They said they respect history but have waited for infrastructure upgrades for years. Project developer ITEX Group and the City of Houston Housing and Community Development Department commemorated the event by unveiling plans for the $41 million mixed-use living facility. The Village at Palm Center will feature 154 apartment units, 68 townhomes, and 14,500 square feet of retail space, in addition to two playgrounds, a fitness center and green space. Of the 222 rental units, 200 will target low- to moderate-income residents. The remaining units will rent at market rates……...HISD TEAMED UP with Code.org to announce a new partnership that aims to bring computer science education to all HISD campuses over the next three years. Rather than focusing simply on computer programming, the goal is to use coding to emphasize the underlying principles of logic, creative thinking and expression in all academic areas. The three-year partnership will include professional development opportunities for teachers and access to online content delivery systems, as well as funding for professional development and classroom supplies. Coding and computer science education not only help prepare students for high-wage, high-demand, 21st century jobs, but they also help students become better thinkers and learners.

Bill Cosby’s accusers Twenty-three women have publicly accused Bill Cosby of drugging, raping, coercing or sexually assaulting them. Most of the women allege that Cosby either offered them pills or drugged them by spiking their drinks. Former model Beverly Johnson is Cosby’s most famous accuser, and said he drugged her and roughed her up but did not sexually assault her. Johnson, a history-making model in the 1970s, appeared on more than 500 magazine covers. She later became an actress and also became known for a wig collection that bears her name. Now 62, Johnson said she met Cosby when she was called about auditioning for a small role on “The Cosby Show” in the mid-1980s. Johnson said she decided not to go public with the incident after it happened. “A voice in my head kept whispering, ‘Black men have enough enemies out there already, they certainly don’t need someone like you, an African-American with a familiar face and a famous name, fanning the flames’. “For a long time I thought it was something that only happened to me, and that I was somehow responsible,” she added. “So I kept my secret to myself, believing this truth needed to remain in the darkness. “But the last four weeks have changed everything, as so many women have shared similar stories, of which the press have belatedly taken heed.” Here is a list of Cosby’s accusers and the year they said the incidents occurred. 1. Young activists push Obama on police NNPA News Service

In an Oval Office meeting, a group of young activists met with President Obama to discuss the crippling effects of police brutality in the Black community and the need for systemic reform that sparked protests following the shooting death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo. The activists’ list of demands included the demilitarization of local police departments, investing in community-led restorative justice programs, and enhancing data collection of police activity. Tef-Poe, a St. Louis hip-hop artist, said that the movement is gaining traction among young

people and a bridge is being built between the young activists and the older generation. “People are starting to jump on board at an alarming rate and the next move is to sustain this and to push for real comprehensive accountability concerning racial profiling and police brutality,” he said. Obama said that when any part of the American family does not feel like it is being treated fairly, that’s a problem for all of us. “It’s not just a problem for a particular community or a particular demographic. It means that we are not as strong a country as we can be,” Obama said.

‘Selma’ revisits Civil Rights Movement

T

he civil rights drama “Selma” is receiving critical acclaim while serving as a reminder of the injustices African-Americans still face today. “Selma” was named top film of the year by the African-American Film Critics Association (AAFCA), and is nominated for a number of NAACP Image Awards and Golden Globe Awards. The Paramount film, which centers around Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., begins a limited Oscar-qualifying theatrical run on Dec. 25 and expands nationwide on Jan. 9. Davis Oyelowo portrays King and Carmen Ejogo portrays Coretta Scott King. Oprah Winfrey, one of the film’s producers, stars as Alabama freedom fighter Annie Lee Cooper. Other stars include Cuba Gooding Jr., Martin Sheen, Common, Niecy Nash, Wendell Pierce and Lorraine Toussaint. Winfrey said the movie chronicles a crucial time in American history, and compares it to current events in Ferguson, Mo and other cities. In March, 1965, demonstrators faced violence as they attempted to march from Selma, Ala., to Montgomery, Ala., to demand voting rights for Black people. During one march at the Edmund Pettus Bridge, law enforcement officers attacked protesters with billy clubs and tear gas, driving them back to Selma. King later led thousands of demonstrators dur-

Enjoy the holidays without gaining weight

he holidays are here, along with all the parties and get-togethers that go with them. But, all these celebrations sometimes mean overeating and weight gain. On average, Americans gain one to two pounds during the holiday season. Eating healthy is difficult this time of year with a cookie here and some pie there. If you have settled into an exercise routine and healthy diet but are worried about undoing all the good you have done all year long, here are some tips from Dr. Kenneth W. Hollis of Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital to make healthy choices this holiday season. Don’t skip meals in preparation for a feast. Do Dr. Kenneth W. Hollis not attend a party hungry. Have a snack such as a piece of fruit or vegetable beforehand to make you feel full. Try balancing larger, higher calorie meals with lighter choices the rest of the day. Avoid appetizers, which can become an opportunity for mindless eating. Instead, choose vegetables, chicken, and fish without cream sauces, fiber grains or beans. You are at a party so socialize to minimize the temptation. Limit alcohol intake because alcohol adds calories and contains no nutrients. Drink in moderation and hydrate with

Offer to help with dishes, clear the table, or play a game with the kids. Bring a healthy dish to a holiday gathering. This is your time to show how healthy foods can be just as good. Modify your recipes. Substitute an equal amount of fruit puree like applesauce for oil in cake, brownies, or bread. The fruit will add flavor and keep your baked goods moist. Use fat-free milk, yogurt, sour cream, and cream cheese instead of the whole-fat products. Try vanilla fat free yogurt instead of whipped cream on your favorite desserts. Instead of frying, use other cooking methods such as baking, grilling, or roasting. Skim the fat right off the top of gravies and sauces with a slotted spoon. Enjoy the holiday season by focusing on your family and friends. You do not have to miss out on the holiday foods you love. Small cuts in calories will make a big difference throughout the entire holiday season. The most important things are moderation and to return to your regular routine after the holidays. (If you are looking to change your life and think weight loss surgery is right for you, check out Memorial Hermann’s NewStart surgical and medical weight loss program. For more information visit www.weightloss.memorialhermann.org).

water between adult beverages. Non-alcoholic beverages can also be high in sugar and calories. Leave the table when you are finished. If you linger, you may be tempted to eat even though you are not hungry.

Tips for exercise success In addition to healthy eating, regular exercise can help you prevent excess weight gain and maintain weight loss. Exercise can also reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease, reduce your risk of type 2 diabetes, reduce your risk of some cancers, strengthen your bones and muscles, improve your mental health and mood and increase your chances of living longer. Whether you walk, run, swim, play tennis, participate in aerobics or enjoy other forms of exercise, here are some tips for success from the American Heart Association. (Before beginning an exercise program, check with your doctor first). Dress for success. Wear comfortable, properly fitted athletic shoes and comfortable, loose-fitting clothing appropriate for the weather and the activity. Make the time. Start slowly. Gradually build up to at least 30 minutes of activity on most or all days of the week (or whatever your doctor recommends). Exercise at the same time of day so it becomes a regular part of your lifestyle. For example, you might walk every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from noon to 12:30 p.m. Look for chances to be more active during the day. Walk the mall before shopping, take the stairs instead of the escalator or take 10-15 minute breaks while watching TV or sitting for walking or some other activity. Keep reasonable expectations of yourself. Don’t get discouraged if you stop for a while. Get started again gradually and work up to your old pace. Make it fun. Choose activities that are fun, not exhausting. Add variety. Develop a repertoire of several activities that you can enjoy. That way, exercise will never seem boring or routine. Walk one day, swim the next, then go for a bike ride on the weekend. Ask family and friends to join you. You may be more likely to stick with it if you have company. Or join an exercise group, health club or community center. Many churches and senior centers offer exercise programs too. Track and celebrate your success. Note your activities on a calendar or in a logbook. Write down the distance or length of time of your activity and how you feel after each session. Keep a record of your activities. Reward yourself at special milestones with non-food items. Nothing motivates like success.

Attorney Benjamin Crump traveled to Houston to represent Bobby, Marian and Robbie Tolan.

Benjamin Crump on

CIVIL RIGHTS ISSUES

T

By KAM WILLIAMS Special to the Defender

hrough his legal prowess and advocacy in the Trayvon Martin case, the Martin Lee Anderson Boot Camp case and the Robbie Tolan Supreme Court case among others, Tallahassee attorney Benjamin Crump has already secured a significant legacy founded in constitutional law. His landmark civil rights legal battles will be taught in textbooks and referenced by both this and future generations interested in understanding the scope of our fundamental protections. In spite of his immense professional responsibilities, Crump still finds time for involvement with local, state and national causes and charities. He served as chairman of Legal Services of North Florida, and donated $1 million to the organization’s Capital Campaign to ensure that poor people would continue to have quality legal representation. He is president-elect of the National Bar Association and served as general counsel to the Tallahassee Chapter of the NAACP. Crump and his law partner Daryl Parks have endowed scholarships for minority students at Florida A&M University, Livingston College, Florida State University and Bethune Cookman University. Crump received his law degree and undergraduate degree from Florida State. He and his wife, Dr. Genae Crump, have a daughter and are guardians of two adopted cousins. Here, he addresses the “Black Lives Matter!” movement sweeping the nation in the wake of the failure of grand juries to indict police officers in the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner. KW: You have agreed to represent the family of

Tamir Rice, the 12-year-old shot by a cop in Cleveland. What fuels your continuing passion and search for justice in the face of a criminal justice system that seems broken to many of us? BC: I was just talking to some folks who said, “Ben, you take these cases, and you make a big issue of holding police officers and the killers of our children accountable in the criminal courts, and of making them to go to jail, when you know the history is that police offers don’t get put in jail when they kill little black and brown boys. You win these multimillion dollar victories in the civil courts, but because the officers don’t go to jail, people think you lost the case. Why do you keep insisting on trying to have the police officers put behind bars?” I [told them] I just can’t bring myself to sell out as if it’s just about money. I know we’re going to win the civil suit in all these cases. But that’s not full justice. Why is everybody else entitled to full justice except our people and our children? Full justice means you discourage the police from ever doing this again because people will know that if you kill our children, you’ll have to do the perp walk and go to jail… If you kill a Black person, there’s a good chance you won’t [do time] but if you kill a white person, everybody knows you’re going to prison. We say our lives are just as valuable. KW: What do you tell people when they feel like the legal system is weighted against them? BC: I tell them that it’s still the best system in the world, and that we have to fight to make America be America for all of us. Crump’s well-known cases • Represents Robbie Tolan, who in 2008 was seriously wounded in the driveway of his parents’ home by a white Bellaire police officer. The Supreme Court ruled earlier this year that an appeals court had to revisit the case. A September 2015 trial date has been set for Tolan’s lawsuit against Bellaire. • Represented Leeronnie Ogletree, a 39-year-old who was sexually molested by a Boston Red Sox Clubhouse manager when he was a ball boy. The Red Sox settled a $3.15 million federal lawsuit brought against them by Ogletree and seven others who said they were molested. • Pursued justice on behalf of the parents of Martin Lee Anderson, a 14-yearold who died the day after he was beaten and suffocated at the Panama City, Bay County juvenile boot camp. The case was resolved for the highest amount ever paid by for an individual wrongful death in Florida. • Received worldwide acclaim as the lead attorney for the family of Trayvon Martin, who was killed by a neighborhood watch volunteer, George Zimmerman in Sanford, Fla. • Helped focus national attention on Kendrick Johnson, a 17-year-old teen found dead in a rolled up wrestling mat in a Georgia high school gym under suspicious circumstances. Crump was able to get the U.S. Attorney’s office to launch a federal investigation after the local sheriff closed the case.

a significant step in the right direction. I believe that having our officers wear body cameras can bring much-needed additional transparency to communities in many future controversial police/civilian actions,” he said. Green also called for justice and action nationwide. “We are at a critical turning point in the history of our nation where people of good will who believe in liberty and justice for all must actively be a part of the solution or passively be a part of the problem,” he said.

paper titled, “Police Don’t Shoot White Men in the Back.” You just never heard about police accidentally shooting a white man who’s retreating. What that says is a flaw in the system allows police officers to be immune for killing colored people. If you think about the grand jury system, that’s exactly what happens. You have local prosecutors who have a symbiotic relationship with the local police officers, and they have no relationship with and many times no regard for the Black person dead on the ground. If we keep doing things the same way and

expect a different result, that’s the definition of insanity. So, we need special prosecutors with no relationship to the police departments, if we really want to have independent investigations and trials. KW: What do you think can bring peace to the nation in the wake of the failure of the Brown and Garner grand juries to indict? BC: Swift action by the federal Department of Justice. Other than that, the people are really feeling that the system isn’t fair and that folks in their community can’t get equal justice. KW: How would you assess the state of race relations in America? BC: With the Ferguson decision and then the Eric Garner decision within seven days after that, I think things are tenuous, at best. This could be a defining point for the entire United States of America, because we all need to be better than we’ve been previously. KW: Have you been surprised by the die-ins and other mass demonstrations we’ve seen lately all over the country? BC: I think we have tough times because some of the frustration from Trayvon flowed over to Michael Brown. Now the Michael Brown frustration is flowing over to Eric Garner, and I think the Eric Garner frustration is going to flow over to Tamir Rice. People are still trying to come to grips with these decisions that don’t seem rational and are certainly not reflective of equal justice. KW: Do you think all the attacks on people of color by police are symptomatic of a racist society or of a class society where people of color have no value or voice? BC: I think it’s a little of both. I think they devalue our lives. We have to turn the slogan “Black lives matter!” into a reality because our lives do matter.

he phenomenon we have seen in America since the announcement of the non-indictments of officers in the killings of Michael Brown and Eric Garner is new to a generation, but not to the nation. Young people have always helped to fuel historic social change. We must not forget that 50 years ago, it was young people on that bridge in Selma, Ala.; young people sitting-in in Greensboro, N.C.; young people riding freedom buses all over this nation, challenging conventional laws and the status quo; and young people like Schwerner, Goodman and Chaney losing their lives in Philadelphia, Miss. A multicultural band of young people, united with historic civil rights organizations, legislators, clergy, and everyday Americans who decided that it was time for our country to do better and be better, have been the impetus for so many of the changes we’ve witnessed as a nation through the decades. Millions of Americans have now taken to the streets and to social media not because the problems that have caused the outrage just began yesterday, but because sometimes difficult circumstances present a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to bring about historic change. Now is that time. Now is our time. This conversation and the subsequent action that will result from it will continue because we remain committed to the idea that these cases – Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Akai Gurley, Tamir Rice, John Crawford, Marlene Pinnock and others – do not end where they are. In addition to the opportunity for the Justice Department to conduct independent investigations, we each have an opportunity to participate in our great democracy by helping to ensure that the America of tomorrow is better than who we are today. For our part, the National Urban League has developed the following 10-Point Justice Plan for Police Reform and Accountability. We believe that these action steps will be a major step forward in helping to repair policecommunity relations in cities across America, in significantly reducing inappropriate use of excessive force by law enforcement, particu-

he awardwinning Digital Media Academy at Hightower High School in Fort Bend ISD provides students with an interest in movie/broadcasting, photo, and digital graphics the opportunity to receive in-depth exposure and skills applicable to their career pathways. For the second consecutive year, the Defender has partnered with the academy to give selected students the opportunity to get an up close and personal look at a career that many of them will be pursuing in college and beyond. A coincidental conversation between Defender sports editor Max Edison and Digital Media Academy (DMA) instructor Herb Toler led to the opportunity for students. “Herb and I are both alums of Sam Houston State’s School of Communications,” Edison recalled. “He told me about state-of-the-art hardware and software they were using and that it was comparable to what we had worked with in college. He also told me that many of the students were transitioning from the academy to study digital media/ communications in college and had a definite advantage. “It dawned on me that in a market the size of Houston, there were many events that the Defender sports department had access to that would serve as excellent incentives that Herb could use for students in the academy that had shown a genuine aptitude and interest in pursuing the industry on the college level,” Edison continued. “It was a way for the Defender to sow a seed into the career of some of our young people and motivate the next generation in our industry” With that thought in mind the relationship

Over the past two years selected DMA students have had full media access to cover a variety of local sports events including the Labor Day Classic, the SWAC football and basketball championships, and the MLB Civil Rights banquet and game which featured NFL icon Jim Brown, music industry pioneer Berry Gordy and ‘Good Morning Americas’ anchor Robin Roberts. Toler is pleased that students get to work hands-on in the media industry. “Most of these students will surpass

any entry-level college freshman who pursues this industry as a major,” Toler said. “As high school students working on real-world assignments with the Defender, these students are working in the industry where college students aren’t even allowed to obtain these experiences. “That exposure will prove invaluable going forward. You really can’t put a price on it. We’re just elated that Max and the Defender thought enough of what we’re trying to do with our program to give us this unique opportunity.” The students who

Ware marks anniversary of historic Heisman win By MAX EDISON Defender

T

Twenty-five years ago, UH’s Ware became the first Black quarterback to win the coveted Heisman Trophy.

he 80th Heisman Trophy, given to the most outstanding college football player of the year, was recently awarded to Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota. This year also marks a historic milestone for the award with local significance. It is the 25th anniversary of the University of Houston’s Andre Ware winning the trophy and becoming the first AfricanAmerican quarterback to receive the award. The recipient of the award in 1989, Ware is the only Cougar to ever win the Heisman. Ware’s numbers that season – his junior year – were simply jaw-dropping. He threw for 4,699 yards, 44 touchdowns and set 26 NCAA records. “It really doesn’t seem like 25 years,” said Ware, a native of Dickinson. “It’s funny, you get caught up in life, just working, doing what you do every day and before you know it you’re at this milestone.” Ware played professionally for the Detroit Lions (1990-93) and Los Angeles Raiders (1994), as well as for three Canadian Football League teams. He is currently a college football analyst for ESPN and the SEC Network, and an announcer for the Texans Radio Network. Looking at the early athletic profile of Ware, one would never have imagined he would evolve into a high-powered, prolific passer or that he would be a quarterback at all. “I was determined to play the position,” Ware recalled. “I actually had a JV coach tell me they’d switch me to defensive back in college. At that time [there were doubts] that African-Americans could successfully play the position.” Ware was recruited to UH by legendary head coach Bill Yeoman, the architect of the veer triple option offense. The veer QB skillset emphasized deft ball handling and expert running skills, which fit Ware like a glove. A one-year stint at Alvin Community College (1986) brought about a world of change for Ware when he hit the UH campus in 1987. Yeoman and the veer were out; Jack Pardee and the pass-happy run-and-

shoot were in. There would be more adversity. The Cougars finished 4-6-1 in ’87, with Ware playing in 5 games before a broken left arm sidelined him. Ware persevered and began to master the offense. In 1988 with Ware under center, the Cougars finished 9-3 and earned an Aloha Bowl appearance. The stage was set for 1989, but there was one more slap in the face. The Cougars were placed on probation, which meant no postseason bowl games and no TV appearances – not the type of backdrop that gives rise to a Heisman Trophy campaign. “The Heisman was never in the thought process when the season began,” Ware said. “My number one goal was always to show that I could master the position. We were on probation which meant no bowl game and everything else that went with it. “That meant every game was a big game for us. Even as the numbers started to pile up and there began to be a little bit of a Heisman buzz, I wanted to stay

focused on winning. “We became a very confident bunch. We didn’t think anyone could stop us, but us. I knew I was playing at a high level. I never thought it was Heisman good.” The Heisman voters believed he was that good despite the fact that the Cougars were on probation. In the process he made history, and was honored to become the first African-American quarterback to win the coveted award. “That’s a distinction that I’m extremely proud of,” Ware said. “Oddly enough there was not a lot of talk about that aspect as the Heisman talk started to swell during the season, but I knew. I have a great sense of pride in the fact that I was first. “I’ve always tried to handle myself with a level of character that sets a good example or standard. Some of the [controversy surrounding last year’s winner] Jameis Winston for instance concerns me because it shows a lack of respect for what being that guy in that position represents.”

Cougars going with Herman Multiple sources have revealed that current Ohio State offensive coordinator Tom Herman will be hired as the next University of Cougar head football coach, succeeding Tony Levine. Herman has been quarterbacks coach and play-caller for Buckeye squads that have gone 36-3 the past three seasons. The Buckeyes rank fifth in the nation in yards per play this season and finished fifth in yards per play last season. Herman has Texas roots having coached four years at Sam Houston State (2001-04), serving as receivers coach and special team’s coordinator. He also spent two years at Texas State (2005-06) and two years at Rice (2007-08) as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
