WELCOME TO DEFIANCE Defiance College, founded in 1850, is a private liberal arts college affiliated with the United Church of Christ, serving approximately 1,100 students. Building on a strong foundation of more than a century of educating citizens for lives of leadership and service, Defiance College provides opportunities for its students to make a meaningful impact on society in the twentyfirst century with an educational experience of engagement. Defiance’s spirit of service through leadership sets us apart. The Princeton Review features Defiance College in Colleges with a Conscience: 81 Great Schools with Outstanding Community Involvement. Defiance College has been named for five-consecutive years to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for its commitment to community service, and for the past two years, DC has been named a Military Friendly School for providing significant benefits and services to veterans. Defiance College is also one of 119 U.S. colleges and universities selected by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching to receive its 2008 Community Engagement Classification. The McMaster School for Advancing Humanity was created to provide opportunities for DC undergraduate students and faculty to more closely examine global issues and how they affect the human condition. Faculty and students conducted projects during the 2010-2011 year in Belize, Cambodia and New Orleans. The School serves as the umbrella for the Service Leadership Program developing leadership communication, conflict resolution and cultural awareness; the Carolyn M. Small Honors Program providing opportunities for students to participate in an honors curriculum; Project 701, a student-run nonprofit organization; and study abroad programs. Defiance College is also home of the Hench Autism Studies Program, an innovative, multi-faceted program designed to specifically address the late adolescent years and the transition of individuals with autism to adulthood. Student life is an important part of a Defiance College education. Activities include student government, musical and theater groups, religious organizations, the student newspaper, intercultural organizations, honor societies, special interest groups, intramural athletics, and four Greek chapters including a service fraternity. As a national leader in the field of service learning and engagement, DC teaches students to take the knowledge they have gained and use it to change lives for the better in their communities, in distant villages, and in their careers.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Fellow Defiance College Fan, The entire Defiance College family joins me in welcoming you to our campus and to today’s game. We hope that while you are with us today, you will have the opportunity to explore as many parts of Defiance College as possible and that you will share in the excitement about DC continuing to grow around the nation. This year’s entering freshman class is the largest in recent memory. During the past year, we have seen significant increases in applications, with particular increases in applications from outside Ohio, as we become more and more a college with national reach and scope. In fact, this past year, more than half of the students applying to DC came from outside Ohio, representing 48 states and territories. Why are students traveling from all around the United States (and other countries as well) to attend DC? I think it is because Defiance College offers students the best of all worlds. At DC, students get the individualized benefits of a studentcentered, small college, but they also get a world of opportunities beyond. Let me explain. As a small college, DC works to help students grow as people, providing individualized attention in the classroom, the guidance of Personal Success Plans, mentoring, and assistance geared to the challenges and potential of each student. DC provides this in a rural, caring, and supportive setting, thereby enabling students to challenge themselves in new ways and grow as individuals, leaders, and citizens committed to service. At the same time, however, through a broad array of curricular and extra-curricular activities, DC opens to students an entire world of opportunities, helping students to develop a distinctive Defiance College Resume that will enable them to stand out in the job market and when applying to graduate schools. From a broad-based liberal arts education; innovative programs that link what goes on in the classroom with the realities of the outside world and give students distinctive hands-on experience in their relevant fields; international and domestic travel opportunities; exposure to diverse cultural experiences; the use of technologies to bring the world into the classroom in Defiance; and unique service and research opportunities, DC aims to give students the tools they need to become life-long learners and to make distinctive contributions to a changing world. While you are enjoying today’s events on campus, I hope you will have an opportunity to get to know some of our students individually. They are a wonderful group, with incredible potential. I very much enjoy being part of the Defiance College family with them, as they bring excitement, energy, fresh perspectives, and commitment to service – to name just a few of their many attributes. I want to thank our entire team, including players, coaches, trainers and staff, for the great work they do every day and the numerous ways in which they go “above and beyond” on a regular basis. I also want to thank our alumni, the parents of our athletes, and the various organizations, all of whom donate generously to our athletic programs. Members of the Defiance College Board of Trustees, the Purple and Gold Club, and the Alumni Varsity ‘D” all contribute immeasurably as well, both as individuals and through their organizations. And the incomparable faculty at DC, together with extremely dedicated administrators and staff, all combine to make DC the special place that it is. We are pleased to have you as our guest at DC today, and I hope that you will return to campus frequently for both sporting events and the numerous cultural and academic events we are so proud to host. Go Jackets! Sincerely, Mark C. Gordon, President

IN THE COMMUNITY

Defiance College has challenged students to defy the ordinary – to explore academic boundaries, to take on roles of civic responsibility and leadership, and to become engaged on campus and in the community. All of this makes for an extraordinary college experience. Nowhere else will you find students committed to their communities like Defiance College, and nowhere else will you find student-athletes and coaches as immersed in service and engagement. During the 2011-2012 academic year, Defiance College student-athletes contributed more than 2,900 hours of service in their community and around the country. The women’s basketball team’s service projects during the past year have included assisting with the Pancreatic Cancer Research 5k Walk as well as a YMCA basketball clinic. The team also contributed time to fill backpacks for the Backpack Buddy program that provides nutritious foods for local school children to take home on weekends. Many student-athletes at DC have taken active roles in leadership and service initiatives campus-wide. Such experiences give Defiance College students a greater awareness of a diverse world and its needs as well as the leadership skills to create positive change. Women’s basketball team member Emma Starks is a 2011-2012 McMaster Scholar to Cambodia. Emma and fellow team members Jessie Arnold and Erica King are DC Service Leaders. Defiance College is featured for excellence in blending academics with community work by The Princeton Review in its Colleges with a Conscience: 81 Great Schools with Outstanding Community Involvement. Defiance is included in the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for its commitment to community service.

DEFIANCE COLLEGE ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHY

The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program serves as a window of opportunity for all prospective student-athletes to experience an extra-curricular educational and physical activity that fits within the general mission of the college to develop the whole person. The student-athlete will be exposed to a variety of opportunities for personal growth in the areas of intellectual, emotional, spiritual, social and physical dimensions as it relates to each individual and their respective sport. The student-athlete, as a team member, will be involved in a learning community that will strive for excellence both on the field and in the classroom while maintaining a dignity of fair play and continued emphasis on positive sportsmanship.

Jointly, the coaches and student-athletes will build an engaged environment that will accentuate the learning process not only within the competitive arena but also within the college campus

and the community as a whole. An emphasis will be placed on the impact of participation and personal growth, rather than scoreboard success, in a balanced sports program where equitable sports opportunities will be available to both genders. The student-athletes of Defiance College choose to participate in the intercollegiate athletics program for a variety of reasons but none of which includes athletic related financial aid or the promise of financial security through professional athletic stardom. Through participation in the intercollegiate athletics program, a studentathlete continues to compete for the love of sport, the thrill of competition and the fulfillment of countless intrinsic values. The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program strives to be an integral and cohesive part of the collegiate learning and living process, appropriately well suited to co-exist with the Defiance College mission statement…to know, to lead, to serve and to understand.

Coaching Staff CRAIG MCCORD

Craig McCord assumed the role of interim head coach for the women’s basketball program for the 2011-2012 season on Monday, September 16. McCord, who is also currently in his eighth season as an assistant coach for the Jackets on the gridiron, will serve as the 11th head coach in the 39year history of DC’s women’s basketball program. Despite an extensive background coaching football at the high school and collegiate ranks, the Ohio High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Famer boasts plenty of success as a coach on the hardwood as well.

McCord led the women’s basketball program at Ayersville High for 15 seasons, compiling a record of 186-143 with the Lady Pilots during that span. McCord’s tenure with the Ayersville women’s basketball program was highlighted by a trip to the Ohio State Final Four in 1992 and a selection as the women’s basketball Coach of the Year by the Crescent-News. Along with his accolades on the court, McCord also guided the Pilot football program for 30 years. After starting the program in 1974, McCord turned the squad into 12-time conference champions and led Ayersville to a berth in the championship game of the 1986 Ohio State Playoffs and recently had the field dedicated in his honor. Prior to beginning his coaching career at Ayersville, McCord graduated from Ashland University and earned a master’s degree from Bowling Green State University. McCord boasts nearly four decades of coaching experiences at the high school and collegiate ranks. Craig and his wife, Patti, have three grown children and are the grandparents of nine.

NIKKI OAKLAND The 2011-2012 campaign will be Nikki Oakland’s third season with the Lady Jacket basketball program. After arriving in early December 2009, Oakland saw the Lady Jackets post a 14-6 record to finish out the season, and advance to the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Semifinals for the first time since 2004. In 2010-2011, Oakland helped coach two All-HCAC selections and the HCAC Freshman of the Year. Oakland graduated from the University of Dayton, where she was a standout on the women’s basketball team and graduated with a degree in sport management. The former Flyer was a team captain and led the squad in scoring and rebounding from 2007 to 2009, as she became one of the most productive players in Dayton basketball history, ranking second all-time in blocks, eighth all-time in rebounds and 16th all-time in scoring. After graduating from UD, Oakland played basketball professionally in Leon, Spain, for CB Bembibre where she was the team’s third leading scorer and second leading rebounder.

Coaching Staff DAVE ETCHISON The 2011-2012 season is the 20th for Dave Etchison as an assistant coach on the Lady Jacket basketball staff, where he assists in all facets of the program while specializing in student-athlete recruitment. Etchison has been responsible for bringing two All-American performers to Defiance during his tenure with the Lady Jackets. Prior to his time at Defiance, Etchison spent several seasons as a basketball coach for Tinora High School. He also has seven years of experience as a basketball official. The Defiance, Ohio native graduated from Morehead State University in 1971 with a degree in agriculture, and is currently employed as a highway technician for the Ohio Department of Transportation. An avid farmer, Etchison resides in Defiance with his wife, Bonnie. The couple has three children; Jason, Brian, and Kelli Ann, and two grandsons.

STEVE OBERLIN

Steve Oberlin will serve as an assistant coach for the Lady Jackets for a third season after joining the staff prior to the 2009-2010 season. He has also been the head coach for the Defiance College men’s and women’s tennis programs for the past five seasons. Oberlin has coached basketball for nine years at Living Word Christian School, bringing the school two conference titles and one regional finalist appearance in the Associated Christian School International State Tournament, while posting a win-loss record of 107-52. Oberlin has also spent five years coaching men’s and women’s Amateur Athletic Union teams. The Stryker High product graduated from Northwest State with a degree in business management.

STEVE VANDEMARK

Steve VanDemark returns for his second season with the Lady Jacket coaching after joining before the 2010-11 season. VanDemark graduated with an English degree from Defiance College in 1976, and has served at the school as a college trustee and trustee fellow for more than 20 years. During that time, his assignments have included chairing the school’s Marketing and Enrollment Management and Student Affairs Committees. VanDemark is a 40-year employee of the Defiance Publishing Company, and has been the general manager there since 1985. Last summer, VanDemark retired from Rurban Financial Corporation after chairing that board of directors for 15 years. VanDemark and his wife Patty reside in Defiance and have two grown children.

JENNA DESKINS Jenna Deskins joins the staff of the Defiance College women’s basketball team as an assistant coach for the 2011-2012 season, after concluding her playing career with DC last year. She graduated from Defiance College in the spring of 2011 with a degree in business administration. Deskins was a four-year member of the women’s basketball team. She was part of the 2009-2010 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference semifinals team, as well as the 20102011 quarterfinals team. While at Defiance, she served as a McMaster’s Scholar and took part in CASE for Clermont Kids, interned with the 2010 World Choir Games and the Alpha Xi Delta sorority. Currently, Deskins works as a graduate assistant for the Defiance College Advancement Office and is pursuing a master’s in business administration.

SEASON PREVIEW Under the direction of interim head coach Craig McCord, the 2011-2012 version of the Defiance College women’s basketball team enters the new season with hopes of rising up the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference standings, and making a run at the coveted conference title. The Yellow Jackets bring back a talented group of veterans that will provide the core of the team. Notable returners include senior Brooke Zachrich, junior Kim Comden and sophomore Erica King. All three players were tabbed as HCAC Players to Watch for the 2011-2012 season. Zachrich returns for her final season at Defiance after earning Academic All-HCAC accolades in 2010-2011. The 5-7 senior started 25 games for the Lady Jackets and scored 5.8 points per game. She completed 44 field goals at a .404 clip from the floor and grabbed 89 rebounds, including 42 on the offensive glass. Zachrich also led the team with 56 free throws on 73 attempts. Comden enters her third season, after posting career-best numbers as a sophomore. A 6-0 center, Comden was named Academic All-HCAC and Hampton Inn & Suites/Damon’s Grill Tip-Off All-Tournament Team. She started all 26 games in 2010-2011 and averaged 17.6 minutes, 7.3 points and a team-best 5.3 rebounds per night. King, the reigning HCAC Freshman of the Year, returns after leading the Yellow Jackets in scoring a season ago. A DIII News All-Freshmen Team selection, King posted 10.8 points per night during her rookie season. She averaged 3.9 boards per contest and shot at a .407 mark from the floor. King connected on 48 three-pointers and dished out 41 assists last season. Also looking to make an impact this season are junior Rachel Ciminillo, junior Emma Starks and sophomore Hannah Harshman. Ciminillo returns after playing in 26 games during her sophomore campaign. The junior guard averaged 2.1 points per game, while shooting at a .380 mark. She also swiped 17 steals on defense. Starks played in 22 games in 2010-2011 and averaged 1.1 points per game. In 6.9 minutes of action per game, she pulled down an average of 2.0 boards. Harshman showed a lot of promise as a freshman, and will look to improve on her first season. In her first year, Harshman played in all 26 games, and averaged 5.8 points and 4.9 rebounds per night. Sophomores Ashley Birchmeier and Maggie Neanen return with the opportunity for an increased role. Birchmeier averaged 2.1 points in 17 games while Neanen scored 1.8 points per game in 16 contests. The addition of freshmen Jessie Arnold, Megan Fields and Megan Zachrich should also serve as a boost to Defiance.
