THIS IS DEFIANCE COLLEGE

Defiance College is a private liberal arts-based college providing outstanding academic programs and co-curricular activities for a student body of more than 1,000 students. Defiance College offers students the best of both worlds. In a small campus environment, students can have hands-on experiences in their field of study through quality internships, domestic and international travel, diverse cultural encounters, and distinctive service and research opportunities for personal and professional growth. The Princeton Review features Defiance College in Colleges with a Conscience: 81 Great Schools with Outstanding Community Involvement. Defiance College has been named for six-consecutive years to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for its commitment to community service, and for the past three years DC has been named a Military Friendly School for providing significant benefits and services to veterans. Defiance College was also selected by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching to receive its Community Engagement Classification. Defiance College offers students a world of opportunities to enhance their academic experience, from cultural visits in world-class cities across the continent, to international trips through the DC Global program, all of which open minds to new ideas and cultures and provide insights to help in competition for jobs and graduate school placement. The McMaster School for Advancing Humanity was created to provide opportunities for DC undergraduate students and faculty to more closely examine global issues and how they affect the human condition. Faculty and students conducted projects during the 2011-2012 year in Belize, Cambodia and Ghana. The School serves as the umbrella for the Service Leadership Program developing leadership communication, conflict resolution and cultural awareness, with the Carolyn M. Small Honors Program providing opportunities for students to participate in an honors curriculum and Project 701, a student-run nonprofit organization. Defiance College is also home of the Hench Autism Studies Program, an innovative, multi-faceted program designed to specifically address the late adolescent years and the transition of individuals with autism to adulthood. Student life is an important part of a Defiance College education. Activities include student government, musical and theater groups, religious organizations, intercultural organizations, honor societies, special interest groups, intramural athletics, and four Greek chapters including a service fraternity. As a national leader in the field of service learning and engagement, DC teaches students to take the knowledge they have gained and use it to change lives for the better in their communities, in distant villages and in their careers. Approximately 10,000 men and women across the globe claim Defiance College as their alma mater, and they excel in all walks of life.

THIS IS DEFIANCE WELCOME TO DEFIANCE

Dear Fellow Defiance College Fan:

The entire DC family joins me in welcoming you to our campus and to today’s game. There are many exciting things happening at Defiance College, and we certainly hope that you will take advantage of the opportunity to discover them. Over the past several years, we have seen significant increases in applications to the College, and those applications come from many parts of our nation and from other parts of the world as well. More and more students (and their parents) are realizing that there are very good reasons for them to travel to Defiance so that they can take advantage of the distinctive advantages of a DC education. We are proud that Defiance strives to offer students the best of all worlds. At DC, students get the individualized benefits of a student-centered small college but they also get a world of opportunities beyond. Let me explain. DC works to help students grow as people, providing individualized attention in the classroom, the guidance of Personal Success Plans, mentoring, and assistance geared to the challenges and potential of each student. DC provides this in a caring and supportive setting, enabling students to challenge themselves in and grow as individuals, leaders and citizens committed to service. At the same time, through a broad array of curricular and extra-curricular activities, DC opens to students an entire world of opportunities, helping students to develop a distinctive Defiance College Resume that will enable them to stand out in the job market and when applying to graduate schools. From a broad-based liberal arts education, to innovative programs that give students distinctive hands-on experience in their relevant fields, to international and domestic travel opportunities, to exposure to diverse cultural experiences, to the use of technologies to bring the world into the classroom, to the unique service and research opportunities, DC aims to give students the tools they need to become life-long learners and to make contributions to a changing world. While you are enjoying today’s events on campus, I hope you will have an opportunity to get to know some of our students individually. They are a wonderful group, with incredible potential. I very much enjoy being part of the DC family with them, as they bring excitement, energy, fresh perspectives, and commitment to service to name just a few of their many attributes. I also hope you will take advantage of the opportunity to tour some of the new additions to our campus, such as the George M. Smart Athletic Center. This 84,000 square foot facility provides tremendous opportunities for our students, with a 200-meter indoor track, tennis courts, basketball courts, volleyball courts, batting cages, fitness center, weight room, and much more. The George has already become a vital center of activity for our students and our campus. I want to thank our entire team, including players, coaches, trainers and staff, for the great work they do every day and the numerous ways in which they go above and beyond on a regular basis. I also want to thank our alumni, the parents of our athletes and the various organizations, all of whom donate generously to our athletic programs. Members of the Defiance College Board of Trustees, the Purple and Gold Club, and the Alumni Varsity ‘D’ all contribute immeasurably as well, both as individuals and through their organizations. And the incomparable faculty at DC, together with extremely dedicated administrators and staff, all combine to make DC the special place that it is. We are pleased to have you as our guest at DC today, and I hope that you will return to campus frequently for both sporting events and the numerous cultural and academic events we are so proud to host. Go Jackets!

Sincerely, Mark C. Gordon, President

IN THE COMMUNITY

DC BASKETBALL 2012-2013 74 WINNING SEASONS • 34 POSTSEASON APPEARANCES • 26 CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS • 23 ALL-AMERICANS

Defiance College has challenged students to defy the ordinary by exploring academic boundaries, taking on roles of civic responsibility and leadership, and becoming engaged on campus and in the community. All of this makes for an extraordinary college experience. Nowhere else will you find students committed to their communities like Defiance College, and nowhere else will you find student-athletes and coaches as immersed in service and engagement. During the 2011-2012 academic year, Defiance College student-athletes contributed more than 2,028 hours of service in their community and around the country. The men’s basketball team volunteered its time with projects at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Defiance, Special Olympics, and Leaping and Learning day care. 2012 marked the fifth-straight year for the Yellow Jackets to attend the Special Olympics State Bowling Tournament in Columbus, Ohio, where they encouraged the Special Olympic athletes during the competition and assisted with running the event. “Volunteering for the Special Olympics has been a great experience the past four years,” said senior Logan Wolfrum. “As a basketball team, we look forward to helping athletes succeed during the event. It is great to see the impact that our team can have on these individuals by volunteering our time to help such a great cause.” Junior Ryan Hicks echoed those sentiments by saying, “It is always nice to go down to Columbus to help out with the Special Olympics. Being able to help out and put smiles on the athletes’ faces is always a great feeling.” Many student-athletes at DC have taken active roles in leadership and service initiatives campus-wide. Such experiences give Defiance College students a greater awareness of a diverse world and its needs, as well as the leadership skills to create positive change. Defiance College is featured for excellence in blending academics with community work by The Princeton Review in its Colleges with a Conscience: 81 Great Schools with Outstanding Community Involvement. Defiance is included in the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for its commitment to community service.

ATHLETICS FACILITIES

SMART ATHLETIC CENTER

Yellow Jacket basketball utilizes several facilities on the Defiance College campus. Whether the team is competing against a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference rival at the newly refurbished Karl H. Weaner Community Center, or eating a pregame meal at the Serrick Campus Center, Defiance College coaches, administration and staff are devoted to providing the squad with the best facilities possible. During the past year the Weaner Center was updated with new bleachers, a new paint scheme on the court and new banners, which all helped to improve on what was already a classic atmosphere for college basketball. DC also opened an 84,000 square-foot field house in February of 2012. The multi-purpose floor provides additional year-round training areas for all 22 varsity athletic programs at Defiance College. The George also boasts a full athletic training room, expanded fitness and free-weight areas and two full-length batting cages. All of these facilities are available for use by Defiance College Yellow Jacket student-athletes.

DEFIANCE COLLEGE ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHY

The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program serves as a window of opportunity for all prospective student-athletes to experience an extra-curricular educational and physical activity that fits within the general mission of the college to develop the whole person. The student-athlete will be exposed to a variety of opportunities for personal growth in the areas of intellectual, emotional, spiritual, social and physical dimensions as it relates to each individual and their respective sport. The student-athlete, as a team member, will be involved in a learning community that will strive for excellence both on the field and in the classroom while maintaining a dignity of fair play and continued emphasis on positive sportsmanship. Jointly, the coaches and student-athletes will build an engaged environment that will accentuate the learning process not only within the competitive arena but also within the college campus and the community as a whole. An emphasis will be placed on

12

the impact of participation and personal growth, rather than scoreboard success, in a balanced sports program where equitable sports opportunities will be available to both genders. The student-athletes of Defiance College choose to participate in the intercollegiate athletics program for a variety of reasons but none of which includes athletic related financial aid, or the promise of financial security through professional athletic stardom. Through participation in the intercollegiate athletics program, a studentathlete continues to compete for the love of sport, the thrill of competition and the fulfillment of countless intrinsic values. The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program strives to be an integral and cohesive part of the collegiate learning and living process, appropriately well suited to co-exist with the Defiance College mission statement … to know, to lead, to serve and to understand.

COACHING STAFF

KYLE BRUMETT

HEAD COACH / FIFTH YEAR (419) 783-2346 / KBRUMETT@DEFIANCE.EDU Kyle Brumett is in his fifth season as the head coach for the men’s basketball program at Defiance College, after taking over the post on May 19, 2008. Brumett also took on added responsibilities as an assistant athletics director in the spring of 2012. The first four years of Brumett’s tenure with the Purple and Gold have been rich with accomplishments and accolades for the program that has now went six-straight seasons without suffering a losing record. Brumett boasts a 67-40 overall record with the Yellow Jackets and his .626 winning percentage at Defiance marks the third-highest career winning percentage of any coach in program history with at least 50 victories. His DC squads have been especially tough to beat on the home planks, where Defiance is 39-11 inside the Karl H. Weaner Community Center during the Brumett era. In 2009-2010 Brumett guided Defiance to one of the finest seasons in school history, as its 23-6 clip gave the Purple and Gold its best singleseason record and highest win total of the program’s NCAA Division III era. The Jackets got off to their best start since 1973 and rolled to the program’s 1,300th victory in school history, 15th 20-win season, 26th conference championship, fourth NCAA Tournament appearance and 34th postseason berth.

Brumett guided Lakeland to a 17-11 record during the 2007-2008 campaign and entered the NAC Tournament as the sixth seed, before logging three-straight road victories over the top-three teams in the league to claim the title. The impressive tournament run concluded with an 82-77 overtime victory over the top-seeded Aurora squad. Along with his time as the Lakeland head coach, Brumett has also worked the sidelines for 11 years combined as an assistant coach, or student assistant for three different programs in the collegiate ranks. Prior to accepting his first collegiate head coaching stint at Lakeland, Brumett spent seven years as the top assistant at DePauw University. The Indiana native helped the Tigers to a 121-62 record, three Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships and an appearance in the 20012002 NCAA Division III Tournament’s Elite Eight. Brumett also spent time at the University of Southern Indiana during the 1998-1999 campaign, where he assisted former Tennessee head coach Bruce Pearl. The Eagles posted a 26-6 record and were the top-ranked team in NCAA Division II throughout the majority of the year. The Hanover College graduate got his coaching career started by serving as a student assistant coach for the Panthers when his playing career came to an end under HC’s legendary head coach Mike Beitzel. Brumett graduated from Hanover with a degree in physical education in 1998, before earning a master’s degree in recreation and sport management from Indiana State University in 2004. He and his wife, Steffanie, have a five-year old son, Leon Maxwell and a two-year old son, Marcus David.

The conference title came via a thrilling, 70-65, victory against the top-seeded Anderson Ravens in the championship game of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament. The win capped an eight-game win streak that sent the Yellow Jackets into the NCAA Tournament, where they fell, 75-71, against the No. 8 UW-Whitewater Warhawks in the opening round. Brumett has already coached 12 Yellow Jackets to All-HCAC honors in his four years, and saw Nick Sales named as the HCAC Player of the Year and an Honorable Mention All-American following the 2009-2010 campaign. Brumett also helped one of his athletes be named all-region in each of his first three seasons at Defiance, as Anthony Pettaway accomplished the feat in 2009, with Sales doing so in 2010 and Logan Wolfrum following in 2011.

16

Brumett came to Defiance after leading his Lakeland College squad to a 33-22 record and a 2008 Northern Athletics Conference Tournament Championship during his two-year stint with the Muskies.

PAT SULLIVAN

ASSISTANT COACH / FOURTH YEAR (419) 783-2554 / PSULLIVAN@DEFIANCE.EDU The 2012-2013 season will be the fourth for Pat Sullivan as a member of the Yellow Jacket coaching staff. Sullivan is also in his second year as an assistant coach for the DC men’s golf program and as an academic support coordinator for Defiance College. Sullivan came to DC after graduating from Denison in the spring of 2009 with a degree in economics and communication. During his time with the Big Red, Sullivan spent four years as a member of the men’s basketball team. The Loveland, Ohio, native excelled for Denison as a three-year starter at the point guard position. Sullivan led Denison in points and assists en route to being named Honorable Mention All-North Coast Athletic Confer-

ence as a junior, before starting all 26 games as a team captain during his senior campaign. Along with his time on the basketball court, Sullivan spent three years on the Denison Student-Athlete Advisory Council and was a member of the academic Dean’s List. Since joining the Jackets in 2009-2010, Sullivan earned a master’s degree in education and has helped guide the DC men’s basketball program to a 49-31 record, an appearance in the 2010 NCAA National Tournament and the 26th conference championship on the hardwood for Defiance.

NATE CONLEY

ASSISTANT COACH / THIRD YEAR (419) 783-2384 / NCONLEY@DEFIANCE.EDU The 2012-2013 year will mark the third for Nate Conley as a graduate assistant coach for the Defiance College men’s basketball program. Conley graduated from DC, after completing a four-year career on the planks with the Purple and Gold. Conley earned a degree in mathematics in May of 2010 from Defiance, before beginning his coaching career with the Jackets, while working towards master’s degrees in education and business administration. During his time on staff at DC, Conley has specialized his coaching efforts with the post players, while also assisting with recruiting and working as the primary strength and conditioning coordinator for the men’s basketball program.

Conley rounded out his playing career by starting all 29 games during the memorable 2009-2010 season for DC. The Fort Wayne, Ind., native set career-highs in nearly every category, while helping Defiance (23-6) to its highest win total in its NCAA Division III tenure, the 26th conference championship in program history and its first appearance in the NCAA D-III National Tournament since 2001. Conley was part of Defiance’s historic six-man senior class that set a program record with 77 career victories in the school’s Division III era, while also collecting a pair of HCAC Championships and one NCAA Tournament bid.

NICK SALES

ASSISTANT COACH / SECOND YEAR (419) 783-2373 / NSALES@DEFIANCE.EDU Nick Sales returned to the DC program as an assistant coach in 20112012, after a spectacular four-year career on the hardwood for the Purple and Gold that saw him become the 23rd All-American in program history. Sales graduated from DC in 2010 with a degree in sport management and a minor in recreation and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in education, while also working in the retention office at Defiance College. During his four-year career, Sales etched his name throughout the record books at Defiance, racking up 1,383 points, 833 rebounds, 79 blocks and

a program-record 60.5 career field goal percentage. The three-time AllHeartland Collegiate Athletic Conference performer was named HCAC Player of the Year, First-Team All-Midwest District and All-American as a senior, after leading DC to a 23-6 campaign, the HCAC Championship and a berth into the NCAA Tournament. Sales began his coaching career in 2010-2011 on staff at Albion. During his tenure with the Britons, Sales served as the head coach of the junior varsity squad and handled recruiting and video exchange responsibilities.

DEFIANCE, Ohio - As the Defiance College men’s basketball team sets to embark on the 109th year and the 104th season of its rich existence, the goals remain the same for another talented Yellow Jacket roster during the 2012-2013 campaign. Despite losing five seniors and 10 lettermen from the 13-13 squad from one year ago and having only two players on the current roster with more than one year of experience with the Purple and Gold, Defiance will once again be expected to find itself near the top of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference standings when all the dust of a tremendously competitive league schedule has settled at the end of February. The Jackets, who enter the 2012-2013 season as one of the youngest squads in the conference, were still selected fourth in the HCAC Preseason Poll by the league’s head coaches. Sights will be set on surpassing those expectations however, as Defiance will not only look to rack up its seventh-straight season without enduring a losing record, but it will look to return to the HCAC

Tournament with the hopes of securing the 27th conference championship in program history and the second of head coach Kyle Brumett’s five-year tenure at the helm of the program. In order to accomplish those tasks, the youth-filled roster will need to quickly harvest its promising potential into on-court performance from its underclassmen. If the youth can successfully follow and compliment the proven skills of senior HCAC Player-ofthe-Year candidate, Logan Wolfrum, the Yellow Jackets will be on the right track. Junior Ryan Hicks and a battletested sophomore class led by the trio of Mason Roth, Travis Schomaeker and Drew Frizell will also be expected to mature into leadership roles, as Defiance looks to return to the level of competitiveness and grit that it brought to the court during its HCAC Championship run in 2010. One key to doing that will be for DC to show dramatic improvement on the glass, as well as on interior defense. Those areas of emphasis were potentially ad-

dressed by the additions of four post players standing at, or above six-feet, six-inches tall. The six-foot, nine-inch freshman center, Wade Wooley, highlights that group and is joined by fellow rookies Hosie Smith and Kris Carius, along with incoming sophomore Bernard Edwards. The group will bring much needed size and strength to the Defiance lineup and should allow DC’s stable of talented guards to do even further damage on the perimeter. POINT GUARD A large part of that perimeter production will come from the point guard position once again for Defiance, as Logan Wolfrum is expected to take over the ballhandling duties during his final campaign on the planks for the Purple and Gold. Running the offense will not be new territory for the likely four-time All-HCAC performer, as Wolfrum also ran the point during his first two seasons. During 2010-2011, Wolfrum led the HCAC and ranked 33rd in the nation with 5.3 assists per contest, while pouring in a conference-leading 21.6 points per outing. The Yellow Jackets will be looking for that level of

production once again from their most efficient offensive weapon. If Wolfrum can match those numbers, he will leave the program as one of the most productive players in DC’s NCAA Division III era. Along with being just 397 points shy of becoming the program’s all-time leading scorer at the D-III level, the Ayersville High product should climb into third on DC’s all-time assists list and leave his mark on a host of other categories in the Defiance College record books. Wolfrum will have plenty of help at the position if needed, as last season’s starting point guard, Mason Roth, returns for a second year and freshman Jordan Fair adds further depth. Roth made a run at HCAC Freshman-of-the-Year status last season, netting 10.4 points and 2.8 assists per outing, while Fair brings the athleticism and toughness needed to excel on the defensive side of the ball. SHOOTING GUARD / WING With the transition of Wolfrum back to the top of the offense and the graduation of All-HCAC performer Anthony Brown, Defiance will turn to the aforementioned Mason Roth, along with fellow sophomores Travis Schomaeker

and Drew Frizell to provide additional scoring on the perimeter. The trio of sharp-shooters proved more than capable last season by combining for a 36.5-percent clip from beyond the arc and 18.6 points per night. They should easily improve on those numbers with another year of experience and an increased amount of playing time on the horizon in 2012-2013. The shot-making abilities of Roth, Schomaeker and Frizell will be yet another critical part of DC’s success this season, as the consistent threat of a crippling outside attack will open things up for the slashing style of Wolfrum, as well as newcomer Bernard Edwards. The sophomore wing player can do damage on the perimeter, as well as in the paint and his combination of size and athleticism should create matchup issues for opposing defenses all year long. Another newcomer could see time and add further depth at the guard position, as red-shirt freshman, Eli Robertson, will be given an extended look.

Wooley and Hosie Smith in seeing the majority of court time. Hicks added strength during the offseason and is expected to return to a more natural position further from the basket due to the influx of size around him that will handle those duties. The move should lead to an increase in production from Hicks that could surpass his freshman line from two years ago of 8.3 points and 5.4 rebounds a night to go with 48.0-percent shooting from the field. With Hicks sliding back into a forward slot, the center position will be assumed by Wooley, who exhibits good hands and a soft touch for his size and will be asked to attack the glass for the Yellow Jackets. Once Woodley adjusts to the speed of the collegiate game, the former Wauseon High standout should also become a force on the offensive end for Defiance. Wooley and Hicks will be backed up by Smith, who should be Coach Brumett’s first option off the bench. Smith boasts the strength and quickness to excel in rebounding and will be asked to embrace that role during his first collegiate season. Edwards could further bolster the Jackets on the interior, should he be moved into the paint to exploit matchup issues, while senior Marcus Dunlap, sophomore Kent Tietje and freshman Kris Carius could all work their way into the rotation at some point during the 2012-2013 campaign.

POST While Defiance will feature a familiar look on the perimeter, the paint will be full of new faces for a revamped group of post players in 2012-2013. The lone returning regular will be junior Ryan Hicks, who will be joined with Bernard Edwards and incoming rookies Wade

SCHOMAEKER SCHEDULE The 2012-2013 season brings yet another challenging schedule to the Yellow Jackets, as Coach Brumett has once again loaded the slate with a string of exciting tests. DC passed the first challenge, hanging with NCAA Division I Oakland in a preseason exhibition clash, before falling, 90-77, to the Golden Grizzlies. The Jackets will hope to carry that strong showing over into the regular season when they open against No. 22 Ohio Wesleyan on November 16 at the Marietta Tip-Off Tournament. The Battling Bishops are one of three teams on the 2012-2013 docket in the D3hoops.com Preseason National Poll, with No. 16 Transylvania and No. 30 Rose-Hulman representing the HCAC on that list. Other key dates on the schedule for Defiance will be November 20 at regional rival Ohio Northern and the first home contest inside the newly renovated Karl H. Weaner Community Center against Alma on November 28. DC will then open the grueling 18-game HCAC schedule on December 1 at RoseHulman, before hosting the 38thAnnual Purple and Gold Tournament on December 29 and 30, with Finlandia, Adrian and Mount Union coming to town. Defiance will also look to fill the Hive when it welcomes Bluffton on January 2 in the 189th installment of the longtime rivalry.

POSTSEASON HISTORY

FIRST-TEAM ALL-HCAC AWARDS

Defiance has qualified for the postseason 34 times with 30 of those appearances coming in the NAIA. From 1956 to 1961 Defiance lost its first 11 postseason games, starting with a loss to Steubenville College, 92-75, on February 29, 1956. DC’s first-ever postseason win came on March 6, 1962, when the Yellow Jackets defeated Ohio Northern, 74-73, in the District 22 Semifinals. During its time in the NAIA, DC won four District 22 Titles.
