TSU employee fired over admissions process Defender News Services

Texas Southern University is providing few details after an internal audit found “improprieties” related to the admission process within the university.

The university’s Board of Regents said all findings were presented to local authorities and the person involved is no longer employed. A full and comprehensive review of the university’s admissions has been launched.

“As part of the Board’s oversight responsibility, it has launched a full and comprehensive review of the University’s admissions,” said a statement. “This includes enrollment, financial aid, scholarship protocols and standards for all University colleges.

This process is being conducted using independent auditors, attorneys and outside experts.”

The statement also said TSU’s academic integrity, trust of students, faculty, alumni and the public at large are of utmost importance, and that TSU “will have no further comment until the investigative process is complete.”

TSU is fully cooperating with investigators.

A coalition of philanthropic organizations has invested $3 million into three historically Black colleges to spur salary increases, research and course creation support for faculty members.

Prairie View A&M University, along with Morehouse and Spelman Colleges, each received a total of $1 million from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and the Rockefeller Foundation, the Chronicle of Higher Education reports.

The aim of the joint gift, according to the presidents, was to begin conversation around the importance of HBCUs hiring and retaining highcaliber faculty nationwide.

“Other philanthropic groups should take

a lesson from this series of grants,” PVAMU President Ruth J. Simmons said. “They give enormous sums to other institutions, often for minority issues, but not to HBCUs. I think that has to be called out…It is very frustrating to see that behavior."

Faculty members at HBCUs earn, on average, about $26,000 less per year than do those at predominantly white institutions. Simmons, who has already led major faculty-development efforts, said the funds would further that mission.

“Prairie View, for example, educates the third-largest number of African American engineers in the country,” Simmons said, but “there is really no comparison” between her faculty’s heavy teaching workload and that of professors at other leading engineering-focused institutions.

Actress Detria Ward remembered Defender News Services

Award-winning Houston actress Detria Ward is being remembered by friends and colleagues as a talented professional and gracious soul. She died Sunday, Nov. 17 at age 57.

Her homegoing visitation is Friday, Nov. 22, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Good Hope Missionary Baptist Church, 3015 N. MacGregor Way. Her homegoing ceremony is Saturday, Nov. 23 at 11 a.m. at Good Hope.

In addition to her work with the Ensemble Theatre and other local theater groups, she was a radio talent with KTSU and announcer for half-time performances at Texas Southern University football games. She later served as general manager of Music World Entertainment and was most recently the theater arts coordinator at Energized for STEM Academy High School.

“Detria Ward had a gift for telling stories through the eyes of her characters on stage,” said Eileen J. Morris, Ensemble artistic director. “She was a vibrant and gracious soul who believed in her colleagues bringing their best and was often seen mentoring or directing through a gentle nod.

“The Ensemble Theatre family will miss her tenacity, and absolute passion and love for theatre,” Morris said. “She was our jewel; a brilliant actress and teacher embraced by the community.”

She didn’t hold any punches and had no problem telling you exactly how she felt. She was sassy and a diva in a good way, and always made sure I was on point when doing shows. This hurts…”

Ward, a native Houstonian, attended Yates High School. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts

in theater from TSU and directed several plays in the theater department. She began working with the Ensemble in the mid-1980s with the play “It’s Showdown Time” directed by Ensemble founder George Hawkins. Her final performance was in the recent production “School Girls: Or, The African Mean Girls Play.”

She won the 2013 Houston Press Theatre Award for Best Actress and numerous Giorgee Awards presented by the Ensemble. She appeared in such productions as “Sassy Mamas,” “Fences,” “What I Learned in Paris, “The Old Settler” and “Knock Me a Kiss.”

She was a member of St. Luke the Evangelist Episcopal Church and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

Survivors include her sisters, Latonya McGowan and LaShonda Dickey, and nephew,

In the chat dubbed “Bad A B’s,” educators allegedly accused Ashford High School student Anastasia Williams of being pregnant and said she isn’t the sharpest student and is also quiet, according to WDHN. “I guess she mime sex?” one teacher allegedly wrote. In another part of the chat, teachers called a student the n-word. A student reportedly saw the chat, took a video of it and sent it to several people. The school is investigating…..THE WHITE HOUSE IS RAMPING UP ITS PUSH TO GET A BILL through Congress that curbs prescription drug costs, feeling a new urgency as the impeachment investigation advances amid the 2020 election campaign. The effort has progressed beyond anything seen in years, said President Donald Trump’s top domestic policy adviser. Instead Trump is backing a compromise bipartisan bill in the Senate, which does not give Medicare bargaining authority, but forces drugmakers to pay rebates if they raise prices too high. The administration is reportedly working to line up Republican support for the Senate bill while trying to sweeten its impact by plowing more of the government’s savings from reduced drug prices into benefits for seniors.

Obama cautions Democratic hopefuls about leaning left Immigration and health care are two issues he cited as cases where Democratic candidates are out of sync with public sentiment.

“Even as we push the envelope and we are bold in our vision, we also have to be rooted in reality and the fact that voters, including the Democratic voters and certainly persuadable independents or even moderate Republicans, are not driven by the same views that are reflected on certain, you know, left-leaning Twitter feeds,” Obama said.

Obama delivered his remarks at a gathering of the Democracy Alliance, a group of wealthy Democrats who raise large sums for the party. He was interviewed by Stacey Abrams, a rising star in the party who narrowly lost the Georgia governor’s race last year.

He also sought to ease jittery Democrats who have been wringing their hands over the size of the sprawling field, which some worry will lead to a prolonged contest that will leave the eventual nominee with limited time to prepare for the general election.

“I just have to remind you that I had a very robust primary,” Obama said. “Not only did I win ultimately a remarkably tough and lengthy primary process with Hillary Clinton, but people forget that even before that we had a big field of really serious, accomplished people.”

Former President Barack Obama is warning the Democratic field of White House hopefuls not to veer too far to the left, a move he said would alienate many who would otherwise be open to voting for the party’s nominee next year.

Though Obama did not mention anyone by name, the message delivered before a room of Democratic donors in Washington was a clear word of caution about the candidacies of Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders. The two have called for massive structural changes – and in Sanders’ case “revolution” –that would dramatically alter the role of government in people’s lives.

Lubbock honors memory of Mickey Leland on East 20th Street in Lubbock, and his family eventually moved to Houston. He served in the Texas House of Representatives during the 1970s and succeeded Barbara Jordan in Congress in 1980.

He was active in a number of civil rights and humanitarian causes. He sought to create the

Houston Congressman Mickey Leland died in a plane crash in 1989 while on a humanitarian mission to Ethiopia.

Forty-five years earlier, the future congressman was born in Lubbock, Texas on Nov. 27, 1944.

Leland was recently recognized for his endeavors and for being a native of Lubbock. The ceremony was held at the Mt. Vernon Methodist Church followed by a plaque unveiling at Booker T. Washington Park.

Distinguished guests in attendance included Alison Leland, Congressman Leland’s widow; Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis, former state senator and Leland’s chief of staff; and Texas Tech Chancellor Emeritus Kent Hance, who joined Congress at the same time as Leland.

Students from Lubbock Independent School District and Texas Tech made presentations. Additionally, a special recognition issued by the City of Lubbock was read by Mayor Dan Pope and

Smithsonian's African American Museum in Washington, served as chair of the Congressional Black Caucus and chaired a Select Committee on the homeless. The latter was a new focus for Congress and prompted eventual federal funding for local homeless initiatives.

ew approaches to medicine can take different forms, from non-mainstream medicine combined with conventional medicine to cutting-edge research. Some different approaches to medicine aren’t actually new; meditation and acupuncture have been around hundreds of years. Here are 10 things to know:

One term often used in innovative approaches to health care is integrative health care. It emphasizes a holistic, patient-focused approach to wellness – often including mental, emotional, functional, spiritual, social and community aspects – and treating the whole person rather than, for example, one organ system. It aims for well-coordinated care between different providers and institutions.

The use of integrative approaches to health and wellness has grown within care settings across the country.

Researchers are currently exploring the potential benefits of integrative health in a variety of situations, including pain management for military personnel and veterans, relief of symptoms in cancer patients and survivors and programs to promote healthy behaviors.

Music therapy is an example of integrative medicine and researchers continue to explore the potential of music for treating a wide range of conditions resulting from neurological and other disorders.

A National Institutes of Health (NIH) initiative aims to advance the understanding of music’s mechanism and how it may be applied to treat symptoms of disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, stroke, chronic pain and

many more. The research will also seek to understand the effect of music on the developing brain of children.

Studies have shown that music may reduce agitation and improve behavioral issues that are common in the middle stages of Alzheimer’s disease.

Even in the late stages of Alzheimer's, a person may be able to tap a beat or sing lyrics to a song from childhood.

Music provides a way to connect, even after verbal communication has become difficult.

Art therapy, such as painting, drawing, coloring and sculpting, has been found to help youth and adults relieve stress, improve self-esteem, manage addictions and improve symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Complementary health approaches are used together with mainstream medical care and include natural products and mind and body practices.

One survey found that the most common complementary health approaches among American adults included natural products (herbs, vitamins, minerals, probiotics).

Strong evidence regarding usefulness and safety of natural products doesn’t exist uniformly.

Researchers have done large studies on a few natural products, but the results often showed that the products didn’t work for the conditions studied. Research on others is in progress. While there are indications that some may be helpful, more needs to be learned about the effects of such products in the human body, and potential interactions with medicines.

Other popular complementary approaches included deep breathing, yoga, chiropractic manipulation, meditation, massage, special diets and progressive relaxation.

Homeopathy is a common and controversial approach. Homeopathic products come from plants, minerals or animals (such as crushed whole bees). According to the NIH, it is based on two unconventional theories – the notion that a disease can be cured by a substance that produces similar symptoms in healthy people and the notion that the lower the dose of the medication, the greater its effectiveness. There is little evidence to support homeopathy as an effective treatment for any specific health condition. The NIH recommends talking with your health care provider about any complementary health approaches you are considering to make well-informed decisions.

ntegrative therapies complement conventional therapies that children receive with medical care.

To gain more insight, the Defender conducted a Q&A with Dr. Sanghamitra Misra, director of the Integrative Medicine Program at Texas Children’s Hospital.

Dr. Misra is an associate professor of pediatrics, director of the pediatric clerkship and the director of a medical student elective on the ethics and effectiveness of integrative medicine at Baylor College of Medicine.

Defender: How would you explain pediatric integrative medicine in layman's terms?

Misra: It is the integration of complementary and alternative medicines and therapies (CAM) into the Dr. Sanghamitra Misra practice of medicine by pediatricians. Common CAM modalities used in pediatrics are acupuncture, biofeedback, clinical hypnosis, mindfulness and music therapy.

Defender: Why is there a need for pediatric integrative medicine?

Misra: Pediatricians aim to treat the whole child and use all available therapies to help a child heal and thrive. Many

families are looking for that holistic care of their child. The National Health Interview Study shows that about 12% of children in the U.S. are utilizing CAM regularly, and individual studies by disease or population show CAM use rates as high as 80%. Families are already using CAM therapies.

Care is best when all therapies are coordinated by an educated physician.

Defender: What illnesses or diseases respond best to integrative medicine?

Misra: Integrative medicine has its place in medicine. In general, in cases of acute trauma, infection, cancer, and serious illness, it is strongly recommended to allow a pediatrician to treat the child. However, almost any child with a serious

illness can also be treated with complementary therapies like music therapy or acupuncture to help alleviate symptoms such as pain and nausea.

But, the decision to use complementary therapies would have to be discussed with the pediatrician coordinating care. In cases of children with chronic diseases, like juvenile arthritis, autism, inflammatory bowel disease, and anxiety, integrative therapies can be beneficial to improve quality of life, but that care should also be coordinated by a treating pediatrician.

Defender: How do you determine if a young patient is a candidate for integrative medicine?

Misra: Any patient may be a candidate for integrative medicine, but a pediatrician must assess the child’s condition, symptoms and then weigh the risks and benefits of specific CAM therapies to create an individualized care plan.

Defender: How is Texas Children's addressing pediatric integrative medicine?

Misra: Texas Children’s Hospital has provided complementary therapies such as acupuncture, clinical hypnosis, music therapy and pet therapy to children in the hospital for more than 10 years. In 2018, the hospital’s leadership developed an Integrative Medicine Program to improve education and research opportunities at the hospital.

cupuncture is a technique in which practitioners stimulate specific points on the body, most often by inserting thin needles through the skin.

It is one of the practices used in traditional Chinese medicine and proponents say it can do everything from relieving pain to bringing a general sense of wellness. Others think the only benefits you get from acupuncture are in your head. Here are frequently asked questions and the answers.

Q: How does acupuncture work?

A: According to traditional Chinese medicine, the body contains a delicate balance of two opposing and inseparable forces: yin and yang. Yin represents the cold, slow or passive principle. Yang represents the hot, excited or active principle.

Health is achieved through balancing the two. Disease comes from an imbalance that leads to a blockage in the flow of qi, the vital energy or life force thought to regulate your spiritual, emotional, mental and physical health. Acupuncture is intended to remove blockages in the flow of qi and restore and maintain health.

Q: How effective is it?

A: Results from a number of studies suggest that acupuncture may help ease types of pain that are often chronic such as low-back pain, neck pain and osteoarthritis/knee pain. It also may help reduce the frequency of tension headaches and prevent migraine headaches. However, clinical practice guidelines are inconsistent in recommendations about acupuncture.

The effects of acupuncture on the brain and body and how best to measure them are only beginning to be understood. Current evidence suggests that many factors – such as expectation and belief – that are unrelated to acupuncture needling may play

Over the past five years, more Americans of all ages have been rolling out their yoga mats and meditating.

A large national survey found that the number of American adults and children using yoga and meditation has significantly increased over previous years and that use of chiropractic care has increased modestly for adults and held steady for children.

The health questionnaire was developed by the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, part of the National Institutes of Health, and by the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistic.

The questionnaire is administered every five years as part of the National Health Interview Survey, an annual study in which thousands of Americans are

interviewed about their health- and illness-related experiences.

Survey highlights for adults showed that: • Yoga was the most commonly used complementary health approach among U.S. adults in 2017 (14.3 percent). The use of meditation increased more than threefold from 4.1 percent in 2012 to 14.2 percent in 2017.

• The racial breakdown showed that 9.3% of Blacks were more likely to use yoga and 5.5% were more likely to see a chiropractor in the past 12 months, as opposed to 17.1% and 12.7% (respectively) of whites and 8% and 6.6% of Hispanics (respectively).

• Meditation increased significantly from 0.6 percent in 2012 to 5.4 percent in 2017.

Q: How safe is it?

A: Acupuncture is generally considered safe when performed by an experienced, well-trained practitioner using sterile needles. Improperly performed acupuncture can cause serious side effects. Relatively few complications from using acupuncture have been reported. Still, complications have resulted from use of nonsterile needles and improper delivery of treatments. When not delivered properly, acupuncture can cause serious adverse effects, including infections, punctured organs, collapsed lungs, and injury to the central nervous system.

Q: What else should I know about acupuncture?

A: Don’t use acupuncture to postpone seeing a health care provider about a health problem.

If you decide to visit an acupuncturist, check his or her credentials. Most states require a license, certification or registration to practice acupuncture, however, education and training standards and requirements for obtaining these vary from state to state. Some conventional medical practitioners, including physicians and dentists, practice acupuncture.

Numerous studies have been conducted to look at how meditation may be helpful for a variety of conditions, such as high blood pressure, certain psychological disorders and pain.

Some research suggests that practicing meditation may reduce blood pressure, symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, anxiety and depression and insomnia. Evidence about its effectiveness for pain and as a smoking-cessation treatment is uncertain.

There are many types of meditation, but most have four elements in common: • A quiet location with as few distractions as possible.

• A specific, comfortable posture (sitting, lying down, walking, or in other positions).

• A focus of attention (a specially chosen word or set of words, an object, or the sensations of the breath.

• An open attitude (letting distractions come and go naturally without judging them).

Meditation is generally considered to be safe for healthy people. However, people with physical limitations may not be able to participate in certain meditative practices involving movement.

roton therapy, also referred to as proton beam therapy, is an advanced type of radiation treatment that uses protons rather than x-ray radiation to treat certain types of cancerous tumors.

Its primary advantage: proton therapy allows physicians to zero in on tumors with pin-point accuracy while steering clear of surrounding normal tissues and nearby organs.

Because of its biology, precision and ability to deliver the highest possible doses of radiation, patients may experience fewer side effects which reduce the potential occurrence of secondary tumors (cancers that can result from x-ray radiation). This can improve patients’ quality of life during and after treatment.

Experts at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center share how advancements in proton therapy play a part in defining precision medicine today and into the future.

How proton therapy is performed

The most precise form of proton therapy is pencil beam scanning. It uses an electronically guided scanning system and magnets to deliver treatment via a

proton beam.

“Pencil beam scanning, pioneered at MD Anderson, is an intricate, personalized approach to proton therapy,” according to Steven Frank, M.D., executive director of MD Anderson’s Particle Therapy Institute. “No two tumors are identical, so we customize the proton beam to target each patient’s unique tumor location, size and shape.”

With this highly calibrated treatment, pencil beam scanning allows for even greater manipulation of the proton beam so doctors can more accurately administer a dose to the unique size and shape of a tumor, particularly to those that are more complex.

“We can increase the intensity of protons where there’s more volume of cancer and scale it back when there’s less,” added Frank. Because doctors can better control where the proton beams deposit energy, proton beam therapy reduces overall toxicity for patients and offers a much less invasive alternative to other types of cancer treatments.

Clinically proven to make a difference

The use and implementation of proton beam therapy has been clinically proven to: • Precisely target tumors and cancer cells, reducing the risk to surrounding healthy tissues • Treat recurrent tumors even in patients who

have already undergone radiation • Allow for increases of therapeutic treatment doses to the tumor, if needed • More effectively treat rare or complex tumors in both adult and pediatric patients In adults, proton therapy can be beneficial in treating a broad range of cancerous (and some noncancerous) tumors, including those of the brain, head and neck, central nervous system, lung, prostate, and gastrointestinal tract, as well as sarcomas. Because of its precision, proton therapy is also an excellent treatment option for children with certain types of tumors, including many brain tumors.

Proton beam therapy is especially appropriate for cancers with limited treatment options and those where conventional radiation therapy may pose an unacceptable risk to a patient. Although a course of proton therapy can last up to six to eight weeks – besides the time needed to prepare for each treatment – the actual procedure itself takes only minutes each day.

You really can’t spoil a newborn

Am I spoiling my newborn?” It’s a question that a lot of new parents have. Despite advice to the contrary from well-meaning relatives or friends, the truth is, it’s impossible to spoil a newborn. Giving hugs, kisses, closeness, and warmth provides children with the security they need to develop optimally. There is actually Dr. Teandra Gordon no such thing as too much love!

You can’t spoil a baby by holding them when they cry.

In fact, responding to their cries is exactly what your baby needs. Infants cry for many reasons. They may be hungry or wet or cold. They may even need to be burped. But sometimes, newborns just simply want to be held close and comforted.

Crying is their signal to you that they need your attention.

The parenting relationship is a human-to-human connection that begins at birth and endures throughout a lifetime. From

the moment they are born, children are in need of the presence, consistency and communication of a loving caregiver.

The connection between parent and child is significant. The security of the parenting relationship is based on a foundation of unconditional love. Human development researchers have even attributed the formulation of the human personality to the infant-

caregiver connection.

When caregivers provide nurturance, closeness and responsiveness to the needs of their infant, those infants develop a secure attachment to their caregivers. And when infants have a secure foundation, they experience safety, which allows them to explore their world, take risks, and develop in a way that helps them to actualize their potential as human beings.

linical trials offer a step-by-step process of finding new ways to prevent, detect or treat a disease. Treatments can include new drugs, surgical procedures or devices, or new ways to use existing treatments. African Americans, however, are underrepresented in research to find treatments for many of the very diseases that affect them. Here, the Defender looks at the lack of minority participation, gets insight into clinical trials from MD Anderson, provides questions to ask and lists types of trials.

More minorities encouraged to participate The lack of participation by minorities in clinical trials concerns the National Medical Association (NMA), the largest and oldest national organization representing 50,000 African American physicians and the patients.

To address the problem, the NMA established Project IMPACT (Increase Minority Participation and Awareness of Clinical Trials) in 1999. Its purpose is to encourage greater participation of minority physicians, patients and consumers in all aspects of biomedical research and clinical trials.

According to the NMA, many of today’s lifesaving treatments are based on yesterday’s clinical trials, and advances in hypertension, diabetes, cancer and heart failure have been powered by clinical trials.

Yet, Dr. James Powell, the principal investigator with Project IMPACT, cited a Research!

America survey that found that less than 20% of African Americans, Hispanics and Asians in the U.S. said they or a family member have ever participated in clinical trials.

“This lack of inclusion of minority patients can negatively impact the quality of care provided to these patients and ultimately contribute to health disparities,” he said.

Reasons often given for why African Americans do not participate in clinical research include: • Lack of awareness • No access to healthcare • The doctor didn’t recommend it • Fear and/or distrust

• Cultural beliefs or myths • Racial and ethnic discrimination Powell said the lack of participation hinders minorities’ wellbeing.

“Oftentimes, much of the data supporting approval of new drugs in America is based on clinical trials in non-U.S. populations that poorly reflect American diversity,” he said. “The lack of U.S. data is, in large part, due to the ‘difficulty’ in recruiting American patients to clinical trials, and represents a barrier to precision medicine.”

The NMA has also found that Africa American physicians are underrepresente medical research. Reasons given include: • Lack of opportunity, awareness, tim and support personnel • Too much paperwork • Reimbursement considerations • No academic affiliation or institutio review board • Concern for patient safety While the NMA encourages increase participation, it noted that no clinical trial guaranteed completely safe.

he holidays are right around the corner. This time of year signals a time for family, festivities and feasting. The temptation to eat just one more slice of pie is very real, but this can be especially problematic when we take into account current levels of pediatric obesity.

On the other hand, the season also offers families the opportunity to all get involved in the communal goal of maintaining a healthy weight.

Weight gain during the holidays may be slight, but it can be tough to lose and compounds over a lifetime. Here are steps families can take together to stay fit: • Limit screen time School breaks are healthy for children, but they also can lead kids to become “screen zombies.”

Limit screen time to two hours or less and schedule daily movement.

• Get out, move your body and connect Make time for health and fitness by carving out moments for physical activity to break up the monotony of the day. Routine exercise builds cardiovascular health,

strengthens bones, blasts stress, promotes quality sleep, stabilizes mood and increases flexibility. It can also help minimize mindless snacking, which can occur when kids are bored and raid the snack cabinet.

Involve them in holiday meal planning, food shopping and in picking activities.

Offer healthy snacking options even on celebratory days. They can’t make the nutritious choice if it is not available.

Enjoy each other’s company and keep family meals screen time free. Eating in front of a screen can lead to overeating, missing cues of satiation and chances for family connection.

Lastly, delight in the celebrations and keep in mind that each small choice you make will help create a habit.

Make this: Chicken and barley soup You might think of barley as an addition to hearty, wintery soups, such as mushroom-barley or beef barley soup, but it also works well in lighter soups like this one with chicken, asparagus and peas.

Instructions: Heat oil in a large saucepan over medium heat; add onion and celery; cook, stirring, until beginning to soften, 2 to 4 minutes. Grate or finely chop 1 clove garlic; add to pan and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 1 minute.

Add broth, chicken and barley. Bring to a gentle simmer.

Cover and cook over low heat until the chicken is cooked through, about 20 minutes. Transfer the chicken to a plate with a slotted spoon. Return broth to a simmer and cook until barley is tender, 20 to 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, shred the chicken or cut into bite-size pieces; discard the bone.

When the barley is done, add chicken, tomatoes and juice, asparagus, peas, salt and a grinding of pepper; return to a simmer. Cover and cook over low heat until asparagus is tender, about 5 minutes more.

Coarsely chop the remaining garlic clove. Gather basil, orange zest and garlic and finely chop together.

Ladle the soup into bowls and sprinkle each serving with a generous pinch of the basil mixture.

Ingredients: 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil ½ cup finely chopped onion ½ cup finely chopped celery 2 cloves garlic, divided 6 cups reduced-sodium chicken broth 1 large bone-in chicken breast, 10-12 ounces, leave skin removed, trimmed 1 cup trimmed and diagonally sliced asparagus, (¼ inch thick) ½ cup pearl barley 1 15-ounce can diced tomatoes 1 cup fresh or thawed frozen peas ½ teaspoon coarse salt Freshly ground pepper, to taste ½ cup lightly packed torn fresh basil 1 strip orange zest, (½ by 2 inches)

ccording to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 4.9 million African-Americans ages 20 or older – almost 19 percent – have Type 2 diabetes, but many don’t even know it.

Diabetes Isn’t a Given

Given these statistics, you might be thinking that you’re destined to have Type 2 diabetes and there’s nothing you can do about it. That’s not true. By making a few changes to daily habits, you can prevent Type 2 diabetes or slow its progression if a doctor has already told you that you have it.

Lifestyle Is Key

It’s a myth that taking care of diabetes only means taking your medicine. Although medication is

important, managing diabetes is about lifestyle. In fact, 95 percent of diabetes management is self-care. This means that, day to day, your care is up to you – with the guidance and support of your medical team.

Go for a brisk walk, do a mini workout at home, attend fun exercise classes, or walk the family pet – any activity that will get you up and active will help.

• Make smart food choices. Managing your blood sugar is closely linked to diet. Plan meals carefully and be mindful of how much you’re eating. Stick with lean proteins, low-carb vegetables, and whole grains. Avoid processed foods that are high in hidden sugars and salt.

• Keep stress under control. Stress hormones can directly alter your blood glucose levels. Exercise,

inding an accessible, easy way to monitor blood pressure is important given that nearly half of American adults have hypertension and many don’t even know

they have it.

Blood pressure monitoring might one day become as easy as taking a video selfie, according to new research in Circulation: Cardiovascular Imaging, an American Heart Association journal.

Transdermal (the application of a medicine or drug through the skin) optical imaging measures blood pressure by detecting blood flow changes in smartphone-captured facial videos. Ambient light penetrates the skin’s outer layer allowing digital optical sensors in smartphones to visualize and extract blood flow patterns, which transdermal optical imaging models can use to predict blood pressure.

“High blood pressure is a major contributor to cardiovascular disease – a leading cause of death and disability. To manage and prevent it, regular monitoring of one’s blood pressure is essential, said study lead

author Kang Lee, Ph.D., professor and research chair in developmental neuroscience at the University of Toronto in Canada.

“Cuff-based blood pressure measuring devices, while highly accurate, are inconvenient and uncomfortable. Users tend not to follow American Heart Association guidelines and device manufacturers’ suggestion to take multiple measurements each time.”

Lee and his colleagues measured the blood flow of

1,328 Canadian and Chinese adults by capturing two-minute videos using an iPhone equipped with transdermal optical imaging software.

The researchers compared systolic, diastolic and pulse pressure measurements captured from smartphone videos to blood pressure readings using a traditional cuff-based continuous blood pressure measurement device.

They found that on average, transdermal optical imaging predicted systolic blood pressure with nearly 95% accuracy and diastolic blood pressure with pulse pressure at nearly 96% accuracy.

Researchers videoed faces in a well-controlled environment with fixed lighting, so it’s unclear whether the technology can accurately measure blood pressure in less controlled environments, including homes.

People in the study all had normal blood pressure. “If future studies confirm our results and show this method can be used to measure blood pressures that are clinically high or low, we will have the option of a contactless and non-invasive method to monitor blood pressures conveniently – perhaps anytime and anywhere – for health management purposes,” Lee said.

Role of technology in dementia care expands Defender News Services

New studies reported earlier this year at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference in Los Angeles demonstrated the utility of technology to address Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias from three different angles – direct care of people living with the disease, assistance for caregivers and prevention education for young people.

Research found that: • Remote telephone consultation with a health care provider can be effective in reducing emergency department visits among people with dementia in senior living communities.

• Seventy percent of callers to the Alzheimer’s Association 24/7 Helpline put action steps into place within one week of using the service and nearly 30% reported lower levels of emotional distress.

• A multimedia resource and video series called “MyBrainRobbie” was effective in teaching schoolchildren brain-healthy behaviors as a potential early intervention to prevent cognitive decline and dementia.

“Providing high quality, person-centered care for people with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias is an important but costly proposition,” said Joanne Pike, DrPH, Alzheimer’s Association chief program officer. “The cost of providing care for people with dementia in the United States in 2019 was

estimated at $290 billion…

“While methods may exist to manage costs through public policy, expanded training, and health systems optimization, interactive technologies offer opportunities in the short-term to reduce the burden of hospitalizations and in-person care, while simultaneously expanding access to support services and educational materials,” Pike said.

Studies have shown that people with dementia have higher rates of emergency department use compared to age-matched peers without a dementia diagnosis. Not only can these visits be

particularly stressful for people with dementia, but they incur additional costs to the health care system.

Telemedicine, or remote consultation with a health care provider, represents an alternative to in-person health care that could lead to better quality care at lower cost.

Study researchers enrolled 731 people with dementia from 22 senior living communities. Researchers found that over three and a half years, the telemedicine intervention reduced emergency department visits by 24%.

The Alzheimer’s Association Helpline – 800-272-3900 – is a free resource available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year in which master’s degree-level clinicians offer confidential emotional support, actionable information and referrals to additional resources in the local community.

The study found statistically significant improvements in caregiver’s emotional health, including a 27% improvement in caregiver emotional distress and 29% improvement in ability to manage stress. Additionally, 70% of callers surveyed put action steps into place within one week of calling the Helpline.

The “MyBrainRobbie” video series was piloted in 2018 with 303 French schoolchildren ages 6-11. A survey of the students found high levels of satisfaction with the video and students were able to recall seven of the eight brain-healthy behaviors.

Obesity in Black women outrageously high NNPA Newswire

Betty Busby, 55, has struggled with her weight since high school. “It’s in my genes to be chubby, and I have always thanked God that I have a man that loves my shape,” she said. “He still thinks I’m sexy with my small waistline, big hips and thighs. I will be forever grateful for that.”

However, Busby’s significant other has been upset – and sometimes frustrated – with her recent drop in weight. “I’m attempting to improve my health by dieting and exercising,” Busby explained.

She is under a diet regimen and is taking medication for high cholesterol and hypertension after feeling the pain of extra lower-body weight. “I sometimes get annoyed because he is constantly [overseeing] my meals and complains about the difference in hip size.”

In addition to health issues, Busby said her shape has caused problems in shopping for clothing that smaller women can typically buy off-the-rack.

African American women are more susceptible to being overweight or obese than any other race.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health has reported that roughly four out of five African American women are either overweight or suffering from obesity.

The statistics have a lot to do with the longstanding history of African American culture, socioeconomic status, stress and dietary habits that have been passed down from one generation to another.

Some will argue that there are a number of cultural barriers (family responsibilities, stressful lifestyle) that may also challenge or prevent some African American women from exercising regularly.

United States Surgeon General Regina Benjamin told the Chicago Tribune that, “Oftentimes

you get women saying, ‘I can’t exercise today because of my hair or get my hair wet.’”

For some, there’s a trade-off between preserving heat-required hairstyles and physical fitness and research suggests that misplaced vanity is at the root of the problem.

Some African American men and media have also supported plus-size and curvy women, which have made many overweight African American women feel comfortable in their skin.

The Washington Post and the Kaiser Family Foundation conducted a poll to get the perspective directly from the source.

The poll revealed that “although Black women are [generally] heavier than their white counterparts, they report having appreciably higher levels of self-esteem. That figure was 66 percent among Black women considered by government standards overweight or obese.”

Research also suggests that, as a culture, the majority of African American women see no harm in being too vain to take accountability for their health.

Pete Buttigieg recently spoke at Morehouse College in an effort to expand his appeal among Black voters who are critical to winning the Democratic presidential primary.

The 37-year-old white mayor of South Bend, Ind., is gaining momentum in the overwhelmingly white early voting states of Iowa and New Hampshire. But unless his campaign can broaden its reach to minorities, he could stall in more diverse states such as Nevada and South Carolina.

Buttigieg has spent recent weeks reaching out to Black Democratic figures, from well-known senior leaders to city and community level activists, and gets high marks for being an attentive listener. But the pressure is building to demonstrate he can win

The NFL is looking for the next generation of youth football stars to help usher in its second century.

The league has launched a casting call asking parents and youth coaches of boys and girls ages 9-12 to submit videos of the kids’ best moves on the football field for a chance to attend Super Bowl 54 in Miami and to appear in a follow-up commercial to last year’s epic star-studded banquet spot that kicked off the league’s 100th season.

In that spot, some of the game’s greats from past and present fought over a golden football that toppled from atop a giant cake when Marshawn Lynch’s attempt to sneak a dollop of frosting went horribly — or was it wonderfully? — wrong.

“We kicked off the 100th season in a big way. Now we want to create an even bigger juggernaut commercial, even more ambitious than before, that serves as the passing of the torch to this next generation of superstars,” NFL chief marketing officer Tim Ellis said.

In a spot launching “The Next 100 Super Bowl Contest,” Deion Sanders calls for parents and youth coaches to send in videos showcasing their kids’ best moves and highlighting their passion for America’s most popular sport.

Thirty-two kids will be selected to attend the Super Bowl and appear in the new spot along with retired and current superstars.

“We started looking at a lot of the videos that kids are putting online of themselves playing and we were just blown away at how amazing some of their moves were and how good they were at that age,” Ellis told The Associated Press. “I mean, some of these kids were doing these onehanded catches like Odell Beckham Jr. We were just all like clapping and yelling and celebrating like, how can these kids be this good at this age? It’s incredible.”

Ellis said “the reason we wanted to get someone like Deion, who is a revered player by our generation, is that we knew he could help us get that level of awareness and get people really talking about this. And ultimately, our goal is to get this talked about on the school grounds, right? We want all the kids talking about it at school, together with their parents, among the community and really drive that level of passion and excitement to encourage kids to think about football in a different way and to actually participate.”

Sanders said he’s honored to be involved in the new project that caps the league’s yearlong celebration of its centennial season.

“I didn’t just become ‘Prime Time’ when I reached the NFL,” Sanders said. “It started on a youth football field in Fort Myers, Florida. That’s when I was doing the Billy ‘White Shoes’ Johnson, emulating some of the stars that were prevalent and current in the NFL. That’s where that started; I just took it to the next level, the next stage. And that’s what some of these youngsters are having an opportunity to do.”

Parents and coaches, with parental permission, can submit their kids’ video showcasing their skills at tackle or flag football at PlayFootball.com/Next100.

Sanders said he was especially thrilled the league is looking for both boys and girls: “My daughter, she played for my youth football team all the way up to 12 years old and she played tackle, not just flag, and she loved every minute of it.”

A Hall of Fame defensive back who also starred in Major League Baseball, Sanders said some of today’s rising NFL stars such as Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson aren’t just great football players but “bona fide athletes. They played dual sports coming up. These guys did it all. And that’s the kind of love and excitement and passion that we want” to find in this national casting call.

Ellis said the NFL is expecting “tens of thousands of videos” to be submitted and the league’s teams will help narrow down the finalists.

“At the end of this commercial, we will say, ‘Here’s to the next 100,’” Ellis said. “So, we thought it was appropriate for us to use this unique opportunity as a passing of the torch.”

Donnie Corley wants to help TSU

T

exas Southern University junior college transfer receiver Donnie Corley has easily been the biggest surprise in the SWAC this season.

Just throw the ball anywhere in the vicinity of speedy No.9 and he will make a play. As a result, Corley has a sizeable lead in the SWAC in receiving yards per game at 107.8 and he also has caught 65 passes for 970 yards and three touchdowns.

But the impressive stats don’t impress Corley as much the Tigers winless record bothers him. The way he sees it is he has needed to do even more.

“I’m leading the SWAC and that is cool but we are 0-10 so I can’t sit here and be all happy with the stats,” Corley said.

“We’ve lost a lot of close games so maybe I could have done more. I wasn’t going 10-for-10 or 11-for-11 so maybe the times I didn’t catch the ball, I maybe needed to make those plays, maybe I could have picked up another block and we maybe could have got some wins.”

Time is running out for Corley and Tigers to avoid a winless season. Their final game is Saturday, Nov. 23 against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

But Corley, who could be on the NFL’s radar following his only season at TSU, remains focused on getting that elusive win.

“Definitely my mindset is to win and to do the best that I can for my team.

That’s all I can do,” he said. “Usually when a player tries to do too much and not what the coach asks mistakes happen.

So really my focus is just doing what the coaches ask me to do and then let all of the other stuff happens as it happens.”

It’s that attitude that first-year TSU coach Clarence McKinney has appreciated most. McKinney said Corley has remained committed to his teammates and winning.

“He is still the same kid. He wants to win as bad as anyone,” McKinney said.

“He continues to come to work, he continues to show up and he tries to motivate his teammates as best that he can. And he tries to make plays when we ask him to make plays.”

Corley perhaps appreciates this opportunity most because of the bumpy road that brought the 6-foot-2 receiver to TSU to begin with. A four-star recruit out of Detroit, he began his career at Michigan State and was impressive as a true freshman in 2016.

He played extensively on both sides of the ball and was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman team and made the Football Writer’s Association of America’s Freshman All-America Team as an all-purpose player.

gan State shortly after his freshman season when he and two other teammates were charged with sexual assault. Corley landed at Coachoma Community College in Oklahoma last year where he put up eye-catching numbers. That’s what landed him here at TSU where he now feels at home.

“Definitely this opportunity I’m very grateful to have,” Corley said. My mindset has never changed

whether I was in high school or wherever, the mindset is to get to the league. That’s still my goal.”

McKinney believes he has what it takes to get to the NFL. “I think he is a Sunday guy,” McKinney said. “He has the skills and ability to play at that level, and he has the work ethic. I think he just needs the opportunity to show those guys he is a talent who deserves an opportunity to play at that level.”
