Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Michael Steele gave up his reelection bid last week, after it became apparent that he did not have enough votes to win another stint at the forefront of the GOP. Wisconsin GOP Chairman Reince Priebus won with 97 votes over second-place finisher Saul Anuzis.

After a fourth round of voting, Steele watched his numbers decline for a third consecutive time and decided to throw his support behind Maria Cino. Steele gave a short speech when he stepped aside, saying that now was the time for a new direction.

HISD Trustee Paula Harris, whose district includes Yates, said she is excited and optimistic about its new leader. “The community was extremely involved in the principal selection process at Yates and I know they will continue to be involved and work with him and his staff to create an environment for academic excellence.”

Harris has other reasons to be excited as well. HISD’s Board of Education recently unanimously elected her to a one-year term. Elected to the Board in 2007, Harris represents District IV, which includes much of south Houston. As president, Harris said she is committed to representing all HISD children.

A Houston native, Harris has a petroleum engineering degree from Texas A&M University and has worked in the oil indus-

She has been nominated for a Greater Houston Women’s Chamber of Commerce Role Model Award, which will be handed out later this month.

Harris and her husband Dwayne are the owners of DPM Investments. Their daughter is an HISD student.

“I’m very honored that my colleagues have entrusted me with this huge responsibility,” Harris said. “Our goal is to meet the needs of every child, family and community in the Houston area. We’ll continue working tirelessly to put together strategic plans to bring our schools to an even higher level.”

JUNIOR HIGH 7-ON-7 MEETING SET The State Junior High 7-on-7 Volunteer Coaches Meeting convenes Feb. 19 at Houston Christian High School.

Volunteer coaches will have access to important information for the upcoming 2011 season, including the new tournament schedule, state guidelines and registration for sixththrough eighth-grade teams.

There will also be a brief clinic with the Texas High School Football Coaches Association. The meeting will run from 10-11:30 a.m. at Houston Christian’s athletic field house located at 2700 West Sam Houston Parkway North.

The season kicks off with the first citywide Houston Junior High 7-on-7 Showcase.

It didn’t hurt that Pearland High School graduate and current Texas running back and track athlete Foswhitt Whittaker, a summer track teammate of Evans from an early age, has sold him with his Longhorns experience.

Even with a recent coaching upheaval under head coach Mack Brown, Evans says he still intends to commit to UT on Feb. 2.

The assistant coach that meant the most to Evans was defensive backs coach Duane Akina and he’s still on the staff. Evans wants to play either cornerback or safety on the college level Evans said he would only consider schools that would allow him to play football and run track. The senior won state University Interscholastic League (U.I.L.) gold medals in the 100- and 200-meter dashes in Austin last May.
