THIS IS DEFIANCE Defiance College, founded in 1850, is a private liberal arts college affiliated with the United Church of Christ, serving approximately 1,100 students. Building on a strong foundation of more than a century of educating citizens for lives of leadership and service, Defiance College provides opportunities for its students to make a meaningful impact on society in the twenty-first century with an educational experience of engagement. Defiance’s spirit of service through leadership sets us apart. The Princeton Review features Defiance College in Colleges with a Conscience: 81 Great Schools with Outstanding Community Involvement. Defiance College has been named for fiveconsecutive years to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for its commitment to community service, and for the past two years DC has been named a Military Friendly School for providing significant benefits and services to veterans. Defiance College is also one of 119 U.S. colleges and universities selected by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching to receive its 2008 Community Engagement Classification. The McMaster School for Advancing Humanity was created to provide opportunities for DC undergraduate students and faculty to more closely examine global issues and how they affect the human condition. Faculty and students conducted projects during the 2009-10 year in Belize, Cambodia and New Orleans. The School serves as the umbrella for the Service Leadership Program developing leadership communication, conflict resolution and cultural awareness; the Carolyn M. Small Honors Program providing opportunities for students to participate in an honors curriculum; Project 701, a student-run nonprofit organization; and study abroad programs. Defiance College is also home of the Hench Autism Studies Program, an innovative, multi-faceted program designed to specifically address the late adolescent years and the transition of individuals with autism to adulthood. Student life is an important part of a Defiance College education. Activities include student government, musical and theater groups, religious organizations, the student newspaper, intercultural organizations, honor societies, special interest groups, intramural athletics, and four Greek chapters including a service fraternity. As a national leader in the field of service learning and engagement, DC teaches students to take the knowledge they have gained and use it to change lives for the better – in their communities, in distant villages, and in their careers.

JACKETS IN THE COMMUNITY Defiance College has challenged students to defy the ordinary, to explore academic boundaries, to take on roles of civic responsibility and leadership, and to become engaged on campus and in the community. All of this makes for an extraordinary college experience. Nowhere else will you find students committed to their communities like Defiance College, and nowhere else will you find student-athletes and coaches as immersed in service and engagement. During the 2009-10 academic year, Defiance College student-athletes contributed more than 2,400 hours of service in their community and around the country. Members of the men’s and women’s soccer teams contributed nearly 350 hours of service last year. During the past year, the men’s and women’s soccer teams volunteered their time and talents at the Defiance Area YMCA conducting soccer clinics and serving as referees for youth leagues. Many student-athletes at DC have taken active roles in leadership and service initiatives campuswide. Such experiences give Defiance College students a greater awareness of a diverse world and its needs as well as the leadership skills to create positive change. Defiance College is featured for excellence in blending academics with community work by The Princeton Review in its Colleges with a Conscience: 81 Great Schools with Outstanding Community Involvement. Defiance is included in the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for its commitment to community service.

2010 PREVIEW The Lady Jackets were in need of a fresh start after battling through five-consecutive losing seasons from 2005-09, and received just that with the hiring of first-year head coach, Alex Van der Sluijs. Frustration has been replaced with optimism as the new skipper implements his aggressive style of play into a team loaded with a talented core of upperclassmen, and an influx of skillful freshmen that are expected to make an immediate contribution to the team. Goalkeepers: Senior goalkeeper, Kelly Coble, established herself as a reliable stopper for the Yellow Jackets last year in her first season of extended minutes protecting the net. Coble finished her junior campaign ranked second in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference in both saves and saves per game, while posting two shutouts and playing significant minutes in a third. Freshman keeper, Aileen Clouse, will serve as the primary backup at the position in her first year out of Beaver Creek High School. Defenders: 2009 All-HCAC performer, Katie Heitkamp, headlines a very young, but talented group of defenders. Heitkamp became known for her defensive prowess last season, and will be depended upon again this year to keep the team disciplined in the back. Fellow sophomore, Hanna Firchau, joins Heitkamp in the backfield after an impressive freshman campaign in which she earned 15 starts while notching one goal and one assist. Returning letterwinners, Amanda Notley and Anna Kusz, will help out in the defensive backfield as well, while freshmen Aliisa Carter and Kim Bingley will look to make their contributions. Midfielders: Senior midfielder, Melissa Alston is the most experienced player on the squad, with 48 games under her belt at Defiance. After posting three goals and two assists last season, Alston enters her senior campaign as an HCAC Player to Watch, and will team up with fellow upperclassmen, Dani Chadwick and Alexandra Johnson in the midfield. Chadwick was one of the top distributors in the conference last season, notching a team-high four assists. Johnson finished third on the team with eight points on three goals and two assists in 2009, and enters the 2010 season as a HCAC Player to Watch. Jordanne Buehrer and Trisha Denniston were impact players for DC last season, and will compete with several talented newcomers at the position including freshmen, Macy Ferrall, Karly Smith and Bibana Parra. Forwards: Speedy senior, Cherilyn Borkholder, was an offensive force for Defiance last season, racking up a team-high seven goals to go along with one assist and 15 total points. Borkholder will fit perfectly into coach Van der Sluijs’ up-tempo offensive attack, and will be expected to lead a young group of forwards, including freshmen Hailey Trubey and Janelle Doenges.
