2014-15 DEFIANCE COLLEGE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL MEDIA GUIDE

WELCOME FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Fellow DC Fan: It is a real pleasure to welcome you to our campus and to today’s game. We at Defiance College are extremely proud of our wonderful athletic program and of the many other activities taking place at DC. The students whom you are watching today are an important part of our larger DC family, and they are among the approximately 1000 DC students who benefit from the dedication and assistance provided by our wonderful faculty, alumni, staff, administrators, and friends. Students at DC receive a wide range of distinctive experiences as we strive to offer our students the best of all worlds. At DC, students get the individualized benefits of a student-centered small college, but they also get a world of opportunities beyond. What does this mean? It means that our students start working with us before they even start their classes to put together distinctive Personal Success Plans, so that we can work with them to tailor their DC education and experiences to their own individual interests and goals. Throughout their four years at Defianc, our students benefit from a broad range of activities and experiences that are structured both to help them achieve their individual dreams and also to enable them to stand out in the job market and when applying to graduate schools. As part of that approach, we work with our students to help them develop their own Defiance College Resume. DC students also participate in a broad array of curricular and extra-curricular activities that give students distinctive hands-on experiences in their relevant fields. Just to name a few examples, we are proud of the work that our Criminal Justice students do in investigating cold cases for Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office in Detroit; our Education students get hands-on experience working in classrooms as early as their freshman year; Science students run and manage a 200+ acre wildlife preserve; through our Business Advantage Program, business, marketing, finance, sales, accounting and other students get hands-on experiences creating and running actual businesses. I could go on and on in terms of the different opportunities our Communications, Sport Management, Pre-Med, Social Work, Graphic Design, and students in many other areas. We are all partucularly proud of the great work that our students have done running Project 701, a unique student-run, separately-legally-incorporated non-profit, in which DC students create, develop, run and manage service projects. From working with the two hospitals in town to run a free primarycare clinic to micro-finance lending; from providing computer repair services to packing backpacks full of food for needy elementary school students to take home on weekends, our DC students are gaining the tools to become entrepreneurial life-long learners, while also helping to address important local, regional, national, and international issues. In fact, Defiance College was recently named one of the top 20 schools in the country in terms of community service and engagement. DC students also get unique opportunities to travel both domestically and internationally. Under our DC Global Program, we actually guarantee an international opportunity in the junior and senior year to students in good standing who successfully complete our full four-year program. Over the past two years, DC students have traveled to Cambodia, Belize, Tanzania, Ghana, Spain, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, London, Paris, Vienna, Prague, Hungary, Slovakia, and more. Similarly, on a domestic level, DC students have traveled to New York City, Washington, D.C., Portland (OR), Pittsburgh, Detroit, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Kansas City, Des Moines, Denver, Selma, Memphis, Chicago, Nashville, Florida, South Carolina, New Mexico and elsewhere. We are very proud of the opportunities we give our students to open their eyes, raise their sights, open their minds, and , in many cases, open thier hearts as well. I hope you notice some of the recent improvements to our athletic facilities. Our George M. Smart Athletic Center (“the George”) began operation in February 2012, and we are thrilled with the opportunities our students have to use this 84,000 square foot facility, with its 200-meter indoor track, tennis courts, basketball courts, volleyball courts, batting cages, fitness center, weight room, and much more. The new turf on our football/lacrosse field was installed in December 2012, and we also recently renovated our outdoor E. Stevens Dix Tennis Courts. The new bleachers and improved flooring in our Weaner Center has also enhanced the experience for our fans, and more improvements are underway across campus this year as well. I want to thank our entire team, including players, coaches, trainers, and staff for the great work they do every day and the numerous ways in which they go above and beyond on a regular basis. I also want to thank our alumni, the parents of our athletes and the various organizations, all of whom donate generously to our athletic programs. Members of the Defiance College Board of Trustees, the Purple and Gold Club, and the Alumni Varsity ‘D’ all contribute immeasurably as well, both as individuals and through their organizations. And the incomparable fculty at DC, together with extremely dedicated administrators and staff, all combine to make DC the special place that it is. We are pleased to have you as our guest at DC today, and I hope that you will return to campus frequently for both sporting events and the numerous cultural and academic events we are proud to host. Go Jackets! Sincerely, Mark C. Gordon, President

DEFIANCE ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHY The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program serves as a window of opportunity for all prospective student-athletes to experience an extra-curricular educational and physical activity that fits within the general mission of the college to develop the whole person. The student-athlete will be exposed to a variety of opportunities for personal growth in the areas of intellectual, emotional, spiritual, social and physical dimensions as it relates to each individual and their respective sport. The student-athlete, as a team member, will be involved in a learning community that will strive for excellence both on the field and in the classroom while maintaining a dignity of fair play and continued emphasis on positive sportsmanship. Jointly, the coaches and student-athletes will build an engaged environment that will accentuate the learning process not only within the competitive arena but also within the college campus and the community as a whole. An emphasis will be placed on the impact of participation and personal growth, rather than scoreboard success, in a balanced sports program where equitable sports opportunities will be available to both genders. The student-athletes of Defiance College choose to participate in the intercollegiate athletics program for a variety of reasons but none of which includes athletic related financial aid or the promise of financial security through professional athletic stardom. Through participation in the intercollegiate athletics program, a student-athlete continues to compete for the love of sport, the thrill of competition and the fulfillment of countless intrinsic values. The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program strives to be an integral and cohesive part of the collegiate learning and living process, appropriately well suited to co-exist with the Defiance College mission statement…to know, to lead, to serve and to understand.

DEFIANCE COLLEGE ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHY The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program serves as a window of opportunity for all prospective student-athletes to experience an extra-curricular educational and physical activity that fits within the general mission of the college to develop the whole person. The student-athletes of Defiance College choose to participate in the intercollegiate athletics program for a variety of reasons but none of which includes athletic related financial aid, or the promise of financial security through professional athletic stardom.

SEASON OUTLOOK

12-Time Conference Champions • Four Undefeated Seasons • 54 All-Americans

The 2014-15 Defiance College women’s basketball team is coming off of a season that saw them narrowly miss postsesaon play with an 8-10 record in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play, but fell short via a tiebreaker with another team that finished the same record. Though DC is young, the Yellow Jackets are bringing back a lot of experience. DC will bring back four-offive starters from a year ago. Added to a strong freshman class, the Yellow Jackets have the making of putting together a strong season with the potential of post season play. Guards DC brings back both of its starters in the backcourt with the sophomore duo of Erica Smay (Defiance/Tinora) and Ashley Williams (Leipsic/ Pandora-Gilboa). As a freshman, Smay averaged 3.8 points per game playing in all 25 games and started 23. Amongst the returning players, Smay posted the highest free-throw shooting percentage at 76.7 (23-of30). She is also the team’s top returner in assists with 49 from a year ago. Smay also averaged 2.6 rebounds per game and was one of eight players with 10 or more steals (16). Following the season, she was selected to the HCAC All-Sportsmanship Team. Williams comes back after starting 16 of 18 games during her freshman campaign. She averaged 3.6 points a game while shooting 33.8 percent overall from the floor (24of-71). Williams returns as one of the top threats from beyond the arc for the Yellow Jackets after a season that saw her shoot 31.0 percent (13-

18

of-42) from downtown. In addition, Williams averaged 2.1 assists, which is the second best average amongst returning players.

senior will also show a strong presence on the defensive side of the court as led the team in steals a season ago with 42 in addition to having six blocks.

Forwards The Yellow Jackets bring back three forwards from last year’s squad. Lone senior Megan Zachrich (Napoleon) will play on the wing as a guard/ forward along with a pair of sophomores in Katie Tilman (Miami, Fla./LaSalle) and Keri Conine (Ottawa/PandoraGilboa).

Conine adds depth at the forward position and comes back as a strong shooting option for the Yellow Jackets. She did not miss a shot last year (three-of-three) and averaged 1.2 points per game. She also grabbed four rebounds for a 0.8 rpg. average.

Zachrich returns with the most experience on the DC roster with 48 starts in her career. She was one of two Yellow Jackets named to the Preseason HCAC Players to Watch List going into the 2014-15 season. Zachrich was also honorable mention All-HCAC last season brings back the second highest scoring average with 6.9 ppg. Zachrich was also one of the shooters last year for DC, shooting better than 41 percent from the field (55-of132). She averaged 2.2 assists per game, which is the highest retuning average for the Yellow Jackets in that category. In addition, Zachrich was one of the top rebounders last sesaon grabbing 68 boards for a 3.4 rpg. average. The

ZACHRICH

points very efficiently, shooting nearly 50 percent from the field and getting to the line better than seven times a game. Defensively, she tallied a team-best 37 blocks, averaging 1.5 blocks a game.

She scored 402 points last season, making it the 14th time in DC history where a player went over 400 points in one season. Tietje scored her

Schedule The 2014-15 season begins on Saturday, Nov. 15 at home against Alma (Mich.) College at the Karl H. Weaner Center. It will be part of a back-to-back home start for the Yellow Jackets with Saturday’s matchup against Alma followed by another home game against Albion (Mich.) College on Tuesday, Nov. 18. Both games will be part of a competitive non-conference schedule which includes a showdown with Hope (Mich.) College as part of the Hope College Tournament on Nov. 21-22. Hope enters the season as the No. 6 nationally-ranked team in NCAA Division III. The Flying Dutch are a twotime national champion and have shared or won outright the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title in 12 of the past 14 seasons. The Jackets will open HCAC play on Wednesday, Dec. 3 against Manchester (Ind.) University in North Manchester, Ind.

SMAY

Tilman will also add depth for DC following a year of college experience as a member of the junior varsity squad. Centers Kelsey Tietje comes back as the lone center after a monster season her freshman year. Tietje was a walking doubledouble as she averaged 16.1 ppg. and 10.2 rpg. Both led the Yellow Jackets last season and were also good enough for third and first in the HCAC. Following the season, Tietje was named first-team All-HCAC and selected to the HCAC All-Freshman Team.

12-Time Conference Champions • Four Undefeated Seasons • 54 All-Americans

JESSICA

(Cox) Morris

HEAD COACH • THIRD SEASON • DUBUQUE, 2005 419-783-2391• JCOX@DEFIANCE.EDU Jessica (Cox) Morris enters her third season as the head coach of the Yellow Jackets women’s basketball program. In the first season, Coach Cox led DC to a 14-12 overall and 11-7 HCAC records, both of which were the best records since the 2009-10 campaign. Over the course of the 2012-13 season, Cox-Morris guided the team to multiple achievements including an 8-3 home record, a six-game winning streak and a fourth-straight appearance in the HCAC tournament. Individually, Coach Cox helped grow former Jacket Kim Comden and senior Erica King into first-team All-HCAC members last year, as well as keeping her team strong in the classroom by notching eight HCAC Academic All-Conference honorees. In 2013-14, DC finished with an 11-14 overall record and 8-10 in the HCAC. Three players earned All-Conference honors at the end of the season, including one first-team award winner in then freshman Kelsey Tietje. Before joining the Purple and Gold, Cox-Morris accumulated seven years of coaching experience. The Galena, Illinois native most recently served as the assistant coach at NCAA Division III Whitman College. The Missionaries went 31-21 from 2010-2012 with Coach Cox on the staff, including a 21-11 mark within the Northwest Conference. She helped Whitman improve its record in each of her two years with the squad, while overseeing the strength and conditioning and recruiting efforts of the program. Prior to moving to Walla Walla, Washington to join the WC coaching staff, Cox-Morris went 32-15 as the head coach at Waterford Mott High in Michigan. The Illinois native guided the Corsairs to a six-win improvement in her second year, saw the team win league and district championships and was a nominee for Oakland County Coach of the Year by the Basketball Coaches Association for Michigan. Coach Cox got her start on the bench as an assistant coach at Augustana College, while working as the coach of the junior varsity program at the D-III institution. Before jumping into the coaching ranks, Cox-Morris started every game of her record-setting, four-year career on the planks with the University of Dubuque. She was a captain of the team in each of her final two seasons and earned all-conference honors as a senior. Coach Cox ended her standout Division III career with Dubuque as the program’s all-time leader with 247 made three-point shots and a 34.8-percent clip from beyond the arc. The sharpshooter also left with the school’s top free-throw percentage at a crisp 80.0 mark, ranked third with 298 assists and fourth with 1,328 points. Cox-Morris graduated from Dubuque in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in health, wellness and recreation and earned a minor in coaching.
