THIS IS DEFIANCE Defiance College, founded in 1850, is a private liberal arts college affiliated with the United Church of Christ, serving approximately 1,100 students. Building on a strong foundation of more than a century of educating citizens for lives of leadership and service, Defiance College provides opportunities for its students to make a meaningful impact on society in the twenty-first century with an educational experience of engagement. Defiance’s spirit of service through leadership sets us apart. The Princeton Review features Defiance College in Colleges with a Conscience: 81 Great Schools with Outstanding Community Involvement. Defiance College has been named for five-consecutive years to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for its commitment to community service, and for the past two years DC has been named a Military Friendly School for providing significant benefits and services to veterans. Defiance College is also one of 119 U.S. colleges and universities selected by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching to receive its 2008 Community Engagement Classification. The McMaster School for Advancing Humanity was created to provide opportunities for DC undergraduate students and faculty to more closely examine global issues and how they affect the human condition. Faculty and students conducted projects during the 2009-10 year in Belize, Cambodia and New Orleans. The School serves as the umbrella for the Service Leadership Program developing leadership communication, conflict resolution and cultural awareness; the Carolyn M. Small Honors Program providing opportunities for students to participate in an honors curriculum; Project 701, a student-run nonprofit organization; and study abroad programs. Defiance College is also home of the Hench Autism Studies Program, an innovative, multi-faceted program designed to specifically address the late adolescent years and the transition of individuals with autism to adulthood. Student life is an important part of a Defiance College education. Activities include student government, musical and theater groups, religious organizations, the student newspaper, intercultural organizations, honor societies, special interest groups, intramural athletics, and four Greek chapters including a service fraternity. As a national leader in the field of service learning and engagement, DC teaches students to take the knowledge they have gained and use it to change lives for the better – in their communities, in distant villages, and in their careers.

JACKETS IN THE COMMUNITY Defiance College has challenged students to defy the ordinary, to explore academic boundaries, to take on roles of civic responsibility and leadership, and to become engaged on campus and in the community. All of this makes for an extraordinary college experience. Nowhere else will you find students committed to their communities like Defiance College, and nowhere else will you find student-athletes and coaches as immersed in service and engagement. During the 2009-10 academic year, Defiance College student-athletes contributed more than 2,400 hours of service in their community and around the country. Members of the men’s and women’s soccer teams contributed nearly 350 hours of service last year. During the past year, the men’s and women’s soccer teams volunteered their time and talents at the Defiance Area YMCA conducting soccer clinics and serving as referees for youth leagues. Many student-athletes at DC have taken active roles in leadership and service initiatives campuswide. Such experiences give Defiance College students a greater awareness of a diverse world and its needs as well as the leadership skills to create positive change. Men’s soccer team members Evan Allen, Alec Pribulsky and Gene Snyder are DC Service Leaders. Greg McNutt is a McMaster Scholar to Belize, and Matthew Johnson is a McMaster Scholar to Cambodia. Defiance College is featured for excellence in blending academics with community work by The Princeton Review in its Colleges with a Conscience: 81 Great Schools with Outstanding Community Involvement. Defiance is included in the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for its commitment to community service.

2010 SEASON PREVIEW In the wake of a fifth-straight season of more losses than wins, the Yellow Jackets turned to Alex Van der Sluijs to restore the winning tradition that is expected of the DC soccer teams. Van der Sluijs is familiar with the current athletes after serving for two seasons as a graduate assistant with the program, and brings a wealth of soccer experience at both the collegiate and professional levels. The former Wilmington College star plans to implement an attacking style of soccer, with an emphasis on creativity, ball movement and defensive discipline, as the Jackets look to capture their first winning season since 2004. With a 35-man squad full of talent and potential, Coach Van der Sluijs enters the season with plenty of optimism and excitement. “I think this will be a challenging season, but also a very successful one,” said Van der Sluijs. “As long as we play as a team, and exhibit selflessness on the field, we will win a lot of games.” With a first-year head coach and a roster full of newcomers, the Jackets will need to depend on a strong core of veterans to help set the tone for the season, and Van der Sluijs believes the upperclassmen will be up to the challenge. “I am really excited about our returning lettermen. They are a great group of guys and show tremendous leadership,” said Van der Sluijs. “We have a very young team, so we will need them to lead by example throughout the season.” However, the newcomers will be expected to come in and deliver immediately for the Jackets. “This freshmen class has a lot of talent, and they will have a great deal of responsibility early on to contribute,” said Van der Sluijs. “There are many newcomers that I can see making an impact this season, so gaining quality experience right away will be critical.” The Jackets are optimistic, and with good reason, that the new era of Defiance College soccer will see DC return to contention in the ever-competitive Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. The depth, leadership and talent are all present, and the new skipper thinks this squad has the intangibles to bring it all together. “I think our main strength will be that we will be having fun. The guys really love the game and have a lot of passion for it,” said Van der Sluijs. “This is a great asset for us as we progress into the season.”
