as the news was still breaking and all facts were not known. Amidst offering his condolences and urging Americans to unite and pray for the families of those injured or killed, he promised to “get to the bottom” of what happened. “I’ve spoken to Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer and offered the full resources of the federal government. A suspect is currently in custody, but we don’t yet know what provoked this unspeakable act,” Obama said. “A comprehensive investigation is currently underway, and at my direction, [FBI] Director Bob Mueller is en route to Arizona to help coordinate these efforts. I’ve also spoken to the Democratic and Republican leaders in the House.” Many across the nation have come to their own conclusions based on the evidence of hate speech, vehe-
ment aggression toward Obama, the nation’s first Black president, and outright threats of violence or violent undertones coming from associates of right wing Republican political groups; including the so-called Tea Partiers. Among the most notable is the use of gun cross-hairs to illustrate political districts targeted by former Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin. The rhetoric started and escalated to peak level after the election of President Obama. Simultaneously, threats of violence against him hit record levels, surpassing any president in recent history. The incident, which has been referred to repeatedly as a “national tragedy,” dashed cold water on a Republican agenda, which this week was
to immediately repeal what they called “Obama Care,” the Obama’s historic health care bill passed and signed into law last March. House Speaker Boehner, awaiting this week’s attempted repeal of health care, called for a reprieve on all political moves. “An attack on one who serves is an attack on all who serves,” he said on the program. “No act, no matter how heinous, must be allowed to stop us from our duty.” Meanwhile, at the CBC swearing in Jan. 5, four days before Saturday’s shooting, Cleaver declared to move forward with the Black agenda of the CBC. “Are we relevant? The answer is yes. The Congressional Black Caucus will be relevant as long as we
continue to have work to do,” he said. “As long as the rich get richer and the poor get poorer, we are relevant. As long as our communities suffer a depression while the rest of America experiences a recession—we are relevant. As long as the first recommendations presented by our Caucus to President Nixon in March of 1971 have some relevancy to the state of our union, we are relevant. He continued, “As millions continually call out to ‘take their country back’, the Caucus stands ready to continue our work in creating a nation for all Americans, Black, White, rich, poor, old, young, and immigrants alike – A nation inclusive of all of God’s children. It is not your country it’s all of ours. We have work to do.”
Heights.” I use life experiences of situations I have been through to bring my roles to life. I think a person can have many different ways to express their personality depending on the situation they are dealing with at that moment. Also, I never want to be a one-dimensional actress who portrays the same lifestyle in all her roles because I love being versatile. In the film “A Cinderella Story” I played a Valley Girl, but then in “Akeelah and the Bee” I was a single-mom from the city. I studied theater at Columbia College and we were trained to study and to portray all different types of characters and personalities. KW: What’s it like going from “Lincoln Heights,” a dramatic series, to a sitcom? What challenges did you face in portraying a DMV Employee? EH: I really love to do comedy and drama regardless if I ‘m in a stage play or in a TV Series. I enjoy all genres of programming. As a matter of fact, when I was doing the pilot for “Let’s Stay Together,” I was also filming the season finale of the CBS-TV series “Cold Case” in which I was being shot and killed during the episode. I love both working in emotional stories and in stories that make people laugh. KW: What message do you think people will take away from “Let’s Stay Together?” EH: The message I hope everyone will take from watching Let’s Stay Together is that we need to stick with each other in the good times and the bad times, and to love each other and truly care about one another in our relationships. There is a saying that I think is so true: “United We Stand, Divided We Fall.”
KW: Is there any question no one ever asks you, that you wish someone would? EH: I usually have to bring up the fact that I love being involved in my community, volunteering or donating. Recently, I formed The Erica Hubbard Foundation and my charity work is so important to my life. I really encourage everyone to get involved with any charity and please give back to your community. KW: : Are you ever afraid? EH: Yes, I am afraid at times about our nature and the world we live in, dealing with Global Warm-
ing. This year I have seen and heard stories of tragedy that relate to our climate change. Although it is not good to live in worry, I am concerned about Global Warming and how it is affecting our Earth. KW: The Columbus Short question: Are you happy? EH: Yes, the majority of the time I am happy, because I woke me up to bring cheer to someone that day. I love joking around and making people smile as well as laugh. Laughter is medicine for our souls. Life is precious and short so we all should live in joy as much as we can. KW: What is your guiltiest pleasure? EH: My guiltiest pleasure would be any kind of sweets either candy, cookies, pies or cakes. KW: When you look in the mirror, what do you see? EH: When I look in the mirror, I see God’s love! KW: If you could have one wish instantly granted, what would that be for? EH: My one wish, if I could have it granted instantly is that there would be world peace with everyone forever! KW: Why do you love doing what you do? EH: I love inspiring everyone to be successful and encouraging people to keep dreaming toward their success. KW: How can your fans help you? EH: My fans can help me by writing letters to me, by watching my TV series or movies, by visiting me at Facebook or Twitter to say hello. I truly love the support from fans! KW: Do you have any regrets? EH: I try not to focus on regrets or ponder on them because it drains your positive energy. KW: Do you think that the success
you’ve achieved in your career is because of you, because of a higher power, or because of a mixture of both? EH: Most definitely I believe the result of my success I have achieved is from a Higher Power. I know being obedient to God and Him using me to make a difference in my community is why I am successful. KW: What has been the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome? EH: The biggest obstacle that I had to overcome is being on unemployment and finding the willpower to put in the work to make a great salary by hard work and dedication. KW: How do you get through the tough times? EH: I pray and meditate a lot to get through tough times. KW: price are you willing to pay for a cause that is bigger than your own self interest? EH:I am willing to keep breaking Hollywood barriers to show my community to prove the point that any one of you can be successful with years of perseverance through difficulties and determination. I encourage everyone to be strong no matter what your situation is and remember as the saying goes, “Success is a journey, not a destination.” KW: What advice do you have for anyone who wants to follow in your footsteps? EH: The advice I give anyone following my footsteps is get advice and support from a mentor who is a working professional in the entertainment industry. KW: How do you want to be remembered? What do you want your legacy to be, and where are you in relation to that at this point in your life? EH: I want my legacy to be remembered as someone that cared about by their community through my charity involvement as well as my work onscreen, entertaining the masses. KW: Thanks again for the time, Erica, and best of luck with the new show. EH: Thank you, Kam, and Happy New Year!

When it comes to your child, one size does not fit all Would you see a surgeon if you had the flu? Would you see a cardiologist for your foot problem? The answer to these two questions is most likely “no.” Yet, every day parents are willing to have their child’s x-rays, MRIs, CT scans and ultrasounds interpreted and performed by a radiologist who does not specialize in children. Children are not just “little adults,” they need care that is specialized for them. When a child needs an imaging exam or procedure, parents should do their research and take them to a pediatric radiologist. Pediatric radiologists are experts in: • Selecting the optimal imaging procedure for your child • Establishing the best techniques to keep radiation dose at a minimum (based on size and weight)
Vitamin D Continued from page 7 However, evidence of the benefits of high doses of vitamin D supplementation in children is very limited. There is a risk that too much vitamin D could be toxic for children. The new guidelines say that the maximum safe amount of vitamin D intake for infants is 1,000 IU per day going up to 4,000 IU per day in children 9 years of age or more. Do not give higher doses of vitamin D to children without the advice of a physician who is monitoring the safety of these doses. *Dr. Stephen Abrams is a well-respected expert in neonatology and nutrition and participated in the development of these national guidelines.
• Understanding diseases and conditions that are specific to children “Pediatric radiologists are trained to understand the specific and unique needs of children, their parents and their pediatricians,” said Dr. George Bisset, chief of Pediatric Radiology at Texas Children’s Hospital. “At Texas Children’s Hospital, all of our radiologists are fully trained in pediatric radiology, and all of our efforts are directed at caring for children.” These individuals have at least one year of extra training geared toward providing a detailed knowledge of illnesses and conditions that are specific to infants, children and adolescents. So, before you take your child to any facility for an imaging examination, make sure that you are taking them to someone who specializes in children.
Children should be taken to a pediatric radiologist for their imaging procedures.

AIDS advocate Dena Gray, with the St. Hope Foundation attributes that to the desensitizing of America. “Thankfully, we have testing day in Feb., we have one in June. We have Week of Prayer in March. We have World Aids Day in Dec. After a while, people say to themselves, ‘oh, okay.’ But we have to go back and reiterate that there are 56-thousand new infections every year in the United States. In a Jan. 27 meeting at the school, State Rep. Jim Tucker (RAlgiers), a UNO alum, said the move would be positive and would allow the University of New Orleans to move out of the shadow of its big brother, Louisiana State University. “If we can get out of the LSU System, the sky will be the limit as far as going forward is concerned,” Tucker told the Times-Picayune. “LSU has held UNO back way too long. “A benefit of getting away from LSU is a greater opportunity to expand an
say young people, thirteen to 19 have the highest rate of HIV infections. We have to uncover another layer and look at this epidemic differently.” Some, like U.S. Rep. Al Green, would like to see the problem addressed on an ongoing basis. “We need more than just an HIV awareness month or week,” Green said. “It really has to be something we do every day. This problem is consuming the African American community. It is at a crisis point.” Several places are sponsoring free testing. Lezli Baskerville, president and CEO of the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education said that the Southern University of New Orleans plays an important part in the Southern University System, America’s only state HBCU system. The merger of the schools might hinder the success of the other HBCUs in the state. “Now is not the time to destroy, but rather to strengthen the Southern University System,” Baskerville said in a statement. “Governor Jindal should heed the wise counsel of his Higher Education Review Commission and support the strengthening of SUNO and the Southern University System.”
New Initiative to recruit 80,000 African American male teachers by 2015
The U.S. Education Department is hoping to recruit 80-thousand Black male teachers by 2015, and they’re taking their cause to one of the country’s top Black schools for men. Secretary Arne Duncan, joined by film director, producer, writer and actor Spike Lee, recently held a TEACH town hall meeting at Morehouse College to encourage students to choose teaching careers. The visit was part of a national teacher recruitment campaign launched by the Department earlier this year to celebrate and recruit more diverse, highly qualified teachers. Lee, an Atlanta native and graduate of Morehouse, shared his involvement in education and discussed why AfricanAmerican male teachers are needed in classrooms today. Following the town hall meeting with Secretary Duncan, MSNBC contributor Jeff Johnson announced the five-year national initiative to recruit, train, place and
develop 80-thousand African-American male teachers by 2015. Leaders from around the country will speak to a small group of young men about the need for them to become ambassadors for this movement. The “5 by 2015” task force,” led by Johnson, took seriously the call made by Secretary Duncan to recruit new teachers and decided to focus on African-American men. The Task Force consists of individuals and organizations that have been dedicated to teacher development and African American male mentorship. “With more than 1 million teachers expected to retire in the coming years, we have a historic opportunity to transform public education in America by calling on a new generation to join those already in the classroom,” Secretary Duncan said. “We are working with the broader education community to strengthen and elevate the entire teaching profession so that every teacher has the support and training they need to succeed. Education is the great equalizer
in America and the civil rights issue of our generation. If you care about promoting opportunity and reducing inequality, the classroom is the place to start.” The TEACH campaign encourages more minorities, especially males, to pursue careers in the classroom. Nationwide, more than 35 percent of public school students are African American or Hispanic, but less than 15 percent of teachers are Black or Latino. Less than two percent of our nation’s teachers are African-American males. To learn more about the TEACH campaign and to view public service announcements (PSAs) by celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey, Bill Gates, John Legend and others, visit www.teach.gov. The site provides information and resources for students and prospective teachers—including a new interactive “pathway to teaching” tool designed to help individuals chart their course to becoming a teacher. More than 7,000 teacher job listings also are posted on the site.
