Steele drops out of RNC race, Priebus elected new chair Special to the NNPA from the AFRO-American Newspapers

Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Michael Steele gave up his reelection bid last week, after it became apparent that he did not have enough votes to win another stint at the forefront of the GOP. Wisconsin GOP Chairman Reince Priebus won with 97 votes over second-place finisher Saul Anuzis. After a fourth round of voting, Steele watched his numbers decline for a third consecutive time and decided to throw his support behind Maria Cino. Steele gave a short speech when he stepped aside, saying that now was the time for a new direction. “Two years, we’ve had a good time. We’ve done a

HISD’s Board of Education recently unanimously elected her to a one-year term. Elected to the Board in 2007, Harris represents District IV, which includes much of south Houston. As president, Harris said she is committed to representing all HISD children. A Houston native, Harris has a petroleum engineering degree from Texas A&M University and has worked in the oil indus-

initiatives aimed at making HISD the best school district in America. Those initiatives include the creation of HISD’s Strategic Direction and the ambitious Apollo 20 program aimed at transforming struggling schools. Meyers thanked his Board of Education colleagues, HISD teachers and administrators for their hard work on behalf of children. “It is because of you that HISD has a record number of schools ranked on Newsweek’s list of America’s best high schools, that our students are taking more AP exams than ever before and that five schools are National Blue Ribbon Award winners,” Meyers said. “These accomplishments are possible because of your tireless efforts and the contributions you make as a member of TEAM HISD.” Other 2011 board officers named Thursday are: First Vice President Manuel Rodriguez Jr., Second Vice President Anna Eastman, Secretary Carol Mims Galloway, and Assistant Secretary Michael Lunceford.

Their daughter is an HISD student. “I’m very honored that my colleagues have entrusted me with this huge responsibility,” Harris said. “Our goal is to meet the needs of every child, family and community in the Houston area. Furthermore, he [Priebus] will be horrible in the media,” Jackson continued. “He’s not a great public

By Max Edison Don’t look now but coach Tony Harvey’s Men’s basketball team has stormed out of the gate as SWAC competition heats up. The Tiger’s are playing outstanding basketball, opening the conference schedule on the road and Coach Harvey attributes much of the success to the team buying in to what he and his coaching staff are trying to convey. “The guys have Photos courtesy of the Texans bought in, they’ve #1 Right guard Antoine Caldwell, above, (college photo) and left tackle #76 allowed me to be the Duane Brown, below are key components of the Texan new rushing attack. chief and they be the Indians,” HarPhotos courtesy of the Texans Photos courtesy of the Texans vey “There’s #1shared. The pre-conference schedule has been tough and we’ve played some very good teams,” he shared. “One thing I can say is our guys competed extremely hard in all of those games and those games were close, Kentucky transfer Kevin Galloway (13) leads the Tiger attack .

April and May. The state championships are May 21-22 at the University of Houston. FEB. 2 NATIONAL SIGNING DAY Dulles High School two-sport star Sheroid Evans has had his heart set on attending the University of Texas since he was a sophomore. It didn’t hurt that Pearland High School graduate and current Texas running back and track athlete Foswhitt Whittaker, a summer track teammate of Evans from an early age, has sold him with his Longhorns experience. Even with a recent coaching upheaval under head coach Mack Brown, Evans says he still intends to commit to UT on Feb. 2. The assistant coach that meant the most to Evans was defensive backs coach Duane Akina and he’s still on the staff. Evans wants to play either cornerback or safety on the college level Evans said he would only consider schools that would allow him to play football and run track. The senior won state University Interscholastic League (U.I.L.) gold medals in the 100- and 200-meter dashes in Austin last May.

Traditional strategies will be combined with novel and innovative approaches to significantly advance progress in education and youth development, voter registration, economic development, veterans affairs and several other critical areas of focus for the NAACP. In the area of education for example, Douglas, Reynolds and the Executive Committee are already assertively on board the effort to insure that Willow Ridge High School remains open and regains it prior prominence and stability with proper support from the Fort Bend School District. Douglas adds, “Young visionary ambassadors and champions who can actually effectively garner the attention and responsiveness of the younger generation - athletes, artists, rappers, entertainers, educators, elected officials - will be called

upon to assure that all not only have the opportunity to contribute productively to advancement and progress, but also have the desire and inspiration to do so. We welcome and applaud Rapper Trae tha Truth, as well as his Community Outreach Director Tiffany Cofield, who have already committed to assist with new initiatives like “17 and Counting,” which will engage and increase the civic education and voter registration/participation of young people ages 17-24, as well as voter reenfranchisement and reentry of former felons, a national NAACP initiative. Increasing activity across all critical committees of the NAACP will be an immediate focus. To facilitate memberships, contributions, and volunteerism, our Branch is launching its new website in January, www.naacpmocity.org.
