By Max Edison

By Max Edison For approximately 500 former college football stars, the next few months will be the most important time in their potential professional lives. These are college players who are eligible for the 2011 NFL Draft. They have been diligently training since the beginning of the year to prepare themselves for the onslaught of professional evaluations, college pro days, combines and personal team workouts. The ultimate goal: to get drafted by an NFL team or at the very least sign as an undrafted free agent and pursue the life-long dream of being a professional athlete. The recently concluded NFL Combine gave players a firsthand look at the business of professional football, NFL style. The event was a “fun-filled” weekend of lifting, jumping, running and interviewing, with top NFL team representatives scrutinizing every move. Now that the combine is behind them and the NFL draft (April 28-30) almost two months away, players have resumed their daily workouts. Preparation begins for the Photos courtesy of the Texans next big event, pro days on their prospective #1 Right guard Antoine Caldwell, above, (college photo) and left tackle #76 college campuses. After missing the entire 2009 season due to knee surgery, Lemon bounced back to form during the 2010 season. He anchored the Cowboy defense at middle linebacker, leading the team to an Darvin Adams 11-2 record. He was named a first team All-Big 12 performer. Lemon’s combine’s experience was the start of his quest to achieve his dream of becoming an NFL player. “I think the combine for me was a good experience, Orie Lemon

ell, it’s only the first game of the season, but you have to be excited about the way the fightin’ Texans dismissed their old nemesis, the Indy Colts, last weekend at Reliant. Of course, there was a sellout crowd that was more than amped up for the kick-off of the NFL regular season, which longsuffering Texan fans hope will be their first visit to the playoffs. You also have to be enthused at the intensity level the team displayed, which quite frankly has been somewhat underwhelming on far too many occasions when the team takes the field. Normally, the outcome is very predictable, a big fat loss. No, this was a different group of fightin’ Texans. On defense, they came out with a surly attitude, led by his “royal highness of surliness,” safety Bernard Pollard.
