THIS IS DEFIANCE COLLEGE Defiance College, founded in 1850, is a private liberal arts college affiliated with the United Church of Christ, providing outstanding academic programs and co-curricular activities for a student body of nearly 1,100 students.

Building on a strong foundation of more than a century of educating citizens for lives of leadership and service, Defiance College provides opportunities for its students to make a meaningful impact on society in the twenty-first century with an educational experience of engagement.

We hope that while you are with us today, you will have the opportunity to explore as many parts of Defiance College as possible and that you will share in the excitement about DC continuing to grow around the nation. This year’s entering freshman class is the largest in recent memory. During the past year, we have seen significant increases in applications, with particular increases in applications from outside Ohio, as we become more and more a college with national reach and scope. In fact, this past year, more than half of the students applying to DC came from outside Ohio, representing 48 states and territories.

The Princeton Review features Defiance College in Colleges with a Conscience: 81 Great Schools with Outstanding Community Involvement. Defiance College has been named for five-consecutive years to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for its commitment to community service, and for the past two years DC has been named a Military Friendly School for providing significant benefits and services to veterans. Defiance College is also one of 119 U.S. colleges and universities selected by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching to receive its Community Engagement Classification. The McMaster School for Advancing Humanity was created to provide opportunities for DC undergraduate students and faculty to more closely examine global issues and how they affect the human condition. Faculty and students conducted projects during the 2010-2011 year in Belize, Cambodia and New Orleans. The School serves as the umbrella for the Service Leadership Program developing leadership communication, conflict resolution and cultural awareness; the Carolyn M. Small Honors Program providing opportunities for students to participate in an honors curriculum; and Project 701, a student-run nonprofit organization. Defiance College offers students a world of opportunities to enhance their academic experience, from cultural visits in world-class cities across the continent, to international trips through the DC Global program, all of which open minds to new ideas and cultures and provide insights to help in competition for jobs and graduate school placement. Defiance College is also home of the Hench Autism Studies Program, an innovative, multi-faceted program designed to specifically address the late adolescent years and the transition of individuals with autism to adulthood. Student life is an important part of a Defiance College education. The entire Defiance College family joins me in welcoming you to our campus and to today’s game.

Why are students traveling from all around the United States (and other countries as well) to attend DC? I think it is because Defiance College offers students the best of all worlds. At DC, students get the individualized benefits of a student-centered, small college, but they also get a world of opportunities beyond. Let me explain. As a small college, DC works to help students grow as people, providing individualized attention in the classroom, the guidance of Personal Success Plans, mentoring, and assistance geared to the challenges and potential of each student. DC provides this in a rural, caring, and supportive setting, thereby enabling students to challenge themselves in new ways and grow as individuals, leaders, and citizens committed to service. At the same time, however, through a broad array of curricular and extra-curricular activities, DC opens to students an entire world of opportunities, helping students to develop a distinctive Defiance College Resume that will enable them to stand out in the job market and when applying to graduate schools. The Defiance College men’s basketball team spent one week in Jamaica in May as part of a service project with Christian Service International. The experience resulted in fresh perspectives and lasting memories for those fortunate enough to have participated. The Yellow Jackets departed for Jamaica from Columbus, Ohio, and returned seven days later with a changed outlook on life. The impact did not come from the excitement of visiting a new country or the fun of relaxing on the beach, but from the relationships forged and the life lessons learned. “I am really pleased with the way the trip went,” remarked head coach Kyle Brumett. “I am proud of how the players took advantage of this opportunity and embraced the experience. It is obvious to me that they have all grown tremendously from it.” Brumett added, “For me personally, this was an amazing week. I enjoyed spending the time with my players in a non-basketball setting but I also really came to appreciate the people of Jamaica. I feel we have all learned quite a bit and my hope is that we take this new outlook and apply it to our own lives.” “My experience in Jamaica has been life changing,” said junior Logan Wolfrum. “The trip presented me with my first time flying, first time out of the United States and my first mission trip, but it was about the people of Jamaica and making connections. These kids changed my life forever and I will never forget about them.” Senior Anthony Brown reflected on how taking the opportunity to serve allowed him to come back with a new outlook on his life by saying, “It is a very humbling experience to serve someone less fortunate than you and to try to make their life a little better. I learned to be thankful and appreciative for the blessings God has given me.” The group’s service work took place primarily at St. Mary Technical High School, where members of the team painted the interior and exterior of a wing of the school and led physical education courses with the Jamaican students. The DC group taught the students how to play basketball and learned how to play cricket, while also playing several soccer matches with the students. DC staff and administrators also spent part of the week conducting projects at Belfield Basic School and Marymount High School. “Going to Jamaica was an amazing experience that allowed us to strengthen relationships with each other, new friends and most importantly with God,” said senior Kyle Tietje. “Talking with the students of Jamaica brought to light the many similarities we have, while also highlighting some of the differences. One of the biggest differences was the lack of opportunities those students have compared to those in my life. It really made me appreciate everything much more and made me determined to take better advantage of all that is offered to me. This trip has made a lasting impact on the way that I will choose to live my life.” Kyle’s twin brother and fellow senior Kevin echoed those sentiments by saying, “Seeing how the people of Jamaica live and the way that they appreciate every opportunity showed the rest of us how lucky we truly are. This trip put a lot of things into perspective for me.” Kevin’s final thought was shared by the rest of the DC group, “I am very grateful for the opportunity to have done this.” In addition to the Jamaica trip, the team has also conducted recent service projects with Special Olympics in Columbus and a 5K walk/run for Sunshine Inc. of Toledo, and given assistance with remodeling of St. John Lutheran Church in Defiance.

ATHLETICS FACILITIES Yellow Jacket basketball utilizes several facilities on the Defiance College campus. Whether the team is competing against an HCAC rival at the Karl H. Weaner Community Center, or eating a pregame meal at the Serrick Campus Center, Defiance College coaches, administration and staff are devoted to providing the squad with the best facilities possible. The Weaner Center supplies a classic basketball atmosphere for the always exciting games with an adjacent training room, locker rooms, team room and pressbox. The Smart Fitness Center allows the Yellow Jackets to train on state-of-theart cardiovascular equipment, as well as free-weight and Nautilus machines. The team also includes the McMaster Center gymnasium and weight room in its regular practice routine. DC has also started construction on an 84,000 square-foot field house that is set to open at the end of the 2011 year. The multi-purpose floor will provide additional training areas for all 21 varsity athletic programs at Defiance, while the McMaster Center weight room and Smart Fitness Center will be moved to the new facility to provide the campus with a fitness and recreational hub.

DEFIANCE COLLEGE ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHY

The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program serves as a window of opportunity for all prospective student-athletes to experience an extra-curricular educational and physical activity that fits within the general mission of the college to develop the whole person. The student-athlete will be exposed to a variety of opportunities for personal growth in the areas of intellectual, emotional, spiritual, social and physical dimensions as it relates to each individual and their respective sport. The student-athlete, as a team member, will be involved in a learning community that will strive for excellence both on the field and in the classroom while maintaining a dignity of fair play and continued emphasis on positive sportsmanship. Jointly, the coaches and student-athletes will build an engaged environment that will accentuate the learning process not only within the competitive arena but also within the college campus

and the community as a whole. An emphasis will be placed on the impact of participation and personal growth, rather than scoreboard success, in a balanced sports program where equitable sports opportunities will be available to both genders. The student-athletes of Defiance College choose to participate in the intercollegiate athletics program for a variety of reasons but none of which includes athletic related financial aid or the promise of financial security through professional athletic stardom. Through participation in the intercollegiate athletics program, a studentathlete continues to compete for the love of sport, the thrill of competition and the fulfillment of countless intrinsic values. KYLE BRUMETT

HEAD COACH / FOURTH YEAR (419) 783-2346 / KBRUMETT@DEFIANCE.EDU Kyle Brumett is in his fourth season as the head coach for the men’s basketball program at Defiance College, after taking over the post on May 19, 2008. The first three years of Brumett’s tenure with the Purple and Gold have been rich with accomplishments and accolades for the program that has now posted a winning record in fivestraight seasons. Brumett boasts a 54-27 overall record with the Yellow Jackets and his .667 winning percentage at Defiance marks the second highest career winning percentage of any coach in program history. His DC squads have been especially tough to beat on the home planks, where Defiance is 30-8 inside the Karl H. Weaner Community Center during the Brumett era. In 2009-2010 Brumett guided DC to one of the finest seasons in school history, as its 23-6 clip gave Defiance its best single-season record and highest win total of the program’s NCAA Division III era. The Jackets got off to their best start since 1973 and rolled to the program’s 1,300th victory in school history, 15th 20-win season, 26th conference championship, fourth NCAA Tournament appearance and 34th postseason berth.

seed, before logging three-straight road victories over the top-three teams in the league to claim the title. The impressive tournament run concluded with a thrilling, 82-77, overtime victory over the top-seeded Aurora squad. Along with his time as the Lakeland head coach, Brumett has also worked the sidelines for 11 years combined as an assistant coach, or student assistant for three different programs in the collegiate ranks. Prior to accepting his first collegiate head coaching stint at Lakeland, Brumett spent seven years as the top assistant at DePauw University. The Indiana native helped the Tigers to a 121-62 record, three Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships and an appearance in the 20012002 NCAA Division III Tournament’s Elite Eight. Brumett also spent time at the University of Southern Indiana during the 1998-1999 campaign, where he assisted former Tennessee head coach Bruce Pearl. The Eagles posted a 26-6 record and were the top-ranked team in NCAA Division II throughout the majority of the year. The Hanover College graduate got his coaching career started by serving as a student assistant coach for the Panthers when his playing career came to an end under HC’s legendary head coach Mike Beitzel. Brumett graduated from Hanover with a degree in physical education in 1998, before earning a master’s degree in recreation and sport management from Indiana State University in 2004. He and his wife, Steffanie, have a four-year old son, Leon Maxwell and a one-year old son, Marcus David.

The conference title came via a thrilling, 70-65, victory against the top-seeded Anderson Ravens in the championship game of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament. The win capped an eight-game win streak that sent the Jackets into the NCAA Tournament, where they fell, 75-71, against No. 8 UW-Whitewater in the opening round. Brumett has already coached 10 Yellow Jackets to All-HCAC honors in just three years, and saw Nick Sales named as the HCAC Player of the Year and an Honorable Mention AllAmerican following the 2009-2010 campaign. Brumett has also helped one of his athletes be named all-region in each of his three seasons at Defiance, as Anthony Pettaway accomplished the feat in 2009, with Sales doing so in 2010 and Logan Wolfrum following in 2011. Brumett came to Defiance after leading his Lakeland College squad to a 33-22 record and a 2008 Northern Athletics Conference Tournament Championship during his two-year stint with the Muskies. Brumett guided Lakeland to a 17-11 record during the 20072008 campaign and entered the NAC Tournament as the sixth

Sullivan is also beginning his first year as an assistant coach for the DC men’s golf program and will start his tenure as an academic support coordinator for Defiance College.

Sullivan came to DC after graduating from Denison in the spring of 2009 with a degree in economics and communication. During his time with the Big Red, Sullivan spent four years as a member of the men’s basketball team and played two seasons on the men’s soccer squad.

Along with his time on the court, Sullivan spent three years on the Denison Student-Athlete Advisory Council and was a member of the academic Dean’s List.

ASSISTANT COACH / SECOND YEAR (419) 783-2384 / CONLEY@DEFIANCE.EDU The 2011-2012 year will mark the second for Nate Conley as an assistant coach for the Defiance College men’s basketball program. Conley graduated from DC, after completing a four-year career on the planks with the Jackets. Conley earned a degree in mathematics in 2010 from Defiance and is beginning his coaching career with the Jackets, while working towards a master’s degree in education. During his time on staff, Conley will specialize his efforts with the post players, while also assisting with recruiting and working as the team’s primary strength and conditioning coordinator. Prior to making the transition to the coaching ranks, Conley rounded out

his playing career by starting all 29 games during the memorable 20092010 season for Defiance. The Fort Wayne, Ind., native set career-highs in nearly every category, while helping Defiance (23-6) to its highest win total in its NCAA Division III tenure, the 26th conference championship in program history and its first appearance in the NCAA D-III National Tournament since 2001. Conley was part of Defiance’s historic six-man senior class that set a program record with 77 career victories in the school’s Division III era, while also collecting a pair of HCAC Championships and one NCAA Tournament bid.

ASSISTANT COACH / FIRST YEAR (419) 783-2372 / NSALES@DEFIANCE.EDU Nick Sales returns to the DC men’s basketball program as an assistant coach in 2011-2012, after a spectacular four-year career for the Purple and Gold that saw him become the 23rd All-American in program history. Sales graduated from DC in 2010 with a degree in sport management and a minor in recreation and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in education, while also working in the retention office at Defiance College. During his four-year career with the Yellow Jackets, Sales etched his name throughout the record books, racking up 1,383 points, 833 rebounds, 79 blocks

and a program-record 60.5 career field goal percentage. The three-time AllHeartland Collegiate Athletic Conference performer was named HCAC Player of the Year, First-Team All-Midwest District and All-American as a senior, after leading the Jackets to a 23-6 campaign, the HCAC Championship and a berth into the NCAA Tournament. Sales began his coaching career during the 2010-2011 season at Albion. During his tenure as an assistant coach with the Britons, Sales served as the head coach of the junior varsity squad and handled recruiting and video exchange.

DC BASKETBALL 2011-2012 JACKETS HAVE AVERAGED 18 WINS PER SEASON OVER THE LAST FIVE YEARS

DEFIANCE, Ohio - One year after finishing in unfamiliar territory in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference standings and failing to qualify for the HCAC Tournament, which it won the previous season, the Defiance College men’s basketball program will enter the 2011-2012 campaign poised to erase the haunting memories of seven losses by five points or fewer and fully armed to make the climb back to the top of the league standings. Even with the disappointments and tough defeats offered to the Yellow Jackets during the 20102011 season, DC still ended the year with a 13-12 overall mark for its fifth-straight season with a winning record. The 13 victories also gave the Purple and Gold 90 wins over the past five seasons for an average total of 18 triumphs per season during that span. Experiencing that level of success and contending for HCAC championships on an annual basis is what fourth-year head coach, Kyle Brumett, now expects from his program each and every year, and that should be the situation that DC finds itself in once again during the 2011-2012 campaign. The Yellow Jackets are returning all five starters and nine lettermen from one year ago. That group accounted for 92.4 percent of the team’s scoring and roughly 85 percent of DC’s rebounds and minutes played last season. The

strong returning core will be motivated to get back to prominence in the HCAC and will be further fueled by the numerous impact additions scattered throughout a 14-man incoming class. Entering the new season free of lofty expectations from outside sources should free DC’s 23-man roster of the pressures it faced one year ago and allow the team to pay more attention to the details, while looking to improve as the season moves along with the hopes of earning that outside respect at the end of the season. A major factor in DC’s turnaround will most certainly come from an intentional effort by the coaching staff to bolster the team’s depth and address weaknesses on the defensive end of the court. Early indications point to the Jackets being successful on both of those fronts. The result should be a Purple and Gold unit that can go 14 deep during any game of the season and get back to the up-tempo attack on the both ends of the court that defined DC’s NCAA Tournament squad two years ago. Along with getting back to that fast-pace style, this year’s unit will share another strong similarity to the 2009-2010 team with a large senior class anchoring the roster. The group of Anthony Brown, Brandon Hoke, Justin Morris and Kevin and Kyle Tietje will be leaned on for leadership on and off the court throughout the season.

SEASON OUTLOOK That group enters its final season on campus with a resume including 54 wins in three seasons, a .620 clip in HCAC play, one HCAC Championship and one NCAA Tournament bid. If DC can reach its goals in 2011-2012, this five-man senior class will join the 2010 class as one of the most successful in Defiance’s Division III era. POINT GUARD Defiance has cornered the market on the top point guards in the HCAC in recent memory, as the Jackets have seen Mike Floyd or Logan Wolfrum lead the conference in assists in each of the past four seasons. A new name could join that list of league-leading playmakers, as incoming freshman Mason Roth is poised to take the reins of the up-tempo DC offense in 2011-2012. Roth’s arrival and the degree of his success with the Jackets could pay major dividends for the squad, relieving some of the pressure from Logan Wolfrum and making the league’s leading scorer from one year ago an even more dangerous threat. Roth averaged 4.5 assists per game as a senior at McComb High and will be joined on the depth chart by rising sophomore Leroy Lewis and the aforementioned Wolfrum. Lewis ended his first season on the planks at Defiance with 47 assists and saw the Jackets win nine-of-15 games in which he dished out at least two helpers. Wolfrum will likely still see plenty of time at the helm of the Yellow Jacket attack, after piling up an HCAC-leading 133 assists as a

sophomore and ranking 33rd in the nation in that category. SHOOTING GUARD / WING The Purple and Gold will boast plenty of depth on the wings, with seniors Anthony Brown and Brandon Hoke joining junior Logan Wolfrum and incoming freshmen Anthony Barnum, Drew Frizell and Travis Schomaeker. That top six on the depth chart provides Defiance with an array of weapons and strengths to choose from. The proven firepower of Brown and Wolfrum, each of whom were tabbed as All-HCAC performers one year ago, gives the Jackets the top scoring tandem in the league with over 36.4 points per game last season. Brown shot 36.6 percent from long distance and ranked fourth in the HCAC with 14.8 points per outing, while Wolfrum connected on 36.4 percent of his attempts from beyond the arc and ended with a conferenceleading 21.6 points per showing. Wolfrum went on to earn ThirdTeam All-Midwest Region honors, after topping all NCAA Division III freshmen and sophomores in scoring and ranking 18th overall in the nation. Wolfrum reached double figures in scoring in 24-of-25 games and poured in at least 20 points in 12 contests, en route to becoming the first player in Defiance College’s NCAA Division III era to reach 500 points, 100 assists and 100 rebounds in a single season. All-Ohio prep standouts, Frizell and Schomaeker, will give DC two more sharp-shooting

guards to attack defenses with, as Frizell scored 21.3 points per game as a senior at Smithville and Schomaeker netted 16.0 points per game in his final campaign at Ottawa-Glandorf. When the Jackets need to give the lineup a defensive boost, Hoke and Barnum will be called upon to turn up the pressure on opposing offenses. Hoke will be used as an on-ball defender, with Barnum’s 6-6 frame allowing him to be deployed anywhere on the court for Defiance as its primary stopper on the defensive end.

Kevin was especially pivotal to the success of DC one year ago, ranking fourth in the HCAC with 6.8 boards per night and averaging 8.8 points and 7.6 rebounds per game in 13 Yellow Jacket victories. The veterans will be pushed by a young crop of athletic forwards in the form of rising sophomores, Ryan Hicks and Brandon Ray, as well as the highly touted rookie, Jeff Hugan. Hicks wasted little time making his presence felt in his first season with the program, netting 9.1 points per game over his first 10 collegiate ballgames. The Port Clinton, Ohio, native went on to start 17-of-25 games for Defiance and ranked among the squad’s best all-around players with 8.3 points, 5.4 rebounds, 0.9 blocks and 0.9 steals per showing. Ray also worked his way into the mix later in his freshman season, getting the start in each of DC’s final two games and pulling down seven boards in 24 minutes of action. Hugan starred

SCHEDULE Anyone familiar with the Defiance College men’s basketball program will not be surprised to see yet another stacked schedule facing the Yellow Jackets in 2011-2012. DC will face top teams from the North Coast Athletic Conference, the Ohio Athletic Conference and the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association, all before getting into the meat of the grueling 18-game gauntlet offered by the highly competitive HCAC. The Jackets will open at Kalamazoo on November 15, before heading east to Wooster to take on the preseason No. 9 Scots and Ohio Wesleyan in the NCAC/HCAC Classic on November 18 and 19. A daunting home opener against Ohio Northern then awaits the Jackets on November 22, before opening league play at home against Anderson on November 30. Other key dates will include the 37th-Annual Purple and Gold Tournament on December 29 and 30, as well as the 188th installment of DC’s rivalry with Bluffton on February 15 inside the Karl. H. Weaner Community Center. The Yellow Jackets will look to improve over the course of their challenging 25-game slate, with the hopes of reaching the end with the 27th conference championship in program history and their second trip to the NCAA Tournament in the past three seasons.

FIRST-TEAM ALL-HCAC AWARDS

Defiance has qualified for the postseason 34 times with 30 of those appearances coming in the NAIA. From 1956 to 1961 Defiance lost its first 11 postseason games, starting with a loss to Steubenville College, 92-75, on February 29, 1956. DC’s first-ever postseason win came on March 6, 1962, when the Yellow Jackets defeated Ohio Northern, 74-73, in the District 22 Semifinals. During its time in the NAIA, DC won four District 22 Titles. The Yellow Jackets have had four postseason berths in the NCAA tournament but have yet to taste victory, falling in the first round to Otterbein in 1993 and 1999, to Calvin in 2001 and to UW-Whitewater in 2010. DC’s last postseason win came on March 3, 1990, via a 56-55 victory over Tiffin in the NAIA District 22 Semifinals.
