A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT....... Dear Fellow DC Fan: We at Defiance College are extremely proud of our wonderful athletic program and of the many other activities taking place at DC. The students whom you are watching today are an important part of our larger DC family, and they are among the approximately 1000 DC students who benefit from the dedication and assistance provided by our wonderful faculty, alumni, staff, administrators, and friends. Students at DC receive a wide range of distinctive experiences as we strive to offer our students the best of all worlds. At DC, students get the individualized benefits of a student-centered small college, but they also get a world of opportunities beyond. What does this mean? It means that our students start working with us before they even start their classes to put together distinctive Personal Success Plans, so that we can work with them to tailor their DC education and experiences to their own individual interests and goals. Throughout their four years at Defianc, our students benefit from a broad range of activities and experiences that are structured both to help them achieve their individual dreams and also to enable them to stand out in the job market and when applying to graduate schools. As part of that approach, we work with our students to help them develop their own Defiance College Resume. DC students also participate in a broad array of curricular and extra-curricular activities that give students distinctive hands-on experiences in their relevant fields. Just to name a few examples, we are proud of the work that our Criminal Justice students do in investigating cold cases for Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office in Detroit; our Education students get hands-on experience working in classrooms as early as their freshman year; Science students run and manage a 200+ acre wildlife preserve; through our Business Advantage Program, business, marketing, finance, sales, accounting and other students get hands-on experiences creating and running actual businesses. I could go on and on in terms of the different opportunities our Communications, Sport Management, Pre-Med, Social Work, Graphic Design, and students in many other areas. We are all partucularly proud of the great work that our students have done running Project 701, a unique student-run, separately-legally-incorporated non-profit, in which DC students create, develop, run and manage service projects. From working with the two hospitals in town to run a free primarycare clinic to micro-finance lending; from providing computer repair services to packing backpacks full of food for needy elementary school students to take home on weekends, our DC students are gaining the tools to become entrepreneurial life-long learners, while also helping to address important local, regional, national, and international issues. In fact, Defiance College was recently named one of the top 20 schools in the country in terms of community service and engagement. DC students also get unique opportunities to travel both domestically and internationally. Under our DC Global Program, we actually guarantee an international opportunity in the junior and senior year to students in good standing who successfully complete our full four-year program. Over the past two years, DC students have traveled to Cambodia, Belize, Tanzania, Ghana, Spain, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, London, Paris, Vienna, Prague, Hungary, Slovakia, and more. Similarly, on a domestic level, DC students have traveled to New York City, Washington, D.C., Portland (OR), Pittsburgh, Detroit, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Kansas City, Des Moines, Denver, Selma, Memphis, Chicago, Nashville, Florida, South Carolina, New Mexico and elsewhere. We are very proud of the opportunities we give our students to open their eyes, raise their sights, open their minds, and , in many cases, open thier hearts as well. I hope you notice some of the recent improvements to our athletic facilities. Our George M. Smart Athletic Center (“the George”) began operation in February 2012, and we are thrilled with the opportunities our students have to use this 84,000 square foot facility, with its 200-meter indoor track, tennis courts, basketball courts, volleyball courts, batting cages, fitness center, weight room, and much more. The new turf on our football/lacrosse field was installed in December 2012, and we also recently renovated our outdoor E. Stevens Dix Tennis Courts. The new bleachers and improved flooring in our Weaner Center has also enhanced the experience for our fans, and more improvements are underway across campus this year as well. I want to thank our entire team, including players, coaches, trainers, and staff for the great work they do every day and the numerous ways in which they go above and beyond on a regular basis. I also want to thank our alumni, the parents of our athletes and the various organizations, all of whom donate generously to our athletic programs. Members of the Defiance College Board of Trustees, the Purple and Gold Club, and the Alumni Varsity ‘D’ all contribute immeasurably as well, both as individuals and through their organizations. And the incomparable fculty at DC, together with extremely dedicated administrators and staff, all combine to make DC the special place that it is. We are pleased to have you as our guest at DC today, and I hope that you will return to campus frequently for both sporting events and the numerous cultural and academic events we are proud to host. Rudy Yovich - Director of Athletics ryovich@defiance.edu • (419) 783-2380

Rudy Yovich was named director of athletics at Defiance College during the summer of 2014. Yovich comes to Defiance after serving as the director of athletics at Owens Community College in Toledo since 2011 and was assistant director of athletics at Indiana University-Purdue University in Fort Wayne from 2003 to 2011. While at Owens, Yovich led an athletic department in which student-athletes improved both academically and athletically. During the 2012-13 season, student-athletes qualified for a record four national championships with every program qualifying for a regional tournament. The school had five All-Americans, nine Academic All-Americans, and two All-American Academic Teams, first-ever in school history. The school finished that academic year ranked 23rd nationally out of 401 schools in the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics Learfield Director’s Cup standings, the school’s highest finish ever. “In talking with the administration and athletic department staff at Defiance, I was impressed with their passion for student-athlete service. I look forward to building upon the amazing tradition of DC Athletics, while continuing to expand our involvement within the community.” Yovich’s experience clearly demonstrates his commitment to emphasizing the “student” portion of the term student-athlete. Upon his arrival at Owens, he implemented an action plan to increase departmental grade point average (GPA). This past academic year, more than 90 percent of second-year student-athletes graduated or transferred to four-year institutions. While serving at the NCAA Division I Indiana University-Purdue University in Fort Wayne, Yovich had direct administrative oversight of a portion of the department’s athletic programs as well as two student organizations. He previously held media relations and marketing positions with the United Soccer Conference, Fort Wayne; Christian Brothers University, Memphis; and Erie Otters Hockey Club in Erie, Pa. Yovich earned his bachelor’s degree at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and an MBA in sports management from Columbia Southern University.

Jodie Holava, head softball coach at Defiance College, became the assistant athletic director at Defiance during the summer of 2014. Holava, who will retain her coaching position, is the all-time wins leader in the history of the softball program. Holava arrived at DC in 2006. Under her mentorship, the softball program has won three conference championships and finished among the top three in final standings in NCAA regionals during four of her years as head coach. In addition, the softball team and individual student-athletes have earned dozens of All-Conference honors in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. The program has also excelled academically, earning numerous scholastic honors. Holava is active across the Defiance campus. In addition to her coaching responsibilities, she is an instructor in the First Year Experience program and serves on numerous academic and student life committees. Holava earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Mount Union in athletic training with a minor in health and secondary education. She holds a master’s degree in education from Cleveland State University. Before coming to Defiance, she was assistant softball coach at Notre Dame College of Ohio. She also coached the Northcoast Spirit, a traveling softball team sanctioned by the National Softball Association. The Spirit went to the NSA World Series each year with Holava as their coach.

Defiance College Sports Medicine features some of the finest facilities in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference and NCAA Division III. After recent renovations were completed to the athletic facilities on the campus of Defiance College, Yellow Jacket student-athletes now have access to one of the most comprehensive departments in the region. Boasting three separate locations within the Defiance Athletics sports complex, the athletic training team makes sure the student-athletes here at Defiance College receive the best treatment possible. The DC Athletic Training main office is located on the south side of the Karl H. Weaner Community Center. The staff also works out of the athletic training rooms located within Justin F. Coressel Stadium, as well as the Duane C. Hocking Athletic Training room within the new George M. Smart Athletic Center. Under the direction of Head Athletic Trainer Kevin Tong, Associate Athletic Trainer Kathleen Westfall and Assistant Athletic Trainer Andrew Bacon, the Defiance Athletic Training department works tirelessly to make sure our student-athletes receive the highest level of care possible. Defiance College also features the Athletic Training undergraduate program that enhances the services provided to the athletic teams. The staff also features a comprehensive medical team that features four physicians in a variety of medical specialties.

THIS IS DEFIANCE COLLEGE Defiance College is a private, liberal arts-based college providing outstanding academic programs and co-curricular activities for a student body of nearly 1,000 students. An interdisciplinary focus and distinctive curriculum ensure that students develop their skills in critical thinking and problem-solving. Students can enrich their education in any major with honors courses, participation in honors symposia, and international travel opportunities through DC’s popular Carolyn M. Small Honors Program. Many of our programs of study give the opportunity for students to be immersed in research in their discipline. For example, Restoration Ecology majors conduct field research at the 200-acre Thoreau Wildlife Sanctuary just two miles from campus. Internships and field experiences within each major will help develop the skills, abilities and knowledge to solidify career goals and strengthen one’s resume. We know there’s simply no better way to truly understand a subject than by taking what’s learned in the classroom and applying it out in the real world. Whatever the major, a student at Defiance can take their learning from the classroom into our community, across the United States or around the world. Defiance College is home to the nationally acclaimed McMaster School for Advancing Humanity, a program that is unique among colleges and universities across the country. McMaster gives students incredible opportunities to conduct research and service in specially-designed projects around the world. Any student can apply to participate, regardless of major. For example, in a third world village in Cambodia or Belize or Tanzania, a student majoring in molecular biology major can analyze water safety, a digital forensic science student can instruct children on internet safety, an education major can teach in classrooms, and a business administration student can help a women’s organization create a business plan to open a new restaurant. The Presidential Service Leader Program, part of the McMaster School, is designed for students who have served and led their community in some way, and who want to continue that commitment at Defiance. Students can apply your academic expertise, leadership skills and service in Project 701, a one-of-a-kind, student-run nonprofit organization in which students create, develop and run their own business or project. Defiance is consistently recognized by the prestigious President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. We are at the forefront of colleges across the country that embrace service and engagement, and we incorporate it into a DC education. Defiance College is also home of the Hench Autism Studies Program, an innovative, multi-faceted program designed to specifically address the late adolescent years and the transition of individuals with autism to adulthood. ATHLETIC FACILITIES The Defiance College Athletic Department is housed in the McMaster Center. The McMaster Center is named in honor of Drs. Harold and Helen McMaster and has played an intricate part in the growth and development of Yellow Jacket athletics. The McMaster Center houses administration and coach’s offices, but is also where the Karl H. Weaner Center, McMaster Gymnasium and one of three athletic training facilities are housed. The Karl H. Weaner Center is the home of the Yellow Jacket men’s and women’s basketball programs as well as the volleyball program. The newly redesigned arena features new seating and floor, as well as a full working press box with internet connection and web casting capabilities. Adjacent to the McMaster Center, is the recently completed George M. Smart Athletic Center. The George, is an 84,000 square-foot field house which opened in February of 2012. The multi-purpose floor provides additional year-round training areas for all 22 varsity athletic programs, but is officially home to the DC indoor track and field teams. The George also boasts a full athletic training room, expanded fitness and free-weight McMaster Center areas and two full-lengh batting cages. Located near the McMaster Center are the Yellow Jacket athletic outdoor facilities which include Justin F. Coressel Stadium, Winsper-Knobel Memorial Field, Dix Tennis Courts, Sal Hench Field and Craig A. Rutter Field. Coressel Stadium is field turf, 4,000-seat facility that’s home to the Yellow Jacket football, and men’s and women’s outdoor track & field programs. The facility contains locker rooms, concession stand, training room, team meeting room and a full-working press box with internet connection and web casting capabilities. Winsper-Knobel Field is the main competition facility for the DC men’s and women’s soccer teams. The natural grass field is located just east of the Dix Tennis Facility and Coressel Stadium. The field boasts a press tower with wireless internet access. In addition to the main playing surface, athletes have access to a warm-up and practice field located next to Winsper-Knobel Field. The Dix Tennis Courts are the main competition facility for the DC men’s and women’s tennis teams. In the summer of 2012, the Dix Tennis facility was renovated with a durable, crack resistant surface. The tennis courts are located just east of the Weaner Center. In addition to the outdoor tennis courts, the tennis programs have access to four indoor tennis courts located in The George.. The Yellow Jacket softball team calls Sal Hench Field home. The field was built in 1999-2000 in honor of long-time supporter of the College and DC athletics, Sal Hench. The field features open-faced dugouts and on-field bullpens as well as a two-story press box with concession stand, All-Conference “Wall of Fame” and full sound system. The outfield dimensions are 210 feet all around with a 28-foot by 12 foot inning-by-inning scoreboard in right field which was added in the spring of 2014. Craig A. Rutter Field is the home site for the DC Baseball program. Rutter Field sits in the center of the CD athletics complex. The field features a unique crushed brick infield with all grass baselines and a compacted limestone warning track that accents a Kentucky Bluegrass and Perennial Rye outfield. All this is complimented by visiting and home dugouts, bullpens and the “Green Monster” in center field. In 2004, a press box was added and is equipped with full sound capabilities which provide the Yellow Jackets and their fans with an energetic pre-game atmosphere.

YELLOW JACKETS IN THE COMMUNITY Defiance College has challenged students to defy the ordinary by exploring academic boundaries, taking on roles of civic responsibility and leadership, and becoming engaged on campus and in the community. All of this makes for an extraordinary college experience. Nowhere else will you find students committed to their communities like Defiance, and nowhere else will you find student-athletes and coaches as immersed in service and engagement. Each year, DC student-athletes collectively contribute more than 2,000 hours of service in their community. Several teams have traditional service projects that they perform on an annual basis. PURPLE & GOLD CLUB The Purple and Gold Club Inc. was founded in the early 1970’s by Defiance community members who wanted to do something extra for all the student-athletes at Defiance College. Since its inception, the club has continually grown and has exceeded 225 members. The club serves to provide both financial assistance and personal support for the entire athletics department. ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT PHILOSOPHY The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program serves as a window of opportunity for all prospective student-athletes to experience an extra-curricular educational and physical activity that fits within the general mission of the college to develop the whole person. The student-athlete will be exposed to a variety of opportunities for personal growth in the areas of intellectual, emotional, spiritual, social and physical dimensions as it relates to each individual and their respective sport. The student-athlete, as a team member, will be involved in a learning community that will strive for excellence both on the field and in the classroom while maintaining a dignity of fair play and continued emphasis on positive sportsmanship. Jointly, the coaches and student-athletes will build an engaged environment that will accentuate the learning process not only within the competitive arena but also within the college campus and the community as a whole. HEARTLAND COLLEGIATE ATHLETIC CONFERENCE Originally founded as the Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference, the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference has been in existance for over 25 years and has gone through several changes throughout the years. In June of 1987, the presidents of six private Indiana colleges and universities announced the formation of an athletic conference to allow their students to “live out” the ideal of the scholar athlete. The announcement came after 19 months of meetings among the institution’s presidents, athletic directors, and faculty athletic representatives. The ICAC was formed as an “academic” athletic conference, combining outstanding private education with top-notch intercollegiate athletics. Lewis Salter was President of Wabash College when the league was formed. The greatest advantage of the Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference is that its formation allowed schools to restore athletic rivalries that date back to the 1800’s. Conference sports include baseball, basketball, cross-country, golf, football, soccer, tennis, and track. In addition, a championship is decided in the non-mandatory sports of swimming and wrestling. On May 24, 1988, just less than one year after its formation, two more of Indiana’s premier small colleges, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and Taylor University joined the league, bringing the total number of schools to eight. Taylor was involved in the ICAC’s first meetings in the spring of 1987, but declined membership until 1988. The 1990-91 season marked the first complete year of competition among all eight schools in all eightvarsity sports with soccer joining the picture in the fall of 1990. The 1992-93 school year brought with it much discussion and many meetings in an attempt to bring women’s teams into the ICAC. After a long year of planning and a constitutional rewrite, women’s teams joined the ICAC late in the 1992-93 school year with 1993-94 the first year of co-ed competition within the ICAC. The 1998-99 school year brought significant changes in the conference. With the additions of Bluffton College, the College of Mount St. Joseph, and Wilmington College and the departure of DePauw University and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, the Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference changed its name to become the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. As an extension of the ICAC, the HCAC is an eight school academic athletic conference, which represents a revised version the old Hoosier-Buckeye Conference. The 1999-2000 school year saw yet more changes. Wabash’s competition in the 1999 football season marked its last involvement in the HCAC. Defiance College joined the league, beginning competition in the spring of 2000. In January of 2001, Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky, was accepted as a member. Transylvania began competition in the fall 2001 season. In July of 2006, Rose Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Indiana, was accepted as the conference’s ninth member. Rose Hulman began competition in the fall of 2006. As part of a year-long celebration in 2008-09, the league celebrated its 10th anniversary as the restructured HCAC. Each institution invited campus administrators, faculty, faculty athletic representatives, current or former athletic staff, alumni, and student-athletes. Also, the conference office invited current and former conference personnel, NCAA Division III select staff, and other key supporters of the HCAC. Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana was accepted as the 10th member of the conference in October of 2009 and began competition in the fall of 2010. On the playing field, HCAC member schools have had a national impact, highlighted by national champions in several sports and two schools making trips to the NCAA Division III basketball Final Four in the 1990s. Since the formation of the HCAC, members have produced 62 CoSIDA Academic All-Americans, 164 All-Americans, and 163 team qualifiers for NCAA Division III national championships. The league continues to seek growth and excellence on and off the playing field in the years to come. SEASON PREVIEW DEFIANCE, OHIO -- The Defiance College Yellow Jackets return the majority of their roster from their Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament semifinal team of 2015. The Yellow Jackets return five starters from the 2015 campaign and, despite the loss of all-conference libero Rebecca Kain, Defiance looks ready to return to the top of the Heartland in 2016. Defiance finished with an overall record of 11-19 that included a tough out-of-conference schedule with multiple ranked opponents. They were able to rebound to finish the HCAC schedule at 5-4, finishing in a tie for third before exiting the postseason tournament in the semifinals.

DEFENSE On the defensive side, DC has big shoes to fill with the exit of Rebecca Kain. There is still plenty of experience returning on the defensive side of the ball, led by senior Makayla Dennis (Bryan). Dennis played in all 114 sets played by the Yellow Jackets a year ago and finished second on the team with 323 digs (2.83 digs per set). Dennis also recorded 33 service aces and 12 set assists in 2015. Senior Dia Jackson (Detroit, Mich./Canton) looks to step into a bigger role for the Yellow Jackets. Having played in 105 sets a year ago, Jackson finished with 192 digs on the season. Jackson also added 12 kills and seven set assists. Junior Jaidyn Patridge (Toledo/ Springfield) looks to continue to battle for playing time after a great freshman campaign. Patridge had 233 digs in 110 sets as a freshman (2.12 digs per set). Patridge also added 27 set assists and 23 service aces in 2015. The Yellow Jackets will also add two freshmen to the mix on defense, including Abigail Cronin (Lambertville, Mich./Cardinall Stritch Catholic) and Alexa St. Julian (Oregon/Clay).

Senior Ari Mahaffey was the team’s leading setter in 2015 with 918 set assists (8.05 assists per set). She also led the team in blocks (36) and service aces (37).

HITTERS Defiance returns all of their top hitters from last season’s team with reigning All-HCAC performer Meredith Shank leading the way. Shank finished the season with 296 kills, which ties her for ninth best in the HCAC, in just 101 sets. Her 2.93 kills per set ranked her seventh in the conference. Shank also finished with 107 digs, 25 blocks, and 18 service aces in her sophomore season and looks to step into a bigger role in 2016. A sophomore and a senior look to continue their successful seasons of a year ago. Sophomore Marissa Windau (Castalia/Margaretta) looks to continue her success from a freshman campaign that saw her as the second option at outside hitter. Windau finished the year with 274 kills, 2.40 per set, as she played in every set. Windau was also second on the team with 31 total blocks and fourth with 24 service aces to go along with her 100 digs. The senior is Hope Neargarder (Union City/Mississinawa Valley). She was third on the team with 165 kills, average 1.56 per set in playing all but eight sets in 2015. The seniorto-be was also third on the team with 30 total blocks. Three others earned plenty of playing time last season and look to expand their roles. First is Brooke Plummer (Plain City/Jonathan Alder). As a freshman, Plummer finished with 104 kills while playing in 102 sets. She also added 21 blocks and 34 digs. Danielle Robbins (Westland, Mich./Wayne Memorial) garnered 95 kills while playing in 99 sets as a sophomore, while Sydney Unger (Frankfort, Ind./ Clinton Central) averaged 1.36 kills per set with 76 spikes in just 56 sets as she enters her junior season.

JACKSON Joining the forces to learn from the experienced group of upperclassmen will be freshmen Jessica Davis (Delta), Jenni Davis (Delta), and Emma Seitz (Toledo/Central Catholic). SETTERS A year ago, senior Ari Mahaffey (Porter, Ind./ Chesterton) took over the setting duties, making a huge impact, leading the Yellow Jackets in assists, blocks, and service aces. Mahaffey finished the year averaging 8.05 assists per set, marking her at fifth in the HCAC in that category. She was also fifth in the conference in service aces, finished with 37 aces with a .762 service percentage. Mahaffey finished the season with 37 blocks, also leading the team. She was third on the team in digs (297), while adding 90 kills as she was an all-around player for the Yellow Jackets. In addition to Mahaffey, look for sophomore Megan Overmann (Lorain/Marion L. Steele) to see playing time as a setter. Last season, Overmann played in 11 matches and 14 sets in a backup role coming off the bench. She ended her freshman season with 13 asssists (0.93 a/s) to go along with one kill and 11 digs. DC will add freshman setter Madi Hollis (Burlington, Ky./Randall K. Cooper) into the fold this season. SCHEDULE Defiance will open the season at the Ohio Northern University Invitational in Ada, playing their first game on Friday, Sept. 2 at 4 p.m. against Ohio Wesleyan University. The Yellow Jackets open the home portion of the schedule on Tuesday, Sept. 13 against the Heidelberg University at 7 p.m. in the Karl H. Weaner Center.

Brenner took over as the head volleyball coach at Defiance on January 17, 2012, bringing strong local ties and a rich volleyball pedigree with her to DC. In her first season at the helm of the Purple and Gold volleyball program, Coach Brenner put together a fantastic campaign with the Yellow Jackets. The team compiled an overall record of 18-13, which was the best since 2009, and also earned a 6-3 mark in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference action that was tops since 2008. The squads play ranked it fourth in the conference standings and earned it a birth to the HCAC Tournament, where it advanced to the second round before falling to MSJ. Brenner’s efforts on the season netted her HCAC Coach of the Year honors. With the award, Brenner became the 15th coach in DC history to have been honored as the HCAC Coach of the Year and the first since the 2007-08 athletic year. The award marked the third time a DC volleyball coach has received the honor. Since the 2012 season, Brenner has led her teams to a 52-37 record, including a 23-6 mark in her second year at the helm that also saw DC post a perfect 9-0 regular-season mark in conference play and the first HCAC regular-season title for the program. Brenner also garnered HCAC Coachof-the-Year accolades for the second straight year. The Jackets went on to repeat as conference regular-season champions in 2014 and make another appearance in the HCAC postseason. DC advanced to the championship match for the fourth time since the conference tournament’s inception, but fell short finishing as runners-up. To date, Brenner has led the Jackets to a spot in the HCAC Tournament every season in addition to two HCAC regular-season titles, coached 12 All-HCAC players, including eight first-team honorees, three All-Freshman

players and one HCAC Player of the Year. Brenner’s teams have also carried its success to the classroom with 15 Academic All-HCAC awards and one national academic award winner. A Defiance, Ohio native, Brenner was a two-time Western Buckeye League Player of the Year, while also earning first-team All-Ohio honors in 2001 for Defiance High School. After concluding a standout prep career, Brenner began a collegiate career at Ohio State University and then transferred to the University of Washington for her final three seasons. During her time with the Huskies, Brenner became a two-time AllPAC-10 performer and led Washington to a pair of PAC-10 Championships. The success continued on the national stage, where Brenner and UW advanced to the NCAA Division I Final Four in 2004 and 2005 and claimed the NCAA Division I National Championship in 2005. Brenner went on to play two years of professional volleyball in Puerto Rico and was voted into the athletic Hall of Fame at the University of Washington, as well as Defiance High School in 2010. Along with her extensive success on the volleyball court at the collegiate and professional ranks, Brenner also boasts eight years of coaching experience at various club and prep levels, which includes stints on staff with Defiance High and multiple club programs. Brenner began her coaching career as an assistant for the Cascade Volleyball Club in 2004 and also worked the UW summer volleyball camps from 2004 through 2006, before returning to northwest Ohio. Since that time, Brenner spent six years as the director of the Hagerty Volleyball Camp that hosted summer camps at several local high schools, including Defiance, Ayersville and Hicksville. She also recently started up the Defiance Volleyball Club that ranges from 10U to 18U competition. Brenner also served as the head coach of the Toledo Volleyball Club from 2008 through 2011, leading the team to three-straight appearances at the United States of America Volleyball Nationals and working as the club’s performance trainer during each of those final three campaigns. Brenner is married to her husband, Brian, and the couple has a son named Brayden.

Graduate Assistant Coach Second Year Elmhurst, Illinois St. Norbert (Wisc.) College, 2013

Catherine Guido begins her second season with the Yellow Jackets volleyball team in the fall of 2016, serving as the assistant coach. Guido, a native of Elmhurst, Illinois, comes to Defiance after completing her playing career and graduating from St. Norbert (Wisc.) College. Guido graduated in May 2013 with a bachelor of arts in communications. During her career at St. Norbert (Wisc.), Guido was a four-year varsity letter winner where she played libero and served as captain for two years. She helped lead her team to two Midwest Conference titles and two NCAA tournament appearances. She was the 2012 Midwest Conference Player

of the Year and a three-time first-team All-Conference selection. Guido also earned honorable mention American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-Region honors. She is currently the school record leader in career digs with 2,614. After graduation, Guido worked for two seasons with the Green Bay Gamblers of the United States Hockey League. While at Defiance, Guido is working towards a master’s of arts in education with a concentration in sports coaching and will graduate in May 2017.

Assistant Coach First Year South Lyon, Mich. Defiance College, 2015

Alicia Kalik will be in her first season as an assistant coach with the Defiance volleyball program. Kalik is a 2015 graduate of the College and was a standout volleyball player as a student-athlete. She was a four-time AllHeartland Collegiate Athletic Conference award winner, including the HCAC Freshman-of-the-Year in 2011. During her tenure as a player, the Yellow Jackets claimed their first HCAC regular-season title in program history (2013) and posted a 72-45 record for a .615 winning percentage. Kalik went on to help lead DC to a second conference regular-season championship the very next season (2014). Kalik ended her career as program’s all-time leader in assists (3,752) and

assists per set (9.17). She is also the program’s all-time leader in service aces (102) in the 25-point rally scoring era and holds the single-match record for most assists (60). In addition to her assist and service aces totals, Kalik played in a total of 117 matches and 409 sets. She had 292 kills (0.71 kills per set), had 917 digs (2.24 digs per set) and 170 total blocks (0.42 blocks per set). Kalik’s success on the playing court also carried over into the classroom as she was a three-time Tom Bohlsen Academic All-HCAC honoree in addition to being a first-team Capital One Academic All-District selection as a senior.
