TSU prepares for Rudley’s departure In response to the resignation of Texas Southern University President Dr. John M. Rudley, a transition team will be appointed in the coming weeks and TSU will hire a national search firm to work with Rudley in identifying his replacement.

Rudley announced during the university’s recent winter commencement ceremony that he will step down as president at the conclusion of the 20152016 academic year.

Rudley thanked former board chairman Glenn O. Lewis, his wife Docia and the Board of Regents for Dr. John Rudley their support. He plans to address TSU faculty, students, staff and community partners in the coming months.

“When I arrived eight years ago, I always felt that I would come in with [President] Obama and go out with him,” Rudley said. “Today, I know that my instincts were correct. I thank you all for your support during my time as president of Texas Southern University.”

In the interim, Rudley will continue to address urgent issues affecting the university and push for a few needed changes in preparation for his successor.

Rudley previously served as interim chancellor of the University of Houston System and interim president of UH. He also served six years as UH vice chancellor/vice president for administration and finance.

Audrey Lawson remembered for community service Audrey Lawson, a well-known Houston civic leader and founding first lady of Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, died Dec. 12 at the age of 83. She was the wife of Wheeler Avenue founder and activist Rev. William “Bill” Lawson and the mother of KTRK-Channel 13 anchor Melanie Lawson.

Services will be held Friday, Dec. 18 at Wheeler, located at 3826 Wheeler Ave. The viewing is at 9 a.m. and the funeral is at 11 a.m.

The Lawsons founded Wheeler Avenue in 1962 in their home. Mrs. Lawson was a force

behind many of the church’s programs and ministries, including an infant and children’s school, a community center and rites of passage program.

Mrs. Lawson’s community involvement included serving as former board president of the Ensemble Theatre. Alaina King Bedford, Ensemble board president, said some knew Mrs. Lawson as the wife of Rev. Lawson, but most knew that she was the “giant behind the giant.”

“Mrs. Lawson was so many things to so many people and organizations over a lifetime of committed, unwavering and selfless service,”

Bedford said. “Her contributions are innumerable and would fill a list too long to include.”

Bedford added that Mrs. Lawson “was the passion and light that kept the doors of the Ensemble Theatre open for many years.”

Mrs. Lawson grew up in St. Louis and attended Tennessee State University. In 1952 she began a courtship by mail with Rev. Lawson, and they exchanged more than 600 letters. They were married in January, 1954.

Mrs. Lawson’s other survivors include her daughters Cheryl and Roxanne and son Eric.

High school graduation rate hits record high U.S. students are graduating from high school at a higher rate than ever before, according to data released by the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics.

The nation’s high school graduation rate hit 82 percent in 2013-14, the highest level since states adopted a new uniform way of calculating graduation rates five years ago.

The gap between white students and Black and Hispanic students receiving high school diplomas continues to narrow, and traditionally underserved populations like English language learners and students with disabilities continue to make gains, the data show.

“America’s students have achieved another record milestone by improving graduation rates for a fourth year,” U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said.

“The hard work of teachers, administrators, students and their families has made these gains possible and as a result many more students will have a better chance of going to college, getting a good job, owning their own home, and supporting a family.

“We can take pride as a nation in knowing that we’re

seeing promising gains, including for students of color,” Duncan said.

He added that a high school diploma is a critical and attainable key to future success in college, in the workforce and in life.

“It is encouraging to see our graduation rate on the rise and I applaud the hard work we know it takes to see this increase,” he said. “But too many students never get their diploma, never walk across the graduation stage and while our dropout numbers are also decreasing, we remain committed to urgently closing the gaps that still exist in too many schools and in too many communities.”

Since 2010, states, districts and schools have been using a new, common metric – the adjusted cohort graduation rate – to promote greater accountability and develop strategies that will help reduce dropout rates and increase graduation rates in schools nationwide.

The Department of Education said it has invested more than $1.5 billion in early learning, implemented strategies that improve achievement and close opportunity gaps, and awarded billions of dollars through various grant programs.

Black college enrollment decline continues Black enrollment in higher education institutions across the United States continues to fall, according to statistics in a new report by the U.S. Department of Education.

The report focused on enrollments at Title IV institutions – those allowed to participate in federal student financial assistance programs – in fall 2014.

According to the report, Black students comprised 13.2 percent (a little over 2.7 million) of the 20,663,464 undergraduate and graduate students who enrolled in Title IV tertiary education institutions in 2014.

However, fewer African-American students enrolled in 2014 than in 2013. The same report from last

year showed that 2,790,255 African-Americans enrolled at Title IV institutions in the U.S. in the fall of 2013, comprising 13.4 percent of total admissions.

Changes in federal student financial aid programs in recent years could have a significant impact on the ability of African Americans to afford and enroll in college.

In 2011, for example, the Education Department imposed new stringent credit eligibility requirements for the Parent PLUS Loan program, which allow parents to borrow money to finance their children’s college educations. Congress also lowered the lifetime eligibility for Pell Grants to six years in addition to other changes.

BLACK CONGRESSIONAL LEADERS condemned Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia for his comments questioning the intelligence level of Black students. During oral arguments in the affirmative action case Fisher vs.

University of Texas at Austin, Scalia questioned the school’s affirmative action policy by suggesting that Black students might benefit from a “slower-track” education. “His suggestion that African-Americans would fare better at schools that are ‘less advanced’ or on a ‘slow-track’ reminds me of the kind of prejudice that led to separate and unequal school systems,” said Congressman John Lewis. Congressional Black Caucus Chair G.K. Butterfield said Scalia’s remarks were “disgusting, inaccurate, and insulting” to African-Americans……..NATIONAL URBAN LEAGUE President and CEO Marc H. Morial condemned “hate speech and violence” directed toward Muslims in America.

“In the last month, there have been two dozen anti-Muslim attacks in the United States, ranging from a cabdriver shot in Pittsburgh to the deliberate torching of a Somali restaurant in Grand Forks, N.D.,” Morial said. “The owner of a food market in Queens was beaten by a customer who vowed to “kill Muslims.” Morial also criticized Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s call to ban all Muslims from entering the United States……..SAM’S CLUB BLACK CEO Rosalind Brewer is being accused of discriminating against white men following a CNN interview where she discussed the importance of workforce diversity. Some customers are now accusing Brewer of being “racist” and are threatening to boycott Sam’s Club, a division of Wal-Mart. In discussing a recent incident Brewer said, “Just today we met with a supplier and the entire other side of the table was all Caucasian males. That was interesting. I decided not to talk about it directly with [the supplier’s] folks in the room because there were actually no female, like, levels down. So I’m going to place a call to him.”

John Boyega

breaks out in ‘Star Wars’ sequel Twenty-three-year-old British actor John Boyega has landed a choice role in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” which comes to theaters on Dec. 18.

It is one of the most anticipated movies ever, and is expected to break box office records.

Boyega portrays Finn, a trained warrior desperate to escape his past. He is plunged into adventure as his conscience drives him “down a heroic, but dangerous, path.”

His co-stars include original cast members Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher, and new cast members Daisy Ridley and Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong’o.

When Boyega appeared in the first “Force Awakens” trailer, some fans were surprised John Boyega to see a Black Stormtrooper, and expressed their displeasure on social media.

“I’m in the movie, what are you going to do about it?” Boyega said. “You either enjoy it or you don’t. I’m not saying get used to the future, but what is already happening. People of color and women are increasingly being shown on-screen. For things to be whitewashed just doesn’t make sense.”

On a positive note, Boyega said the film should satisfy hardcore fans and new fans alike.

Kwanzaa was created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, professor and chair of Africana Studies at California State University, Long Beach.

“As an African-American and Pan-African holiday celebrated by millions throughout the world African community, Kwanzaa brings a cultural message which speaks to the best of what it means to be African and human in the fullest sense,” Karenga said.

We need to know there are things we can do to access the power we need to change conditions. Certainly, that would offer us a Merry Christmas.”

HISD hires search firm, approves bond funding The HISD Board of Education voted to hire a search firm to help find a replacement for outgoing Superintendent Terry Grier.

Trustees hired Ray and Associates, an Iowa-based firm that specializes in searches for educational executives and leaders. The firm was among four companies that responded to a request for proposals.

The search firm will be tasked with developing a superintendent candidate profile. The firm will help trustees host community meetings and gather input from various district stakeholders, including parents and students, schoolbased staff, district employees, and business and community members.

The process is expected to begin in January. Grier plans to step down in March.

The board also approved a funding proposal that would add up to $212.4 million to the bond program to cover significant increases in inflation and construction costs.

HISD said the additional money will help ensure all bond projects are completed as described to voters in the 2012 election. Voters overwhelmingly approved a $1.89 billion bond calling for the reconstruction or renovation of 40 schools across the district, including

Though the additional funding isn’t needed immediately, administrators sought authorization to spend the dollars for project planning and design purposes. The $212.4 million will only be spent if it still is needed after all other bond funds are exhausted.

n the same day that President Barack Obama gave a stirring and historically grounded commemoration regarding the 150th anniversary of the passage of the 13th Amendment, the one that “abolished” slavery, Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia chose to disregard tenets of equality and opportunity from the bench.

During the hearing for Fisher V. University of Texas, he suggested that African-American students would benefit more if they went to “lesser track” schools. His verbatim comments: “There are those who contend that it does not benefit African-Americans to get them into the University of Texas, where they do not do well — as opposed to having them go to a less advanced school, a slower-track school where they do well,” Scalia said.

“One of the briefs pointed out that most of the Black scientists in this country don’t come from schools like the University of Texas. They come from lesser schools where they do not feel that they’re being pushed ahead in classes that are too fast for them.”

What does Justice Scalia mean by “lesser schools?” Does he suggest that the African- Americans, most at the top 10 percent of their high school class (as required by Texas law) can’t compete with their peers, similarly situated students at the top of their classes?

Abigail Fisher, who is bringing this lawsuit, was deficient, and judged as so. She was not in the top 10 percent at her Texas high school; according to the Top Ten Percent Plan any graduating senior in the top 10 percent of their graduating class receives admission to the public university in the state.

Abigail Fisher is an ordinary white girl who was so seeped in white skin privilege that she fully expected to have her way.

She is a whiner who has been enabled by the anti-affirmative action crowd.

Lots of students don’t get into their first choice school. Most recover – they go to their second or third choice, graduate, and manage their lives happily. From time to time, they may ruminate that they would have liked to have their first choice. But they are grown people, used to a setback (who isn’t), and prepared to move on with their lives.

They know they weren’t in the top 10 percent, and they are happy if they made the second cut at UT, or content to go to another school and excel. Not Fisher. Buttressed by the dollars that come from affirmative action opponents, she is willing to be the poster girl for inadequacy.

From his remarks from the Supreme Court bench, Scalia is willing to consider her point and exhibit his own racism. What does he mean by “lesser schools?” Is he familiar with the data on African-American accomplishment?

Scalia needs to look at the data before running his mouth.

Both African-American and white students go to schools that are less highly rated than UT. Most of them succeed. They would have succeeded at UT, too. Regardless of race, they accept the fact that, not in the top 10 percent of their class, they were not entitled to automatic admission. After that, their admission was a roll of the dice.

If there is a poster girl for fairness, she isn’t Abigail Fisher.

To lift her up is to embrace the arrogance of white skin privilege.

To lift her up is a disgraceful rebuff to UT students who achieve against all odds. To denigrate the students who were admitted instead of Fisher is a laughable attempt by a so-called justice to justify his injustice.

The election of Sylvester Turner as mayor of the City of Houston is a testament to the reality that dreams do come true. It is often said that a dream deferred is not a dream denied. With persistence, patience and perseverance, success can be achieved.

It is evidence that things don’t necessarily come in our time, but in GOD’s time.

It has been a long time coming. Turner ran for mayor twice over the last 25 years and the journey has not been easy. Many would have given up. Instead we have watched him as he has kept his eyes on the ball while developing his skills and building relationships with friends and foes.

Despite the disappointments and defeats, he has been committed to service, which goes beyond his constituents and benefits the citizens of Houston and the State of Texas: fighting for fairer utility rates, quality healthcare and better education for our children.

His policies have not been limited to minorities but for the betterment of all. Considering this fact alone, he deserves our praise for his herculean efforts in the State Legislature and beyond.

Now as the incoming mayor of the fourth largest city in the nation, Turner has a huge job of bringing a city divided together to join forces for the common good of our great city.

In addition, the city’s top challenges reflect a list of problems that have been kicked down the road for years and now he is expected to fix them: potholes, pensions, debt, and more.

Turner will need all of the skill sets of negotiation, consensus-building and budgetcutting he demonstrated on the House Appropriations Committee to navigate the issues confronting our city. Persistence, patience and perseverance will once again be a part of his arsenal to achieve success.

As the year comes to a close and Turner prepares to take his turn in office, our prayers are with him and we wish him a great fouryear term as mayor of the city of Houston.

Astros re-sign reliever Sipp

t’s the holiday season and we all know it’s better to give than receive. In just two seasons with the Astros, Tony Sipp has proven to be one of the team’s most reliable arms in the bullpen. To that end, the team played Santa recently and presented the talented left-handed reliever with a three-year, $18 million contract under the tree.

Acquired by the Astros after being released by the Padres in 2014, Sipp has taken advantage of the opportunity, and experienced a breakout, career season in 2015. He had a 3-4 record with a 1.99 ERA in 60 games for the Astros last season, holding right-handers to a .190 batting average. His ERA ranked second in the American League among lefty relievers, the lowest of his career.

Astros GM Jeff Luhnow explained why signing Sipp was a priority.

“He’s been a terrific contributor on this team, a terrific member of the clubhouse and community, and we’re delighted to have him back,” Luhnow said.

Team manager A.J. Hinch is another fan of Sipp and what he brings to the Astros’ bullpen.

“Tony and I go back awhile and we were reunited last year,” Hinch said. “I realized how valuable he was from day one. He doesn’t care what role he’s pitching. He doesn’t care who’s up to bat, left-handed, right-handed, early, late.

He did a little bit of everything for us.

“This addition makes me feel good knowing I have someone I can use in the most important outs against any hitter in any combination. He gets it done at a high level,” Hinch said.

In Sipp’s mind, staying with the Astros was always his preference.

“It says a lot because I felt like this was home, this is where I wanted to be,” Sipp said. “I made it easy to bring me back because I verbalized how much I did like this organization and wanted to stick around. I can see the talent on this team. I’d hate to have to depart from the team; you see so much potential with the young core talent we have. I just want to be a part of it.”

Sipp has struggled to make MLB rosters and secure contracts throughout his seven-year career, and the trust the team showed by giving him a three-year deal was a relief.

“I love the guys,” Sipp said. “I feel like we’re a family.

To know I’ll be around for at least three more years, hopefully longer, is definitely a weight off my back, and I can continue to add whatever DNA I can add on this team and just do my part and help the young guys grow.”

ith the George Ranch High School varsity football team in unchartered territory, head coach Ricky Tullos needed someone to step to the forefront. Running back Darius Anderson answered the call.

Breaking a two-year curse of having its season end in the regional finals against Temple, George Ranch was making its first appearance in the state semifinals and facing a formidable opponent in Cedar Park Vista Ridge at NRG Stadium.

Anderson, the Touchdown Club of Houston’s 2015 Offensive Player of the Year, rose to the occasion with 277 yards on 18 carries and two 75-yard TD runs to pave the way to a 42-23 victory. The 15-0 Longhorns will return to NRG Stadium on Dec. 18 to play Mansfield Lake Ridge at 8 p.m. in the Class 5A Division I final.

“This was our first time here [state semis] and it was a big game for us,” Anderson said. “I just wanted to step up and be a leader for my team.

“This is the best offensive line I’ve ever run behind. Most of these guys I’ve played with since the seventh grade,” Anderson said. “I don’t think any defense can stop our running game. But if we have to we can go to our passing game.”

George Ranch amassed 639 rushing yards against Vista Ridge. Alex Fontenot added 162 yards on 16 carries and a score.

Longhorns’ quarterback Antonio Jackson was an efficient 6-of-8 passing for 162 yards and two touchdowns.

“The Temple game gave us more momentum to work harder in practice and bring that intensity to the next game,” Anderson said.

“To be able to play for a state championship is great. I was a little emotional about it earlier because we kept being stopped in the fourth round,” Anderson said. “This is a dream come true.

Anderson has rushed for 2,000 yards and scored 29 touchdowns this season. The 5-foot-11 and 194-pound senior, who has committed to the University of Missouri, knows one area the Longhorns will have to clean up in order to win the school’s first state football title.

George Ranch was penalized 12 times for 118 yards against Cedar Park Vista Ridge. “I told the guys at halftime that we were going against Vista Ridge and the referees,” Anderson said. “Not a lot of calls were going our way.

“I’ll step it up and I just want everybody to do their jobs and if you make a mistake, make it going 110 percent,” Anderson said.

Tullos, who was recently named the Touchdown Club of Houston’s High School Coach of the Year, continues to be amazed by his senior running back.

“Darius gets better and better every day I believe,” Tullos said. “Nothing surprises me about him. I’ve come to the point that it doesn’t surprise me when he makes an outstanding run or an outstanding play.

“He’s such a special talent. I’m just glad he plays for George Ranch,” Tullos said.

Katy seeks eighth title Two unbeaten Texas high school football powerhouses will meet in the Class 6A Division II state championship game Dec. 19 at 8 p.m. in NRG Stadium when Katy takes on Lake Travis. Katy advanced with a 38-0 victory over previously undefeated Cibolo Steele in San Antonio. The 15-0 Tigers will be in the state finals for the fourth year in a row and will be seeking the school’s eighth state football championship. Katy has shutout 10 of its 15 opponents during the 2015 season.

Lake Travis is making its first trip to the finals since winning five consecutive state titles in then-Class 4A from 2007 to 2011. Lake Travis defeated Mansfield 49-21 in the other state semifinal.
