By Aswad Walker Defender A special meeting between Mayor Annise Parker, Councilman Mike Sullivan and a councilmember designated by Councilwoman Jolanda Jones will be the next step in deciding Jones’ punishment for actions the city’s Office of the Inspector General (OIG) determined were ethics violations.

Parker, a key party in the upcoming June 20 meeting, believes Jones’ violations need to be addressed, but believes they can be handled in-house.

For three of the six OIG findings, Jones could face misdemeanor criminal charges. In a June 2 memorandum to Mayor Parker, Inspector General Robert A. Doguim reported that Jones violated a city ethics ordinance and the mayor’s executive order on internal investigations three times each.

The activities, according to the probe, involve the improper use of city resources and personnel as well as Jones’ lack of cooperation and truthfulness with the OIG. Jones was investigated by the OIG after Sullivan filed an official complaint regarding Jones’ distribution of “Know Your Rights With the Police” cards during a community meeting held in response to the beating of an unarmed 15-year-old burglary suspect by a group of Houston police officers.

The cards included phone numbers to her council office and law office.

Jones said she has distributed a version of the card since 2007, before her election. Still, the inspector general’s investigators found violations beyond the handout and determined that the councilwoman has used employees on city time to notarize documents for her law practice, fax legal papers and drive her to court hearings.

Parker concedes that mistakes

were made by Jones, but does not believe they were made with willful intent to abuse her position as an elected official.

“There’s always some de minimis use of company equipment for personal reasons no matter your job. Your kids call you on the company phone. You receive an email from a friend or family member and respond,” said Parker.

“But as public officials we’re

under extreme scrutiny regarding these issues. Our emails, phone logs and visitor logs are always being requested by those who want to ensure our time is spent properly.

“Regarding Councilmember Jones, there was an official request to investigate, so the city had to comply,” said Parker.

“There have been four OIG investigations and three have ended with no findings. According to the report from the OIG, this latest investigation resulted in six findings.”

Parker also said, “The investigation showed that there was not a deliberate attempt on the part of Councilmember Jones to use her office for

personal gain. Thus, this matter can be handled within city government, either through the City Council process or the Municipal Courts.

“The next step in this process is a meeting between myself, Councilmember Sullivan who filed the official complaint, and a councilmember representing Councilmember Jones. It will be our responsibility to come to a meeting of the minds on how best to resolve this matter,” Parker said.

Jones made an official statement in response to the OIG. “I have had an opportunity to review the OIG report and I am committed to working within the city’s new process to bring this to a conclusion. I am confident that when all of the facts come to light, I will have acted within the acceptable standards of conduct,” she stated.

“I have a long track record of speaking for people who have no voice and I will not let this process distract me from continuing to serve as that voice for the people of Houston.

This city faces significant challenges including a major budget crisis, furloughs, layoffs and unresolved and unsustainable pension issues. I remain fully focused on working with the Mayor and my fellow council members to solve these crises,” stated Jones.

Sullivan also addressed what’s next.

“I have not seen all the evidence yet,” he said. “I am troubled by what I’ve seen in the Office of Inspector General report that was released last week.

There’s no doubt those are alarming findings and I’m interested in learning more about them. That’s what this process will enable us to do.”

As for the City Council, it has the option to reprimand, censure or impeach Jones.

Law enforcement cracking down on drunk drivers Local law enforcement officials will begin a crackdown on drunken driving now through the Fourth of July weekend holiday. Houston police and 23 other agencies from Harris, Montgomery and Fort Bend counties will take part in the effort in what has been described as an unprecedented initiative to reduce accidents and fatalities. Harris County leads the nation in alcohol-related fatalities. In Houston, more than 50 percent of fatal accidents were as a direct result of drunken driving.

Perry criticizes Obama at L.A. anti-abortion rally Texas Gov. Rick Perry, a potential 2012 presidential candidate, accused the Obama administration of transforming abortion into a U.S. export and breaking faith with the nation’s founding principles by supporting taxpayerfunded embryonic stem cell research. The conservative Republican has long been at odds with President Barack Obama’s stand on reproductive rights and stem cell research, but his remarks at an anti-abortion rally amounted to a political introduction to a mostly Hispanic crowd of about 5,000 at a downtown arena. The governor had dismissed talk that he would seek the GOP nomination next year, but he re-ignited speculation with an off-the-cuff remark. He said the direction of stem cell research under the Obama administration was “turning the remains of unborn children into nothing more than raw material.”

Demanding

Toyota accountability

WASHINGTON D.C. – Toyota Motor Sales USA executives have angered National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) Chairman Danny Bakewell Sr. and America’s preeminent Black newspaper publishers after the troubled carmaker backed out of a multi-million dollar advertising campaign targeting Black consumers.

In a letter to Bakewell and the NNPA, Toyota executives said that Black consumers of Toyota products receive their advertising message from a number of media channels, which include mainstream media, thus implying that advertising in the Black newspapers was unnecessary.

This decision comes after months of meetings between Toyota executives and the NNPA, a network of 200 Black publishers which represents over 19.8 million weekly readers, approximately half of America’s Black population.

“This is disappointing and intolerable behavior from a company who earned $2.2 billion from Black consumers last year and who was all too eager to send us their press releases asking us to write stories and editorials to influence Blacks to remain loyal in their time of trouble,” said Bakewell.

The issue first surfaced with Toyota’s unwillingness to run “Thank you” ads in Black newspapers. This was after Toyota spent millions advertising in white newspapers after last year’s safety recall.

“Black people stood by Toyota during their time of crisis to the tune of $2.2 billion,” said Bakewell. “Where is the ‘thank you’ to Black consumers for their support and loyalty to Toyota?

We just can’t stand by and let Toyota disrespect our people that way.”

NNPA publishers plan to run full page ads in their newspapers in response to what they feel is another example of Toyota sending a clear and direct message that Toyota disrespects, undervalues and takes the Black consumer for granted.

The ads will ask company president Akio Toyoda, to stop disrespecting and exploiting Black consumers – their customers.

Even though African-Americans contributed $2.2 billion to Toyota’s annual sales, this was

the second time that Black newspapers and consumers were not included in Toyota’s advertising campaign, the first being Toyota’s immediate response to its sticky gas pedal defect which resulted in full page newspaper ads in white newspapers in 25 cities.

Recently, Toyota’s vice-president of product communication, James Colon, left a phone message for Bakewell instructing him that he planned to reach out directly to NNPA’s publishers in an effort to bypass the organization’s leadership and speak directly to the organization’s member newspapers, an unprecedented move which clearly violates protocol.

“I wish him good luck but I don’t think that our publishers will break rank with me, after

all we’re smarter than that,” Bakewell said. “That’s what Toyota executives don’t give us credit for. We know all too well the history of the Willie Lynch syndrome to divide and conquer.”

Peggy Hunt, publisher of the Tri-County Sentry in California said that she was offended

by Colon’s suggestion that she break rank and not follow the leadership of Bakewell.

Currently, Toyota spends $1.6 billion annually advertising in America of which $20 million is spent in total in Black media, including radio, print, television, and digital advertising.

However, Bakewell pointed out that the media Toyota uses to reach Black people is not always Black-owned.

Bakewell says that he plans to call on the chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus to request hearings regarding Toyota’s relationship and business practices with the African-American community.

“And we will attempt to get a meeting with Toyota’s chairman…including going to Japan if necessary,” Bakewell said. “So if Jim Colon wants to play that game we can play it too.”

“Black newspapers are tried, true, and trusted when it comes to Black people in America,” Bakewell added. “We are the gatekeepers for reaching Black people.

Ford and GM understand that, as do other corporations like AT&T and Wells Fargo.

“When corporations want and need to reach the African-American consumer they see Black newspapers as the vehicle through which to reach Black people. Toyota needs to stop trivializing the power the of the Black press and understand that all we want is for Toyota to give Black people the same kind of respect and reciprocity that they give their white consumers.”

CBC chairman Emmanuel Cleaver presses for more jobs Congressional Black Caucus Chairman Emmanuel Cleaver II (D-Mo.) has vowed to fight for a jobs bill given the high unemployment rate among African Americans. Cleaver lays at least part of the blame for slow job growth on Republican Party insistence on cutting programs that help inner-city and minority communities. “After four months of controlling the House, the Republican Leadership has not considered or introduced one, single jobs bill,” Cleaver said in a statement. “Instead they continue to cut funding to critical programs that directly and negatively impact our country’s most vulnerable communities, costing hundreds of thousands of jobs.”

Black college student reveals role in Weiner scandal A Seattle college student came forward after receiving a lewd photo of Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) that has sparked a political firestorm. In an interview following Weiner’s admission to sending a racy photo of himself over Twitter, 21-year-old Genette Cordova detailed her story with the Seattle Times. Cordova said she was drawn by the congressman’s political style and started following him on Twitter. Later, Cordova said Weiner thanked her for her support and signed up to follow her on the social networking site. Then, one evening, she said she logged on to Twitter and saw that the congressman had sent her a revealing photo of himself in his underwear.

Malcolm X’s daughter pleads guilty to identity theft Malikah Shabazz, a daughter of slain civil rights leader Malcolm X, was recently released from jail after pleading guilty to stealing the identity of an elderly family friend and running up more than $55,000 in credit card bills. Shabazz, 46, was freed after entering the plea at a Queens courthouse. Her deal with prosecutors calls for five years probration and for her to pay back the money. Prosecutors said Shabazz used the personal information of Khaula Bakr to open credit card accounts in Bakr’s name.

SCORE, known as the “Counselors to America’s Small Business,” is a nonprofit association dedicated to entrepreneur education and the formation, growth and success of small business nationwide.

Houston’s SCORE chapter has been helping entrepreneurs and small business owners in the city for over 40 years.

Juneteenth: The story behind the story

W

ith the countless local events scheduled to honor Juneteenth, the state holiday commemorating the announcement of the abolition of slavery in Texas on June 19, 1865, historian Charles “Rock” Woodson continues his efforts to dispel myths about the celebration’s origins so that holiday revelers can gain even more appreciation for the significance of the day.

Most are familiar with the Juneteenth story.

Though President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1862, with an effective date of January 1, 1863, it had minimal immediate effect on the day-today lives on most enslaved persons, particularly those residing in the Confederate States of America of which Texas was a member.

On June 18, Union General Gordon Granger and 2,000 federal troops arrived in Galveston to take possession of the state and enforce the emancipation of its enslaved persons.

On June 19, 1865, historians state that while standing on the balcony of Galveston’s Ashton Villa, Granger read the contents of General Order No. 3 which stated in part, “The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor.”

Thus, as most have come to accept, Texas’ enslaved population lived and worked for over two years without knowledge of Lincoln’s freedom declaration. Juneteenth 2011, then, marks 146 years of freedom for Blacks in Texas.

However, for Woodson, critical details have been omitted from the telling of the original story, blurring the full significance of the holiday originally known as Freedom Day and Emancipation Day. “I want to dispel the myth that African Americans didn’t know about the Emancipation Proclamation,” said Woodson, who is also the

coordinator for Community Outreach for UH’s Office of Admissions.

“There were several slaves who were literate and who knew that in theory they were free, but realized they could do nothing about it. The troops that landed on June 19, 1865, with General Granger were members of the U.S. Colored Troops who basically went from plantation to plantation setting their people free.”

Woodson explained that during these plantation stops Granger would gather all enslaved individuals together, usually under a large tree, to read the Emancipation Proclamation to officially inform them of their rights, leaving it to the plantation owner to negotiate the freedom process, which could range from all former slaves being asked to leave the land, or staying and becoming paid workers.

Historians note that the enslaved were fascinated by the Black soldiers accompanying Granger. Woodson argues that they viewed the troops as a liberating army – one that was also responsible for the present national growth of Juneteenth as a holiday or observance celebrated by 39 states and the District of Columbia.

“The reason why Juneteenth has become a national phenomenon is because some African Americans know their history and some of their ancestors were the actual soldiers who participated in the freedom of African Americans in Texas.

Most of these soldiers were not from Texas, and though they stayed here for years while Texas was under federal law, most eventually went back home and shared the story. Once that story was told, it spread. That’s why there have been Juneteenth celebrations for years in my hometown of Buffalo, NY,” said Woodson.

“Once we understand that Black troops freed Black people, and that there were way more Black troops than those seen in the movie ‘Glory,’ then it’s something that we can all put our hands on no matter where we live in the U.S.,” added Woodson.

The list of states celebrating Juneteenth even includes places with small Black populations such as are Alaska, Idaho, Maine, New Mexico, Vermont and Wyoming. And even though Juneteenth became an official Texas state holiday in 1980, individuals across the country have celebrated it long before that point.

Houston part of Juneteenth history

ven though Juneteenth is now a national celebration, Freedmen’s Town can rightfully lay claim to being the place where Juneteenth began.”

In 1872, Freedmen’s town residents Jack Yates, Elias Dibble, Richard Allen and Richard Brock purchased 10 acres at Dowling and Elgin and dedicated Emancipation Park – the first public park in the state of Texas – as a place to hold their first freedom celebration, then informally called “Juneteenth.”

In 1973, C. Anderson Davis, founder of The National Emancipation Association, initiated Houston’s Juneteenth Parade which originally traveled up Dowling Street to Emancipation Park.

As an unofficial holiday, Juneteenth had highs and lows in terms of participation. However, Houston State Rep. Al Edwards in 1979 introduced a bill to make Juneteenth a state holiday, and the first state-approved celebration

took place the following year. Since then, for many Edwards, has become known as the father of the Juneteenth holiday.

In the mid-1990s what historians call the modern Juneteenth movement was born as Juneteenth leaders from across the country met in New Orleans to strategize on creating more national recognition for the holiday.

In 2000 at the annual Washington Juneteenth National Holiday Observance, a campaign to establish Juneteenth Independence Day as a National Day of Observance was established.

From humble Freedmen’s Town beginnings, an annual Congressional Juneteenth Reception, hosted by members of Congress at the U.S. Capitol, was established as a part of the Washington Juneteenth National Holiday Observance.

Juneteenth leaders were even behind the naming of June as Black Music Month. While still a senator, President Barack Obama worked, as others continue to work, to pass legislation in the U.S. congress to establish Juneteenth Independence Day a National Day of Observance.

“Juneteenth impacts those of us who claim African-American heritage. It’s our personal celebration because it freed us. I reference Frederick Douglass who in a famous speech made during our enslavement showed how the Fourth of July did not pertain to us,” said historian Charles “Rock” Woodson.

“Well, Juneteenth pertains to us. We should claim it so that we understand what our ancestors went through, just like those who remember the Holocaust, July 4th, and any other holiday that speaks to the memories of a people.”

Though the holiday as a celebration began locally, Woodson believes there are things participants can do wherever they reside.

“Participate in any parades and celebrations going on. Explain to your family members about Juneteenth. Get more information about at the library. Fly an American flag. These are things we can do to make sure that we all know that Juneteenth was the day that started the liberation of slaves in Texas.”

Award-winning filmmaker Keith Beauchamp found his calling while making his first documentary about Emmett Louis Till, the 14-year-old black boy who was abducted and tortured to death in August of 1955 for allegedly whistling at a white woman. The suspects subsequently

arrested for the lynching were all acquitted by an all-white jury.

KB: “The Injustice Files” is an

KB: The series is a three-part docu-series produced

Jada Pinkett Smith stars as Christina Hawthorne in TNT’s medical drama “HawthoRNe.” In the role of chief nursing officer at James River Hospital, Christina is forced to juggle the roles and subsequent relationships that are demanded of her as a professional, mother, friend and love interest.

Jada notably serves as executive producer on the show through Overbrook Entertainment following her initial foray into the role of executive producer of the “The Secret Life of Bees” starring Alicia Keys, Queen Latifah and Dakota Fanning.

The film captured hearts and went on to win two NAACP Image Awards along with two People’s Choice Awards. More recently, Jada produced the global blockbuster The Karate Kid” starring her son Jaden.

Beyond the medium of film and TV, Jada, together with her husband Will Smith and record industry mogul Jay-Z, produced the three-time Tony Award-winning musical “Fela’” which went on to enjoy a run in London at the National Theatre.

KW: Congratulations on your third season of HawthoRNe! How does it feel?

JPS: Oh, it feels good. It really feels good. We’re glad to be back, and I feel like we have an exciting season in store for all the “HawthoRNe” fans.

KW: What should fans be anticipating seeing on the show this season?

JPS: They should anticipate a highly-charged, dramatic, intense season with a lot of romance and adult issues. It’s going to be a helluva ride!

KW: Your character is marrying a white doctor this season. Are you concerned about the fans reaction?

Fantasia will play the role of Mahalia Jackson in the upcoming film “Mahalia” based on Jules Schwerin’s 1993 book, “Got to Tell It: Mahalia Jackson, Queen of Gospel.” According to the New York Post, the budget for the production is $23.9 million and the singer will earn a percentage of the film’s gross profits. Mahalia Jackson remains one of the most influential gospel singers in the world, and the preeminent voice of the genre for decades.

Her voice was the voice of the Civil Rights Movement and she was a well-respected woman. No word yet about when the film will begin production.

The long lost biological father of performer Kelly Rowland has done an interview with a London tabloid, saying he regrets the destructive behavior that cost him the chance to see his daughter grow up. challenging part about playing Christina Hawthorne?

JPS: Well, this year, the most challenging aspect of the role is the fact that Christina goes through an extreme trauma starting with the first episode. This whole season has actually been very emotional and highly dramatic, so I would say that, overall, it’s been a pretty difficult season to shoot.

KW: Will got to work with Jaden on screen in “The Pursuit of Happyness.” Would you like to work with Jaden or Willow?

JPS: I do work with them, just in a different capacity. It’s kind of hard for mommy to be on screen at this point. Now that Jaden’s getting a little older, his needs of me are different. There’s definitely a project that he and I have talked about doing together. But first, I just have to make sure that he doesn’t need so much of mommy off screen as well. He’s getting to that point, so I definitely anticipate doing stuff like that with both of them when they’re older.

KW: Do you worry about the effect of celebrity on your kids, given the trouble so many child stars have handling fame.

JPS: No, this is part of their lives. They’ve been members of a very high-profile family since they were born. That’s just what it is.

KW: How do you prioritize doing a TV series?

How does it fit into your family’s extremely full schedule?

JPS: Everybody has to work around mommy’s schedule when I’m working. Everybody has to stand down, basically. Willow and Jaden can’t really do anything outside of L.A. That’s just how we worked it out.

KW: Do you ever wish you could have your anonymity back?

JPS: Oh, I still have my anonymity whenever I want it. I have a great way of disappearing, and I’m able to do things people would never imagine. I’m often not recognized because I’m easy to hide if I change my hairstyle or put on a hat. I disappear very easily. That’s not hard for me to do.

KW: What’s the best thing about being a parent?

JPS: The love of a child is different from any other type of love on the planet. And being loved by your children is a love that is immense. I’m always so overwhelmed by how much my children love me. I think the best part of being a parent is feeling the love of a child.

KW: What are one or two pieces of advice that you’ve given your kids about being an actor?

JPS: I try to stay out of their way and kind of just let them discover things for themselves. Our job as parents is more to keep other people out of their way, so they’re free to discover what works for them on their own.

WALLIP-TSU students to represent U.S. in Germany

Lawson Institute for Peace and Prosperity Preparatory Academy-Texas Southern University (WALIPP-TSU) will serve as ambassadors for not only the city of Houston but the entire United States as they attend the World Culture Festival in Berlin, Germany, July 2-3.

WALIPP-TSU will send at least five middle school students to the international event designed to promote peace by celebrating diversity. School leaders hope to showcase for the world community the Third Ward institution that has successfully instilled in its students the values of peace and diversity.

Dr. Michon Benson, the school’s principal, also expects student participants to return from Berlin as even better equipped ambassadors of peace.

“At WALIPP students are taught the core value of responding, rather than reacting, with peace,” said Benson. “I want participants to see that these values we learn at school are what good people do all over the world.”

The Art of Living Foundation, Inc., a yoga education organization with representatives in 150 countries, will celebrate its 30th anniversary by hosting this event where organizers expect 70,000 attendees from around the world participating in yoga, meditation and diversity workshops.

Attendees will also enjoy a sampling of international music, food and dance.

To help participants prepare for Berlin, WALIPP-TSU students participated in the YES (Youth Empowerment Seminar) program offered by the International Association of Human Values, a program that teaches breathing techniques and yoga movements designed to reduce stress, promote health, and stimulate creative thinking and conflict resolution.

They have also been mentored by community members like Walter Hull, founder of GMALE (Global Minded Alliance for Leadership and Education).

“Traveling abroad helps tremendously with character formation,” said Hull. “It lets them know there’s a world out there that’s bigger than the zip code they live in.”

GMALE’s WALIPP-TSU in-school representative, Nsilo Reynolds, concurs with Hull.

“Many of our boys haven’t left the state, much less the country,” said Reynolds. “So I’m excited about taking them across the pond, and excited about what they will be able to do for their friends and their community.”

Student Eric Ferrell is looking forward to venturing overseas. “I’m excited because this will be my first plane trip, and I will get to see how Berlin is different from Houston,” said Ferrell.

WALIPP-TSU CEO Cheryl Lawson is excited as well – about the Festival and her school.

“WALIPP takes children who might have been lost, and moves them to learn one day at a time how to become effective learners,” said Lawson. “Our school and this trip provide participants with the opportunity to grow strong into adulthood and become living examples of peace and prosperity.”

A chance meeting between Lawson and long-time activist Fana Vincent set in motion the events leading to WALIPP’s participation in the Berlin festival. After meeting Lawson Vincent soon joined WALIPP-TSU as a math tutor, and shared with Benson the name of a friend, Mandar Apte, who Vincent knew had an inroad to funding teacher and student development programs focused on yoga, breathing, and the values of peace. From there came the opportunity for the students to travel abroad.

“Everything WALIPP does is about transformation: transforming young minds, communities and the world. This trip is the perfect example of that,” said Vincent, who is the co-coordinator of Houston’s World Culture Festival delegation along with Apte.

“Being raise in India I grew up on Gandhi’s principles of peace and nonviolence. And I read about MLK, Mother Theresa, and Gandhi but never met any of them. When I heard about WALIPP, a school founded on the principles of peace,

I had to meet the man behind it. And when I met Rev. Lawson I could feel the peace coming from him and knew this was a school I wanted to support,” said Apte.

Depending on the amount of monetary support the school garners from the greater Houston community, school leaders hope to send an even larger student delegation than the planned five along with chaperons.

“We need dollars and prayers and follow-up opportunities; to allow these participants once they return to speak

before churches, civic clubs, fraternities, so they can see the quality of student WALIPP produces,” said Lawson.

“We expect our students to come back as ambassadors of peace,” said Benson, who created a curriculum to make sure participants also take in the art, architecture and culture of Berlin while there. Students leave for Germany on June 30 and return to Houston on July 5.

Willis Wilson returns

to take top spot at Texas A&M Corpus Christi

F

ormer Rice head coach and hoops star Willis Wilson recently accepted the reins as head coach at Texas A&M Corpus Christi.

Wilson, who served as the Owls head coach for 16 years, arrives in Corpus after a threeyear stint as assistant head coach at Conference USA powerhouse Memphis.

For Wilson the opportunity to return to Texas, where he has spent the lion’s share of his professional career, was not very difficult.

“It’s exciting when you take over a new opportunity,” Wilson said. “Over the time that I’ve spent in my career coaching in Texas I was able to build a lot of positive relationships with high school coaches, summer youth coaches and other college coaches. That’s one of the reasons I came back.

“We really plan to recruit the state of Texas hard. I’m really hopeful that we can get some of the better players in the state and because of that, the program here at Texas A&M Corpus Christi will flourish.”

For Wilson the upside at A&M Corpus was too good to resist.

“First and foremost it’s the growth opportunity,” he said.

“From all the research I did and folks I talked to, this program has a very high ceiling. The fact that this program has had success and made it to the NCAA tournament, that lets you know it can be done. ”The fact that it’s a young program also lets you know there are a number of other things that haven’t been done. I feel like there are some things that a Willis Wilson and his coaching staff

can put in place that will allow our program to grow.”

Wilson also feels the environment in Corpus Christi is ripe for success.

“We’re in a community of about 300,000 people. We don’t have major league sports or a big university like Texas A&M, Texas, Rice or the University of Houston,” he said. “We are the only show in town, so I think we can build the type of program that fans can really embrace and support in a big way.

“Then we can replicate the success that mid-majors like a Butler, Gonzaga, Virginia Commonwealth, Davidson or George Mason have had. These schools have had a flash of it. We want to build things up to a point to where we’re doing it and doing it on a consistent basis.

The pieces are in place for us to do that.”

Wilson thinks that when it’s all said and done the allure of the city and the university will be too much for a student-athlete to resist.

“Corpus is a destination city.

We’ve got a beautiful school. The school campus is on an island on the beach. No other school in the country can match that. We’ve got great climate and all the elements that will allow us to grow and develop the interest in this basketball program.

“It’s a great campus and a great education. I think we’re going to develop into a big time program. If you’re a young person what more do you want?”

Coach Wilson believes his experience in the state will lead to success at A&M Corpus Christi.
