THIS IS DEFIANCE COLLEGE

Defiance College is a private liberal arts-based college providing outstanding academic programs and co-curricular activities for a student body of more than 1,000 students. Defiance College offers students the best of both worlds. In a small campus environment, students can have hands-on experiences in their field of study through quality internships, domestic and international travel, diverse cultural encounters, and distinctive service and research opportunities for personal and professional growth. The Princeton Review features Defiance College in Colleges with a Conscience: 81 Great Schools with Outstanding Community Involvement. Defiance College has been named for six-consecutive years to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for its commitment to community service, and for the past three years DC has been named a Military Friendly School for providing significant benefits and services to veterans. Defiance College was also selected by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching to receive its Community Engagement Classification. Defiance College offers students a world of opportunities to enhance their academic experience, from cultural visits in world-class cities across the continent, to international trips through the DC Global program, all of which open minds to new ideas and cultures and provide insights to help in competition for jobs and graduate school placement. The McMaster School for Advancing Humanity was created to provide opportunities for DC undergraduate students and faculty to more closely examine global issues and how they affect the human condition. Faculty and students conducted projects during the 2011-2012 year in Belize, Cambodia and Ghana. The School serves as the umbrella for the Service Leadership Program developing leadership communication, conflict resolution and cultural awareness, with the Carolyn M. Small Honors Program providing opportunities for students to participate in an honors curriculum and Project 701, a student-run nonprofit organization. Defiance College is also home of the Hench Autism Studies Program, an innovative, multi-faceted program designed to specifically address the late adolescent years and the transition of individuals with autism to adulthood. Student life is an important part of a Defiance College education. Activities include student government, musical and theater groups, religious organizations, intercultural organizations, honor societies, special interest groups, intramural athletics, and four Greek chapters including a service fraternity. As a national leader in the field of service learning and engagement, DC teaches students to take the knowledge they have gained and use it to change lives for the better in their communities, in distant villages and in their careers. Approximately 10,000 men and women across the globe claim Defiance College as their alma mater, and they excel in all walks of life.

WELCOME TO DEFIANCE

Dear Fellow Defiance College Fan:

The entire DC family joins me in welcoming you to our campus and to today’s game. There are many exciting things happening at Defiance College, and we certainly hope that you will take advantage of the opportunity to discover them. Over the past several years, we have seen significant increases in applications to the College, and those applications come from many parts of our nation and from other parts of the world as well. More and more students (and their parents) are realizing that there are very good reasons for them to travel to Defiance so that they can take advantage of the distinctive advantages of a DC education. We are proud that Defiance strives to offer students the best of all worlds. At DC, students get the individualized benefits of a student-centered small college but they also get a world of opportunities beyond. Let me explain. DC works to help students grow as people, providing individualized attention in the classroom, the guidance of Personal Success Plans, mentoring, and assistance geared to the challenges and potential of each student. DC provides this in a caring and supportive setting, enabling students to challenge themselves in and grow as individuals, leaders and citizens committed to service. At the same time, through a broad array of curricular and extra-curricular activities, DC opens to students an entire world of opportunities, helping students to develop a distinctive Defiance College Resume that will enable them to stand out in the job market and when applying to graduate schools. From a broad-based liberal arts education, to innovative programs that give students distinctive hands-on experience in their relevant fields, to international and domestic travel opportunities, to exposure to diverse cultural experiences, to the use of technologies to bring the world into the classroom, to the unique service and research opportunities, DC aims to give students the tools they need to become life-long learners and to make contributions to a changing world. While you are enjoying today’s events on campus, I hope you will have an opportunity to get to know some of our students individually. They are a wonderful group, with incredible potential. I very much enjoy being part of the DC family with them, as they bring excitement, energy, fresh perspectives, and commitment to service to name just a few of their many attributes. I also hope you will take advantage of the opportunity to tour some of the new additions to our campus, such as the George M. Smart Athletic Center. This 84,000 square foot facility provides tremendous opportunities for our students, with a 200-meter indoor track, tennis courts, basketball courts, volleyball courts, batting cages, fitness center, weight room, and much more. The George has already become a vital center of activity for our students and our campus. I want to thank our entire team, including players, coaches, trainers and staff, for the great work they do every day and the numerous ways in which they go above and beyond on a regular basis. I also want to thank our alumni, the parents of our athletes and the various organizations, all of whom donate generously to our athletic programs. Members of the Defiance College Board of Trustees, the Purple and Gold Club, and the Alumni Varsity ‘D’ all contribute immeasurably as well, both as individuals and through their organizations. And the incomparable faculty at DC, together with extremely dedicated administrators and staff, all combine to make DC the special place that it is. We are pleased to have you as our guest at DC today, and I hope that you will return to campus frequently for both sporting events and the numerous cultural and academic events we are so proud to host. Go Jackets!

GEORGE M. SMART ATHLETIC CENTER 4

Sincerely, Mark C. Gordon, President

IN THE COMMUNITY

DC FOOTBALL 2012 12-TimeConferenceChampions -1920,1924,1931,1953,1962,1966,1968,1969,1970,1976,1977,2001

Defiance College has challenged students to defy the ordinary by exploring academic boundaries, taking on roles of civic responsibility and leadership, and becoming engaged on campus and in the community. All of this makes for an extraordinary college experience. Nowhere else will you find students committed to their communities like Defiance College, and nowhere else will you find student-athletes and coaches as immersed in service and engagement. During the 2011-2012 academic year, Defiance College student-athletes contributed 2,028 hours of service in their community. The football team contributed 625 hours of service in the fall of 2012. It is a tradition for the DC football team to hold its annual community service day before launching August summer camp. This year, team members spread out across the city and county to lend a hand. Their sites included Kids’ Creation playground, multiple Defiance city parks, Camp Lakota, Camp Libbey, Skylark Youth Center and the Defiance County fairgrounds in Hicksville. In addition, football team members sorted and checked warehoused Christmas lights for the city of Defiance. Many student-athletes at DC have taken active roles in leadership and service initiatives campus-wide. Such experiences give Defiance College students a greater awareness of a diverse world and its needs as well as the leadership skills to create positive change. Football team members Ryne Rogers, D.J. Brigham, Tanner Engle, Zachary Lopez and Vinny Polverine are DC Service Leaders from the sophomore, junior and senior classes. Lopez is also a McMaster Scholar to Belize for the current academic year. Defiance College is featured for excellence in blending academics with community work by The Princeton Review in its Colleges with a Conscience: 81 Great Schools with Outstanding Community Involvement. Defiance is also included in the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for its commitment to community service.

DEFIANCE COLLEGE ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHY

The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program serves as a window of opportunity for all prospective student-athletes to experience an extra-curricular educational and physical activity that fits within the general mission of the college to develop the whole person. The student-athlete will be exposed to a variety of opportunities for personal growth in the areas of intellectual, emotional, spiritual, social and physical dimensions as it relates to each individual and their respective sport. The student-athlete, as a team member, will be involved in a learning community that will strive for excellence both on the field and in the classroom while maintaining a dignity of fair play and continued emphasis on positive sportsmanship. Jointly, the coaches and student-athletes will build an engaged environment that will accentuate the learning process not only within the competitive arena but also within the college campus and the community as a whole. An emphasis will be placed on

12

the impact of participation and personal growth, rather than scoreboard success, in a balanced sports program where equitable sports opportunities will be available to both genders. The student-athletes of Defiance College choose to participate in the intercollegiate athletics program for a variety of reasons but none of which includes athletic related financial aid, or the promise of financial security through professional athletic stardom. Through participation in the intercollegiate athletics program, a studentathlete continues to compete for the love of sport, the thrill of competition and the fulfillment of countless intrinsic values. The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program strives to be an integral and cohesive part of the collegiate learning and living process, appropriately well suited to co-exist with the Defiance College mission statement…to know, to lead, to serve and to understand.

Brian Sheehan began his post as the 31st head coach in the history of the Defiance College football program on January 2 of 2012. Sheehan joined the Yellow Jackets after spending the past five seasons as the offensive coordinator at Thomas More, where he helped lead the Saints to President’s Athletic Conference Championships and a spot in the NCAA Division III Playoffs in each of his final four seasons with the program. Sheehan’s high-scoring option offenses at Thomas More helped the Saints set four single-season team offensive records during the 2009 and 2010 campaigns, while storming through each regular season with an unblemished record. The Saints scored 33.8 points per game in 2011, behind 199.7 rushing yards per outing and averaged 32.7 points per game from 2009 through 2011. During that time, Sheehan helped Thomas More to a 31-4 overall record that included a 19-1 league mark and a pair of NCAA Division III National Tournament victories. In all, Sheehan helped the Saints to a 43-13 record over five seasons, four of the program’s six NCAA Playoff bids, four PAC crowns and three-straight final regular season rankings inside the top-20 in the nation. Sheehan’s contributions to the TMC program went far beyond running the offense, as he created the Thomas More Leadership Workshop to promote team unity and individual development within the Saints’ football program, led an overhaul of the recruit-

14

ing and communication database and coordinated the program’s Relay for Life team for the American Cancer Society. Prior to his five-year stint guiding the offense from the sidelines at Thomas More, Sheehan served on staff at Hobart College as the wide receivers and strength coach. During his two years at Hobart, Sheehan implemented a new year-round strength and conditioning program and helped the Statesmen post a 17-4 record, en route to a pair of trips to the NCAA Playoffs. Sheehan also served on staff at Heidelberg University from 2003 through 2005, where he started his coaching career as the offensive coordinator for the junior varsity program and completed a master’s degree in education. The Cleveland, Ohio, native earned undergraduate degrees in psychology and business management in 2003 from Marietta College, while serving as a three-year starter at the tight end position with the Pioneers. Sheehan started on offense and defense and was a team captain for the squad during his senior season. Along with his experiences on the football field, Sheehan has contributed to X&O Labs Coaching Research and Manual of Football Drills and Skills, which were published in 2011 and has lectured at multiple football coaching clinics in the past several years. Sheehan is married to his wife, Mandy, and the couple resides in Defiance.

OLMY OLMSTEAD - OFFENSIVE LINE COACH (419) 783-2447 • EOLMSTEAD@DEFIANCE.EDU • FIRST SEASON

Olmy Olmstead is in his first season on the sidelines with Defiance, after joining the program as the offensive line coach prior to the 2012 campaign.

Olmstead got his first taste of the NCAA Division III level as a standout student-athlete at Wabash College, where he was a four-year letterman as a kicker, offensive lineman and fullback for the nationally ranked Little Giants.

Olmstead came to Defiance after spending the previous three seasons on staff at Eastern Michigan University, where he helped build a championship mindset with the Eagles and saw EMU claim the Mid-American Conference’s Michigan Championship in 2011.

The Granville, Ohio, native rounded out his playing career on the gridiron as one of three kickers in Wabash history to successfully kick 100 extra points. Olmstead also holds the school record for converting nine extra points in a single game and his square-toe kicking shoe was placed on display at the NCAA Hall of Champions.

During his time at Eastern Michigan, Olmstead specialized with the offensive line from 2009 through 2011. In his final year with the program, Olmstead saw the Eagles rank 16th among all NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision programs in rushing yards with 218.3 per game.

Olmstead graduated from Wabash in 2004 with a degree in history and went on to earn a master’s degree in special education from Wilmington in 2008. Olmstead also completed doctoral studies in educational leadership, focusing on retention rates and academic services provided for student-athletes during his time at Eastern Michigan.

Prior to his stint with EMU, Olmstead worked three seasons as a graduate assistant coach at Wilmington College, before remaining of staff and being promoted to assistant coach in 2007. During his four-year tenure with the Quakers, Olmstead worked primarily with running backs and tight ends, while serving as the special teams coordinator.

Along with his duties on staff with the Purple and Gold, Olmstead assists the director of retention as an academic support coordinator for Defiance College.

Willoughby also excelled on the gridiron for Shorter, serving as a fouryear starter on the offensive line from 2007 through 2010. The Marietta, Ga., native held the captain position in his final two seasons and was selected as an Honorable Mention All-Mid-South Conference performer as a senior. Along with the individual accomplishments, Willoughby helped Shorter lead the nation in rushing in 2008 and 2009, while claiming the MSC West Division Championship in 2008.

DON PERNA - SLOT BACKS COACH (419) 783-2583 • FIFTH SEASON

Don Perna is in his fifth year with the Defiance College football program and is primarily responsible for coaching the slot backs.

The 2012 campaign is the first for Bryan Driskell as the new wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator for Defiance College. Driskell brought five years of coaching experience with him to DC, after holding similar positions at NCAA Division III programs for four of those seasons. In that time, Driskell was on staff with four conference champions and one national championship team. Driskell’s last coaching stop before joining the Purple and Gold was a two-year tenure at Christopher Newport University as the wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator. While at CNU, Driskell designed and implemented the pass offense scheme for each game and saw the Captains set program records in wins, scoring offense, passing offense, total offense, passing touchdowns and completions, en route to winning the USA South Conference Championship. Prior to his two years at CNU, Driskell held the same position at Duquesne University. In his single season with DU, the Dukes claimed the NCAA

The Lima, Ohio, native spent time at the quarterback and wide receiver positions during his collegiate playing career, starting at Methodist University, before playing his final three seasons at Salisbury University. Driskell went on to earn a degree in history from Salisbury in 2002 and has continued working towards a master’s degree in Christian studies at Denver Seminary since 2008. Prior to his head coaching stint with AU, Judge held coordinator positions for each of the previous 13 seasons during stops at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, Simpson College and Morehead State University.

Judge held both the offensive and defensive coordinator tags during his three years at UW-Stevens Point, after leading the defensive unit for six years at Simpson. Judge’s first coordinator opportunity came with Morehead State, where he ran the offense and was the recruiting coordinator over a four-year span. The Gilbert, Iowa, native got his start in coaching during five years as a student assistant at Iowa State University, where he completed a degree in physical education in 1987 with endorsements in coaching and secondary teaching. Judge then worked as a graduate assistant for two seasons at Purdue University, while earning a master’s degree in sports administration in 1989. Judge is married to his wife, Lauri, and has two children, Katie and Thomas.

SEASON OUTLOOK

DC FOOTBALL 2012 52All-AmericansinProgramHistory -33WinningSeasonsontheGridiron

DEFIANCE, Ohio - One word can be used to describe nearly everything about the Defiance College football program in 2012, and that word is new. The Purple and Gold will enter the campaign under new head coach Brian Sheehan and will showcase new schemes on both sides of the ball, along with a host of new faces that will be embracing new opportunities. Sheehan and his staff brought in 59 freshmen and enter the season with a 110-man roster that features 30 returning letterwinners and 12 returning starters from the 2011 team that went 4-4 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. The even record marked the sixth time in the last seven seasons that DC has ended at .500 or better against conference foes.

where he played in nine varsity contests. Strickland boasts the speed and toughness needed to excel in a successful rushing attack and will have the opportunity to grab the starting role in camp. Moore used a tremendous spring to leap up the depth chart and will join Burrell in battling for carries. A pair of promising rookies will also have an opportunity to impact the rotation, as Aaron Smith and Shaq Monahan-Estes will each get a long look during the preseason and figure to have an impact before the end of the 2012 season.

The hard work appears to be paying off, as a committed and enthused roster has emerged eager to tackle the challenges of reaching its full potential on and off the field in 2012.

RUNNING BACK The Yellow Jackets will also feature a new look in the backfield, with sophomores Eric Strickland, Denzel Moore and Trevon Burrell all hoping to power the DC ground game in 2012. The young trio will be asked to replace the production of All-HCAC rusher, Drew Kuesel, who was the program’s featured back over the majority of the past four campaigns. Strickland will convert from the linebacker slot as a freshman,

SLOT BACK Coach Sheehan’s new-look offense will also utilize the slot back position to complement the power and size of the running backs mentioned previously. Joey Chester enters his third season with the Jackets as the projected starter. Chester has played in 17 games already for DC and averaged 7.3 yards per touch one year ago. Sophomore Todd Roberts played in all 10 outings as a member of the special teams unit during his rookie collegiate season and will be asked to bring his physical approach to the offensive side of the ball in 2012. Newcomer and Defiance High standout, Nick Lopez, will also see time in the backfield for the Yellow Jackets as another

Improving on that streak will hinge on Sheehan’s ability to bring all of the new pieces together into one successful unit. That process was started immediately and has carried on throughout the spring season, through the summer and into preseason camp.

QUARTERBACK The first challenge will be under center, where juniors Aaron Spence and Garrett Teague will battle for the starting role at quarterback for Defiance. Spence and Teague have seen action at quarterback for DC over the past two seasons as the backups for All-HCAC perfomer and four-year starter, Rick Powell. Both should be able to make a smooth transition into the offense, as their speed and arm strength will translate well into DC’s spread attack. Spence played in five contests in 2011 and capitalized on his lone start by completing 15 passes for 122 yards and rushing for a pair of touchdowns and 107 yards at Franklin. Despite not seeing any varsity action last season, Teague served as the primary backup in 2010 by taking snaps in eight games as a collegiate rookie.

piece of the exciting freshmen class for Coach Sheehan’s staff. TIGHT END A young Defiance lineup will be the least experienced at the tight end positions, where freshmen Sam Mason and Mitch Lhamon will be asked to contribute immediately. Mason will bring tremendous athleticism and hands to the position for DC, while Lhamon excelled as a blocker during his prep career and will be a valuable part of the running game for Defiance. WIDE RECEIVER In contrast to the youth at the tight end slots, the Jackets will feature seniors Jon Carrabino and Aaron Choice, junior Brian Mircovich and sophomore Bryan Weaver at the wide receiver position. Carrabino and Mircovich have each proven to be impact performers in the DC offense when healthy and could be primed for big years in 2012. Carrabino has played in 27 games over the past three seasons and can exploit opposing defenses with his speed and versatility. Mircovich broke out with 18 catches for 188 yards over his first four varsity showings in 2011 and provides Defiance with a solid route runner on the edges. OFFENSIVE LINE In order for Defiance’s offense to perform more efficiently in 2012,

it will need steady production from the offensive line throughout the season. The Jackets will turn to returners Chase Cohen, Tanner Engle, Mitch Smith, Seth Kimberlin and Patrick Hartman to anchor the improved unit. That group will be bolstered by a stout incoming crop of linemen, with Joe Niehaus, Garrett Waiters and Lance Vetter leading the pack of freshmen looking to earn time in the trenches.

LINEBACKER Seniors Hunter Robertson and James Buari will be expected to hold down the starting linebacker positions, with junior Blaine McGowan and sophomore Calab Wagner also seeing significant time. Robertson was tabbed as an All-HCAC standout after pacing the Jackets with 79 tackles last season and has picked up 154 stops over the 2010 and 2011 campaigns. Buari earned four starts and played in all 10 games as a junior, and McGowan averaged 9.8 hits over his final four contests and ended his breakout 2011 season with 70 tackles and 5.5 hits for lost yardage.

DEFENSIVE LINE While DC features many new faces on offense, the defensive unit of the Purple and Gold is flush with experienced returners. That is especially true on the front line, where seniors Gregg Pickett and D.J. Brigham join juniors Seth Evans and Andrew Leverenz. The physical group is anchored by All-HCAC tackle, Pickett, who registered 52 tackles, 10.0 hits for lost yardage and 3.5 sacks during his breakout junior year. Brigham also excelled in 2012 with 32 hits and 2.5 sacks. Leverenz boasts the most strength on the roster and used an outstanding camp to position himself for a starting role on the edge, while Evans is also poised to see time as a pass rusher. Juniors Jon Day and Ryne Rogers will join sophomore Jack McIntee and promising freshman Rayon Calloway on the depth chart.

DEFENSIVE BACK Three-time First-Team All-HCAC selection, Tony Sierra, will highlight an experienced secondary for Defiance in 2012. Sierra ended with 52 tackles one year ago and has played in all 30 varsity contests during his outstanding career on the gridiron with the Purple and Gold. Sierra will be joined by fellow seniors Matt Forry, Brad Sealey, Mason Foulk and Jordan Taylor in DC’s new three-safety lineup, with sophomores Vinny Polverine and Torrence Smith also expected to contribute after making significant improvements during the offseason. Another key cog in the secondary will be sophomore Josh Slayton, who

DC FOOTBALL 2012 12-TimeConferenceChampions -1920,1924,1931,1953,1962,1966,1968,1969,1970,1976,1977,2001

BRIGHAM earned All-HCAC honors as a collegiate rookie, after finishing third in the HCAC with 10 passes defended in 10 starts. Slayton also notched 27 solo hits among his 41 total tackles in 2011. Senior Kyle Keegan should hold down the other cornerback position, after adding strength during the offseason. Senior Terrence Plummer and junior Kaleb Rexrode could also battle for time, along with an outstanding freshmen trio of Jorry Matherson, Chris King and Leroy Cheatham. Matherson boasts the best speed on the Yellow Jacket roster and could make an impact on the DC return game as well. SPECIAL TEAMS A pair of familiar names will anchor the kicking game, with junior Aaron Spence handling the punting duties and sophomore Spencer Saunders repeating his rookie season role by handling kickoffs, point-after attempts and field goal tries. Saunders connected on 19of-22 point-after tries in 2011 and split the uprights in three of his five field goal attempts. Spence averaged 32.6 yards per punt over 18 attempts and stuck a trio of punts inside the 20-yard line. Spence and Saunders will also be asked to showcase their athletic skill sets on fake plays, which should make the Jackets a dangerous team to defend in fourthdown situations.
