2014 DEFIANCE COLLEGE FOOTBALL MEDIA GUIDE 12-Time Conference Champions • Four Undefeated Seasons • 54 All-Americans
WELCOME FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Fellow DC Fan: It is a real pleasure to welcome you to our campus and to today’s game. We at Defiance College are extremely proud of our wonderful athletic program and of the many other activities taking place at DC. The students whom you are watching today are an important part of our larger DC family, and they are among the approximately 1000 DC students who benefit from the dedication and assistance provided by our wonderful faculty, alumni, staff, administrators, and friends. Students at DC receive a wide range of distinctive experiences as we strive to offer our students the best of all worlds. At DC, students get the individualized benefits of a student-centered small college, but they also get a world of opportunities beyond. What does this mean? It means that our students start working with us before they even start their classes to put together distinctive Personal Success Plans, so that we can work with them to tailor their DC education and experiences to their own individual interests and goals. Throughout their four years at Defianc, our students benefit from a broad range of activities and experiences that are structured both to help them achieve their individual dreams and also to enable them to stand out in the job market and when applying to graduate schools. As part of that approach, we work with our students to help them develop their own Defiance College Resume. DC students also participate in a broad array of curricular and extra-curricular activities that give students distinctive hands-on experiences in their relevant fields. Just to name a few examples, we are proud of the work that our Criminal Justice students do in investigating cold cases for Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office in Detroit; our Education students get hands-on experience working in classrooms as early as their freshman year; Science students run and manage a 200+ acre wildlife preserve; through our Business Advantage Program, business, marketing, finance, sales, accounting and other students get hands-on experiences creating and running actual businesses. I could go on and on in terms of the different opportunities our Communications, Sport Management, Pre-Med, Social Work, Graphic Design, and students in many other areas. We are all partucularly proud of the great work that our students have done running Project 701, a unique student-run, separately-legally-incorporated non-profit, in which DC students create, develop, run and manage service projects. From working with the two hospitals in town to run a free primarycare clinic to micro-finance lending; from providing computer repair services to packing backpacks full of food for needy elementary school students to take home on weekends, our DC students are gaining the tools to become entrepreneurial life-long learners, while also helping to address important local, regional, national, and international issues. In fact, Defiance College was recently named one of the top 20 schools in the country in terms of community service and engagement. DC students also get unique opportunities to travel both domestically and internationally. Under our DC Global Program, we actually guarantee an international opportunity in the junior and senior year to students in good standing who successfully complete our full four-year program. Over the past two years, DC students have traveled to Cambodia, Belize, Tanzania, Ghana, Spain, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, London, Paris, Vienna, Prague, Hungary, Slovakia, and more. Similarly, on a domestic level, DC students have traveled to New York City, Washington, D.C., Portland (OR), Pittsburgh, Detroit, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Kansas City, Des Moines, Denver, Selma, Memphis, Chicago, Nashville, Florida, South Carolina, New Mexico and elsewhere. We are very proud of the opportunities we give our students to open their eyes, raise their sights, open their minds, and , in many cases, open thier hearts as well. I hope you notice some of the recent improvements to our athletic facilities. Our George M. Smart Athletic Center (“the George”) began operation in February 2012, and we are thrilled with the opportunities our students have to use this 84,000 square foot facility, with its 200-meter indoor track, tennis courts, basketball courts, volleyball courts, batting cages, fitness center, weight room, and much more. The new turf on our football/lacrosse field was installed in December 2012, and we also recently renovated our outdoor E. Stevens Dix Tennis Courts. The new bleachers and improved flooring in our Weaner Center has also enhanced the experience for our fans, and more improvements are underway across campus this year as well. I want to thank our entire team, including players, coaches, trainers, and staff for the great work they do every day and the numerous ways in which they go above and beyond on a regular basis. I also want to thank our alumni, the parents of our athletes and the various organizations, all of whom donate generously to our athletic programs. Members of the Defiance College Board of Trustees, the Purple and Gold Club, and the Alumni Varsity ‘D’ all contribute immeasurably as well, both as individuals and through their organizations. And the incomparable fculty at DC, together with extremely dedicated administrators and staff, all combine to make DC the special place that it is. We are pleased to have you as our guest at DC today, and I hope that you will return to campus frequently for both sporting events and the numerous cultural and academic events we are proud to host. Go Jackets! Sincerely, Mark C. Gordon, President

DEFIANCE ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHY The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program serves as a window of opportunity for all prospective student-athletes to experience an extra-curricular educational and physical activity that fits within the general mission of the college to develop the whole person. The student-athlete will be exposed to a variety of opportunities for personal growth in the areas of intellectual, emotional, spiritual, social and physical dimensions as it relates to each individual and their respective sport. The student-athlete, as a team member, will be involved in a learning community that will strive for excellence both on the field and in the classroom while maintaining a dignity of fair play and continued emphasis on positive sportsmanship. Jointly, the coaches and student-athletes will build an engaged environment that will accentuate the learning process not only within the competitive arena but also within the college campus and the community as a whole. An emphasis will be placed on the impact of participation and personal growth, rather than scoreboard success, in a balanced sports program where equitable sports opportunities will be available to both genders. The student-athletes of Defiance College choose to participate in the intercollegiate athletics program for a variety of reasons but none of which includes athletic related financial aid or the promise of financial security through professional athletic stardom. Through participation in the intercollegiate athletics program, a student-athlete continues to compete for the love of sport, the thrill of competition and the fulfillment of countless intrinsic values. The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program strives to be an integral and cohesive part of the collegiate learning and living process, appropriately well suited to co-exist with the Defiance College mission statement…to know, to lead, to serve and to understand.

DEFIANCE COLLEGE ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHY The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program serves as a window of opportunity for all prospective student-athletes to experience an extra-curricular educational and physical activity that fits within the general mission of the college to develop the whole person. The student-athletes of Defiance College choose to participate in the intercollegiate athletics program for a variety of reasons but none of which includes athletic related financial aid, or the promise of financial security through professional athletic stardom.

2014 DEFIANCE COLLEGE FOOTBALL MEDIA GUIDE 12-Time Conference Champions • Four Undefeated Seasons • 54 All-Americans
DEFIANCE, OHIO - The Defiance College football team welcomes back multiple players with starting experience in 2014, including 28 lettermen. The Yellow Jackets will rely on their upperclassmen and returning players to build upon last season and help advance the program to contend for a possible Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship. Last fall, Defiance ended the year with a 3-7 overall mark will four loses by a touchdown or less. The Yellow Jackets ended last season as one of the top offenses in the league finishing third in the HCAC in total offense averaging 347.5 yards per game. The Yellow Jackets also had one of the better ground attacks with 152.4 yards per game placing them third in the conference. DC will also be strong defensively following a season that saw the Jackets ranked nationally in several categories including: total defense (seventh) allowing an average of just 257.4 total yards of offense per game, rushing defense (sixth) giving up just 74.1 yards per game, tackles for loss (14th) with 89 and interceptions (T-15th) with 18.
ende the 2013 season with 275 yards in 65 attempts to go along with two TD. In two seasons as a varsity player, Burrell has rushed for 791 career yards and will need 209 yards to top 1,000. Also joining the rushing attack will be junior Daniel Collins (West Springfield, Va./West Springfield) and sophomore Cody Wilson (McComb). Collins rushed for 175 yards last sesaon in 68 attempts and had a team-best four TD. He also provided a threat as a receiver catching 15 passes for 221 yards (14.7 yards per catch) and two TD. Wilson added 90 yards (3.2 ypc.) in 28 attempts and finished the season as the team’s third-leading receiver with 19 catches for 276 yards (14.5 ypc.) and one TD.

He also carried the ball 106 times for 220 yards (2.1 yards per carry) and a pair of TD. RUNNING BACKS Coming into the 2014 season, the Defiance backfield will be led by senior Trevon Burrell (Auburn Hills, Mich./Avondale). Burrell
TIGHT ENDS The tight end position will have one lone returning player from last year going into the fall in sophomore Tom Woehnker (Kendallville, Ind./East Noble). Also lining up this season at the tight end position will be senior Garrett Teague (Webberville, Mich./ Webberville). Teague missed all of the 2013 campaign due to injury and will be moving to TE from the quarterback spot. WIDE RECEIVERS The wide receiver corps will look to replace graduated senior Brian Mircovich who earned second-team All-HCAC honors last season along with Defiance Co-Offensive Most Valuable Player Bryan Weaver, but will have to do so with a host of new faces. In addition to Burrell, Collins and Wilson providing targets for Larson out of the backfield, the only other true wideout making a return this season who saw playing time on the varsity squad a year ago will be sophomore Darius Harper (Jacksonville, Fla./Robert E. Lee).

Headlining the list of returning players will be the duo of senior Tanner Engle (Harrod/ Allen East) and junior Joe Niehaus (Grass Lake, Mich./Grass Lake). Engle started all nine games he played in last season, while Niehaus started all eight games played. Also look for sophomore Joey Rebottaro (Tecumseh, Mich./Tecumseh), seniors Ryne Rogers (Richland, Mich./Gull Lake) and Caleb Wagner (LaGrange/Keystone) to see consistent playing time. The Cleveland, Ohio native began his post as the 31st head coach in the history of the Defiance College football program on January 2, 2012. Sheehan joined the Yellow Jackets after spending the previous five seasons as the offensive coordinator at Thomas More, where he helped lead the Saints to President’s Athletic Conference Championships and a spot in the NCAA Division III Playoffs in each of his final four seasons with the program. Sheehan’s high-scoring option offenses at Thomas More helped the Saints set four single-season team offensive records during the 2009 and 2010 campaigns, while storming through each regular season with an unblemished record. The Saints scored 33.8 points per game in 2011, behind 199.7 rushing yards per outing and averaged 32.7 points per game from 2009 through 2011. During that time, Sheehan helped Thomas More to a 31-4 overall record that included a 19-1 league mark and a pair of NCAA Division III National Tournament victories. Sheehan’s contributions to the TMC program went far beyond running the offense, as he created the Thomas More Leadership Workshop to promote team unity and individual development within the Saints’ football program, led an overhaul of the recruiting and communication database and coordinated the program’s Relay for Life team for the American Cancer Society. Prior to his five-year stint guiding the offense from the sidelines at Thomas More, Sheehan served on staff at Hobart College as the wide receivers and strength coach. During his two years at Hobart, Sheehan implemented a new year-round strength and conditioning program and helped the Statesmen post a 17-4 record, en route to a pair of trips to the NCAA Playoffs. Sheehan also served on staff at Heidelberg University from 2003 through 2005, where he started his coaching career as the offensive coordinator for the junior varsity program and completed a master’s degree in education. The Cleveland, Ohio, native earned undergraduate degrees in psychology and business management in 2003 from Marietta College, while serving as a three-year starter at the tight end position with the Pioneers. Sheehan started on offense and defense and was a team captain for the squad during his senior season. Along with his experiences on the football field, Sheehan has contributed to X&O Labs Coaching Research and Manual of Football Drills and Skills, which were published in 2011 and has lectured at multiple football coaching clinics in the past several years. Sheehan is married to his wife, Mandy, and the couple resides in Defiance with their two children, Nolan and Liam..
