenzie. Jay Z’s Roc Nation division Team ROC – dedicated to fighting against racial injustices – helped Smith and McKenzie fight their cases by hiring high-profile attorneys who took up the cases pro bono.

Assailing President Donald Trump for “a crisis of leadership,” former Obama Cabinet member Julian Castro joined the 2020 presidential race as the rush of Democrats making early moves to challenge the incumbent accelerates.

Castro, who could end up being the only Latino in what is shaping up to be a crowded Democratic field, made immigration a centerpiece of his announcement in his hometown of San Antonio, less than 200 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border.

Two days after the president visited the border to promote his promised wall, Castro mocked Trump for claiming that the U.S. faces an “invasion” from its ally to the south. “He called it a national security crisis,” Castro said. “Well, there is a crisis today.

Castro, the 44-year-old grandson of a Mexican immigrant, said he was running for president “because it’s time for new leadership, because it’s time for new energy and it’s time for a new commitment to make sure that the opportunities that I’ve had are available to every American.”

He made the announcement during the longest government shutdown in U.S. history, and as the field of 2020 contenders widens and anticipation grows around bigger names still considering runs.

At its beginnings it broke racial boundaries to present the living legends of New Orleans music, living links to the origins of jazz. Today, the mission remains the same – to pass on the traditions while continually revitalizing it with new blood and fresh ideas.

“I see it as something that’s necessary for the evolution and survival of New Orleans music,” Jaffe said. “Interpreting the repertoire that’s been around for a hundred years is one thing, but the challenge is to keep that repertoire and those traditions alive while at the same time being honest about who you are as a musician, allowing all of your musical influences to be reflected in what you create.”

While that’s always been a key component of the band, whether at its French Quarter home or on stages around the world, it took on a renewed urgency in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

“When something that catastrophic happens in your life, it becomes important to understand and focus on the things that are most important,” Jaffe said.

Director Barry Jenkins has given audiences another acclaimed movie with “If Beale Street Could Talk,” which is currently in theaters. Set in early-1970s Harlem, it is based on the novel by the late James Baldwin (1924-1987) and is a story of love in the face of injustice.

KiKi Lane portrays Tish Rivers and Stephan James portrays Alonzo “Fonny” Hunt. The two young sweethearts are ripped apart when Fonny is wrongly arrested for the rape of a Puerto Rican woman due to the maneu-

vering of a racist police officer.

While seeking justice for Fonny, a pregnant Tish relies on her Harlem community, including her mother (Regina King), her sister (Teyonah Parris) and future mother-in-law (Aunjanue Ellis). King won a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting actress for her role.

Jenkins made Oscar history as an African-American filmmaker for “Moonlight,” the haunting story of a Black boy coming to terms with his sexuality and identity in a neighborhood ravaged by poverty and drugs.

“When I opened it, it was like this slow epiphany – this dawning where I understood what I was holding,” Jenkins said. “And it was electric. It wasn’t this thing where they were sending me this thing to go: ‘Just so you know, this is how Jimmy wanted it done.’ If anything, it was a confirmation that we were moving in the same spirit.”

The absence of National Park Service rangers in Atlanta brought tears to the eyes of Rev. Bernice King, the youngest child of the slain civil rights leader and CEO of the King Center.

“I feel a little bit of sadness because our main partner in this area, in this district, is the National Park Service…and they are not here with us today,” King said. “I didn’t expect to cry over this.”

The National Museum of African American History and Culture and the other 18 museums and galleries managed by the Smithsonian Institution, including the National Zoo, were also closed. The facilities initially remained open using unused funds from last year, but they closed on Jan. 2.

Defender: For Dr. King, fighting for civil rights and later economic equality were big drivers of his ministry. Are there one or two political, social or cultural issues that drive your ministry?

Beatty: The drivers for The Kingdom Culture Center are Black economic/entrepreneurial support and construction. The Civil Rights Movement was a group of Black people who knew the power of pooling their efforts and money and even withholding their money to create change…Think of the power we could possess to create change in our communities and cities if our dollars stayed in them longer than six hours. Think of the power we could see surge in our people if we encouraged them to open businesses that they knew would be supported and financially undergirded by our own. How much do you need to ask for from a government when you can supply financial freedom and certainty for your own?

Johnson: Socially, it would be community violence and Rev. Ishmael Barn community restoration, with an emphasis on human, civil, and community rights. Politically, it would be voter suppression, with an emphasis on voter awareness and registration.

Cumby: First, young men who are raised without a father in the home or a positiv influence. Young men need consistency and direction. Last year I helped produce an ev Manhood Camp in an effort to encourage young men from single parent homes. That e helped link over 150 boys to positive influences and gave them insight on changing a t management, physical fitness, why they should abstain from sex, and more. Second, lit continued education. There is power in knowledge. The marriage of literacy and contin yields a lifetime of successes. The Fountain of Praise has a fantastic summer reading p kids and a unique college program that connects recent high school graduates with curr school students for a realistic snapshot of college through college tours, seminars, and c classes.

Barnett: What drives my ministry is preaching the word of God correctly. There things taken out of context and it affects us in a major way. I’m also driven by the chur I have experienced. So many people have left the church because of the church. I want change some of the negative connotations of church, especially the Black church.

Defender: How do you respond to the criticisms some millennials voice about and the Christian church in particular (i.e. it is anti-intellectual; often treats wome second-class citizens; ignores or downplays culture and social issues)?

Another friend was upset because of what he perceived to be the unwillingness of some Black churches and pastors to speak out regarding the shooting of unarmed Black men…All of these are important issues. I believe God has earmarked this generation to be change agents in their communities, churches, workplaces, and families…The church has to begin to listen to what the younger generation says it needs spiritually, relationally, emotionally, socially, politically and economically.

Beatty: I am empathetic and I often apologize. I do this because they have valid points. Ultimately, I try to show them a difference and ask them to consider giving the church another try.

Cervical cancer screening saves lives

C

ervical cancer kills thousands of women each year, and black women are especially vulnerable.

Sadly, more than 50 percent of new cervical cancers are in women who have never been screened or have not been screened in the previous five years of their lives, according to a 2014 Chanelle Clark, M.D., F.A.C.O.G. report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). However, with recommended screening, cervical cancer is preventable and, when discovered early, is one of the most curable cancers.

With the start of a new year, now is the perfect time to make cervical cancer screening a 2019 health goal.

Slow growing cancer

Cervical cancer forms in the tissues of the cervix where the uterus and vagina connect. It’s usually a slow-growing cancer that may not have symptoms

but can be found with regular Pap tests, a procedure in which cells are scraped from the cervix and examined under a microscope for signs of cell changes that might lead to cervical cancer, and human papillomavirus (HPV) screening in certain age groups, which looks for the virus that can cause these cell changes.

It isn’t clear what causes cervical cancer, but various strains of HPV, a sexually transmitted infection, play a role. HPV vaccination helps prevent infection with HPV types that cause most cervical cancers. It’s recommended for preteen boys and girls ages 11 to 12 years but can be given as early as age 9 and until age 26.

In addition to HPV, the following may also increase a woman’s risk of cervical cancer: • Smoking • Having HIV (the virus that causes AIDS) or another condition that makes it hard to fight off health problems • Using birth control pills for five or more years • Having given birth to three or more children If your doctor determines that you have cervical cancer, you’ll have further tests to determine the extent of your cancer before deciding on your treatment,

which may include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, or a combination of the three.

Schedule your well-woman exam

Even if you feel well, you should see your gynecologist regularly for a well-woman checkup. Your doctor can help determine an appropriate screening and prevention program based on your family’s history of cancer and other factors.

The Pap test is one of the most reliable and effective cancer screening tests available to women.

Unless otherwise directed by your doctor, regular Pap tests should begin at age 21. Women ages 30 to 65 should have an HPV test and Pap test. If you know a woman who doesn’t have health insurance, let her know she may be able to get free or low-cost cervical cancer screening through CDC’s National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (call 800-CDC-INFO or visit cdc.gov/cancer/nbccedp) or through the Texas Health and Human Services’ Breast and Cervical Cancer Services Program (call 512-7767796 for information).

Legislative update

Bill would protect homebuyers in flood areas Texas Tribune

State Sen. Joan Huffman, R-Houston, recently filed legislation that would require sellers of residential properties to notify buyers if a property is located in a flood-prone area – and whether it has previously flooded.

Senate Bill 339 would change a provision of the state’s property code to force sellers to tell buyers whether properties are in a 100- or 500-year floodplain or partly inside a reservoir or reservoir “flood pool” — an area next to a reservoir that is usually dry but is designed to hold floodwater.

The bill also would require sellers to disclose whether the property has flooded before, whether it might flood under “catastrophic circumstances,” and if it’s located within 5 miles downstream of a reservoir.

If a seller doesn’t disclose the information, the law would allow buyers to terminate the contract – or sue.

Currently, sellers only have to disclose whether a home is in a 100-year floodplain.

The lack of flood risk disclosure became a major issue in Houston in the wake of Hurricane Harvey, when homeowners who live upstream from two federally-owned reservoirs learned their properties were actually designed to flood even though they aren’t located in any designated floodplain.

Scores of those homeowners are now suing the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the City of Houston and Harris County in federal court. Many more homeowners who

live downstream of the reservoirs, known as Addicks and Barker, also are suing because their properties flooded after the Army Corps released a historic amount of water from the reservoir dams following Harvey’s torrential rains.

“One issue in particular that I have heard about from so many constituents who were affected by Harvey is that they were completely unaware they were at risk of flood-

ing,” Huffman said in a statement.

“This is just a small piece of the complicated puzzle that is Harvey recovery and resiliency. I believe that if passed, S.B. 339 will have a tremendous lasting impact as prospective homeowners for years to come will be provided with the critical flood risk information they need for what is often their largest investment.”

NFL launches social justice initiative Associated Press

“We really took the time to meet with and talk to advocates and community leaders and to decide the most important aspects to focus on.”

The NFL is launching a social justice platform, with an emphasis on education, economic development and community and police relations.

The platform is called Inspire Change and includes the funding of grassroots organizations such as Big Brothers Big Sisters of America and Operation HOPE. It also will establish a digital learning curriculum for African-American history in 175 underserved high schools. The initiative will work in connection with the league’s 32 teams and the Players Coalition, a group of

players that works for social justice.

Inspire Change is the latest step for the league and the players after they established a working relationship in October 2017 following player demonstrations for social justice during the national anthem.

“This launch involves new grants, new AfricanAmerican history education programs in schools, grants with organizations we have not worked with before and who are doing the work on the ground, and PSAs on broadcasts beginning with this weekend’s playoff games,” says Anna Isaacson, the NFL’s senior vice president

of social responsibility.

“You have to really take the time to understand the topic, you can’t just dive in. We really took the time to meet with and talk to advocates and community leaders and to decide the most important aspects to focus on under the broad social justice umbrella.”

The league’s financial commitment in 2018 was $8.5 million, plus an additional $2 million for NFL Foundation grants

for clubs, former players and active players. For the 2019 fiscal year,

that will increase to $12 million overall.

Davis returns as the Cougars’ leading scorer after averaging 13.1 points per game and earning the American All-Tournament Team honors a year ago. The Lafayette, La., native became the fifth player in school history to sink 100-plus three-pointers in a single season and buried at least one trey in 29 straight games, the second longest streak in school history.

Brooks also noted the impact playing in the

Maybe it was a heartbreaking, last-second loss to Michigan in the NCAA tournament, the same Wolverine team that wound up advancing to the Finals last spring. Perhaps it was being selected as a Jordan brand team by Nike. Whatever the reason, the University of Houston basketball program has returned to national prominence.

The Cougars are off to a 16-1 record, 3-1 in American Athletic Conference action. UH is currently ranked No. 15 in the latest USA Today Coaches poll and No. 17 in the most recent Associated Press poll.

The team features seniors at its core – players who have experienced the improvement in the UH program and leaders who exemplify what head coach Kelvin Sampson wants to see on the floor.

“They are what I want senior leaders to be,” Sampson said. “They couldn’t care less about statistics or any of that stuff that will grab teams by the throat. We don’t have any knuckleheads. We don’t deal with – knock on wood – discipline issues. These kids are on time, they stay late, always in the coaches’ office watching film. I told them, ‘I want you to be addicted to getting better.’”

The Cougars were close in 2018, losing to a Michigan team that lost in the Finals to Villanova for the championship. Longtime UH assistant coach and Houston native (Wheatley High School) Alvin Brooks said this year’s success has not been a surprise to him.

“I thought we would have a chance to have a better team,” Brooks said. “Kelvin Sampson has done a great job of assembling a roster and building it so that you stay mature and get better every year. That’s been his staple over the course of his career, especially with the players we had coming back.”

This season’s Cougar squad is an ideal mix of experience and youth that has perfectly blended together.

“Galen Robinson, Corey Davis and Breaon Brady are our three starters,” Brooks said.

Lewis Development Center, which we’ve been in for two years, which is attached to the Fertitta Center. “[Sampson] did a great job adding some touches to the facility and the arena that NBA facilities have. The message boards, the light shows before the game, the improved locker rooms are all major league.

“Now it’s second to none and you can recruit just about anybody,” Brooks continued. “Kids can come visit and they are thoroughly impressed when they witness the first-class facilities of the program. You haven’t always been able to say that. The university and the administration made a great commitment to Kelvin Sampson when he came in and he’s done a great job getting what he needed to move the program forward.”
