WELCOME TO DEFIANCE Dear Fellow Defiance College Fan,

The entire Defiance College family joins me in welcoming you to our campus and to today’s game. We hope that while you are with us today, you will have the opportunity to explore as many parts of Defiance College as possible and that you will share in the excitement about DC continuing to grow around the nation. This year’s entering freshman class is the largest in recent memory. During the past year, we have seen significant increases in applications, with particular increases in applications from outside Ohio, as we become more and more a college with national reach and scope. In fact, this past year, more than half of the students applying to DC came from outside Ohio, representing 48 states and territories. Why are students traveling from all around the United States (and other countries as well) to attend DC? I think it is because Defiance College offers students the best of all worlds. At DC, students get the individualized benefits of a student-centered, small college, but they also get a world of opportunities beyond. Let me explain. As a small college, DC works to help students grow as people, providing individualized attention in the classroom, the guidance of Personal Success Plans, mentoring, and assistance geared to the challenges and potential of each student. DC provides this in a rural, caring, and supportive setting, thereby enabling students to challenge themselves in new ways and grow as individuals, leaders, and citizens committed to service. At the same time, however, through a broad array of curricular and extra-curricular activities, DC opens to students an entire world of opportunities, helping students to develop a distinctive Defiance College Resume that will enable them to stand out in the job market and when applying to graduate schools. From a broad-based liberal arts education; innovative programs that link what goes on in the classroom with the realities of the outside world and give students distinctive hands-on experience in their relevant fields; international and domestic travel opportunities; exposure to diverse cultural experiences; the use of technologies to bring the world into the classroom in Defiance; and unique service and research opportunities, DC aims to give students the tools they need to become life-long learners and to make distinctive contributions to a changing world. While you are enjoying today’s events on campus, I hope you will have an opportunity to get to know some of our students individually. They are a wonderful group, with incredible potential. I very much enjoy being part of the Defiance College family with them, as they bring excitement, energy, fresh perspectives, and commitment to service – to name just a few of their many attributes. I want to thank our entire team, including players, coaches, trainers and staff, for the great work they do every day and the numerous ways in which they go “above and beyond” on a regular basis. I also want to thank our alumni, the parents of our athletes, and the various organizations, all of whom donate generously to our athletic programs. Members of the Defiance College Board of Trustees, the Purple and Gold Club, and the Alumni Varsity ‘D” all contribute immeasurably as well, both as individuals and through their organizations. And the incomparable faculty at DC, together with extremely dedicated administrators and staff, all combine to make DC the special place that it is. We are pleased to have you as our guest at DC today, and I hope that you will return to campus frequently for both sporting events and the numerous cultural and academic events we are so proud to host. Go Jackets! Sincerely,

Mark C. Gordon, President

THIS IS DEFIANCE COLLEGE

Defiance College, founded in 1850, is a private liberal arts college affiliated with the United Church of Christ, providing outstanding academic programs and co-curricular activities for a student body of nearly 1,100 students. Building on a strong foundation of more than a century of educating citizens for lives of leadership and service, Defiance College provides opportunities for its students to make a meaningful impact on society in the twenty-first century with an educational experience of engagement. The Princeton Review features Defiance College in Colleges with a Conscience: 81 Great Schools with Outstanding Community Involvement. Defiance College has been named for five-consecutive years to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for its commitment to community service, and for the past two years DC has been named a Military Friendly School for providing significant benefits and services to veterans. Defiance College is also one of 119 U.S. colleges and universities selected by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching to receive its Community Engagement Classification. The McMaster School for Advancing Humanity was created to provide opportunities for DC undergraduate students and faculty to more closely examine global issues and how they affect the human condition. Faculty and students conducted projects during the 2010-2011 year in Belize, Cambodia and New Orleans. The School serves as the umbrella for the Service Leadership Program developing leadership communication, conflict resolution and cultural awareness; the Carolyn M. Small Honors Program providing opportunities for students to participate in an honors curriculum; and Project 701, a student-run nonprofit organization. Defiance College offers students a world of opportunities to enhance their academic experience, from cultural visits in world-class cities across the continent, to international trips through the DC Global program, all of which open minds to new ideas and cultures and provide insights to help in competition for jobs and graduate school placement. Defiance College is also home of the Hench Autism Studies Program, an innovative, multi-faceted program designed to specifically address the late adolescent years and the transition of individuals with autism to adulthood. Student life is an important part of a Defiance College education. Activities include student government, musical and theater groups, religious organizations, intercultural organizations, honor societies, special interest groups, intramural athletics, and four Greek chapters including a service fraternity. As a national leader in the field of service learning and engagement, DC teaches students to take the knowledge they have gained and use it to change lives for the better – in their communities, in distant villages, and in their careers. Approximately 10,000 men and women across the globe claim Defiance College as their alma mater, and they excel in all walks of life.

DC ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHY

The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program serves as a window of opportunity for all prospective student-athletes to experience an extra-curricular educational and physical activity that fits within the general mission of the college to develop the whole person. The student-athlete will be exposed to a variety of opportunities for personal growth in the areas of intellectual, emotional, spiritual, social and physical dimensions as it relates to each individual and their respective sport. The student-athlete, as a team member, will be involved in a learning community that will strive for excellence both on the field and in the classroom while maintaining a dignity of fair play and continued emphasis on positive sportsmanship. Jointly, the coaches and student-athletes will build an engaged environment that will accentuate the learning process not only within the competitive arena but also within the college campus and the community as a whole. An emphasis will be placed on the impact of participation and personal growth, rather than scoreboard success, in a balanced sports program where equitable sports opportunities will be available to both genders. The student-athletes of Defiance College choose to participate in the intercollegiate athletics program for a variety of reasons but none of which includes athletic related financial aid or the promise of financial security through professional athletic stardom. Through participation in the intercollegiate athletics program, a student-athlete continues to compete for the love of sport, the thrill of competition and the fulfillment of countless intrinsic values. The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program strives to be an integral and cohesive part of the collegiate learning and living process, appropriately well suited to co-exist with the Defiance College mission statement…to know, to lead, to serve and to understand.

JACKETS IN THE COMMUNITY

Defiance College has challenged students to defy the ordinary – to explore academic boundaries, to take on roles of civic responsibility and leadership, and to become engaged on campus and in the community. All of this makes for an extraordinary college experience. Nowhere else will you find students committed to their communities like Defiance College, and nowhere else will you find student-athletes and coaches as immersed in service and engagement. Members of all Defiance men’s and women’s intercollegiate sports teams participate in service projects. During the 2010-11 academic year, Defiance College student-athletes contributed more than 2,940 hours of service in their community and around the country. The DC softball team participates in numerous service projects each year. Many student-athletes at DC have taken leadership roles in service initiatives campus- and community-wide, and several have also received scholarships for international projects. Katelyn Samples, Jessie Arnold, Katie Miller, Aubrie Ridinger, Katie Grubbs and Brianna Ferguson are members of the softball team who are Service Leaders for the current academic year. The Service Leader program rewards previous community service and develops students’ leadership skills. The softball team volunteered last fall at the Special Olympics Regional Softball Tournament. It marked the fourth straight year that members of the squad spent a day working with Special Olympic athletes in a variety of skills stations including fielding, hitting, baserunning and throwing. The team escorted athletes through the stations and awarded medals to participants. The team continued its service to the community over the Halloween weekend by participating in the annual Defiance Halloween Parade. The team partnered with the Fort Defiance Humane Society in efforts to promote and increase the adoption of animals in northwest Ohio. Each member of the team walked a shelter dog in the parade in hopes that she would help the chances of the dog being adopted. The team gave a helping hand in the community as well when they traveled to Toledo to volunteer with the annual Make-A-Wish Holiday Party. For the fifth consecutive year, the Yellow Jacket softball

JACKETS IN THE COMMUNITY program partnered with the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Northwest Ohio by participating in their annual Holiday Party. “This service project really opened my eyes to just how fortunate I am,” said freshman catcher Bri Ferguson. “The kids that we got to work with were so happy and fun, and I really genuinely enjoyed spending my day playing games with the kids and their families!” The softball team was in charge of planning all of the games and events for the kids that were at the party and helping the participants play each game. Also at the party, the Yellow Jacket softball players painted faces and helped with the craft tables, making ornaments, icing cookies, and sending letters to Santa. “While I am sad this is my last Make-A-Wish party, I am so happy that I have gotten the chance to help out with such a great organization,” said senior pitcher Lisa Brophy. “These kids have really touched my life and I am glad that I got to make an impact on them.” Such experiences give Defiance College students a greater awareness of a diverse world and its needs as well as the leadership skills to create positive change.

SOFTBALL COACHING STAFF HEAD COACH

Seventh Season University of Mount Union (‘01)

HC

JODIE HOLAVA

After just six seasons as the head coach of the Defiance College softball program, Jodie Holava is nearing the most wins in school history with a 144-108 overall record. Holava’s .571 winning percentage is the best by any coach in program history, and the team has been even more impressive under her guidance against conference opponents, boasting a .667 winning percentage. The Yellow Jackets have won three conference championships in six years during Holava’s tenure and finished among the top-three in the final standings in four out of six years. During the 2011 season the Jackets made it to the conference tourney championship game. The team finished fourth overall in conference play and had five of its members named All-HCAC performers. Defiance also produced three HCAC Players-of-the-Week, five NFCA All-Academic Scholars and four HCAC AllAcademic members. Holava joined the DC family in 2006, after spending the 2004-2005 softball season at Notre Dame College of Ohio as an assistant coach. With her help, the Falcons finished the season 23-17, marking the best record in school history. They finished 10-4 in the American Mideast Conference and reached the Region IX Tournament for the first time in school history Prior to her stint at Notre Dame College of Ohio, Holava coached the Northcoast Spirit, a traveling softball team sanctioned by the National Softball Association. The Spirit went to the NSA World Series each year under Holava’s direction. Holava earned her bachelor’s degree from Mount Union College in athletic training, with a minor in health and secondary education. A four-year starter for the Raiders, Holava was a two-time First Team All-Ohio Athletic Conference honoree and twice named to the All-Central Region First Team.

AC KAYCEE BUTT GRADUATE ASSISTANT First Season Defiance College (‘11)

Kaycee Butt will begin her stint as an assistant coach for the Defiance College softball program for the 2012 season after concluding her playing career with the Yellow Jackets in 2011. Butt graduated from Defiance College in May with a degree in sport management and rounded out her playing career on the softball field with the Purple and Gold. During her playing time with the Jackets, Butt helped the team to Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament Championships in 2008 and 2009 and earned All-HCAC accolades during her senior campaign in 2011. Butt also served on the Defiance College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for three years, was a four-time recipient of the DC Achievement Scholarship Award and spent four years with the school’s Citizen Leader Scholarship Program, logging over 200 hours of community service per year. The outstanding work on the field, in the classroom and in the community does not overshadow Butt’s coaching background. The Hilliard, Ohio native gained valuable experience while assisting with a variety of softball camps and fall leagues hosted by Defiance College over the past four years. Along with her coaching duties, Butt will work towards a master’s degree in education from Defiance College.

2012 SEASON OUTLOOK The Yellow Jackets will rely on leadership from their upperclassmen to help usher in the talented newcomers. DC lost five starters from last season’s team, but it has reloaded with a wealth of young talent.

PITCHERS: Senior Lisa Brophy is the veteran of the pitching staff. Brophy has made seven appearances in the last two seasons. During the 2011 campaign Brophy pitched in three games allowing no earned runs. The senior’s experience will be counted on to help bring along the young Yellow Jacket pitching staff. Returning for her sophomore campaign, Kailea Holbrook led the team in all major pitching categories for returning Defiance College pitchers. Holbrook started five games for the Yellow Jackets a season ago and made 13 total appearances during the 2011 season. The sophomore was named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference pitcher of the week back on March 6, 2011 for a dominant performance against Alverno College. Joining Brophy and Holbrook are freshmen Lauren Dicke and Katie Grubbs. Both Dicke

HOLBROOK 12

and Grubbs will be counted on throughout the year to make a big impact on the season. The freshmen pitchers will be a key to the Yellow Jackets’ season. CATHERS: Defiance will have a new face behind the dish for the first time in over four years. Last year’s starting catcher, Mallory Faling, started every game for the Yellow Jackets since her freshman season. The Purple and Gold have a number of viable candidates to fill the void at the catcher position. There are six players on the roster that are listed as full-time or part-time catchers. Sophomore Hallie Sullivan and junior Ashley Switzer are the catchers on the roster from last season. Freshmen Sara Ankeney, Allison Jamiot, Brianna Ferguson, and Morgan Williamson all have previous experience at catcher as well. Whichever player earns the starting nod will be counted on heavily to guide the young pitching staff. The catcher position could very well be the difference in how successful the Yellow Jackets are in the 2012 season.

FERRALL

2012 SEASON OUTLOOK FIRST BASE: Along with the catcher position, first base is another position that has more questions than answers as the season begins. The Yellow Jackets lost their previous starter, Kaycee Butt, to graduation and will look to fill the void of the 2011 HCAC All-First Team performer. Likely candidates to take over at first base are newcomers Jordan Sawmiller or Jessie Arnold. Another player who could see some time at first base is pitcher Kailea Holbrook, who also has some experience at the corner. MIDDLE INFIELD: The second base position returns Macy Ferrall, last season’s starter. The sophomore started 40 games for Defiance as a freshman, 38 of which were at second base. Ferrall batted .283 on the season, including a percentage of .333 during HCAC action. The sophomore also recorded the third most assists on the team for the Yellow Jackets with 57. Ferrall will be looked to for guidance and leadership with such a young squad. Other Yellow Jacket players who could see action at second base are senior Jessica Mandula and sophomore Maggie Neanen. DC will have to fill the shortstop position after losing Tasha Stucke to graduation. One possible candidate is freshman Tori Plummer,

ESQUIBEL

who has already received recognition from the HCAC coaches. Plummer was voted a player to watch for the upcoming 2012 campaign. THIRD BASE: Stephanie Esquibel started every game at third base last season as a freshman. Esquibel finished the season with 21 hits and 12 runs batted in. The sophomore also totaled the second-most assists of anyone on the team for Defiance with 72. The Jackets will count on Esquibel to improve on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball in the 2012 season. OUTFIELD: The outfield returns the most experience and leadership of any position for DC. Junior Katie Miller and senior Aubrie Ridinger combined for 70 starts last season. Both were named HCAC Players-to-Watch by the conference coaches. Miller is coming off a great season of conference play as the junior earned First-Team All-HCAC accolades. Ridinger batted .319 during HCAC play and sported a perfect fielding percentage. There are multiple candidates to fill the final outfield spot. Seniors Elizabeth Huffman and Katelyn Samples are candidates for the position.
