2014-15 DEFIANCE COLLEGE TRACK & FIELD MEDIA GUIDE

WELCOME FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Fellow DC Fan: It is a real pleasure to welcome you to our campus and to today’s game. We at Defiance College are extremely proud of our wonderful athletic program and of the many other activities taking place at DC. The students whom you are watching today are an important part of our larger DC family, and they are among the approximately 1000 DC students who benefit from the dedication and assistance provided by our wonderful faculty, alumni, staff, administrators, and friends. Students at DC receive a wide range of distinctive experiences as we strive to offer our students the best of all worlds. At DC, students get the individualized benefits of a student-centered small college, but they also get a world of opportunities beyond. What does this mean? It means that our students start working with us before they even start their classes to put together distinctive Personal Success Plans, so that we can work with them to tailor their DC education and experiences to their own individual interests and goals. Throughout their four years at Defianc, our students benefit from a broad range of activities and experiences that are structured both to help them achieve their individual dreams and also to enable them to stand out in the job market and when applying to graduate schools. As part of that approach, we work with our students to help them develop their own Defiance College Resume. DC students also participate in a broad array of curricular and extra-curricular activities that give students distinctive hands-on experiences in their relevant fields. Just to name a few examples, we are proud of the work that our Criminal Justice students do in investigating cold cases for Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office in Detroit; our Education students get hands-on experience working in classrooms as early as their freshman year; Science students run and manage a 200+ acre wildlife preserve; through our Business Advantage Program, business, marketing, finance, sales, accounting and other students get hands-on experiences creating and running actual businesses. I could go on and on in terms of the different opportunities our Communications, Sport Management, Pre-Med, Social Work, Graphic Design, and students in many other areas. We are all partucularly proud of the great work that our students have done running Project 701, a unique student-run, separately-legally-incorporated non-profit, in which DC students create, develop, run and manage service projects. From working with the two hospitals in town to run a free primarycare clinic to micro-finance lending; from providing computer repair services to packing backpacks full of food for needy elementary school students to take home on weekends, our DC students are gaining the tools to become entrepreneurial life-long learners, while also helping to address important local, regional, national, and international issues. In fact, Defiance College was recently named one of the top 20 schools in the country in terms of community service and engagement. DC students also get unique opportunities to travel both domestically and internationally. Under our DC Global Program, we actually guarantee an international opportunity in the junior and senior year to students in good standing who successfully complete our full four-year program. Over the past two years, DC students have traveled to Cambodia, Belize, Tanzania, Ghana, Spain, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, London, Paris, Vienna, Prague, Hungary, Slovakia, and more. Similarly, on a domestic level, DC students have traveled to New York City, Washington, D.C., Portland (OR), Pittsburgh, Detroit, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Kansas City, Des Moines, Denver, Selma, Memphis, Chicago, Nashville, Florida, South Carolina, New Mexico and elsewhere. We are very proud of the opportunities we give our students to open their eyes, raise their sights, open their minds, and , in many cases, open thier hearts as well. I hope you notice some of the recent improvements to our athletic facilities. Our George M. Smart Athletic Center (“the George”) began operation in February 2012, and we are thrilled with the opportunities our students have to use this 84,000 square foot facility, with its 200-meter indoor track, tennis courts, basketball courts, volleyball courts, batting cages, fitness center, weight room, and much more. The new turf on our football/lacrosse field was installed in December 2012, and we also recently renovated our outdoor E. Stevens Dix Tennis Courts. The new bleachers and improved flooring in our Weaner Center has also enhanced the experience for our fans, and more improvements are underway across campus this year as well. I want to thank our entire team, including players, coaches, trainers, and staff for the great work they do every day and the numerous ways in which they go above and beyond on a regular basis. I also want to thank our alumni, the parents of our athletes and the various organizations, all of whom donate generously to our athletic programs. Members of the Defiance College Board of Trustees, the Purple and Gold Club, and the Alumni Varsity ‘D’ all contribute immeasurably as well, both as individuals and through their organizations. And the incomparable fculty at DC, together with extremely dedicated administrators and staff, all combine to make DC the special place that it is. We are pleased to have you as our guest at DC today, and I hope that you will return to campus frequently for both sporting events and the numerous cultural and academic events we are proud to host. Go Jackets! Sincerely, Mark C. Gordon, President

DEFIANCE ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHY The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program serves as a window of opportunity for all prospective student-athletes to experience an extra-curricular educational and physical activity that fits within the general mission of the college to develop the whole person. The student-athlete will be exposed to a variety of opportunities for personal growth in the areas of intellectual, emotional, spiritual, social and physical dimensions as it relates to each individual and their respective sport. The student-athlete, as a team member, will be involved in a learning community that will strive for excellence both on the field and in the classroom while maintaining a dignity of fair play and continued emphasis on positive sportsmanship. Jointly, the coaches and student-athletes will build an engaged environment that will accentuate the learning process not only within the competitive arena but also within the college campus and the community as a whole. An emphasis will be placed on the impact of participation and personal growth, rather than scoreboard success, in a balanced sports program where equitable sports opportunities will be available to both genders. The student-athletes of Defiance College choose to participate in the intercollegiate athletics program for a variety of reasons but none of which includes athletic related financial aid or the promise of financial security through professional athletic stardom. Through participation in the intercollegiate athletics program, a student-athlete continues to compete for the love of sport, the thrill of competition and the fulfillment of countless intrinsic values. The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program strives to be an integral and cohesive part of the collegiate learning and living process, appropriately well suited to co-exist with the Defiance College mission statement…to know, to lead, to serve and to understand.

DEFIANCE COLLEGE ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHY The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program serves as a window of opportunity for all prospective student-athletes to experience an extra-curricular educational and physical activity that fits within the general mission of the college to develop the whole person. The student-athletes of Defiance College choose to participate in the intercollegiate athletics program for a variety of reasons but none of which includes athletic related financial aid, or the promise of financial security through professional athletic stardom.

JOHN

HARTPENCE

Head Coach • Eighth Season • Cortland (N.Y.) College ‘94 419-783-2369 • JHARTPENCE@DEFIANCE.EDU John Hartpence enters 2014-15 for his eighth season as the head coach of the Defiance College cross country and track and field programs, where he works primarily with athletes in the distance, hurdles, and field events. The 2012-13 campaign was solid, as Hartpence led his teams to strong finishes in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference during each sports season. In the fall, he guided the men’s cross country team to a fourth-place finish in conference, which was the best mark for the team since 2001 and also coached up two First-Team All-HCAC selections for the first time in program history. Then in indoor competition, Hartpence led the DC men and women to third and fourth in conference, respectively. Both sides accrued 16 new school records, three First-Team All-HCAC members and seven second-team selections. The teams also racked up three All-Ohio honorees and seven track or field athlete of the week honors. Finally, Hartpence came through with a solid outdoor track and field showing, as both the men’s and women’s squads finished third in the HCAC. They put together six all-conference athletes, three second teamers, three All-Ohio athletes and set six new Purple and Gold Records. However, Hartpence’s most outstanding accomplishment has come in his work with All-American Tom Postema over the past two years. The recently graduated Yellow Jacket thrower put together arguably the greatest indoor and outdoor track and field season in school history. Postema competed in the shot put and weight throw during the indoor competition and the hammer throw, discus and shot put in the outdoor campaign. Over those five events, the Defiance, Ohio native, set the school record in each and holds the conference record in all but the outdoor shot put. During his career, Postema was also a six-time All-Ohio Champion, HCAC Field Athlete of the Year during all four season he competed, a three-time Great Lakes Region Field Athlete of the Year and was twice selected as the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Div. III National Male Athlete of the Week. Finally, to conclude his extensive list of accolades, Hartpence coached up Postema to National Collegiate Athletic Association Div. III All-American status in four different events and was the Div. III National Champion in the Hammer Throw in May of 2013. Hartpence came to Defiance after serving as the head track and field coach at Dickinson College for seven years, where he guided the women’s team to six Centennial Collegiate Conference championships, and saw the men’s team earn five runner-up finishes. In addition to the teams’ success, Hartpence guided his Red Devils to 65 individual conference championships during his tenure at Dickinson, and was voted as the USTFCCAA Mid-East Women’s Indoor Coach of the Year in both 2002 and 2003. Hartpence earned his undergraduate degree in physical education from Cortland College, before completing a master’s of science degree in health and human performance from the University of Montana in 1996. He is certified as a Level II Track and Field Coach for throwing and jumping events.

MARCUS

MATYAS

Assistant Coach • Third Season • SUNY-Cortland ‘07 419-783-2335 • MMATYAS@DEFIANCE.EDU Marcus Matyas enters his third season at Defiance after joining the track and field program as the assistant coach for throws. He is also acting as the recruiting coordinator for the team. Coach Matyas worked closely with the throwers this past year. With the guidance of Matyas, the Yellow Jackets had a very strong season, especially Tom Postema. With the help of Matyas, Postema was able to set five different DC records. They were the outdoor hammer throw (65.80 m), outdoor discus (56.27 m), outdoor shot put (17.04 m), indoor shot out (16.99 m), and indoor weight throw (20.72 m). Postema won three All-American Awards for his effort his senior year. He also was name Regional and HCAC Field Athlete of the Year under Matyas. Matyas came to DC after spending two years at Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas. During his time there, he was the assistant coach to both the cross country and track and field programs. He performed multiple administrative duties, as well as focusing on

the recruitment of quality student-athletes who perform both in and out of the classroom. Those athletes had great success in his tenure at Hendrix. Over Matyas’s two years, the women’s throwers broke four school records, while the men’s throwers broke one record. The men’s cross country team also recorded its highest finishes in school history at the 2010 South/Southeast Regional Championships, along with the 2011 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships. Matyas’s greatest achievement during his seasons at Hendrix was the opportunity to coach an extremely talented female athlete in Elizabeth Krug. In her freshman year, Matyas coached Krug all the way to a seventh-place finish in the heptathlon at the 2011 NCAA Div. III Outdoor Track and Field Championships. He then continued working with Krug in her sophomore campaign, where she had continued success with a ninth-place finish at the 2012 Div. III Indoor Championships in the pentathlon, and then a sixth-place finish at the 2012 Div. III Outdoor Track and Field Championships. These performances earned Krug Div. III AllAmerican honors in back-to-back seasons. Prior to Matyas’s tenure at Hendrix College, he served as a graduate assistant at Jacksonville State University from 2007 to 2009, where he completed a master’s of public administration in athletic administration. He helped guide the Gamecock throwers to school records in five events, along with coaching one freshman athlete to second-place in the discus at the 2009 Ohio Valley Conference Championships. Matyas graduated from the State University of New York at Cortland in May of 2007 with a bachelor’s of science in kinesiology with a sport studies concentration. Over his four years at the school from 2003 to 2006, Matyas excelled in the field as a four-time conference champion in discus, along with a 2003 shot put champion in State University of New York Athletic Conference. In 2005 and 2006, he was named SUNY Track and Field MVP, as well as Discus All-American.
