DEFIANCE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKETS Welcome From The President

Defiance Women’s Basketball 2013-14

Dear Fellow DC Fan: It is a real pleasure to welcome you to our campus and to today’s game. We at Defiance College are extremely proud of our wonderful athletic program and of the many other activities taking place at DC. The students whom you are watching today are an important part of our larger DC family, and they are among the approximately 1000 DC students who benefit from the dedication and assistance provided by our wonderful faculty, alumni, staff, administrators, and friends. Students at DC receive a wide range of distinctive experiences as we strive to offer our students the best of all worlds. At DC, students get the individualized benefits of a student-centered small college, but they also get a world of opportunities beyond. What does this mean? It means that our students start working with us before they even start their classes to put together distinctive Personal Success Plans, so that we can work with them to tailor their DC education and experiences to their own individual interests and goals. Throughout their four years at Defiance, our students benefit from a broad range of activities and experiences that are structured both to help them achieve their individual dreams and also to enable them to stand out in the job market and when applying to graduate schools. As part of that approach, we work with our students to help them develop their own Defiance College Resume. DC students also participate in a broad array of curricular and extra-curricular activities that give students distinctive hands-on experiences in their relevant fields. Just to name a few examples, we are proud of the work that our Criminal Justice students do in investigating cold cases for the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office in Detroit; our Education students get hands-on experience working in classrooms as early as their freshman year; Science students run and manage a 200+ acre wildlife preserve; through our Business Advantage Program, business, marketing, finance, sales, accounting and other students get hands-on experiences creating and running actual businesses. I could go on and on in terms of the different opportunities for our Communications, Sport Management, Pre-Med, Social Work, Graphic Design, and students in many other areas. We are all particularly proud of the great work that our students have done in running Project 701, a unique student-run, separately-legally-incorporated non-profit, in which DC students create, develop, run and manage service projects. From working with the two hospitals in town to run a free primary-care clinic to micro-finance lending; from providing computer repair services to packing backpacks full of food for needy elementary school students to take home on weekends, our DC students are gaining the tools to become entrepreneurial life-long learners, while also helping to address important local, regional, national, and international issues. In fact, Defiance College was recently named one of the top 20 schools in the country in terms of community service and engagement. DC students also get unique opportunities to travel both domestically and internationally. Under our DC Global Program, we actually guarantee an international opportunity in the junior or senior year to students in good standing who successfully complete our full four-year program. Over the past two years, DC students have traveled to Cambodia, Belize, Tanzania, Ghana, Spain, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, London, Paris, Vienna, Prague, Hungary, Slovakia, and more. Similarly, on a domestic level, DC students have traveled to New York City, Washington, D.C., Portland (OR), Pittsburgh, Detroit, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Kansas City, Des Moines, Denver, Selma, Memphis, Chicago, Nashville, Florida, South Carolina, New Mexico, and elsewhere. We are very proud of the opportunities we give our students to open their eyes, raise their sights, open their minds, and, in many cases, open their hearts as well. I hope you notice some of the recent improvements to our athletic facilities. Our George M. Smart Athletic Center (“The George”) began operation in February 2012, and we are thrilled with the opportunities our students have to use this 84,000 square foot facility, with its 200-meter indoor track, tennis courts, basketball courts, volleyball courts, batting cages, fitness center, weight room, and much more. The new turf on our football/lacrosse field was installed in December, 2012, and we also recently renovated our outdoor E. Stevens Dix Tennis Courts. The new bleachers and improved flooring in our Weaner Center has also enhanced the experience for our fans, and more improvements are underway across campus this year as well. I want to thank our entire team, including players, coaches, trainers, and staff for the great work they do every day and the numerous ways in which they go above and beyond on a regular basis. I also want to thank our alumni, the parents of our athletes and the various organizations, all of whom donate generously to our athletic programs. Members of the Defiance College Board of Trustees, the Purple and Gold Club, and the Alumni Varsity ‘D’ all contribute immeasurably as well, both as individuals and through their organizations. And the incomparable faculty at DC, together with extremely dedicated administrators and staff, all combine to make DC the special place that it is. We are pleased to have you as our guest at DC today, and I hope that you will return to campus frequently for both sporting events and the numerous cultural and academic events we are so proud to host. Go Jackets! Sincerely, Mark C. Gordon, President

DEFIANCE ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHY The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program serves as a window of opportunity for all prospective student-athletes to experience extra-curricular educational and physical activity that fits within the general mission of the college to develop the whole person. The student-athlete will be exposed to a variety of opportunities for personal growth in the areas of intellectual, emotional, spiritual, social and physical dimensions as it relates to each individual and their respective sport. The student-athlete, as a team member, will be involved in a learning community that will strive for excellence both on the field and in the classroom while maintaining a dignity of fair play and continued emphasis on positive sportsmanship. Jointly, the coaches and student-athletes will build an engaged environment that will accentuate the learning process not only within the competitive arena but also within the college campus and the community as a whole. An emphasis will be placed on the impact of participation and personal growth, rather than scoreboard success, in a balanced sports program where equitable sports opportunities will be available to both genders. The student-athletes of Defiance College choose to participate in the intercollegiate athletics program for a variety of reasons but none of which includes athletic related financial aid, or the promise of financial security through professional athletic stardom. Through participation in the intercollegiate athletics program, a student-athlete continues to compete for the love of sport, the thrill of competition and the fulfillment of countless intrinsic values. The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program strives to be an integral and cohesive part of the collegiate learning and living process, appropriately well suited to co-exist with the Defiance College mission statement‌to know, to lead, to serve and to understand.

DEFIANCE COLLEGE ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHY The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program serves as a window of opportunity for all prospective student-athletes to experience extra-curricular educational and physical activity that fits within the general mission of the college to develop the whole person. An emphasis will be placed on the impact of participation and personal growth,

16

rather than scoreboard success, in a balanced sports program where equitable sports opportunities will be available to both genders. The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program strives to be an integral and cohesive part of the collegiate learning and living process, appropriately well suited to co-exist with the Defiance College mission statement…to know, to lead, to serve and to understand.

DEFIANCE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKETS Position Preview Entering the second year of head coach Jessica (Cox) Morris’ tenure with the Purple and Gold, the Defiance College women’s basketball team is aiming for a postseason run. After finishing fourth in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference in 2012-13, DC has high expectations and hopes of a shot at the conference crown this season. The Yellow Jackets return three starters from a 201213 team that notched the most conference wins (11) since the 2003-04 campaign and put together the team’s first winning record in three seasons. Defiance is loaded with a strong upperclassmen presence, as it brings back five seniors and one junior, who have totaled 160 starts in their careers. With the veteran leadership and experience returning for the Jackets, DC looks to start strong in 2013-14 season and ride that momentum to an HCAC postseason run. Point Guards Catey Fix will start out the 2013-14 season running the point for the Yellow Jackets. The sophomore guard will replace graduated starting point guard Rachel Ciminillo, who led DC in assists a season ago. Fix shot 33 percent from the field last season.

Defiance Women’s Basketball 2013-14 and small forward positions. Neanan saw action in 18 games last season and shot nearly 30 percent from the behind the three point arc. She also shot a perfect 100 percent from the free-throw line last season. Small Forwards Megan Zachrich will start the 2012-13 campaign opposite wing of King as DC’s starting small forward. Zachrich is one of three returning starters, having started in all 26 games a season ago. She averaged 8.5 points per contest and the junior is also the top returning assist leader, with 67 last season. She is also one of the top defenders from last year’s squad, as she had 43 steals and nine blocks, both are tops among returners. Power Forwards Senior Ashley Birchmeier starts the season as the starting power forward for the Yellow Jackets. She played in 23 games and received one start a season ago. She averaged nearly four points and two rebounds a game last year, while averaging 12 minutes a game. Birchmeier shot 33 percent from the field as a junior. Fellow senior Kim Bingley will also provide a spark for the Yellow Jackets. Bingley saw action in 25 games last season, averaging nearly 15 minutes per contest. She shot 40 percent from the field, while averaging

a bench-leading 4.4 points last season. Bingley was also the leading rebounder off the bench for the Yellow Jackets, grabbing 4.6 per game. Centers Hannah Harshman will start in the center position this year for DC. The senior is one of three returning starters, with 25 starts a season ago. Harshman shot nearly 35 percent from the field last season. She is also the top returning rebounder for the Yellow Jackets averaging six per contest. Newcomers Sophomore transfer Sarah Thomas, who averaged 12 points and 10 rebounds her senior year in high school, will be playing her first season for the Yellow Jackets. Freshman Kelsey Tietje will look to get a lot of action in the paint this season. The 6-3 product of Patrick Henry High earned Second-Team All-Ohio and was selected District 7 and Northwest Ohio Athletic League Player of the Year during her senior campaign. Tietje comes from a long line of basketball talent, as her brothers Kevin and Kyle played with the Purple and Gold from 2009-12 and brother Kent is currently a junior on the Yellow Jackets squad. Freshman Erica Smay is another talented newcomer for DC this season. Smay was

named Second Team AllDistrict her senior season at Tinora High School. Freshmen Jimeca Jackson will play in the guard positions for the Yellow Jackets. Jackson is a product of Arsenal Technical out of Carmel, Ind. Ashley Williams is another incoming guard for the Yellow Jackets class of 2017. Williams was named an All-Conference Honorable Mention twice at Pandora-Gilboa. Keri Conine will play in the paint and on the wing for the Yellow Jackets. Alongside Williams, Conine was named to the honorable mention team for her conference in her senior year at Pandora-Gilboa. Catherine Tilman comes in as a very versatile player for the class of 2017. Tilman can play almost any position on the floor for the Yellow Jackets. The Miami, Fla. Native was a three-sport star at LaSalle High School. Chelsey Yoder is another newcomer that will play on both wings for the Yellow Jackets. The Ridgeville Corners, Ohio native was named to the All-Tournament first team at the National Christian School Athletic Association championships as a junior.

Shooting Guards Senior Erica King will start the season out in the two slot for DC this season. King averaged 13.3 points per game in 25 starts and is the top returning scorer for the Yellow Jackets. She shot a blistering 38 percent from three-point range (70 for 184) and led Defiance in that category. King also led the Purple and Gold in minutes played, with over 34 minutes played per contest. Senior Maggie Neanen is also a wing player that will see time at both the guard

JESSICA

‘Cox’ Morris

Head Coach • Second Season • Dubuque, 2005 419-783-2391• JCOX@DEFIANCE.EDU Jessica “Cox” Morris enters her second season as the head coach of the Yellow Jackets women’s basketball program, after a highly-successful first season. Coach Cox led DC to a 14-12 (11-7 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference) record, the best overall and conference records since the 2009-10 campaign. Over the course of the 2012-13 season, Cox-Morris guided the team to multiple achievements including an 8-3 home record, a six-game winning streak and a fourth-straight appearance in the HCAC tournament. Individually, Coach Cox helped grow former Jacket Kim Comden and senior Erica King into First-Team AllHCAC members last year, as well as keeping her team strong in the classroom by notching eight HCAC Academic All-Conference honorees. Before joining the Purple and Gold, Cox-Morris accumulated seven years of coaching experience. The Galena, Illinois native most recently served as the assistant coach at NCAA Division III Whitman College. The Missionaries went 31-21 from 2010-2012 with Coach Cox on the staff, including a 21-11 mark within the Northwest Conference. She helped Whitman improve its record in each of her two years with the squad, while overseeing the strength and conditioning and recruiting efforts of the program. Prior to moving to Walla Walla, Washington to join the WC coaching staff, Cox-Morris went 32-15 as the head coach at Waterford Mott High in Michigan. The Illinois native guided the Corsairs to a six-win improvement in her second year, saw the team win league and district championships and was a nominee for Oakland County Coach of the Year by the Basketball Coaches Association for Michigan. Coach Cox got her start on the bench as an assistant coach at Augustana College, while working as the coach of the junior varsity program at the D-III institution. Before jumping into the coaching ranks, Cox-Morris started every game of her record-setting, four-year career on the planks with the University of Dubuque. She was a captain of the team in each of her final two seasons and earned allconference honors as a senior. Coach Cox ended her standout Division III career with Dubuque as the program’s all-time leader with 247 made three-point shots and a 34.8-percent clip from beyond the arc. The sharpshooter also left with the school’s top free-throw percentage at a crisp 80.0 mark, ranked third with 298 assists and fourth with 1,328 points. Cox-Morris graduated from Dubuque in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in health, wellness and recreation and earned a minor in coaching. Cox-Morris is married to her husband, Tim, and the couple resides in Defiance.
