2014-15 DEFIANCE COLLEGE MEN’S BASKETBALL MEDIA GUIDE

WELCOME FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Fellow DC Fan: It is a real pleasure to welcome you to our campus and to today’s game. We at Defiance College are extremely proud of our wonderful athletic program and of the many other activities taking place at DC. The students whom you are watching today are an important part of our larger DC family, and they are among the approximately 1000 DC students who benefit from the dedication and assistance provided by our wonderful faculty, alumni, staff, administrators, and friends. Students at DC receive a wide range of distinctive experiences as we strive to offer our students the best of all worlds. At DC, students get the individualized benefits of a student-centered small college, but they also get a world of opportunities beyond. What does this mean? It means that our students start working with us before they even start their classes to put together distinctive Personal Success Plans, so that we can work with them to tailor their DC education and experiences to their own individual interests and goals. Throughout their four years at Defianc, our students benefit from a broad range of activities and experiences that are structured both to help them achieve their individual dreams and also to enable them to stand out in the job market and when applying to graduate schools. As part of that approach, we work with our students to help them develop their own Defiance College Resume. DC students also participate in a broad array of curricular and extra-curricular activities that give students distinctive hands-on experiences in their relevant fields. Just to name a few examples, we are proud of the work that our Criminal Justice students do in investigating cold cases for Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office in Detroit; our Education students get hands-on experience working in classrooms as early as their freshman year; Science students run and manage a 200+ acre wildlife preserve; through our Business Advantage Program, business, marketing, finance, sales, accounting and other students get hands-on experiences creating and running actual businesses. I could go on and on in terms of the different opportunities our Communications, Sport Management, Pre-Med, Social Work, Graphic Design, and students in many other areas. We are all partucularly proud of the great work that our students have done running Project 701, a unique student-run, separately-legally-incorporated non-profit, in which DC students create, develop, run and manage service projects. From working with the two hospitals in town to run a free primarycare clinic to micro-finance lending; from providing computer repair services to packing backpacks full of food for needy elementary school students to take home on weekends, our DC students are gaining the tools to become entrepreneurial life-long learners, while also helping to address important local, regional, national, and international issues. In fact, Defiance College was recently named one of the top 20 schools in the country in terms of community service and engagement. DC students also get unique opportunities to travel both domestically and internationally. Under our DC Global Program, we actually guarantee an international opportunity in the junior and senior year to students in good standing who successfully complete our full four-year program. Over the past two years, DC students have traveled to Cambodia, Belize, Tanzania, Ghana, Spain, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, London, Paris, Vienna, Prague, Hungary, Slovakia, and more. Similarly, on a domestic level, DC students have traveled to New York City, Washington, D.C., Portland (OR), Pittsburgh, Detroit, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Kansas City, Des Moines, Denver, Selma, Memphis, Chicago, Nashville, Florida, South Carolina, New Mexico and elsewhere. We are very proud of the opportunities we give our students to open their eyes, raise their sights, open their minds, and , in many cases, open thier hearts as well. I hope you notice some of the recent improvements to our athletic facilities. Our George M. Smart Athletic Center (“the George”) began operation in February 2012, and we are thrilled with the opportunities our students have to use this 84,000 square foot facility, with its 200-meter indoor track, tennis courts, basketball courts, volleyball courts, batting cages, fitness center, weight room, and much more. The new turf on our football/lacrosse field was installed in December 2012, and we also recently renovated our outdoor E. Stevens Dix Tennis Courts. The new bleachers and improved flooring in our Weaner Center has also enhanced the experience for our fans, and more improvements are underway across campus this year as well. I want to thank our entire team, including players, coaches, trainers, and staff for the great work they do every day and the numerous ways in which they go above and beyond on a regular basis. I also want to thank our alumni, the parents of our athletes and the various organizations, all of whom donate generously to our athletic programs. Members of the Defiance College Board of Trustees, the Purple and Gold Club, and the Alumni Varsity ‘D’ all contribute immeasurably as well, both as individuals and through their organizations. And the incomparable fculty at DC, together with extremely dedicated administrators and staff, all combine to make DC the special place that it is. We are pleased to have you as our guest at DC today, and I hope that you will return to campus frequently for both sporting events and the numerous cultural and academic events we are proud to host. Go Jackets! Sincerely, Mark C. Gordon, President

DEFIANCE ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHY The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program serves as a window of opportunity for all prospective studentathletes to experience an extra-curricular educational and physical activity that fits within the general mission of the college to develop the whole person. The student-athlete will be exposed to a variety of opportunities for personal growth in the areas of intellectual, emotional, spiritual, social and physical dimensions as it relates to each individual and their respective sport. The student-athlete, as a team member, will be involved in a learning community that will strive for excellence both on the field and in the classroom while maintaining a dignity of fair play and continued emphasis on positive sportsmanship. Jointly, the coaches and student-athletes will build an engaged environment that will accentuate the learning process not only within the competitive arena but also within the college campus and the community as a whole. An emphasis will be placed on the impact of participation and personal growth, rather than scoreboard success, in a balanced sports program where equitable sports opportunities will be available to both genders. The student-athletes of Defiance College choose to participate in the intercollegiate athletics program for a variety of reasons but none of which includes athletic related financial aid or the promise of financial security through professional athletic stardom. Through participation in the intercollegiate athletics program, a student-athlete continues to compete for the love of sport, the thrill of competition and the fulfillment of countless intrinsic values. The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program strives to be an integral and cohesive part of the collegiate learning and living process, appropriately well suited to co-exist with the Defiance College mission statement…to know, to lead, to serve and to understand.

DEFIANCE COLLEGE ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHY The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program serves as a window of opportunity for all prospective student-athletes to experience an extra-curricular educational and physical activity that fits within the general mission of the college to develop the whole person. The student-athletes of Defiance College choose to participate in the intercollegiate athletics program for a variety of reasons but none of which includes athletic related financial aid, or the promise of financial security through professional athletic stardom.

2014-15 DEFIANCE 2014 DEFIANCE COLLEGE MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL FOOTBALLMEDIA MEDIAGUIDE GUIDE

SEASON OUTLOOK

12-Time Conference Champions • Four Undefeated Seasons • 54 All-Americans

The Defiance College men’s basketball program will begin a new era in 2014-15 as Tom Heil takes over as head coach and will be in his first season at the helm. Last season, the Yellow Jackets finished 15-3 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play and claimed a share of the HCAC RegularSeason Title. DC brings back substantial depth from last season having lost just one player from last year. The Yellow Jackets bring back five players that played in all 26 games on the 20-6 team from a year ago. With a combination of experience from upperclassmen and a talented incoming freshman class, DC looks primed to make another run at the HCAC title. Guards DC brings back one of the best, most talented backcourts in the HCAC. Seniors Travis Schomaeker Ottawa/Ottawa-Glandorf) and Mason Roth (McComb) have made in impact since they stepped on the court as freshmen. Between the two of them, they’ve played in 158 games and started 126. Joining Schomaeker and Roth, will be seniors Shaquille Smith (Flint, Mich./Flint Northern), Drew Frizell (Smithville), junior Clay Walker (Wadsworth/ Berberton) and sophomore Devin Mangas (Leipsic). Roth comes back as the second highest returning scorer, averaging nine points a game last season. He also returns as the most deadly three-point shooter form last season, hitting on 39 percent of his attempts. In addition, he was one ot the top free-throw shooters on the team converting 82.6 percent of his attempts at the line in 201314. Complimenting his overall shooting ability, Roth led the team in assits with 2.9 helpers per game. Defensively, Roth averaged 1.1 steals per contest. Following the season, Roth earned honorable mention AllHCAC honors. Schomaeker returns following a

18

season that saw him finish fourth on the team in scoring at 8.6 ppg. Schomaeker’s primary threat was from behind the three-point line where he led the Yellow Jackets in triples made (48) while shooting 33.8 percent from “downtown.” He was also one of the best defenders last sesaon in the HCAC finishing second in steals per game with 1.4. In addition, Schomaeker shot 83.6 percent from the free-throw line and was second on the team in assists at 2.7 per game. Smith joined the program last season, but returns with a lot of experience as he played two years at the junior college level prior to coming to DC. Last season, Smith averaged 2.3 ppg. while shooting an impressive 83.3 percent from the field. Frizell played in 16 games last year coming off the bench. He made seven field goals with all seven coming from behind the arc. Over the course of his career, Frizell has shot 34.5 percent from three-point range, including shooting 37 percent his sophomore year. Walker and Mangas will provide depth at the guard position with Walker playing in three games and Mangas coming off the bench in 10 games as a freshman. Mangas shot six-of-20 from the field for the year, including fiveof-14 in three’s. He also added a pair of free-throws to finish the year with 19 points.

one of the best forwards in the conference from a season ago in senior Bernard Edwards (Detroit, Mich./Warren Cousino). Bernard Edwards had a career season last year as a junior capped by a first-team All-HCAC selection. He led the team in scoring in 2013-14 at 15.7 ppg. and was sixth in the conference. Bernard Edwards shot 42.6 percent from the field and 31.3 percent from behind the arc. In addition, he had a knack for getting to the free-throw line shooting a team-best 133 attempts and made 101 for 75.9 percent. On the glass, Bernard Edwards averaged 4.2 boards per game which put him third on the team. Defensively, Bernard Edwards was second on the team in blocks with 23 and averaged 0.9 blocks per game, placing him sixth in the HCAC. Fellow senior Kent Tietje (Hamler/Patrick Henry) will also be one of the top returning forwards for DC. Last year, Tietje played in all 26 games as a backup and averaged nearly 3.0 ppg. He shot an impressive 71.4 percent from the floor (25-of-35) and grabbed 89 rebounds for a 3.4 rpg. average.

Forwards The Yellow Jackets bring back

Also back, is the sophomore duo of Sam Toporski (Crown Point, Ind./Andrean) and Xavian Edwards (Mount Clemens, Mich./Chippewa Valley). Both players saw playing time in backup roles playing in a combined 16

games. Toporski and Xavian Edwards both averaged just over a rebound per game while Toporski scored four points and Xavian Edwards had three points. Centers DC brings back a big presence in the lane with junior Wade Wooley (Wauseon). Wooley had a breakout season for the Yellow Jackets last winter. He led the team and the HCAC in rebounding pulling down 7.1 rpg. , including averaging 2.2 offensive boards per game. He also ranked third in blocked shots per game with 1.0 per contest. Offensively, Wooley averaged 5.0 ppg., with an impressive 64.6 shooting percentage (62-of-96). Also expect sophomores Javone Hilliard (Indianapolis, Ind./Arsenal Tech) and Josh Ream (Van Wert/Crestview) to provide depth with both players gaining a year of experience as freshmen. Ream averaged nearly a rebound per game in limited playing time and Hillard made his only field goal attempted for two points in two games played.
